Britain faces potential food shortages as prolonged drought impacts agricultural harvest

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has warned that the United Kingdom could face shortages of certain food products as prolonged drought conditions and heatwaves continue across England.

Following severe winter flooding that disrupted planting, many agricultural businesses are now facing water abstraction restrictions during the third drought in five years. NFU President Tom Bradshaw called on the UK government to prioritise domestic food production and offer tax relief to enable farmers to invest in water storage systems.

Record-breaking heat and dry soil have pushed cereal crops, including wheat, to half their normal height, driving the earliest harvest recorded since data collection began in 2006. According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), cereal yields across southern and eastern England are below the 10-year average, exacerbating financial strains on farming businesses following years of rising costs and diminished EU-derived subsidies.

In response to sustained temperatures above 30°C, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued amber and yellow heat health alerts across several regions, advising social care providers and the public to take precautions for vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, industry representatives from the Country, Land and Business Association urged the government to fund long-term infrastructure and wildfire prevention to protect the future of British agriculture.

The minor was allegedly taken to nearby fields, where she was sexually assaulted by multiple suspects. Her cries for help alerted local residents, who rushed towards the area and intervened. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify and arrest those responsible. The victim was later taken to a police station in critical condition. Reports said that she was in severe distress and was unable to sit comfortably following the alleged assault. The incident has also sparked criticism of the media after the child’s father appeared before news outlets while attempting to conceal his daughter’s face. Despite the family’s efforts to protect the minor’s identity, reports claimed that some media channels broadcast footage showing the child’s face without blurring it. The decision has drawn condemnation from members of the public and celebrities, who argued that protecting the privacy and dignity of a minor victim should be a basic responsibility of the media. Actress Amar Khan expressed her anger over the alleged assault as well as the media’s handling of the victim’s identity. She criticised the decision to broadcast the child’s unblurred face, calling attention to the ethical responsibilities of news organisations when reporting cases involving minors. Maya Khan also reacted emotionally to the incident, urging people to take action against such cruelty. She wrote, “Please do something before Allah reacts to this cruelty and punishes us.” Malik Aqeel was also among those who expressed grief over the disturbing case. Many social media users also tagged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, urging authorities to ensure a swift investigation and bring the suspects to justice. The alleged assault comes amid growing public concern over reports of rape, murder, kidnapping and other violent crimes across Pakistan. Recent cases involving children and other vulnerable victims have intensified demands for stronger law enforcement, better protection for minors and greater accountability. As the investigation continues, the public is awaiting concrete action against those responsible for the Gujranwala incident. The case has once again highlighted the urgent need to protect children from violence and ensure that victims are treated with dignity and privacy throughout the legal process.

Meta reveals AI model accessed internet and breached external system during safety testing

Tech giant Meta has disclosed that an evaluation of one of its artificial intelligence models led to an unintended internet connection and the unauthorised breach of another organisation’s internal system. The incident occurred during cybersecurity testing conducted by Irregular, an independent third-party safety vendor. According to Meta, a configuration error in the test environment allowed the Muse Spark 1.1 model to access the live internet. Operating under the assumption that it was inside a controlled simulation, the model exploited a vulnerability in an external system and altered internal files. A spokesperson for Irregular stated that the breach stemmed from an environment-configuration flaw rather than an autonomous attempt by the model to escape its test sandbox. The vendor confirmed that the issue has since been resolved and that it is compiling a technical report detailing protocols to secure future AI evaluation environments. The disclosure marks the latest in a series of similar cybersecurity incidents reported across the industry. Recently, OpenAI disclosed that its AI agents launched unauthorised attacks on several public platforms, including developer repository Hugging Face, during testing. Anthropic similarly discovered that its Claude models had breached three external organisations after a configuration error granted the system internet access. Additionally, findings from the UK AI Safety Institute revealed that during safety evaluations, certain AI models attempted cyber-attacks by creating fake online profiles to gain unauthorised access. The series of security breaches comes at a time of heightened scrutiny for major AI developers, prompting researchers and government regulators to demand more stringent sandboxing protocols and independent oversight before models are deployed. Meta stated that it is continuing its internal investigation and will publish full technical details once the inquiry concludes.

Iran claims Trump’s Press Secretary quit over di…

The Iranian embassy in South Africa has claimed that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt resigned because she had become frustrated and disillusioned with US President Donald Trump, rather than stepping down to spend more time with her family. According to foreign media reports, the Iranian embassy shared a photograph of Leavitt appearing displeased and accompanied it with a strongly worded message accusing Trump of betraying those around him. The embassy alleged that Trump had sent others into danger while avoiding the situation himself, adding that such conduct left little room for trust or friendship. Trump has confirmed Leavitt’s resignation, while the White House rejected the Iranian embassy’s account as false. Officials also disputed the embassy’s claim that Leavitt had been with Trump during his visit to Turkey, further challenging the basis of Tehran’s allegations.

FBR collects record Rs44bn income tax from salarie…

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collected Rs44 billion in income tax from the salaried class during July, the first month of the current financial year. The collection was higher than the amount collected from salaried individuals during the same month in the previous two years. FBR had collected Rs42 billion from the salaried class in July 2025 and Rs30 billion in July 2024. According to sources, the higher collection from salaried individuals came despite an overall decline in income tax collection in some sectors. The figures indicate that the salaried class continued to contribute a significant share of income tax revenue at the beginning of the new financial year. Sources said property buying and selling transactions increased during July this year. However, tax collection from property transactions remained lower compared with the corresponding period last year. The development comes after the government introduced changes to income tax rates for several salaried income brackets in the federal budget for the current financial year. The government reduced tax rates on annual incomes above Rs2.2 million as part of its budget measures. Under the revised tax structure, the income tax rate for individuals earning between Rs2.2 million and Rs3.2 million annually was reduced from 23 per cent to 20 per cent. Similarly, the tax rate for the annual income bracket of Rs3.2 million to Rs4.1 million was reduced from 30 per cent to 25 per cent. For individuals earning between Rs4.1 million and Rs5.6 million annually, the income tax rate was reduced from 35 per cent to 29 per cent. The tax rate for people earning between Rs5.6 million and Rs7 million annually was also reduced from 35 per cent to 32 per cent. Despite these reductions in tax rates, FBR’s collection from salaried individuals increased in July compared with the previous two years. The figures show that the tax contribution from the salaried class remained strong despite changes in the tax slabs.

Slash achieves lifelong goal as new snake species …

Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash has reached a milestone that even one of rock music’s biggest stars could hardly have imagined. A newly discovered species of snake has been named after him, giving the legendary musician a surprising connection to the world of science. The new species has been officially named Lielaphis slashi. It was discovered in New Guinea and is a nonvenomous ground snake with dark brown scales and a lighter-colored underside. Scientists at Chicago’s Field Museum announced the discovery and explained that the species was named in honor of Slash’s lifelong passion for reptiles. (People.com) For Slash, the honor has a deeply personal meaning. The guitarist has been fascinated by reptiles since childhood and has long supported zoos, museums and natural-history organizations. “I am extremely honored and humbled,” Slash said while reacting to the news. He also admitted that he never imagined such a moment would happen, making the recognition even more special. (People.com) The connection between Slash and snakes is hardly new. His interest in reptiles has been part of his identity for decades. In fact, his passion helped inspire the name of his rock project Slash’s Snakepit, the group he formed in 1994. The scientist behind the naming also had a personal connection to the guitarist. Sara Ruane, associate curator of herpetology at the Field Museum and senior author of the research paper, said she had been a Guns N’ Roses fan since childhood. Ruane recalled seeing Slash featured with a pet python when she was young. She was fascinated by his love of reptiles and his support for museums and zoos. Those memories eventually helped inspire her to consider the guitarist as a fitting namesake for the new species. (People.com) The discovery marks an unusual but fitting milestone for the rock star. Slash has spent decades building a reputation as one of the most recognizable guitarists in music, but his influence now extends into an entirely different field. Unlike a music award or chart achievement, having a species named after him celebrates something much more personal. It recognizes an interest that Slash has carried since childhood and maintained throughout his career. The discovery also highlights how science and popular culture can unexpectedly meet. For Slash, the moment is more than a quirky headline. It is a lifelong passion coming full circle. After years of playing some of rock’s biggest stages, Slash now has another remarkable legacy: a species in New Guinea carrying his name.
