Egypt may join Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi defence pact

Egypt could become the next country to join the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said.

Fidan said the defence pact is broadly comparable to NATO’s mutual defence principle. He stressed that the agreement is not aimed at Iran or any other country.

According to the Turkish foreign minister, the pact is designed to provide a framework for the three countries to support each other’s security.

He said the member states would consult each other in the event of an attack. They would then determine the nature and level of assistance required.

Fidan said Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants the alliance to expand beyond its three founding members. Egypt is among the countries being considered for possible membership.

He said some technical issues would need to be resolved before Egypt could join the arrangement.

Fidan explained that the alliance would begin with Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. He said the members intended to take gradual but practical steps to build the new security framework.

A ministerial committee similar to structures used within NATO is also expected to be established. The alliance will also have a general secretariat based in Saudi Arabia.

Further operational details are expected to be discussed during the first meeting of the proposed committee.

Fidan said the agreement was the result of negotiations that had continued for more than two years. He also stressed that the new arrangement would not replace existing military alliances.

The Turkish minister said the pact was intended to strengthen regional cooperation. He said it could eventually bring more countries together under a common security framework.

Meanwhile, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation welcomed the signing of the agreement.

OIC Secretary General Hissein Brahim Taha expressed strong support for the pact. He described it as an important strategic development for regional and international cooperation.

Taha said the agreement could contribute to security and stability across the region and the wider Muslim world.

He also praised the leadership of Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia. He said their efforts had resulted in what he described as a historic agreement.

The pact was signed on Friday during a trilateral summit in Makkah. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the agreement at Al-Safa Palace.

Under the agreement, the three countries have committed to strengthening defence cooperation and collective security. The pact also seeks to promote peace, stability and prosperity.

Officials said the agreement is not directed against any country. They said it is based on a shared approach to security and burden-sharing.

The agreement also establishes a collective deterrence principle. An armed attack against any one of the three member states will be treated as an attack against all three.

Spider-Man tops Endgame box office record

Avengers directors Joe and Anthony Russo have congratulated the team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day after the film surpassed one of Avengers: Endgame’s biggest domestic box office records. The filmmakers shared a public message on social media, praising the cast and crew after the latest Spider-Man film crossed the $1 billion mark globally and achieved the highest domestic opening weekend in box office history, overtaking the long-standing record previously held by Avengers: Endgame. In their message, the Russo brothers congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, lead actors Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, along with producers and the entire production team. They described the achievement as a historic moment and declared that “the gauntlet has been passed,” referencing Marvel’s iconic Infinity Gauntlet. Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken several records set by Endgame, it has not yet become the fastest film to earn $1 billion worldwide, leaving that milestone intact. Industry observers believe the competition could intensify later this year when Marvel releases Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers. The highly anticipated superhero film is expected to arrive in cinemas in December and is already being viewed as a potential record-breaking blockbuster. The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day has further strengthened the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with strong audience turnout and impressive global ticket sales continuing to drive its performance at the box office.

Karachi roads blocked as JI protests fuel levy

Traffic was disrupted across several major parts of Karachi on Friday as Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) workers staged sit-ins against the federal petroleum levy. The protests were part of a nationwide campaign announced by the party. JI had said it would hold demonstrations at hundreds of locations across the country by blocking major roads. Karachi traffic police issued an advisory warning motorists about congestion, temporary diversions and partial road closures in several areas. Major routes affected included areas around Mazar-i-Quaid, Numaish Chowrangi, Saddar, Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-i-Pakistan, UP Mor, Power House Chowrangi, Defence Housing Authority, Sea View, Shahrah-i-Orangi, Hub River Road, Super Highway and National Highway. The traffic police advised citizens to avoid the protest-hit areas where possible and use alternative routes. Commuters were also asked to allow additional time for their journeys. According to updates shared by JI Karachi, protesters blocked the road connecting Sharea Faisal with Natha Khan. The Super Highway and Hub River Road were also affected. Another road connecting the Sharea Faisal Nursery Bus Stop with the airport was reportedly blocked as protesters gathered at the designated locations. The demonstrations prompted criticism from the Sindh government. Provincial government spokesperson Sadia Javed said the petroleum levy was a federal issue and questioned why Karachi’s residents were facing difficulties because of the protest. She accused the JI of using the demonstrations for political gains instead of addressing public issues through relevant constitutional forums. Javed said road blockades were affecting the daily lives of millions of Karachi residents and raised concerns about the movement of ambulances and patients during the disruptions. She urged the party to raise its objections in Parliament and other relevant forums rather than blocking roads. The government spokesperson also warned protesters against damaging public property or taking the law into their own hands. The demonstrations were not limited to Karachi. JI workers also gathered in Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta and Peshawar as part of the nationwide campaign. In Islamabad, protesters reportedly blocked Srinagar Highway near Golra Mor while attempting to march towards Chungi 26. Several locations across Sindh also witnessed demonstrations, including Thatta, Matiari, Tando Allahyar and Shikarpur.

Rome to host US-mediated Israel-Lebanon negotiations on southern pilot zones

Technical delegations from Israel and Lebanon will assemble in Rome from August 4 to 6 for a fresh round of United States-brokered talks designed to advance the implementation of their bilateral framework agreement. First disclosed by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and subsequently confirmed by the US State Department, the upcoming dialogue will address the expansion of designated pilot zones in southern Lebanon alongside broader border resolutions and long-term peace objectives. The core terms of the underlying framework deal, established after conflict flared between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in March, require a cessation of hostilities, the disarming of Hezbollah, the national deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces, and a structured, phased withdrawal of Israeli forces commencing from two initial pilot areas. Negotiators aim to leverage early operational data from these initial zones to refine the broader security rollout and facilitate a progressive expansion of government control throughout the border region. The upcoming diplomatic round occurs amidst friction on the ground, with the Lebanese military recently condemning persistent Israeli artillery shelling and strikes in southern territory, cautioning that continued operations directly impede the full deployment of state troops outlined in the agreement.

While he has a large following, his outspoken personality and extravagant lifestyle have also made him a polarizing figure, with some fans strongly supporting him while others criticize his approach. In a recent interview with 24 Digital, Rajab Butt opened up about his latest controversies, public disagreements and the reasons behind his highly visible lifestyle. During the conversation, the YouTuber addressed a topic that has repeatedly sparked discussion online: his habit of openly displaying his wealth. He has also previously claimed that he has achieved billionaire status through his YouTube career and various business ventures. His claims and lifestyle have generated considerable discussion among social media users, with many questioning why he chooses to make so much of his financial success public. Explaining his perspective, Rajab Butt said that showing his wealth is closely connected to the nature of his work as a content creator. According to him, if he purchases something expensive, it naturally becomes part of the content he creates for his audience. He gave the example of buying a car worth Rs 5 crore, saying that if he spends such a huge amount on a vehicle, he would make a vlog about it rather than keeping the purchase completely private. For him, such moments are not simply personal experiences but also opportunities to create content and keep his viewers interested. Rajab further pointed out that content creators have increasingly turned everyday occasions into material for their videos. He noted that YouTubers can create content even from events such as birthday celebrations, suggesting that almost every aspect of a creator’s lifestyle can become part of their online presence. He explained that he follows the same approach. Since his career depends on producing engaging videos, he believes he has to make his content interesting enough to hold the audience’s attention. Sharing expensive purchases, cars and other aspects of his lifestyle is therefore part of the entertainment value he offers to his viewers. His comments provide an insight into how Rajab Butt views the relationship between his personal life and his career. Rather than treating his wealth as something that should always remain private, he considers it a source of content that can help attract viewers and generate interest. For Rajab Butt, displaying his wealth is ultimately connected to the demands of being a modern YouTuber. As social media continues to blur the line between private life and entertainment, he appears comfortable turning major personal milestones, purchases and lifestyle choices into content for his audience.

Zendaya praises Tom Holland’s ability to set healthy boundaries

Hollywood actress Zendaya has revealed the one quality she most admires about her husband, Tom Holland, saying she wishes she could learn from his ability to stand up for himself and set clear personal boundaries. The actress made the comments during the promotional tour for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where the couple reflected on their relationship and working together. Speaking during the interview, the Dune star explained that Holland’s greatest strength has nothing to do with his acting career or public image. Instead, she said she is impressed by the way he consistently prioritises respect and kindness while also knowing when to draw the line. Beginning her answer, Zendaya said, “Something I am always impressed with Tom about, which I feel like I want to inherit more of, but he’s very…” Before she could finish, Holland jokingly interrupted, saying, “Awesome? Legendary? Talented?” His playful response prompted laughter before Zendaya explained what she really meant. She continued, “You’re a big stickler for respect and kindness. Not to say that I’m not doing that, but you just make sure that is in the front.” Zendaya went on to explain that Holland is much better than she is at setting firm boundaries whenever someone crosses the line. “And then if that line is crossed, I think sometimes he’s better at drawing boundaries and making things clear. And I’m a little bit more like, okay, guys, it’s all right, everything’s all right.” Praising her husband further, the actress added, “You’re good at being like, no, no, this is, we’re not doing this. You’re good at setting the boundaries when they need to be set. Really clearly, really strong.” Zendaya also highlighted Holland’s protective nature, saying it is one of the qualities she values most in him. “So I like that you have, you know what you feel is right for yourself, and you do it, and for others you’re very protective in that way,” she said. Clearly touched by his wife’s heartfelt praise, Holland responded simply, “Thank you. I appreciate that.” According to the report, Zendaya believes Holland has a natural ability to remain calm while confidently standing his ground whenever necessary. She said his willingness to protect both himself and the people he cares about is something she deeply admires. One example of that protective instinct took place on 24 October 2024 in New York City, when the couple was leaving an event at the Nine Orchard Hotel. As photographers and fans crowded around Zendaya, she became separated from Holland in the middle of the large group. Witnesses recalled that Holland quickly made his way through the crowd and asked people to give his wife space. During the incident, he was heard saying, “No, no, no, give her some room,” before taking Zendaya’s hand and guiding her safely away from the crowd. The interview has been warmly received by fans, who praised the couple’s openness and mutual respect. Many also applauded Zendaya for highlighting Holland’s character rather than his fame, describing their conversation as another example of the supportive relationship the two stars have continued to display both on and off screen.
