European wildfire crisis claims three firefighters in Greece amidst scorching heatwaves

Three Greek firefighters have lost their lives whilst tackling aggressive wildfires on the island of Crete and the southern mainland, as an unprecedented surge of summer heatwaves continues to fuel devastating blazes across southern Europe.

The relentless arc of fires, stretching from the Atlantic coast to the eastern Mediterranean, has forced over three hundred and thirty thousand people to evacuate their homes and hotels. Firefighting services across the continent remain pushed to their absolute limits as high temperatures, prolonged drought, and powerful wind gusts exacerbate the risk of fresh outbreaks and reignite previously stabilised zones.

In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the national government had taken over disaster management after a massive wildfire near Madrid reached an unprecedented operational emergency level before ground crews managed to stabilise its perimeter.

Meanwhile, French emergency services in the Gironde region continue to battle historical forest fires that have scorched over forty-four thousand hectares of land and injured more than a hundred firefighters.

As the European Union coordinates extensive international aid, deploying aircraft, specialised vehicles, and emergency personnel from member states including Poland, Romania, and Portugal, climate experts and EU officials warn that rising global temperatures are making European fire seasons longer, hotter, and increasingly difficult to contain.

Rubio and Bessent stayed aboard decoy jet as Trump…

Two members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet remained aboard a decoy aircraft after Trump quietly departed the plane and boarded a different flight while in Turkey last month, according to a US television network report. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stayed on what was widely believed to be Air Force One and did not join the alternate flight arranged for Trump due to security concerns tied to Iran. Trump boarded Air Force One on July 8 alongside both officials as well as members of the traveling press before slipping away via a catering truck, which transported him discreetly to a separate military aircraft. Because the designation “Air Force One” applies to whichever plane the president occupies, the original aircraft retained the call sign even after Trump had already left it, effectively turning it into the decoy. According to the report, Rubio and Bessent remained on the first aircraft in order to preserve the presidential line of succession in case anything happened to Trump during the flight. Under that line of succession, Vice President JD Vance would assume power if the president died or became incapacitated, followed by the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. The Secretary of State ranks next in the order, followed by the Treasury Secretary. Others who stayed aboard the original aircraft designated as Air Force One included White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and White House communications director Steven Cheung. The second aircraft that carried Trump out of Ankara also included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to separate US media reports. Speaking to reporters Monday night, Trump said the decision to carry out the plane switch came from the US military and the Secret Service, who he said wanted him to travel on a different aircraft. He did not provide specifics about the nature of the security threat, saying only that he regularly receives numerous threats and that any consequential president faces the same. A request for comment sent to the White House had not been answered as of publication.

Nicholas Hoult joins HBO’s Harry Potter as Gilderoy Lockhart

Nicholas Hoult is stepping into the magical world of Hogwarts, taking on the role of the charming but self-obsessed Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The casting news was confirmed by HBO Max on Tuesday, August 11, adding another high-profile name to the growing ensemble of the highly anticipated reboot. Hoult will portray the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in the show’s second season, succeeding Kenneth Branagh, who played the character in the original 2002 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Gilderoy Lockhart is introduced in the second Harry Potter story as a celebrated wizard who joins Hogwarts as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Known for his confidence, charm and flamboyant personality, Lockhart has gained fame for writing books about his supposed heroic achievements. However, his public image is far more impressive than his actual abilities. Throughout the story, his exaggerated claims and lack of competence become increasingly apparent, making him one of the more memorable and comedic characters in the Harry Potter universe. Hoult’s addition further strengthens the star-studded cast of HBO’s new adaptation. The series features John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. The young stars leading the new generation of Hogwarts students include Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Their casting has generated significant interest as audiences prepare to see the beloved story retold for television. Production on the series began in July 2025, with the first season scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25. The adaptation is expected to explore J.K. Rowling’s original books in greater detail than the films, allowing more room for characters, storylines and events that were previously condensed or omitted. The Harry Potter franchise, however, continues to face controversy because of Rowling’s public comments about transgender issues. The author has faced criticism since 2020 over remarks that many viewed as transphobic. Rowling has rejected that characterization and has maintained that her views are focused on women’s rights. Despite the controversy surrounding the author, Rowling remains involved with the television adaptation as an executive producer. For Hoult, the Harry Potter role comes after another major franchise appearance. The actor recently portrayed Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman and is expected to return as the iconic villain in the upcoming sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release in 2027. Hoult is also set to appear in How to Rob a Bank, which is slated for release on November 13, adding another major project to his increasingly busy film and television career.

Netanyahu accuses New York Mayor Mamdani of ‘fomenting hate’ and rejects ICC war crimes charges

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticised New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of “fomenting hate” and attempting to divide the city’s population. The sharp exchange follows comments by Mamdani asserting that Netanyahu is unwelcome in New York City due to ongoing International Criminal Court (ICC) war crimes charges linked to the war in Gaza, and urging federal authorities to execute the court’s arrest warrant when the prime minister attends the United Nations General Assembly in September. Appearing on Fox News Channel, Netanyahu dismissed the ICC charges as “bogus” and claimed the allegations were designed to divert attention from internal misconduct within the prosecutor’s office. He expressed concern over eroding bipartisan support for Israel within the United States, warning that political rhetoric from progressive Democrats risks fueling rising anti-Semitism in major American cities. Despite the mayor’s stance, US President Donald Trump has publicly assured Netanyahu that he will face no risk of arrest during his visits to the United States.

SBP holds interest rate at 11.5pc amid growth conc…

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has kept its policy rate unchanged at 11.5 per cent, maintaining the existing monetary policy stance amid concerns over economic growth. The decision was announced on Monday by SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed following a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The central bank’s decision was largely expected by financial market analysts. Most experts had predicted that the SBP would maintain the current rate to support macroeconomic stability while monitoring economic conditions. Market surveys conducted by brokerage firms showed that more than 90 per cent of respondents expected the policy rate to remain unchanged. Only a small number of analysts had anticipated a possible increase. The decision comes as Pakistan continues to balance economic stability with the need to encourage business activity and investment. Higher interest rates can help control inflation and support financial stability, but they can also increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. The SBP had reduced its policy rate by 50 basis points to 10.5pc in December 2025. It later raised the rate by 100 basis points to 11.5pc in April 2026. Since then, the central bank has maintained the rate at 11.5pc. Business groups have continued to call for a significant reduction in borrowing costs. They argue that lower interest rates could help businesses expand operations, increase investment and support economic activity. However, the central bank has opted for a cautious approach. Policymakers appear focused on maintaining overall economic stability while assessing inflation, growth and other financial indicators.

Punjab Governor ends 19-year UAF research officers…

FAISALABAD: In a landmark decision expected to reshape the service structure of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), Punjab Governor and UAF Chancellor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has ordered the upgradation of the post of Research Officer with retrospective effect from April 25, 2007, bringing an end to what many describe as nearly two decades of discrimination against the university’s research cadre. The decision came after the Chancellor accepted a representation filed by Muzaffar Hussain Salik, a Research Officer at the Office of University Books and Magazines (OUBM). Besides approving the upgradation, the Chancellor declared the post of Research Officer a “Teacher of the University,” making its holders eligible for all related service, financial, seniority and pensionary benefits in accordance with the law. The dispute dates back to the implementation of the UAF Amended Service Statutes, 2007, introduced after the federal government’s policy to upgrade university teachers and teaching-equivalent positions with the concurrence of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). While several teaching and equivalent posts received the approved benefits, Research Officers and Senior Research Officers were allegedly left out despite performing comparable academic and research responsibilities. According to the representation, the exclusion created a longstanding disparity, depriving the affected employees of promotions, financial benefits, and equal treatment under the approved statutory framework. It argued that the selective implementation of the service statutes resulted in years of professional and financial disadvantage for members of the research cadre. After reviewing the legal and administrative record, the Chancellor ruled that the benefit of upgradation should be extended to Research Officers from the same effective date as Lecturers — April 25, 2007. The order effectively places the research cadre on par with other teaching-equivalent positions that had already been upgraded under the 2007 amendments. University officials and academic observers believe the decision will benefit around 66 Research Officers, Senior Research Officers and other teaching-equivalent employees, providing them with long-awaited financial relief, revised seniority, pensionary benefits and formal recognition within the university’s teaching community. The ruling has been widely welcomed by researchers, academics and legal experts, who describe it as one of the most significant service-related decisions in UAF’s recent history. They say the order reinforces the principles of equality, transparency and uniform implementation of statutory rights while setting an important precedent for public sector universities across Pakistan. For petitioner Muzaffar Hussain Salik, the decision marks the successful conclusion of a long legal and constitutional struggle. Beneficiaries have hailed the ruling as a collective victory for justice, merit and the rule of law, expressing hope that similar disparities in higher education institutions will now be addressed through fair and consistent implementation of service statutes.

Kaia Gerber, Lewis Pullman’s romance reaches maj…

Kaia Gerber and Lewis Pullman are quietly taking their romance to the next level. While the couple has largely stayed out of the spotlight, new reports suggest their relationship has reached a significant milestone, with those closest to them believing it has become more serious than ever.  According to an insider, Gerber and Pullman are “so in love,” and their connection has only deepened since they first sparked dating rumors in early 2025. Although they prefer to keep their relationship private, the source said the romance has been genuine from the very beginning, with both stars choosing to focus on building a strong foundation away from constant public attention.  One of the biggest signs of how serious the relationship has become is the warm welcome Pullman has reportedly received from Gerber’s family. The insider revealed that Kaia’s parents, supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, already see the actor as “part of the family.” Their approval reflects how naturally Pullman has fit into Kaia’s personal life and family circle.  Despite both having demanding careers, the pair are said to make their relationship a priority. Friends describe them as grounded and supportive of one another, adding that they enjoy spending quality time with family rather than chasing the Hollywood spotlight. Their low-key approach has helped the romance flourish without unnecessary pressure.  Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford, has continued balancing a successful modeling career with growing acting opportunities. Pullman, meanwhile, has become one of Hollywood’s rising stars thanks to acclaimed performances and several high-profile projects. Even with busy schedules, sources say the couple has found a healthy balance between work and their personal lives.  The couple has also made a handful of public appearances together over the past year, including outings at the Venice Film Festival and the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party. While they rarely discuss their romance in interviews, their public moments have shown a comfortable and affectionate relationship that continues to grow stronger.  According to those close to the pair, there has never been any rush to define the relationship publicly. Instead, Gerber and Pullman have focused on getting to know each other away from the cameras, allowing their bond to develop naturally. That patient approach is said to be one of the reasons their romance has remained so stable.  While neither Kaia Gerber nor Lewis Pullman has commented publicly on the latest reports, insiders believe their relationship is stronger than ever. With family support, shared values and a commitment to keeping their love life private, the couple appears to have found a balance that is rare in Hollywood—proving that sometimes the strongest romances are the ones lived quietly.
