Daily petrol prices trigger Senate debate over tra…

Islamabad: Pakistan’s new daily petroleum pricing system came under serious discussion in the Senate as lawmakers questioned whether the mechanism is providing relief to consumers or creating new challenges for the public and fuel dealers.

The Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum reviewed the daily petrol price determination system and demanded clarity over why the government replaced the previous fortnightly price revision system with daily changes.

The committee questioned the reasons behind the new policy and asked whether frequent price adjustments were helping ordinary citizens or increasing uncertainty in the fuel market.

Federal Minister for Petroleum informed the committee that the government had removed political influence from the petroleum pricing process by giving the responsibility of setting prices to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), an independent regulator.

He said the new system was introduced to make petroleum price decisions more transparent and based on market conditions.

OGRA Chairman informed the committee that petrol prices are calculated through a seven day average of international Platts benchmark prices.

He explained that instead of directly passing sudden changes in international oil markets to consumers, the seven day average spreads the impact over time.

According to OGRA, the system helps reduce sudden price shocks, especially during international tensions and market uncertainty.

Officials said the daily pricing mechanism also aims to discourage people from creating artificial shortages or making unfair profits through speculation.

However, senators raised concerns about the effect of frequent price changes on citizens and businesses. The committee expressed concern over the high tax burden on petroleum products and questioned how increasing fuel costs affect the daily lives of ordinary people.

Representatives of the Petroleum Dealers Association informed the committee that frequent price revisions were creating operational difficulties for fuel dealers.

They said continuous price changes make business planning more difficult and require better coordination between authorities and dealers.

The committee directed OGRA to consult all stakeholders, including petroleum dealers, and prepare practical recommendations to address their concerns.

Members also stressed the need for greater use of technology in the petroleum supply chain to prevent fuel smuggling, adulteration and illegal storage.

The committee said a stronger digital monitoring system could improve transparency and ensure consumers receive better quality fuel.

Senator Umer Farooq chaired the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum, where members reviewed the new pricing system and related petroleum sector issues.

The committee emphasized that petroleum pricing directly affects every citizen because fuel costs influence transportation, business expenses and prices of daily goods.

Members said the government and regulators must ensure that any pricing system protects consumers while maintaining stability in the petroleum market.

The committee directed OGRA to continue reviewing the mechanism and ensure that the interests of consumers remain the top priority.

Zelensky alleges Russia shared satellite intelligence with Iran to target US bases

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of helping Iran identify US military positions in the Gulf by providing satellite intelligence, adding another layer of tension to the already strained relationship between Moscow, Tehran, and Kyiv. His remarks come as Ukraine and Iran exchange fresh accusations following an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea. In a statement shared on social media, Zelensky claimed that Ukraine had observed increased Russian satellite monitoring of Gulf countries and American military installations since the beginning of July. According to him, the satellite images were later used by Iran, with a noticeable connection between the timing of the surveillance and Iranian attacks. He alleged that the imagery was gathered before strikes to assist with planning and then again afterward to evaluate the extent of the damage. While Zelensky did not release evidence to support the claim, he insisted the pattern was clear and significant. The allegations surfaced shortly after Ukraine announced a series of long range military operations in the Caspian Sea. Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had successfully struck vessels carrying military cargo linked to Iran as well as a warship. Ukrainian intelligence later stated that drones had targeted sanctioned cargo ships allegedly involved in transporting military equipment between Iran and Russia. The operation marked one of Kyiv’s most direct actions against assets connected to Tehran and reflected Ukraine’s growing willingness to challenge countries it believes are supporting Russia’s war effort. Iran reacted strongly to the reported strikes. The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s senior diplomat in Tehran to protest what it described as a hostile and unlawful attack. Iranian officials said one sailor was killed and several others were injured when a commercial vessel exploded following the strike. The ministry rejected any suggestion that Iran had played a role in the war between Russia and Ukraine and insisted the country had remained outside the conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also condemned the attack, describing it as a serious violation of the United Nations Charter. He claimed the operation had been carried out to advance Israeli interests and accused Kyiv of trying to draw Europe deeper into the regional conflict. Araghchi said he had discussed the matter with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, warning that Iran would not allow the incident to pass without a response. Zelensky’s latest accusations regarding Russian support for Iran are not entirely new. Earlier reports citing US officials claimed that Moscow had shared intelligence with Tehran about American military positions in the Middle East during the recent conflict involving Iran and the United States. Those reports also suggested that China could have played a supporting role, although no public evidence has confirmed those claims. The issue has also created mixed messages within the US government. During a congressional hearing, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged that Russia and China were helping Iran in different ways. He said there was clear cooperation among American rivals but declined to discuss the full extent of that support, arguing that the details should remain classified for security reasons. Only days later, however, President Donald Trump publicly disagreed with that assessment. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he did not believe Russia or China had assisted Iran. He stated that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping had assured him they were not involved in supporting Iranian military operations. Despite those conflicting views, Zelensky maintained that Russian satellite activity offered direct evidence of cooperation. He specifically pointed to satellite surveillance conducted on July 19 and 20, claiming Russian satellites closely monitored four air bases used by the United States in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait. According to the Ukrainian leader, the timing of those observations raised serious concerns about Russia’s role in helping Iran monitor American military assets in the region.

    Spider-Man producer’s dating warning to Tom Holl…

Tom Holland and Zendaya have become one of Hollywood’s most admired couples, but their romance almost came with a warning from someone who knew them best. Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal previously revealed that she advised both actors not to pursue a relationship when they were first cast together—a piece of advice that ultimately proved impossible for the pair to follow. (nytimes.com) Pascal recently looked back on the now-famous conversation, acknowledging that her warning had clearly backfired. Speaking about the couple, she admitted that despite her best intentions, Holland and Zendaya forged a genuine relationship that has continued to grow stronger over the years. Their romance has become one of Hollywood’s most successful love stories, earning admiration from fans around the world. (people.com) In a 2021 interview with The New York Times, Pascal explained that she had spoken to the actors separately when they joined the Spider-Man franchise. “I took Tom and Zendaya aside separately when we first cast them and gave them a lecture,” she recalled. “Don’t go there. Just don’t. Try not to.” Pascal said she had learned from previous experiences that romances between co-stars could sometimes complicate a film’s production if the relationship later ended. (nytimes.com) However, life had different plans. After years of friendship and working closely together on the Spider-Man films, Holland and Zendaya confirmed their relationship in 2021 when they were photographed sharing a kiss in Los Angeles. Since then, the couple has remained remarkably private while continuing to support one another at movie premieres, award ceremonies and public events. (people.com) Pascal has since embraced the relationship, often speaking warmly about the pair. She has praised both actors for maintaining professionalism on set while building a healthy relationship away from the cameras. According to the producer, Holland and Zendaya have managed to balance their personal and professional lives in a way that few celebrity couples achieve. (people.com) The couple’s bond has continued to flourish, with engagement reports earlier this year adding to excitement among fans, although neither star has publicly shared extensive details about their future plans. What remains clear is that their relationship has endured despite the intense public attention that often surrounds celebrity romances. (people.com) Looking back, Pascal’s caution came from experience rather than doubt. Yet Tom Holland and Zendaya ultimately proved that workplace romances do not always end in heartbreak. Instead, they transformed a friendship that began on a superhero set into one of Hollywood’s strongest and most enduring relationships—showing that sometimes the best love stories begin when people ignore well-meaning advice.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has resumed hearing a case seeking the cancellation of bail granted to 49 suspects allegedly linked to the suicide attack on Chinese engineers in Bisham. A prosecution appeal has been filed before the top court. It seeks the cancellation of bail granted to the suspects in the case. During the hearing, Justice Naeem Akhtar asked whether the suspects were regularly appearing before the trial court. The judge also asked whether the suspects wanted to engage lawyers to represent them in the proceedings. The court directed the suspects to appear at the next hearing with their lawyers. It made it clear that failure to comply with the order could result in the cancellation of their bail. The court did not cancel the bail at the latest hearing. Instead, it gave the suspects an opportunity to ensure their appearance and legal representation. The Supreme Court then adjourned the proceedings until August 20. The case relates to the suicide attack in Bisham, where Chinese engineers were targeted. Colombia’s death toll from earthquake climbs…

Rescue crews continue combing through collapsed buildings across western Colombia after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the region on Monday, August 10, with officials confirming the death toll has risen to at least 164 people. Authorities said more than 880 people have sustained injuries, while over 3,200 remain unaccounted for as soldiers, emergency responders and local volunteers work through debris from dozens of collapsed structures. Thousands of residents have been forced from their homes since the quake struck, adding to the scale of the humanitarian response now underway. The earthquake flattened multi story buildings in cities including Pereira and Cali, and severely damaged one of the towers of a historic cathedral in Manizales. The tremor originated at an intermediate depth with its epicenter located near San José del Palmar in the western department of Chocó, causing widespread destruction across Pereira, Cali, Manizales and other communities in Colombia’s coffee growing region. Residential buildings, hospitals, schools and key infrastructure, including several regional airports, all suffered severe damage in the quake. At one city hospital, several upper floors, including sections dedicated to pediatric care, collapsed inward, trapping some patients inside and forcing hospital staff to treat roughly 600 additional patients outdoors on a street littered with debris, according to hospital director Irne Torres Castro, who spoke to a Colombian television network. That same city saw some of the earthquake’s most extensive destruction, with entire residential blocks reduced to piles of concrete and twisted metal. Video circulating online captured buildings shaking violently as residents fled into the streets, while separate footage showed a regional airport swaying dramatically during the quake as large sections of ceiling came down around people sheltering inside. Among the most widely shared images online is footage showing the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary shaking and partially collapsing. The cathedral, built in the 1920s, holds the distinction of being Colombia’s tallest cathedral and ranks among the highest neo Gothic churches anywhere in the Americas. The disaster struck just days after Abelardo De La Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s president, immediately confronting his new administration with a major crisis. The earthquake also comes with memories still fresh of a pair of devastating earthquakes that struck neighboring Venezuela in June. Colombia’s national government has declared a state of emergency and mobilized the military, police and specialized rescue units to lead recovery operations, while accepting offers of international assistance as the search for survivors continues. The disaster adds to a string of major seismic events across the region in recent months, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of Andean nations to powerful earthquakes and the strain such disasters place on emergency infrastructure even in areas with established disaster response systems.
