Data Darbar revamp to be completed before next Urs…

LAHORE: Secretary and Chief Administrator Auqaf Punjab Dr. Ehsan Bhutta has directed authorities to complete all ongoing development, expansion, renovation and beautification projects at the historic Data Darbar before next year’s Urs.

During a detailed inspection of the shrine and surrounding areas, Dr. Bhutta reviewed the progress and quality of the ongoing projects and instructed officials to accelerate construction while maintaining high standards of workmanship.

He said the Punjab government is committed to providing millions of devotees and spiritual visitors from across Pakistan and abroad with safe, dignified and modern facilities. The upgraded arrangements are expected to improve cleanliness, security, parking, movement and other essential services at the shrine.

Dr. Bhutta stressed that neither the quality nor timely completion of the projects would be compromised, particularly given the large number of visitors throughout the year and the significant influx of devotees during the annual Urs.

The inspection team included senior officials from NESPAK, TEPA, the Communication and Works Department and Auqaf Punjab. The delegation also visited the shrine, laid a chadar and offered Fateha, praying for peace, prosperity and progress in Pakistan.

Later, Dr. Bhutta visited Sharqpur Sharif in connection with its annual Urs celebrations, where he laid a chadar and offered prayers. He also inspected the city’s historic mosque, which has been restored and modernized with the cooperation of the Sharqpuri family.

Auqaf officials briefed him on the remaining restoration work and assured him that the outstanding projects at the mosque would be completed within two months.

Pakistan ranks fifth globally in viral Hepatitis b…

Pakistan has been ranked among the countries with the highest number of viral hepatitis cases worldwide, with the country standing fifth globally in total hepatitis burden, according to the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA). The warning was issued on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day, highlighting the growing public health challenge caused by hepatitis B and C infections. PMA Secretary General Dr Abdul Ghafoor Shoro said Pakistan has one of the world’s largest burdens of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), with around 10 million people suffering from chronic Hepatitis C. In addition, an estimated 3.8 million people are living with chronic Hepatitis B (HBV), bringing the total number of people affected by viral hepatitis in the country to approximately 13.8 million. According to the PMA, Pakistan’s hepatitis burden is higher than many countries and is exceeded only by China, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria. The national prevalence rate of Hepatitis C is estimated between 4.8 and 7.5 percent, while Hepatitis B affects around 1.1 to 1.7 percent of the population. Health experts warned that untreated hepatitis can lead to serious complications, including liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, which collectively claim more than 37,000 lives in Pakistan every year. Dr Shoro stated that Pakistan contributes a significant share of new global Hepatitis C infections due to unsafe medical practices. He highlighted that thousands of new infections occur annually because of the reuse of unsterilized syringes, unsafe medical equipment, and unscreened blood transfusions. Other major causes of hepatitis transmission include unsafe surgical procedures, dental treatments, tattooing, body piercing, shaving with contaminated razors at barber shops, and practices carried out by unqualified healthcare providers. Low coverage of the mandatory Hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine has also remained a concern. President Asif Ali Zardari said hepatitis remains one of the country’s most serious public health challenges but emphasized that it can be prevented and treated through early detection, timely medical care, and collective efforts. He stressed the need for strict regulation of unsafe healthcare practices and awareness campaigns to protect citizens. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also highlighted the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, and access to quality treatment. He said strengthening the healthcare system and improving public awareness are essential steps toward reducing the disease burden. Health authorities and public representatives called for greater cooperation between government institutions, healthcare providers, and communities to control hepatitis transmission and improve treatment access across Pakistan.

Kushner’s Gaza mission end in deadlock as Israel…

JERUSALEM: US President Donald Trump’s envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner has concluded two days of talks with Israeli and Hamas representatives without securing a clear breakthrough in efforts to revive Washington’s Gaza peace plan. Kushner met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, following discussions with Hamas political leader Khalil Al-Hayya in Egypt a day earlier. The meetings were aimed at overcoming the deadlock surrounding the US-backed plan as fighting and Israeli military operations continue in Gaza. An Israeli official said Netanyahu made clear that Israel would not withdraw from the positions outlined in the October ceasefire arrangement and would continue military operations in Gaza when deemed necessary. Israel has also maintained that reconstruction cannot begin until Hamas is fully disarmed. The meeting between Kushner and Netanyahu lasted several hours and was also attended by Nickolay Mladenov, the Trump administration’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza. Israeli officials described the discussions as deep and constructive, while a Board of Peace official called them productive and said the sides had agreed on a possible way forward without providing further details. Netanyahu’s office said Israel and the Board of Peace agreed that Gaza’s disarmament and demilitarisation must be completed before major reconstruction begins. The two sides also agreed to form working groups focused on disarmament as well as sanitation, clean water and other public health needs in the territory. The talks come as Netanyahu faces a challenging election campaign ahead of the October 27 vote, making major concessions on Gaza politically difficult, according to diplomats. Kushner’s meeting with Hamas representatives in Egypt was his second known engagement with the group. He previously participated in talks with Hamas alongside US envoy Steve Witkoff in October 2025, negotiations that contributed to a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Earlier, Jared Kushner met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday as Washington stepped up efforts to revive its stalled plan for ending the Gaza war. The meeting came a day after Kushner held talks in Cairo with Hamas representatives, including senior leader Khalil Al-Hayya, marking his second known direct engagement with the Palestinian group. Kushner was accompanied in Jerusalem by Trump’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov. The latest diplomatic push comes amid deep disagreements over the implementation of the US-backed Gaza plan. Under the proposal, Hamas and other armed groups would surrender their weapons while Israeli forces would gradually withdraw from Gaza. An international stabilisation force, alongside a new Palestinian police force, would then help maintain security in the territory. Netanyahu, however, has insisted that Israeli troops will not withdraw until Hamas and other armed groups are fully disarmed. Israel has also rejected a separate US-backed roadmap aimed at moving the broader peace plan forward. Diplomats say Israel is unlikely to make major concessions on Gaza ahead of the country’s October 27 election, adding another challenge to Washington’s efforts to break the deadlock. The talks have gained urgency as implementation of the ceasefire framework remains limited, with Israeli strikes continuing in Gaza despite commitments under the US plan. Hamas has said it accepts the proposed disarmament framework but argues that its implementation depends on Israel fulfilling its own obligations, including withdrawing forces and ending attacks. Kushner previously met Hamas officials alongside US envoy Steve Witkoff in October 2025. Those discussions helped produce an agreement that led to a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages captured during the October 7, 2023 attack. The latest meetings suggest Washington is seeking to reopen negotiations and bridge the widening gap between Israel and Hamas before the Gaza peace initiative loses further momentum.

PPP leader Nadeem Afzal Chan criticizes Punjab gov…

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Secretary for Information Nadeem Afzal Chan has strongly responded to a speech delivered by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a public gathering in Muzaffarabad. In his statement, Chan accused the Punjab chief minister of making false allegations against the Pakistan Peoples Party and rejected the claims made during her address. Responding to Maryam Nawaz’s remarks, Nadeem Afzal Chan said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) should focus on addressing its own governance challenges instead of criticizing political opponents. He alleged that the party’s poor governance and corruption had negatively affected Punjab and claimed that the current condition of the province reflected years of administrative failure. Chan argued that the slogan of “Clean Punjab” had remained only a political promise and had not translated into meaningful improvements on the ground. According to him, the situation across the province demonstrates that many of the commitments made by the Punjab government have not been fulfilled.   Referring to the recent heavy rainfall in different parts of Punjab, the PPP leader claimed that a single spell of rain exposed weaknesses in the province’s infrastructure and urban management. He said that roads in several cities were submerged under water, creating serious difficulties for residents and disrupting normal daily life. Many people, he alleged, were forced to remain inside their homes because flooded streets made travel difficult and unsafe.   Nadeem Afzal Chan specifically mentioned the cities of Gujranwala and Layyah, describing their condition after the rainfall as particularly concerning. According to him, streets, markets, and residential areas in these cities resembled rivers and streams due to inadequate drainage systems. He argued that the flooding highlighted shortcomings in planning and municipal services despite repeated claims of development by the provincial government.   The PPP leader further criticized what he described as excessive government spending on publicity campaigns. He said billions of rupees had allegedly been spent on advertisements promoting the Punjab government’s performance, but the actual situation experienced by citizens painted a very different picture. In his view, the condition of roads and public infrastructure after the rainfall contradicted the government’s claims of effective governance and development.   Chan also accused the Punjab government of setting new records for corruption, alleging that financial irregularities had become a growing concern under the current administration. He claimed that additional controversies could emerge in the near future, including what he described as a potential wheat-related scandal. According to him, the details of the matter would soon become public, though he did not provide specific evidence to support the allegation. The remarks by Nadeem Afzal Chan reflect the continuing political rivalry between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, with both parties frequently criticizing each other’s governance and policy decisions. Political exchanges between government and opposition leaders have intensified in recent months, particularly over issues related to public services, infrastructure, and economic management. The Punjab government has not immediately responded to Chan’s latest allegations. As political debate continues, issues such as urban infrastructure, flood management, public spending, and governance remain central topics in Pakistan’s political discourse, with both government and opposition parties presenting differing views on the province’s performance and future priorities.

Mustafa Kamal calls for new provinces, questions p…

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal has renewed his call for the creation of new provinces in Pakistan, arguing that the country’s existing administrative structure is no longer adequate to serve its rapidly growing population. Speaking at the Pakistan Pharma Healthcare Expo, Kamal said debates over provincial boundaries were often framed as matters of honour and pride, but questioned why the same concern was not shown when children lost their lives after falling into open sewerage drains. He argued that Pakistan’s four provinces cover vast territories and that smaller administrative units could improve governance and ensure that public funds reach local communities more effectively. Kamal said the federal government distributes Rs8,884 billion annually among the provinces, but questioned the lack of an effective mechanism to ensure that funds reach union councils and communities at the grassroots level. He noted that Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are larger in area than many countries, while Sindh and Balochistan also cover territories exceeding those of numerous states around the world. According to him, Pakistan’s population has grown dramatically since the country had only around 37 million people, yet the number of provinces has remained unchanged. The minister cited countries such as Sri Lanka, Iran and India as examples of states with more administrative units, arguing that the creation of additional provinces would not weaken Pakistan but could instead strengthen the federation. Kamal also linked administrative shortcomings to growing security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where security personnel continue to lose their lives. He said Pakistan needed fundamental reforms to address the causes behind instability and improve governance. Turning to the issue of public infrastructure, the minister questioned the political focus on provincial identity when basic safety measures such as covering open sewer lines remain neglected. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif works long hours and has extensive experience in provincial administration, but added that the federal government alone could not solve every local governance problem. The priority, he said, should be to strengthen the system rather than rely on individual interventions for issues such as sewer covers. Kamal urged all political parties to sit together and find a constitutional solution to the country’s administrative and governance challenges, saying meaningful reforms were needed to ensure public resources translated into better services and safer communities.
