An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad has granted police another seven days of physical remand of Saad Abbasi, who is accused of killing Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq.

Abbasi was produced before the court on Monday after completing his initial seven-day physical remand.

ATC Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain heard the case. The prosecution requested an additional 15 days of physical remand to continue the investigation.

Prosecutor Raja Naveed Hussain Kayani told the court that police had recovered the pistol allegedly used in the killing. He said the suspect had allegedly concealed the weapon after the incident.

The prosecution also informed the court that investigators had yet to recover the suspect’s mobile phone. Police said the phone could provide further information relevant to the investigation.

After hearing arguments from the prosecution, the court reserved its decision on the remand request.

The court later approved seven more days of physical remand. Abbasi was handed back to police custody for further investigation.

The court directed police to produce the suspect before it again after the completion of the additional remand period.

The case relates to the death of Group Captain Asim Tariq in Islamabad on July 5.

According to the investigation, the PAF officer intervened when the suspect allegedly attempted to forcibly take a woman away.

The situation reportedly escalated after Tariq intervened. The suspect allegedly opened fire, and the officer was struck by a bullet.

Tariq succumbed to his injuries and was later declared a martyr.

Islamabad police arrested Abbasi within nine hours of the incident.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police are also working to recover the suspect’s mobile phone and gather additional evidence.

He criticised the failure to fully implement the provision and recalled that MQM-P had previously approached the Supreme Court over the issue. He argued that creating additional provinces was not unconstitutional and said Parliament could debate the appropriate mechanism for establishing them. He also questioned whether existing provinces should have the sole authority to decide on their own division. MQM-P leader and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said the party’s proposal was aimed at administrative restructuring rather than dividing communities or territories. He argued that people should have greater control over local leadership and governance, particularly when their cities face serious problems in living standards and public services.     Eight killed as torrential rains devastate Sindh

    US waives $20,000 visa bond for Pakistanis

    Pakistan has been excluded from the United States’ newly permanent visa bond programme, meaning Pakistani applicants will not be required to deposit a refundable financial guarantee of up to $20,000 when applying for certain US visitor visas. The United States has officially made its 2025 Visa Bond Pilot Program a permanent policy. Under the programme, nationals of selected countries applying for business or tourist visas must provide a refundable financial bond ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 as part of the visa application process. According to international reports, the revised policy increases the maximum refundable bond amount from $15,000 to $20,000 for eligible applicants from countries included in the programme. The list reportedly includes around 50 countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, and several African nations. Pakistan is not included in the list of countries subject to the visa bond requirement. Afghanistan, India, and Iran are also excluded from the programme. As a result, Pakistani citizens applying for US visitor visas will continue to follow the standard visa application process without the additional refundable financial guarantee required under the permanent visa bond policy.
