Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Punjab reaffirmed their strategic partnership to advance climate-resilient agriculture, climate information services and sustainable water management during a high-level strategic meeting held at the Planning and Development Board, Government of Punjab, Lahore.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Rafaqat Ali, Secretary, Planning and Development Board, and attended by Mr. Aslam Javed, Member Agriculture, along with senior representatives from the Planning and Development Board, Agriculture Department, Irrigation Department, and other relevant public institutions.

The discussions focused on the Green Climate Fund-supported and Government of Punjab and Government of Sindh co-financed project “Transforming the Indus Basin with Climate Resilient Agriculture and Water Management.” In Punjab, the project is being implemented in Khanewal, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan and Lodhran, supporting government institutions and farming communities to respond more effectively to climate risks affecting agriculture and water resources.

The high-level FAO mission was led by Mr. Robert Simpson, Deputy Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific / FAO Representative ad interim in Pakistan, accompanied by Ms. HangThiThanh Pham, Senior Resilience Officer and Lead Technical Officer. The FAO delegation also included Mr. James Okoth, Officer in Charge, FAO Pakistan, Ms. Amina Bajwa, Assistant FAO Representative Programme, Ms. Emelda Berejena, Technical Adviser and Project Manager, Tousif Bhatti, Senior Ground Water Management Specialist , Mr. Mudasir Maqsood, Senior Water Management Expert, Mr. Mr. Waleed Ahmad, Provincial Coordinator Punjab, and Mr. Shahnawaz Arif, Communications Specialist.

The project is strengthening Punjab’s capacity to plan and act on climate risks through many interconnected areas like climate-resilient agriculture (CRA) practices, farmer field schools, CRA demonstration plots, improving climate and water information services, building on-farm resilience among smallholder farmers, and creating an enabling environment for long-term transformation in agriculture and water management.

In Punjab, the project has supported installation of 15 automatic weather stations and two flux towers, along with groundwater and surface-flow sensors to support improved climate and water information for planning and advisory services. The project has also supported water accounting, WaPOR-based evapotranspiration monitoring, groundwater assessments in Khanewal and Dera Ghazi Khan, and draft aquifer management plans for both districts.

At the field level, the project is helping farmers adopt climate-resilient agriculture and on-farm water management through farmer learning platforms, demonstration plots, Women Open Schools, field days and community-based extension support. By building the capacities of extension staff and Farmer Facilitators, the project is transferring practical, locally relevant knowledge to farming communities, helping farmers make better decisions, improve resource use, reduce climate-related risks and move towards more resilient farming systems.

The project is also strengthening the enabling environment for wider adoption through awareness campaigns, farmer advisories, training materials and digital outreach. By engaging financial institutions, it is helping link farming communities with services and financing opportunities needed to scale climate-resilient practices.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rafaqat Ali, Secretary, Planning and Development Board, said:

“Climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable water management are central to Punjab’s development priorities. The Government of Punjab values its partnership with FAO under this important initiative, which is strengthening institutional capacity, improving climate-informed planning and supporting practical solutions for farmers. The progress achieved so far provides a strong basis to deepen impact in the target districts and align project results with provincial priorities for food security, water efficiency and rural resilience.”

The chair further emphasized on strengthening coordination among government stakeholders and with FAO to expedite the project.

He directed to hold steering committee meetings frequently to remove any bottlenecks.

Mr. Robert Simpson appreciated the Government of Punjab’s leadership and continued collaboration.

“FAO deeply values its partnership with the Government of Punjab. This project demonstrates how climate science, water management, extension services and farmer-focused solutions can come together to support more resilient agricultural systems. Our shared priority is to ensure that technical investments translate into practical benefits for farming communities, especially smallholders facing increasing climate and water-related risks,” he said.

The meeting emphasized the importance of continued coordination among planning, agriculture, irrigation, meteorology, research, and extension institutions.

Participants discussed priorities for strengthening the use of climate data, improving water productivity, expanding farmer learning systems, supporting women farmers, and ensuring that field-level innovations are linked with government planning, policy and service delivery.

Through this partnership, FAO and the Government of Punjab are helping build a stronger foundation for climate adaptation in agriculture, improving the resilience of vulnerable farming communities and contributing to Pakistan’s broader goals of food security, sustainable water management and resilient rural development.

    The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Association has announced a nationwide shutdown of petrol stations from tonight after negotiations with the government failed to resolve the dispute over daily changes in petroleum prices. Association General Secretary Nauman Butt said talks between the Petroleum Minister and petrol pump owners ended without reaching any agreement. He said the association raised concerns over the government’s decision to revise petroleum product prices on a daily basis. However, the discussions did not produce a solution acceptable to both sides. The association has now decided to close petrol pumps across the country as a protest against the unresolved issue. The shutdown announcement has raised concerns about possible disruptions in fuel supply and difficulties for consumers if the strike continues. Further developments are expected as the government and petrol pump representatives may hold additional talks to resolve the matter and restore normal fuel services. The government had earlier decided to introduce a daily petroleum pricing mechanism in view of the deteriorating regional security situation. Under the new policy, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will announce petroleum prices on a daily basis without requiring approval from the prime minister or the federal government. However, fuel prices announced on Fridays will remain unchanged on Saturdays and Sundays. The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Association (APPPA) has rejected the petroleum price deregulation policy and urged the government to reconsider its decision. Association Chairman Nauman Ali Butt said the burden created by the new pricing system should not be placed on petrol pump owners. He stressed that all stakeholders should be consulted before finalising fuel prices with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Butt added that nearly 15,000 petrol pump owners across Pakistan have expressed serious concerns over the new policy and called on the government to address their reservations before implementing the system.

Across the border, authorities in Russia’s Belgorod region reported that a Ukrainian drone attack killed five people and wounded 25 others. Odesa seaport takes major damage Zelenskiy said a strike had damaged Odesa’s seaport, a critical hub for Ukraine’s agricultural exports. Local authorities reported that dozens of drones and missiles struck the southern seaside city, wounding a dozen people in the process. “In this way, the Russians are at war with the world’s food security,” Zelenskiy said, framing the attack as part of a broader effort by Moscow to disrupt global grain supplies that flow through Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. The Ukrainian president said Russia also struck nine other regions across the country on Sunday, extending the assault well beyond Odesa alone. Russia has spent months bombarding Odesa in a sustained campaign aimed at cutting Ukraine off from the Black Sea and choking its export routes. Ihor, a 67 year old Odesa resident whose apartment narrowly avoided destruction in the latest strikes, said residents have grown accustomed to the danger. “Everyone who lives in Odesa knows that the most common target is around the port area,” he said. Ukraine strikes Russian oil tankers in response As Ukraine works to choke off the revenue Russia relies on to fund its war effort, Kyiv’s forces have repeatedly targeted Russian oil tankers and other cargo vessels moving through the Black Sea. Ukrainian forces claimed three additional strikes on such vessels on Sunday alone. Both countries have widened their campaigns against each other’s logistics networks in recent months. E-commerce warehouses on both sides of the border and Ukrainian petrol stations have come under sustained attack throughout the summer. Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz reported a significant rise in attacks on its facilities over the past three days, including strikes on oil extraction sites overnight. Ukraine’s energy ministry said Russian forces also struck power facilities in the Odesa region, cutting electricity to a substantial share of the port city’s residents overnight. Power had already been restored to 90,000 consumers by Sunday, the ministry said.     Mother, daughter killed in Lahore road crash

    A tragic road accident claimed the lives of a woman and her young daughter in Lahore’s suburban area of Manga Mandi after a passenger bus collided with their motorcycle.     Muzaffargarh canal accident: Last missing victim?…

    KOT ADDU: The body of the last person missing after the tragic Muzaffargarh Canal accident has been recovered near Head Kallo, bringing the search and rescue operation to an end. The body was recovered during a continued search operation launched to locate people who went missing following the accident. Rescue teams had been conducting searches at different points along the canal, including Head Kallo, day and night. According to officials, water was released into the canal following a request from the families of the victims. Due to the flow of water, the missing person’s body surfaced near Head Kallo. Rescue personnel deployed at the location immediately responded and recovered the body. The search operation continued despite the release of water into the canal. Teams from the district administration, Rescue 1122 and other relevant departments remained engaged in the operation under the direction of Kot Addu Deputy Commissioner Bilal Saleem and the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Kot Addu Farrukh Mahmood. Rescue teams were deployed at multiple locations along the canal. They maintained continuous surveillance and carried out searches in different sections to locate all missing persons. With the recovery of the latest body, officials said that all people reported missing in connection with the Muzaffargarh Canal accident have now been found. The rescue teams are completing the necessary procedures following the recovery. The body will be handed over to the relevant authorities for identification and other legal formalities. The district administration and rescue teams used all available resources throughout the operation. Officials also provided possible assistance and cooperation to the affected families during the search. The recovery of the last missing victim marks the completion of the search for those reported missing after the tragic canal accident.
