DC, DPO receive central Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession in Gujrat

GUJRAT: Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi and District Police Officer Faisal Shehzad received the central procession marking Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) in Gujrat , as thousands of devotees participated in the religious gathering held amid security and administrative arrangements across the city.

The central procession began from Jamia Masjid Pir Wilayat Shah and moved through its designated route before reaching Faisal Gate, Circular Road and Chowk Pakistan, where it was scheduled to conclude.

The procession was led by Pir Syed Saeed Shah Gujrati, while a large number of devotees, religious scholars and residents participated in the celebrations.

Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi and DPO Faisal Shehzad received the procession outside the Municipal Corporation Gujrat office. The two senior officials exchanged Eid Milad-un-Nabi greetings with the organisers and participants and reviewed arrangements made for the smooth passage of the procession.

Assistant Commissioner Gujrat Abdul Qadeer Zarkoon, Chief Officer Municipal Committee Gujrat Zafar Abbas and other officers concerned were also present on the occasion.

The district administration and police had made arrangements to facilitate participants and ensure the procession continued peacefully along its designated route. Officials remained present at key points of the route to monitor the arrangements and maintain coordination among different departments.

Speaking on the occasion, Pir Syed Saeed Shah Gujrati appreciated the district administration and police for completing what he described as effective arrangements for the Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations.

He said the peaceful observance of religious occasions required cooperation between citizens, religious leaders, administration and law enforcement agencies.

Pir Saeed Shah also offered special prayers for peace and security in Gujrat district and across the country. He prayed for harmony, unity and stability in Pakistan and urged the faithful to draw guidance from the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The religious leader said Eid Milad-un-Nabi was an occasion for Muslims to renew their commitment to the principles of compassion, justice, tolerance and service to humanity as taught by the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

He prayed that Allah Almighty would grant everyone the strength to follow the Seerat-e-Tayyaba in their individual and collective lives.

The Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations continued across Gujrat, with religious processions, gatherings and other events being held in different parts of the district.

Participants in the central procession expressed devotion and affection for the Holy Prophet (PBUH), while religious slogans and naats echoed along the route.

The district administration, police and municipal authorities remained engaged in ensuring that the central procession proceeded according to the planned arrangements and concluded peacefully at its designated point.

    NAB clarifies Rs500 million jurisdiction threshold

    ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has internally clarified that inflation-based adjustments to the value of liabilities cannot be used retrospectively to bring older, lower-value corruption cases under its jurisdiction. The clarification follows the enforcement of the National Accountability (Amendment) Act 2026 on March 5. NAB has issued internal guidance for prosecutors and investigators to ensure a uniform legal position on the revised Rs500 million threshold. Under the amended law, an offence falls within NAB’s jurisdiction when it involves corruption or misconduct involving at least Rs500 million. The law also links the financial threshold to annual inflation indicators issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, with the adjustment taking effect from July 1, 2026. However, NAB’s internal interpretation distinguishes between the statutory jurisdictional threshold and the inflation-adjusted value of liabilities. The Rs500 million figure remains the basic test for determining jurisdiction. Inflation adjustment is applied only after the actual liability involved in a case has been finally determined. The guidance identifies three situations based on when the alleged offence occurred. For offences committed before July 2022, the original amount involved will be assessed according to the year in which the offence took place. No inflation adjustment will be applied retrospectively. If the final liability is Rs500 million or more, NAB will retain jurisdiction. If it is below Rs500 million, the case will fall outside NAB’s jurisdiction and may be transferred to the ordinary courts. For offences committed after July 2022, the Rs500 million threshold will initially determine NAB’s jurisdiction. Once an inquiry or investigation establishes the final amount involved, the relevant inflation index for the year in which the case reaches its final stage will be applied if the original liability is at least Rs500 million. The final reference will therefore contain both the original liability and its inflation-adjusted value. If the original liability is below Rs500 million, no inflation adjustment will be made and NAB’s jurisdiction will cease. The third category concerns continuing offences that began before July 2022 but continued after that date. Such cases will be treated in the same manner as offences committed after July 2022. The guidance further states that once the original liability has been finally established and the inflation-adjusted amount has been calculated, the resulting figure will be considered final. It will not be repeatedly revised on the basis of inflation increases in subsequent years. According to the internal legal position, linking the financial threshold to inflation was intended to keep the threshold realistic and relevant over time and prevent inflation from reducing its practical value. NAB has also clarified that the amendment was not intended to retrospectively expand the bureau’s jurisdiction or disadvantage accused persons. The 2026 amendments made another significant change by expanding provisions concerning the transfer of cases falling outside NAB’s jurisdiction. The relevant provision now extends to pending appeals as well, whereas the earlier framework was primarily limited to inquiries, investigations and trials.

A deputy superintendent of the jail said the prison authorities received the eight books from the Islamabad High Court. The court had directed the authorities to provide the books to Imran Khan. The jail administration subsequently handed all eight books over to the PTI founder. However, Khan returned four of the books to the jail authorities. He reportedly told officials that he had already read those books. The remaining books were kept with him after being delivered by the prison administration. The development comes after the Islamabad High Court issued directions regarding access to reading material for the former prime minister. The jail authorities confirmed that the court’s instructions regarding the books had been followed. Officials did not provide further details about the titles of the books that were delivered or returned. The provision of books gives Khan access to additional reading material during his time in prison.

    Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has advised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to begin efforts for changing the system by ensuring the implementation of the National Action Plan and improving performance within his own ministry. Reacting to Mohsin Naqvi’s recent remarks about weaknesses in the existing system, Khawaja Asif said he personally agrees to a large extent with the concerns raised by the interior minister. However, he emphasized that meaningful reforms should be pursued through constitutional and legal platforms, particularly Parliament and the cabinet. In a statement shared on social media, Khawaja Asif said that discussions about major reforms would produce better results if they were presented on parliamentary forums. He added that Parliament provides the appropriate platform for strengthening institutions and bringing sustainable changes through a constitutional process. The defence minister described Mohsin Naqvi as a powerful figure within the government and said that he should use his position to initiate practical reforms. He suggested that the process of system improvement should begin from the Interior Ministry and through the implementation of the National Action Plan. Khawaja Asif said that the evolution of the current system has been influenced by group and personal interests over several decades, and there is now a need to make institutions stronger and more independent. He stressed that reforms should not remain limited to statements but should be translated into practical measures. He further stated that important national issues should be discussed in constitutional forums such as Parliament and cabinet meetings. According to him, involving these institutions would strengthen the system, while discussions outside constitutional platforms may not have the same impact or acceptance. The defence minister also referred to the National Action Plan and said that out of the 13 points highlighted by the military leadership, the points related to the armed forces are being implemented through significant sacrifices. However, he claimed that several points under the responsibility of the Interior Ministry still require progress. Khawaja Asif urged Mohsin Naqvi to take the first step toward system reform by focusing on responsibilities already assigned to his ministry. He said that not only the business community but the entire nation would support genuine efforts aimed at improving governance and strengthening national institutions. He concluded that while discussions on reform are important, real change requires consistent action, institutional cooperation, and progress through established constitutional mechanisms.

    ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia’s new airline, Riyadh Air, is set to launch its long-awaited flight operations to Pakistan, with the first service scheduled for August 14, coinciding with Pakistan’s Independence Day. The airline will begin direct flights to Islamabad on Friday, marking a new step in air connectivity between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Services to Lahore are scheduled to start on August 18, according to details shared ahead of the launch. Under the initial schedule, Riyadh Air will operate seven flights every week to Islamabad and three weekly flights to Lahore, giving passengers more options for direct travel between the two countries. The launch is expected to strengthen links between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, which have extensive business, tourism and people-to-people connections. A large Pakistani community also lives and works in Saudi Arabia, making regular and convenient air services particularly important. Riyadh Air plans to operate Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on its Pakistan services. The wide-body aircraft is designed for long-haul routes and is expected to provide passengers with a modern travel experience. The airline’s entry into the Pakistani market is also being viewed as potentially beneficial for the country’s aviation and employment sectors. Sources said the arrival of the new carrier could create new job opportunities and support related businesses connected to aviation and passenger services. The launch comes as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its aviation sector as part of its broader efforts to strengthen international connectivity and develop Riyadh as a major global travel hub. For Pakistan, the new routes could provide another boost to direct connectivity with the Gulf region while increasing competition in the market. The timing of the launch has also added symbolic significance. Beginning operations on Pakistan’s Independence Day gives the airline’s arrival an additional diplomatic and commercial dimension, linking a major new aviation service with an important national occasion. The Islamabad route will become Riyadh Air’s first connection with Pakistan, followed shortly by Lahore. With 10 weekly flights planned across the two Pakistani cities, the new service is expected to offer greater flexibility to travellers while strengthening the growing aviation relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The launch will now put Riyadh Air’s ambitious international expansion plans into operation in one of South Asia’s most important aviation markets.

    Nawaz Sharif heading LHAR to give old Lahore a new…

    Lahore’s old city is going through a major change under a heritage revival plan, and the project has now been placed directly under the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-(N) leader Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. According to a recent notification issued by the Punjab government’s Local Government and Community Development Department, Nawaz Sharif has been made chairman of the newly formed board of the Lahore Heritage Area Revival project, also known as (LHAR) and patron-in-chief of the Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority (PWCHAA) Earlier, Nawaz Sharif only held the position of chief patron of the project. This meant he could give advice but had no formal powers. Under the new rules, the project’s legal structure has been changed, and a proper board has been formed. This board is now headed directly by the three-time former prime minister. The notification was published in the Punjab Gazette on July 23. It was issued under Section 8-A of the Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority Act 2012. The notification was approved by the governor of Punjab. With this change, the Lahore Heritage Area Revival Board has been formally established. The board now has full executive and administrative powers. Officials say this step was taken to remove bureaucratic delays in restoring the city’s historic fabric. The heritage revival areas cover Mughal, Sikh and colonial-era sites. Details of the ongoing work will be shared soon. Several government departments are working together on the project. These include the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency, known as TEPA, C&W and PWCHAA. TEPA is handling infrastructure work, such as building basements and parking. The PWCHAA is handling the restoration of old buildings. A major part of the plan is to turn old city streets into pedestrian zones. This includes the route from New Anarkali to Paan Gali in Lohari. It also includes Bora Bazaar, which has Bakshi Market inside it. Another walking route will run from Kacheri Chowk to Anarkali and then onward to Neela Gumbad. To name a few. Many buildings along these routes are old. All of them are being restored as part of the project. One of the biggest parts of the plan is a new public space called Neela Gumbad Square, where a two-floor underground parking garage is being built; it will become a place for families to walk and gather. Fountains and seating areas will be added. The Parks and Horticulture Authority will help plant trees and grass in the area. Other nearby heritage sites are also being restored. These include Ewing Hall and the first Bank of India building. The mosque near Neela Gumbad is also being renovated, while some roads nearby will be closed for traffic. LHAR spokesperson also responded to earlier criticism in media reports, where past reports only mentioned TEPA, even though other departments were also doing important work on the ground. The project now has a monitoring cell in place to track progress and check timely completion. The spokesperson further said that shopkeepers near Neela Gumbad were paid compensation a year before their shops were relocated. The officials had collected data on each shop’s daily business and income before deciding how much compensation to give; this was done so shopkeepers would not lose their livelihood during construction. With Nawaz Sharif now in the driving seat and his past records of completing mega projects on time, officials believe the project will move forward faster. The government says the goal is to restore Lahore’s historic buildings and streets while creating new public spaces for residents and visitors.
