15.91% spike exposes federal spending challenge

Controlling the rise in federal government administrative expenses has become a major challenge. Despite repeated claims of reducing expenditure and implementing austerity measures, the cost of running federal government affairs has increased by 15.91 per cent. The rise has raised concerns over the government’s efforts to control its administrative spending. The increase comes despite measures announced by the government to reduce unnecessary expenditure and promote financial discipline. According to the available details, spending on running government affairs has exceeded both the official target and the revised estimates. This means that actual administrative expenditure has remained higher than the levels projected by the government. The increase in spending also highlights the difficulties faced by the federal government in keeping its administrative costs under control. The government has been under pressure to reduce non-development expenditure and improve the efficiency of public spending. Authorities have introduced various austerity measures in an attempt to limit government expenditure. These measures were aimed at reducing unnecessary costs and ensuring better management of public resources. However, the latest increase indicates that controlling administrative spending remains a significant challenge. The higher-than-target expenditure could also put additional pressure on the government’s overall fiscal position. The development comes at a time when the federal government is seeking to maintain fiscal discipline and reduce unnecessary spending. Meghan McCain gives scathing response to trolls ca…

Meghan McCain is refusing to let online criticism define her. The former The View co-host recently fired back at social media trolls after they mocked her appearance, calling her “old” and “ugly.” Instead of ignoring the comments, McCain delivered a firm response, making it clear that she will not allow online bullies to dictate how she feels about herself. The television personality addressed the criticism on X (formerly Twitter), where she called out the growing culture of appearance-based insults on social media. McCain said she finds it disturbing that women continue to be judged so harshly for how they look, particularly as they get older. Rather than engaging in personal attacks, she used the moment to highlight the unrealistic beauty standards many women face online. (people.com) “I don’t care if strangers think I’m old or ugly,” McCain wrote, adding that she is proud of the life she has built. She emphasized that she has a loving family, a successful career, and priorities that go far beyond social media opinions. Her message quickly gained attention, with many supporters praising her confidence and willingness to speak openly about online harassment. (people.com) McCain has long been known for expressing her opinions without hesitation. During her years on The View, she frequently made headlines for passionate political debates and outspoken commentary. (people.com) The incident has also sparked broader discussions about online bullying, especially toward women in the public eye. Celebrities often face criticism over their appearance, regardless of age or accomplishments. Many fans argued that comments focusing on physical appearance contribute to harmful beauty standards and discourage healthy conversations online. McCain’s supporters applauded her for challenging those attitudes instead of remaining silent. (today.com) In recent years, McCain has frequently spoken about balancing her professional life with motherhood and family responsibilities. She has said that becoming a parent has changed her perspective, making her less concerned about public approval and more focused on what truly matters. That outlook was evident in her latest response, as she reminded critics that confidence comes from personal fulfillment rather than strangers’ opinions on the internet. (people.com) Although online criticism remains a reality for many public figures, McCain’s response has resonated with people who believe social media should encourage respectful discussion instead of personal attacks. By confronting the insults directly, she transformed a negative experience into a wider conversation about self-confidence, kindness, and the importance of refusing to let anonymous critics define one’s worth. FinMin Aurangzeb seeks US backing for global marke…

Pakistan has sought stronger support from the United States to improve its access to international capital markets, strengthen foreign exchange reserves and enhance its sovereign credit ratings as part of its broader strategy to accelerate economic growth and attract foreign investment. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb discussed these priorities during a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington. The meeting focused on Pakistan’s economic progress, financial reforms and opportunities to deepen economic cooperation between the two countries. During the talks, Aurangzeb briefed the US treasury secretary on Pakistan’s improving economic outlook. He said the country has successfully moved beyond the phase of macroeconomic stabilization and is now entering a period focused on sustainable, export-led growth. He noted that ongoing structural reforms and prudent fiscal management have helped improve economic stability and restore investor confidence. The finance minister also highlighted the challenges posed by regional geopolitical tensions. He said instability in the region has affected Pakistan’s economy and continues to create uncertainty for trade, investment and financial markets. He emphasized that stronger international cooperation would help Pakistan maintain economic stability despite these external challenges. Aurangzeb requested greater US support to help Pakistan improve access to international capital markets. He said easier access to global financing would strengthen the country’s financial position, increase foreign exchange reserves and improve sovereign credit ratings, making Pakistan more attractive to international investors. The two sides also discussed ways to expand bilateral economic cooperation. They reviewed opportunities to increase US investment in Pakistan and explored prospects for advancing strategic development and investment projects that could strengthen economic ties between the two countries. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing economic relations, promoting investment and supporting initiatives aimed at expanding trade and long-term financial cooperation. Separately, Aurangzeb held a virtual meeting from Washington with senior representatives of international banking consortia participating in Pakistan’s Global Medium-Term Note Programme and International Sukuk Programme. The meeting marked the beginning of a strategic partnership with selected international financial institutions that will assist Pakistan in raising funds from global capital markets through both conventional bonds and Islamic financing instruments. The banking consortia have been appointed for a three-year period and will support future sovereign bond and Sukuk issuances whenever the government decides to enter international financial markets in line with its financing strategy. Officials said Pakistan’s return to international capital markets has become more feasible due to significant improvements in the country’s macroeconomic environment. Continued fiscal discipline, stronger external financial buffers, better debt management and ongoing structural reforms have improved investor confidence and strengthened Pakistan’s economic credibility. Government officials believe these improvements have also contributed to better market sentiment, with international investors showing growing confidence in Pakistan’s economic reforms and long-term growth prospects.

PAC flags Rs19bn BISP payment irregularities

A subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has raised concerns over financial irregularities in the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) after audit officials revealed that more than Rs19 billion was paid outside the beneficiaries’ respective provinces or districts. The meeting was chaired by subcommittee convener Moeen Aamir Pirzada. Members reviewed a series of audit objections related to BISP covering the financial years from 2010-11 to 2022-23. During the briefing, audit officials informed the committee that payments worth over Rs19 billion had been made in locations different from the beneficiaries’ registered districts or provinces. The audit team said the transactions required further scrutiny to determine whether they resulted from administrative weaknesses, verification gaps or possible misuse of the programme. Committee members expressed concern over the findings and stressed the need for stronger monitoring and accountability in the country’s largest social welfare programme. They said public funds intended for deserving families must be distributed through a transparent and well-monitored system. The subcommittee examined the audit observations in detail and sought explanations from the relevant BISP officials regarding the irregular payments. Officials were asked to clarify how such payments were processed and whether adequate checks were in place to prevent similar cases. The committee also discussed measures to improve the verification process, strengthen oversight and ensure that future payments are made only to eligible beneficiaries through proper channels. Members emphasized that any financial irregularities should be investigated thoroughly and those responsible should be held accountable.
