Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has rejected the results of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, alleging widespread electoral irregularities and demanding fresh polling in the constituency contested by senior PPP leader Chaudhry Yasin.

Addressing a workers’ convention in Muzaffarabad on Wednesday, Bilawal said his party would not accept what it  described as a manipulated election outcome. He claimed there was substantial evidence of irregularities in several polling stations and called on the election authorities to order an immediate re-poll in the disputed constituency.

Bilawal alleged that around 30 polling stations in Chaudhry Yasin’s constituency were unlawfully occupied during the voting process. According to him, videos circulating on social media and obtained by the party show individuals allegedly stamping ballot papers illegally and interfering with the electoral process.

He further claimed that these polling stations recorded an unusually high voter turnout of approximately 90 percent, raising questions about the credibility of the results. The PPP chairman argued that the reported turnout, combined with the alleged video evidence, justified a fresh vote to ensure transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.

Criticizing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Bilawal accused the party of benefiting from electoral manipulation. He also made sharp political remarks against the ruling party, alleging that it had a long history of relying on rigged elections. His comments have further intensified the political dispute surrounding the AJK election results.

The PPP leadership has urged the relevant election authorities to investigate the alleged irregularities and review the evidence presented by the party. Bilawal maintained that a transparent inquiry and re-polling in the affected constituency are essential to protect the integrity of the democratic process.

The PML-N has not issued a detailed response to Bilawal’s latest allegations at the time of writing. Election authorities have also not announced any decision regarding the demand for re-polling.

The dispute has added to the political tension following the Azad Kashmir elections, with rival parties exchanging accusations over the fairness of the electoral process. The coming days are expected to be crucial as the Election Commission reviews complaints submitted by political parties and determines whether any further action is warranted.

If approved, re-polling in the disputed constituency could have implications for the final political landscape in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

Rescue teams continue to search for the remaining missing climbers despite difficult terrain and severe weather conditions. Rana Sanaullah stated that the Pakistan Army and other relevant agencies are carrying out extensive rescue operations using helicopters, drones, and all available resources. He noted that challenging weather and the remote mountainous landscape have made rescue efforts extremely difficult, but authorities remain fully committed to locating the missing climbers. The adviser explained that search teams are utilizing GPS tracking, aerial surveillance, and ground search missions to maximize the chances of finding those still unaccounted for. He emphasized that rescue operations will continue without interruption until every possible effort has been exhausted. Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Rana Sanaullah said Nepalese climbers, along with other international mountaineers, are highly respected in Pakistan for their contributions to global mountaineering. He added that Pakistan values its long-standing friendship with Nepal and stands with the families affected by the tragedy during this difficult time. He further reaffirmed that the government will continue to deploy all available resources until the search mission is completed. Pakistan, he said, remains committed to assisting the international climbing community and ensuring that every effort is made to locate the missing members of the expedition. The Broad Peak avalanche has once again highlighted the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering in the Karakoram, where unpredictable weather, avalanches, and challenging terrain continue to pose significant risks even to experienced climbers. Authorities have pledged to maintain rescue operations while closely monitoring weather conditions to ensure the safety of rescue personnel.

    The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has kept its policy rate unchanged at 11.5 per cent, maintaining the existing monetary policy stance amid concerns over economic growth. The decision was announced on Monday by SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed following a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The central bank’s decision was largely expected by financial market analysts. Most experts had predicted that the SBP would maintain the current rate to support macroeconomic stability while monitoring economic conditions. Market surveys conducted by brokerage firms showed that more than 90 per cent of respondents expected the policy rate to remain unchanged. Only a small number of analysts had anticipated a possible increase. The decision comes as Pakistan continues to balance economic stability with the need to encourage business activity and investment. Higher interest rates can help control inflation and support financial stability, but they can also increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. The SBP had reduced its policy rate by 50 basis points to 10.5pc in December 2025. It later raised the rate by 100 basis points to 11.5pc in April 2026. Since then, the central bank has maintained the rate at 11.5pc. Business groups have continued to call for a significant reduction in borrowing costs. They argue that lower interest rates could help businesses expand operations, increase investment and support economic activity. However, the central bank has opted for a cautious approach. Policymakers appear focused on maintaining overall economic stability while assessing inflation, growth and other financial indicators.

Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things will reportedly continue as Jean Grey following her appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Inde Navarrette will portray Rogue, while the ensemble cast also features Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver is also joining the project, taking on the role of the villain Nathaniel Milbury.     UN warns Afghanistan’s child malnutrition crisis deepens

    Afghanistan is facing a rapidly worsening malnutrition emergency as severe funding cuts leave millions without life-saving assistance, the United Nations has warned. Speaking from Kabul, the World Food Programme’s (WFP) Afghanistan Director John Aylieff said the country’s nutrition crisis is escalating at an alarming pace, with growing numbers of severely malnourished children reaching health facilities too late to receive effective treatment. He said child wasting, the deadliest form of malnutrition, has now reached critical levels in nearly one-third of Afghanistan’s provinces. According to the WFP, ongoing conflict, disruptions to trade, the return of thousands of Afghan migrants from neighbouring countries, and shrinking international aid have combined to create an unprecedented humanitarian emergency. The UN official said last year recorded the sharpest annual increase in malnutrition cases, while the situation has deteriorated even further in 2026. Children under the age of two account for around 80 percent of the most severe cases, highlighting the devastating impact on the country’s youngest and most vulnerable population. Aylieff said the WFP has only enough resources to provide treatment to one out of every seven acutely malnourished women and children this year. The remaining six are forced to leave without assistance because of a severe shortage of funds. He warned that the cries of starving children in Afghan health centres reflect a preventable tragedy that could claim countless more lives if emergency funding is not secured. The humanitarian agency also expressed concern that widespread hunger could fuel migration, instability and extremism, stressing that a stable Afghanistan remains important for regional security. Millions of Afghans have also returned from neighbouring countries, including Pakistan and Iran, over the past three years, placing additional pressure on already overstretched resources. Although this year’s harvest has improved, the gains have been overshadowed by the country’s worsening economic and humanitarian challenges. The WFP estimates that nearly 14 million Afghans are currently experiencing acute hunger. However, funding shortages have limited food assistance to only a small fraction of those in need, while preventive food distribution programmes in high-risk areas have been suspended.

    Petrol down Rs3.39, diesel Rs4.07

    The federal government has announced another reduction in petroleum prices, lowering the rates of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) effective August 5 under the recently introduced daily fuel pricing mechanism. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs3.39 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs328.56 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel has also been cut by Rs4.07 per litre, with the revised rate set at Rs385.86 per litre. The latest reduction follows a similar decrease announced a day earlier, reflecting continued adjustments under the government’s daily fuel price review system. The new pricing mechanism, introduced on July 17, determines fuel prices using a seven-day average of international oil market rates. The policy aims to align domestic petroleum prices more closely with global market trends and allow quicker adjustments in response to fluctuations in crude oil prices. Pakistan remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil and refined petroleum products, making local fuel prices highly sensitive to movements in international energy markets. Changes in global oil prices directly affect the country’s import bill, foreign exchange reserves and inflation. Energy analysts say international petroleum prices continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments, including tensions in the Middle East, decisions by OPEC+ countries, sanctions on major oil producers and disruptions in key global shipping routes. These factors can significantly impact crude oil prices and transportation costs, ultimately affecting domestic fuel prices in Pakistan.

    Congo Ebola outbreak surpasses 1,000 deaths at record pace

    Data from the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reveals that the ongoing Ebola outbreak declared on 15 May has killed over 1,000 people in just over two months. This marks the fastest-spreading outbreak of the virus on record, reaching 1,000 fatalities nearly three times quicker than the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic. As of Tuesday, the country has recorded 2,536 confirmed cases and 1,033 deaths, with the case fatality rate standing at 40 per cent. Unlike the 2014–2016 epidemic driven by the more common Ebola virus, the current surge is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or targeted therapeutic treatments. The outbreak remains largely concentrated across five eastern provinces near the Ugandan border. Health officials warn that the peak may still lie ahead due to late patient presentations, initial delays in identifying the strain, and a high proportion of new cases emerging outside monitored contact lists.
