    TEHRAN: The United States has reportedly conveyed a proposal to Iran under which Washington would ease its economic pressure and blockade measures in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to attacks by Iran-linked groups. According to a report by Al Arabiya English, the proposal was conveyed to Iranian officials during Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s recent visit to Tehran. The report attributed the details to a senior source and said the message was delivered as Pakistan continued its diplomatic efforts to help end the conflict. The source said Munir held a meeting with Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The meeting was described as “clear and decisive”. During the discussions, Munir reportedly called on Iran to stop attacks carried out by groups linked to Tehran. The Pakistani military chief also conveyed the US position on the need to restore conditions that could allow broader diplomatic engagement.     Telecom operators invest $178.57 million in Pakistan’s 5G rollout

    Pakistan’s major telecom operators have invested an estimated $178.57 million in the deployment of 5G networks across the country up to June 2026, the Senate has been informed. The investment details were presented in a written reply submitted by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications in response to a question raised by Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri. According to the government’s data, Zong emerged as the largest investor in the country’s 5G rollout, committing around $98.9 million by June 2026. Jazz followed with an investment of approximately $59.67 million, while Ufone invested an estimated $20 million during the same period. The figures were based on information provided directly by the respective mobile network operators. No Foreign Investment Target Set for 5G Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Shaza Fatima Khawaja told the Senate that the government had not imposed any specific foreign direct investment (FDI) target on telecom companies as part of the country’s 5G rollout policy. She said the Policy Directive for the Spectrum Auction, issued on January 6, 2026, did not include a requirement for operators to attract a particular amount of foreign investment for the deployment of 5G services. The minister clarified that the investment figures presented before the Senate represented data supplied by the operators themselves. Operators Plan Additional 5G Investment Telecom companies are also preparing to increase their investment in 5G infrastructure during fiscal year 2026-27. Jazz has projected an additional investment of approximately $30.33 million, while Zong expects to spend around $39.9 million on further 5G deployment during the year. A specific investment projection for Ufone was not available at this stage. According to the written response, the company’s future investment figures will be shared once its ongoing merger-related activities are completed. The government also noted that Ufone’s previously reported $20 million investment in the 5G rollout was an estimated figure. More Than 1,100 Sites Upgraded to 5G The Senate was also informed that mobile operators had upgraded 1,136 sites to support 5G services across Pakistan by June 2026. Punjab recorded the highest number of upgraded sites, with 587 locations, reflecting the province’s large subscriber base and extensive telecom infrastructure. The regional breakdown showed:  Punjab: 587 5G-upgraded sites  Sindh: 262 sites  Islamabad Capital Territory: 192 sites Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 64 sites Balochistan: 31 sites No 5G-upgraded sites were reported in Gilgit-Baltistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir in the province-wise figures submitted to the Senate. Pakistan Has 10,499 Fiberized Sites The government’s response also provided an update on the country’s broader telecom infrastructure, particularly the expansion of fiber-optic connectivity. Pakistan had a total of 10,499 fiberized telecom sites, with the overall fiberization rate standing at approximately 17.2 percent. Punjab had the largest number of fiberized sites at 6,153, followed by Sindh with 2,121 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 953. The figures for other regions were: Islamabad: 521 fiberized sites Balochistan: 417 sites Gilgit-Baltistan: 196 sites Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 138 sites Despite having fewer fiberized locations in absolute numbers, Gilgit-Baltistan recorded the highest fiberization rate at 36.3 percent. Islamabad ranked second with a rate of 30.4 percent. Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded the lowest fiberization rate at 9.5 percent. 5G Expansion Linked to Digital Connectivity The continued investment by telecom operators is expected to support the expansion of high-speed mobile connectivity and strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. The deployment of 5G technology is also being viewed as an important step toward improving mobile broadband capacity, supporting digital businesses and enabling emerging technologies that require faster and more reliable networks. With operators planning further investment during FY2026-27, the scale of Pakistan’s 5G network is expected to expand further. However, the pace of deployment will also depend on infrastructure development, fiberization, spectrum utilization and the completion of ongoing corporate and regulatory processes.

    PM forms top panel to revive Iran gas pipeline

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a high-level committee to find a mutually acceptable solution to the long-delayed Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project, which has remained stuck for more than a decade. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik informed the Senate that the committee is examining the legal, financial and energy implications of the project. It will assess Pakistan’s potential financial exposure in the ongoing arbitration process while also considering the country’s future energy requirements. The minister was responding to a calling-attention notice raised by Senator Talha Mahmood. He said the government was seeking a negotiated solution rather than allowing the dispute to become more complicated through prolonged litigation. Describing Iran as a “brotherly country”, Malik said the leadership of Pakistan and Iran remained in contact and was working towards an amicable settlement. He noted that Iran had already completed substantial infrastructure on its side of the project. Iranian authorities have brought gas from the South Pars field towards a major city close to the Pakistani border. The dispute over the pipeline has reached international arbitration in Paris. Pakistan is therefore assessing the possible financial consequences of the project delays and the legal proceedings before deciding its next course of action. The government is also reviewing whether the pipeline can be made commercially viable. Pakistan has previously asked Iran to cut its gas price by around 50 per cent and reduce the proposed supply volume because several domestic sectors have shown limited interest in purchasing Iranian gas at existing prices. Officials have said that domestic consumers and fertiliser plants are currently receiving gas at significantly lower prices than the cost at which imported gas could be supplied through the project. Power producers have also indicated that purchasing imported gas at prices above Rs2,000 per million British thermal units would not be commercially feasible. The government has therefore been considering a lower price as a potential benchmark for making the pipeline economically sustainable. Pakistan has also indicated that it could move ahead with the project if the United States provides a waiver allowing energy cooperation with Iran despite Washington’s sanctions regime. The Iran-Pakistan pipeline, commonly known as the Peace Pipeline, was originally designed to transport Iranian natural gas to Pakistan and help address the country’s long-term energy needs. Iran completed a substantial portion of the pipeline within its territory. Pakistan, however, did not complete its section by the agreed deadline, leaving the project largely dormant. US sanctions against Iran, difficulties in securing financing and wider geopolitical tensions have complicated Pakistan’s efforts to complete the project. The issue has also resulted in legal disputes between the two countries. Iran initiated international arbitration proceedings in Paris over delays in the implementation of the project. Meanwhile, the petroleum minister told the Senate that the government was separately addressing gas-related problems in Balochistan. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had instructed him to engage with provincial stakeholders. Another high-level committee, headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, is examining gas-related issues in the province, including technical and payment-related matters.     Bannu police revolt over seven officials’ transf…

He said members of the peace committees had worked alongside police to maintain security and restore peace in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Tank. The boycott reportedly affected security arrangements at several important government and sensitive locations. The absence of traffic personnel also caused congestion at various points in Bannu and Lakki Marwat, leaving commuters facing delays. The transfer orders were issued by the Peshawar Central Police Office on the directions of the Additional Inspector General. Seven personnel were moved to different districts and units. Under the orders, Head Constable Nisar Ali was transferred from Police Lines Lower Dir to PTS Swat. Constable Ghulam Abbas Khan was moved from Elite Force Peshawar to Haripur, while Constable Muhammad Arif was transferred from Elite Force Peshawar to Dera Ismail Khan. Constable Shafiullah was transferred from Investigation Bannu to Swat. Constable Muhammad Atif Khan was moved from Elite Force Bannu to Upper Chitral. Meanwhile, Constable Samiullah was transferred from Lakki Marwat to the Counter Terrorism Department in Peshawar, while Constable Khalid Rahman was moved from District Traffic Mobile Lakki Marwat to Shangla. Police personnel have argued that sudden transfers to distant districts could create difficulties for the affected officials and their families. They have called for the orders to be reconsidered. Authorities have so far not issued a detailed official response to the reported boycott or confirmed whether disciplinary action will be taken against personnel who stopped performing their duties. IGP transfer also under review The protest comes amid uncertainty over the appointment of a new K-P inspector general of police. The proposed transfer of IGP Zulfikar Hameed was put on hold a day earlier as the federal government sought further consultations over the candidates proposed for the post. Provincial government sources said the list of three senior police officers submitted for consideration could be revised. One name may be removed, while another officer could potentially be added before the appointment process resumes. A senior police official said the transfer of the current IGP was not being actively pursued for the moment because of the worsening security situation in the southern districts. The official said the provincial police chief was therefore likely to remain in his position temporarily while consultations between the federal and provincial governments continued.

      Islamabad:Details of the salaries and benefits of senior officials at Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC) were presented before the Senate, revealing that the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer receives a basic monthly salary of more than Rs. 5.56 million. The information was shared with parliament as part of a disclosure concerning the remuneration packages of senior executives at the state-owned exploration and production company. The figures show significant differences in the basic salaries of OGDC’s top management, with the company’s highest-paid official earning several million rupees each month before allowances and other facilities are added. According to the details presented in the Senate, Ahmed Hayat Lak, OGDC’s Managing Director and CEO, receives a basic monthly salary of Rs. 5,564,171. Chief Financial Officer Muhammad Anas Farooq earns Rs. 2,837,940 per month, while Executive Director Petroleum Muhammad Aamir Saleem receives Rs. 2,211,990. Among other executive directors, Shehzad Safdar, Executive Director Human Resources, has a basic monthly salary of Rs. 1,889,298. Zia Salahuddin, Executive Director Services, receives Rs. 1,849,433, while Atif Ghafoor Mirza, Executive Director Joint Ventures and Business Development, earns Rs. 1,893,434. The salaries of general managers are comparatively lower but still substantial. Khurram Shehraz, General Manager Internal Audit, receives Rs. 1,100,929 per month. Dr. Khalid Ameen Khan, General Manager Exploration, earns Rs. 900,881, while General Manager Production Habib Ullah Chohan receives Rs. 700,443. The company secretary, Waseem Ahmad, has a basic monthly salary of Rs. 607,754. In addition to their basic salaries, the ten senior officials are entitled to several allowances and facilities. They are also provided with car and fuel facilities. After the applicable allowances are included, the monthly remuneration package of the OGDC managing director exceeds Rs. 8.6 million. The CFO’s overall monthly package is reported to be more than Rs. 4.4 million. The information presented to the Senate also showed that all ten officials have more than three decades of professional experience. Most of the executives were recruited through press advertisements and headhunters before being appointed by OGDC’s Board of Directors. Their educational qualifications include professional and advanced degrees in fields such as law, chartered accountancy, business administration, engineering and geophysics. The MD is based in Islamabad, while other senior executives are posted in Islamabad, Karachi, Quetta and Sukkur. OGDC is Pakistan’s largest exploration and production company and is listed on the stock exchange, with the government holding a majority share. The disclosure has drawn attention to the compensation structures followed by state-owned enterprises. During the Senate proceedings, questions were raised regarding whether OGDC’s remuneration packages are comparable with those offered by private-sector exploration and production companies. Senators also discussed the possible impact of high executive compensation on the company’s overall operational expenses.     Multan commissioner vows faster development drive

    Multan Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan has said the Punjab government is taking a keen interest in the development of Multan and other parts of southern Punjab, stressing that the government, administration, business community and journalists must work together to address public issues and promote regional development. He made these remarks while speaking to journalists during a session titled “Guftagu” at the Multan Press Club. He also responded to questions regarding development projects, civic problems and other issues faced by citizens. The commissioner said the responsibility of government officers was not limited to sitting in offices. Officials must visit the field, assess public problems and take practical steps to resolve them. He said public service required officials to move beyond their comfort zones and remain connected with citizens. Aamir Karim Khan appreciated the Punjab government’s focus on Multan and southern Punjab, saying several major development projects were currently underway in the city. He stressed that timely availability of funds, proper engineering designs and other technical requirements were essential for completing development schemes. He said major sewerage projects in Multan were particularly important for the city and would provide significant relief to residents once completed. Work was also continuing on several major roads and development schemes, although some projects had faced delays because of land acquisition and other legal and administrative procedures. The commissioner said projects in areas including Eidgah Road and Shah Shams Park were being completed in phases. He added that a proposal worth around Rs6 billion had been sent to the Punjab government for improving roads from Delhi Gate to Daulat Gate and removing encroachments. Work on the project would begin once funds were made available. He said the preservation of Multan’s historic heritage, improvement of ancient gates and beautification of the city were among the administration’s priorities, along with the provision of basic civic facilities. He said action against encroachments on graveyards was continuing. Encroachments had been removed from a graveyard in Hassan Parwana, while similar operations would be carried out at other graveyards. The administration was also considering the renovation of smaller graveyards and provision of basic facilities there. The commissioner said a “Multan Enforcement Management Squad” had been established to tackle encroachments. The squad comprises officials from different departments and has been provided with motorcycles. It will monitor the city around the clock and identify encroachments. Its formal operations will begin on September 1. If the initiative proves successful, it will be expanded to other areas. Speaking about special education, Aamir Karim Khan said nearly 3,000 hearing-impaired children had been screened across 14 tehsils of the Multan Division. Around 320 children were identified as requiring hearing devices. With support from the business community, hearing aids had already been provided to 175 children. He said efforts were also underway to improve the speaking abilities of these children. The commissioner added that the Punjab government had been requested to introduce legislation making hearing screening mandatory for every child within six months of birth. Early diagnosis, he said, could significantly improve children’s education and future prospects. Regarding Jalalpur Public School, the commissioner said authorities had taken notice of the low number of students and were working with relevant departments to improve its functioning. He said the Punjab government was also working on a new public-private partnership scheme under which inactive government schools could be handed over to the private sector for better management. Aamir Karim Khan highlighted the important role of journalists in resolving civic problems. He urged journalists to use their observation, reporting and writing skills to identify public issues and contribute to social improvement. He said constructive criticism and highlighting genuine problems could help guide the administration. He also said direct communication with journalists would be strengthened so their concerns could be addressed more effectively. On cleanliness, the commissioner said maintaining a clean environment was a shared responsibility of the government and citizens. He urged shopkeepers to keep areas outside their businesses clean and residents to ensure cleanliness around their homes. During the meeting, Press Club President Shakeel Anjum briefed the commissioner about issues faced by the journalist community, particularly problems concerning the journalists’ colony. He stressed the need for their early resolution. The commissioner assured the journalists that he would contact the Director General of the Multan Development Authority regarding the issues and take steps for further progress. He said genuine concerns of the journalist community would be addressed on a priority basis. Aamir Karim Khan also answered journalists’ questions on various issues and assured them that practical measures would be taken to resolve public problems. He said the development of Multan was a collective responsibility and all stakeholders would have to work together to achieve this goal.
