President orders stronger monsoon preparedness nat…

President Asif Ali Zardari has directed all federal, provincial, and local authorities to strengthen emergency preparedness and speed up rescue and relief operations as heavy monsoon rains continue to affect several parts of Pakistan.

The president issued the instructions as the country enters a critical phase of the monsoon season. Weather experts have warned that continued rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods, river flooding, urban flooding, landslides, cloudbursts, and glacial lake outburst floods in vulnerable regions.

Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction caused by recent rains, President Zardari extended his condolences to the affected families. He also expressed concern over the damage to homes, roads, public infrastructure, agricultural land, and other property caused by the ongoing severe weather.

The president instructed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), district administrations, and other relevant agencies to maintain close coordination throughout the emergency. He said all institutions should work together to ensure a timely and effective response to any weather-related incident.

He directed authorities to issue early weather warnings without delay and ensure that information reaches people living in high-risk areas. He stressed that advance warnings can help communities take precautionary measures and reduce the loss of lives and property.

President Zardari also ordered continuous monitoring of rainfall, river flows, reservoirs, and water levels, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where heavy rains have increased the possibility of flash floods and landslides. He instructed authorities in downstream districts to complete all necessary preparations for possible flooding.

The president further directed emergency agencies to deploy rescue teams, heavy machinery, medical staff, and relief supplies in vulnerable areas before conditions worsen. He also called for special measures to protect tourists, travellers, and local residents in mountainous regions where landslides, flash floods, and glacial lake outburst floods pose serious risks.

He emphasised that all government departments must remain on high alert and respond immediately wherever human lives, homes, or critical infrastructure are threatened. He said protecting citizens should remain the highest priority during the ongoing monsoon season.

President Zardari also appealed to the public to follow official weather advisories and avoid unnecessary travel to areas facing heavy rainfall or flood warnings. He urged citizens to cooperate with rescue teams and local authorities during emergency operations.

The president appreciated the efforts of rescue workers, emergency personnel, volunteers, and officials who continue to assist affected communities despite difficult weather conditions. He also prayed for the safety of people across the country.

The ongoing monsoon spell has caused widespread destruction in several provinces. At least 37 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while many others have been injured. Heavy rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides, damaging houses, roads, bridges, crops, livestock, and public infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab.

Selena Gomez reportedly moves on from Justin Biebe…

Selena Gomez is reportedly ready to leave the past behind as she focuses on building a future with her fiancé, music producer Benny Blanco. According to recent entertainment reports, the singer and actress has grown tired of ongoing speculation linking her to former boyfriend Justin Bieber and his wife, Hailey Bieber, and is choosing instead to focus on the next chapter of her life. Sources cited by entertainment outlets claim Gomez has become exhausted by constant online discussions and alleged subtle social media jabs involving the Biebers. While rumors continue to circulate among fans, insiders reportedly say Gomez has no interest in revisiting old drama and is prioritizing her happiness and relationship with Blanco. The Only Murders in the Building star and Blanco confirmed their relationship in late 2023 before announcing their engagement in December 2024. Since then, the couple have frequently appeared together at public events and shared glimpses of their life on social media, with fans praising their supportive and affectionate relationship. According to reports, Gomez is embracing this new phase with optimism. Sources say she and Blanco have discussed their long-term future together, including marriage and the possibility of starting a family. While neither has publicly confirmed specific timelines for having children, insiders claim the couple are excited about what lies ahead and are committed to building a life together. Meanwhile, Gomez is said to be distancing herself from years of speculation surrounding her past relationship with Justin Bieber. The former couple’s on-and-off romance dominated headlines for years, and even after Bieber married Hailey Bieber in 2018, comparisons and fan theories have continued to surface online. Entertainment insiders reportedly believe Gomez has reached a point where she no longer wants her personal life to be defined by her past. Instead, she is concentrating on her relationship with Blanco, her successful beauty brand Rare Beauty, her acting career, and upcoming music projects. Those close to the singer reportedly describe her current relationship as stable, healthy, and supportive. Blanco has often spoken publicly about his admiration for Gomez, while the couple regularly celebrate one another’s achievements, earning praise from fans for their genuine connection. Although social media speculation occasionally resurfaces, reports suggest Gomez is choosing not to engage with the rumors. Instead, she is focusing her energy on the people and projects that bring her joy. While the claims about ongoing tensions and subtle online references remain unconfirmed by Gomez, Justin Bieber, or Hailey Bieber, recent reports suggest the singer is determined to move forward. As she prepares for married life with Benny Blanco, Gomez appears focused on the future rather than the headlines, embracing a new chapter centered on love, personal growth, and the possibility of starting a family.

Protests erupt in Bologna after man’s death during police restraint

Thousands of people marched through the Italian city of Bologna after the death of a Moroccan born man who died while being restrained by police, prompting a criminal investigation and violent clashes that left dozens of officers injured. The protests were held in memory of Abderrahim Fakir, whose death on Sunday has sparked widespread public anger and renewed debate over police conduct in Italy. Demonstrators gathered to demand justice before a smaller group broke away from the main rally and clashed with riot police late into the night. Authorities said 64 police officers were injured during the unrest as protesters threw objects, confronted security forces and set two vehicles on fire. Police eventually brought the situation under control. The incident that led to the demonstrations began after officers responded to reports of a man behaving erratically in Bologna’s Pilastro neighbourhood. According to police, Fakir was seen kicking garage doors before officers attempted to calm him. They later used pepper spray during the confrontation. A video widely shared by Italian media shows two police officers holding Fakir face down on the ground while another man restrains his legs. Emergency medical workers are also visible nearby. In the footage, Fakir can be heard asking the officers to stop before he gradually stops moving. After he became unresponsive, officers handcuffed him and attempted to wake him before medical staff intervened. Prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation involving the police officers and emergency workers who were present at the scene. The inquiry will examine whether the restraint methods or medical response contributed to Fakir’s death. Several witnesses told local media that although Fakir appeared distressed, he was unarmed and did not pose a threat to anyone nearby. His sister, Khadija Fakir, called for a full investigation and said the family wanted answers about how he died while in police custody. Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore also expressed shock after watching the video and organised Monday’s public demonstration in support of Fakir’s family. During the rally, Fakir’s niece addressed the crowd, describing her uncle as a caring and respected member of the community. She said he deserved compassion, dignity and help rather than the outcome that followed. Although the main demonstration remained peaceful, officials said a small number of protesters later turned violent. Mayor Lepore condemned the unrest while drawing a distinction between peaceful demonstrators and those who resorted to violence. The police union defended the officers’ actions and argued that the available video showed they had acted appropriately under difficult circumstances. Union representatives said the officers immediately handed over body camera footage to investigators and insisted the use of force was justified because officers faced resistance during the incident. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a thorough investigation into Fakir’s death while strongly condemning the violence that followed. She said determining the truth about the incident was essential but stressed that attacks on law enforcement could not be justified. Fakir’s death has drawn comparisons with previous high profile cases involving deaths in police custody in Italy. Opposition politicians have criticised the government’s strong support for police, while human rights advocates say the investigation must establish whether officers followed proper procedures during the arrest. The case has intensified public discussion over policing practices and accountability across the country.

Gold prices fall in global and Pakistan markets as…

In the international bullion market, the price of gold fell by $10 per ounce, bringing it down to $4,040 per ounce. The decline in global prices was mirrored in Pakistan’s local bullion market, where the price of 24-karat gold dropped by Rs. 1,000 per tola, settling at Rs. 426,436. Similarly, the price of 10 grams of 24-karat gold in the domestic market decreased by Rs. 857, reaching Rs. 365,600. The latest adjustment follows fluctuations in global bullion markets, where investor sentiment and international economic developments continue to influence precious metal prices. While gold registered a decline, silver prices moved in the opposite direction. In the international market, silver gained 68 cents per ounce, pushing its price to $58.12 per ounce. The increase in global silver prices was also reflected in Pakistan’s local market. The price of silver per tola rose by Rs. 68, reaching Rs. 6,291, while the price of 10 grams of silver increased by Rs. 58 to Rs. 5,393. Market analysts say fluctuations in precious metal prices are primarily driven by movements in international bullion markets, changes in investor demand, currency trends, and expectations regarding global economic conditions. Gold often experiences price volatility as investors respond to inflation data, interest rate expectations, and geopolitical developments, while silver prices are influenced by both investment demand and industrial consumption. Jewellers and bullion traders in Pakistan closely monitor international price movements, as domestic gold and silver rates are largely determined by global market trends along with the exchange rate of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. The latest decline in gold prices may provide some relief for buyers planning jewellery purchases or investment in physical gold. However, traders caution that bullion prices remain highly volatile, and future movements will depend on developments in the global economy and financial markets. With gold easing and silver continuing to strengthen, investors are expected to keep a close watch on international market trends before making further investment decisions in precious metals.

Lahore police station assault case sparks mass sus…

Lahore: A shocking alleged sexual assault inside Lahore’s Ghaziabad Police Station has triggered the suspension of the entire station staff, including the Station House Officer (SHO), as authorities investigate the incident. According to police officials, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Imran allegedly brought a young woman to the police station on the pretext of questioning her. A sentry on gate duty reportedly asked about the woman, and the ASI claimed she was a suspect being taken in for investigation. He then allegedly took her into an investigation room, where the assault is said to have occurred. Police said the officer later dropped the woman back home. Her family had gone to the police station to report her missing but were informed during the process that she had already returned. Following the allegations, the accused ASI was arrested, while the investigation in-charge was also suspended. The incident prompted the suspension of all 78 personnel posted at Ghaziabad Police Station, including the SHO. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said that although different police units operate within a station, the SHO is ultimately responsible for maintaining discipline and oversight. He added that all activities taking place inside the station should fall under the SHO’s knowledge and supervision. Police also confirmed that the alleged victim is mentally vulnerable, and an investigation into the case is underway.

    SBP reserves climb to $17.26bn

Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) posted a slight increase during the week ending July 17. However, the country’s overall liquid reserves recorded a small decline as commercial banks’ holdings decreased. According to the latest figures released by the central bank, SBP’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $33 million, taking the total to $17.26 billion. The increase reflects a gradual improvement in the country’s external financial position. Despite the rise in the central bank’s reserves, Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves slipped by $5.9 million to $22.67 billion. The decline was caused by a fall in the reserves held by commercial banks. Commercial banks’ net foreign exchange reserves dropped by $38.7 million, bringing their total holdings to $5.41 billion. As a result, Pakistan’s total foreign reserves now provide import cover for nearly 2.5 months, highlighting the need for further improvement in external inflows. The Pakistani rupee remained stable in the interbank market. It closed at Rs277.90 against the US dollar, compared with Rs277.91 a day earlier. The slight gain came as the US dollar also remained mostly steady in global markets despite continued geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan declined sharply after international bullion prices fell by more than two percent. The price of 24-karat gold per tola dropped by Rs1,800 to Rs432,036. The price of 10 grams of gold fell by Rs1,543 to Rs370,401. Silver prices also moved lower, with the per tola rate declining by Rs33 to Rs6,370. The decline followed a strong rally in the previous trading session when gold prices had increased significantly in the domestic market. Internationally, gold prices fell after investors shifted their focus to rising oil prices and expectations that the US Federal Reserve may continue raising interest rates to control inflation. Spot gold traded near $4,047 per ounce, while US gold futures also recorded noticeable losses. Global energy markets remained under pressure as Brent crude oil climbed to around $100 per barrel. Rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies supported higher crude prices. Analysts believe that increasing oil prices could push inflation higher around the world. This may encourage central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, to maintain a tighter monetary policy. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of gold because the precious metal does not provide any interest or fixed return to investors. As borrowing costs increase, investors often shift towards interest-bearing assets.

Police trace Aamir Khan threat to foreign VPN

The investigation into the threatening message sent to Bollywood star Aamir Khan has taken a new turn after police reportedly traced the message to a Sweden-based virtual private network (VPN), while authorities continue efforts to identify the individual behind it. According to police sources, the threatening audio message, which was allegedly circulated in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, was sent using technology designed to conceal the sender’s real location. Investigators believe the person responsible used both a VPN and the Tor browser, making it more difficult to determine their identity. Officials reportedly traced the initial IP address to Sweden, but suspect the location may have been masked through online privacy tools. Authorities are now working with digital evidence to establish the sender’s actual whereabouts and identity. The audio clip was allegedly sent after Aamir Khan’s recent marriage to Gauri Spratt. In the recording, the speaker, claiming to be Arzu Bishnoi, accused the actor of promoting what was described as “love jihad” and allegedly threatened to “teach Aamir Khan a lesson.” According to the report, the threat was accompanied by a social media post claiming to represent the Lawrence Bishnoi group. An excerpt from the alleged post read: “I, Aarzoo Bishnoi and Tyson Bishnoi (Lawrence Bishnoi Group), want to say that people like Aamir Khan are promoting what is being called ‘Love Jihad’ in our country, which is against our culture. We will not tolerate this man, and he will soon be made to face the consequences.” The message further claimed: “We promise our brothers, sisters, and fellow citizens that whoever promotes such disgraceful acts will be dealt with in our own way.” Police are treating the matter seriously because the threat referenced the jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose name has previously surfaced in several high-profile cases involving public figures. However, investigators have not confirmed whether the threat has any genuine connection to Bishnoi’s criminal network. Authorities are now examining digital records, internet routing information and communication platforms used to send the audio clip. Investigators have also reportedly contacted relevant online platforms and international authorities as part of efforts to obtain additional technical information. The threatening message surfaced shortly after Aamir Khan married his longtime partner Gauri Spratt in a private registered ceremony held at his Mumbai residence on July 5. The marriage marked the actor’s third. He was previously married to Reena Dutta, with whom he shares children Junaid and Ira, before later marrying filmmaker Kiran Rao. Although Aamir and Kiran divorced in 2021, they have continued to collaborate professionally, including on the acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies. For now, police have not announced any arrests. Investigators continue analysing the digital trail behind the threatening message while attempting to determine whether the sender acted alone or as part of a larger operation. Officials say the use of VPN services and anonymity tools has made the investigation more complex, but efforts to identify the individual responsible remain ongoing.
