Canadian carrier resolves cabin crew strike through provisional labor agreement

The industrial action carried out by WestJet flight attendants concluded following overnight negotiations that yielded a provisional contract between the Canadian airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 8125.

The resolution arrived early Monday morning after a brief strike that disrupted travel plans nationwide over the weekend.

Union leadership confirmed that the consensus marks progress regarding operational credit structures, ensuring better recognition and wage distribution for duties performed on the ground prior to takeoff, including passenger boarding and delay management.

Management at the carrier expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the dedication of the workforce. Unofficial terms indicate the proposal includes an immediate pay raise retroactive to the start of the year, alongside adjusted duty allocations.

While flight operations are slated to rebuild gradually pending safety verifications and roster adjustments, the negotiated terms remain subject to formal ratification by the union membership.

The court instructed the relevant authorities to complete the exhumation as soon as possible to facilitate a fresh medical examination. During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner argued that the police had no legal grounds to object to the exhumation, maintaining that the procedure would be carried out under the supervision of the Police Surgeon and the Medical Legal Officer (MLO), as required under the law. The lawyer further informed the court that the Police Surgeon had identified several deficiencies in the initial post-mortem report. According to the submissions, no X-rays were conducted, the exact cause of death was not conclusively established, and the report was allegedly prepared on assumptions rather than comprehensive medical findings. The court questioned how such an order could be passed without first issuing notice to the investigating officer. In response, the government prosecutor stated that the prosecution had no objection to the exhumation, describing the matter as one involving the search for the truth in a human life. The petitioner’s counsel argued that notifying the investigating officer at this stage could unnecessarily delay the proceedings and affect the timely collection of forensic evidence. After noting the prosecution’s no-objection stance, the court accepted the family’s application and directed the Health Secretary to form a medical board without delay. The board will supervise the exhumation and carry out the necessary medical examination to help determine the cause of death more accurately. The case has drawn public attention following questions raised by the deceased’s family over the circumstances surrounding Mir Ali Raza’s death and the quality of the initial forensic investigation. The court’s decision is expected to pave the way for an independent medical review, with the findings likely to play a significant role in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are now expected to begin the legal and administrative process required to carry out the exhumation under official supervision.

    The federal government has announced another reduction in petroleum prices, lowering the rates of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) effective August 5 under the recently introduced daily fuel pricing mechanism. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs3.39 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs328.56 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel has also been cut by Rs4.07 per litre, with the revised rate set at Rs385.86 per litre. The latest reduction follows a similar decrease announced a day earlier, reflecting continued adjustments under the government’s daily fuel price review system. The new pricing mechanism, introduced on July 17, determines fuel prices using a seven-day average of international oil market rates. The policy aims to align domestic petroleum prices more closely with global market trends and allow quicker adjustments in response to fluctuations in crude oil prices. Pakistan remains heavily dependent on imported crude oil and refined petroleum products, making local fuel prices highly sensitive to movements in international energy markets. Changes in global oil prices directly affect the country’s import bill, foreign exchange reserves and inflation. Energy analysts say international petroleum prices continue to be influenced by geopolitical developments, including tensions in the Middle East, decisions by OPEC+ countries, sanctions on major oil producers and disruptions in key global shipping routes. These factors can significantly impact crude oil prices and transportation costs, ultimately affecting domestic fuel prices in Pakistan.

    Government challenges SC order to shift Imran Khan…

    Islamabad: The federal government has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging its interim order directing the transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital. In its petition, the government described the Supreme Court’s interim order as an overreach of legal authority. It argued that the Pakistan Prison Rules, 1978, clearly prescribe the procedure for providing medical treatment to prisoners. According to the government, a prisoner can be shifted to a government civil hospital or a district headquarters hospital when necessary. However, it said there is no provision in the law for transferring a prisoner to a private hospital. The government also maintained that prison laws and the Prisons Act do not give a prisoner the right to receive treatment from a private doctor of his choice. The petition stated that Imran Khan’s case had been fixed for hearing for the first time and that he had not even been issued a notice. Despite this, the court issued an interim order regarding his medical treatment and transfer. The government argued that the court appeared to have reached the conclusion that Imran Khan’s health was deteriorating on the basis of a medical report. However, according to the petition, the report did not clearly indicate any such deterioration. It further stated that a medical board had examined Imran Khan several times. The government maintained that expert medical opinions should have been sought before making a decision on such a medical matter. The petition also challenged the use of Section 561-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, arguing that the provision cannot be used to interfere in matters falling within the jurisdiction of prison authorities. The government further objected to the relief granted to Imran Khan at the interim stage. It said four requests were effectively granted through the interim order, including his transfer to Shifa International Hospital, access to personal doctors, meetings with family members, and provision of medical reports to his lawyers. According to the government, such relief at the interim stage amounted to granting final relief without completing the regular legal proceedings. The petition also warned that allowing a special facility for Imran Khan at a private hospital could set a precedent for other prisoners. It argued that other inmates could make similar demands under prison laws, potentially creating a large number of such requests. The government maintained that providing such special treatment would also conflict with the principle of equal treatment of prisoners.
