ISLAMABAD: A video of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir placing his hand affectionately on the heads of women during a ceremony has gained widespread attention on social media.

The video surfaced during the inauguration of the Victory Monument in Islamabad on Independence Day. During the event, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir and other senior civilian and military leaders met families of martyrs and military veterans. The leadership paid tribute to their sacrifices and services.

The Victory Monument was inaugurated on Thursday night in a ceremony attended by the country’s top civilian and military leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended as chief guests.

Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, was also present. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf attended the ceremony as well.

The monument has been built to honour Pakistan’s martyrs and commemorate the military confrontation with India in May. The event featured a series of patriotic performances and visual displays.

The ceremony opened with a military band playing the national anthem. A special light and sound show titled “Dastaan-e-Ishq-e-Watan: Marka-e-Haq” was later presented.

Projection mapping technology was used to display visuals on the monument. The presentation highlighted themes linked to patriotism, sacrifice and the country’s defence.

A documentary was also screened during the event. It showcased the construction of the monument and the eight-month journey from its initial design and development to completion.

The monument features five large arches. According to the presentation, the arches represent the five pillars of Islam. They also symbolise five pillars of Pakistan, identified as the government, armed forces, media, people and national ideology.

The structure incorporates elements representing Pakistan’s three military services. Its design also highlights the country’s capabilities in cyber defence and space warfare.

Pakistan Air Force fighter jets conducted an aerial display during the ceremony. The aircraft released flares across the night sky, adding to the spectacle.

The event concluded with a flag-hoisting ceremony attended by President Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. Fireworks were also displayed as the national anthem played.

    The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has kept its policy rate unchanged at 11.5 per cent, maintaining the existing monetary policy stance amid concerns over economic growth. The decision was announced on Monday by SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed following a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The central bank’s decision was largely expected by financial market analysts. Most experts had predicted that the SBP would maintain the current rate to support macroeconomic stability while monitoring economic conditions. Market surveys conducted by brokerage firms showed that more than 90 per cent of respondents expected the policy rate to remain unchanged. Only a small number of analysts had anticipated a possible increase. The decision comes as Pakistan continues to balance economic stability with the need to encourage business activity and investment. Higher interest rates can help control inflation and support financial stability, but they can also increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. The SBP had reduced its policy rate by 50 basis points to 10.5pc in December 2025. It later raised the rate by 100 basis points to 11.5pc in April 2026. Since then, the central bank has maintained the rate at 11.5pc. Business groups have continued to call for a significant reduction in borrowing costs. They argue that lower interest rates could help businesses expand operations, increase investment and support economic activity. However, the central bank has opted for a cautious approach. Policymakers appear focused on maintaining overall economic stability while assessing inflation, growth and other financial indicators.

    Pakistani leadership arrives in Jeddah

    Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Jeddah on Thursday evening to begin three-day official visit. This high profile visit aims at bilateral ties, strategic defense cooperation and economic alignment between Islamabad and Riyadh. The Pakistani leader was invited by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The Pakistani premier leads a prominent delegation of top cabinet ministers and senior military leadership at a pivotal juncture for regional security and economic growth.  Diplomatic Reception in Jeddah Upon landing at King Abdulaziz International Airport, the Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation were formally greeted on the tarmac with full diplomatic protocol. Deputy Governor of the Makkah Region, Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, spearheaded the Saudi delegation receiving the Pakistani leadership. High-level Saudi officials, including Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley, alongside Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ahmad Farooq and key diplomatic representatives, were present to facilitate the delegation’s arrival. The cordial reception reflects the long-standing warmth, mutual trust, and shared history defining relations between the two brotherly nations. High-Powered Delegation Reflects Strategic Focus The composition of the Pakistani delegation highlights the multi-faceted priorities of the three-day state visit, spanning defense, diplomacy, and communication. Traveling alongside Prime Minister Sharif is the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose presence underlines the vital military-to-military and security architecture underpinning the bilateral relationship. The delegation also includes Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi. Adding further diplomatic weight, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar is joining the delegation directly in the Kingdom. Dar arrived following a brief stopover in Madinah after completing an official trip to Jordan, where he attended high-level ministerial consultations regarding regional affairs and Jerusalem. Key Summit Agenda: Defense, Economy, and Regional Stability At the center of the visit is a bilateral summit between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Spiritual Obligations and Long-Standing Alliance In addition to formal bilateral talks and official engagements, Prime Minister Sharif and members of his entourage will perform Umrah in the Holy City of Makkah. The delegation is also scheduled to travel to Madinah Munawwarah to pay respects at the Roza-e-Rasool (Peace Be Upon Him).

    Fake arms licence racket busted in KP, two arreste…

    Police have uncovered a fake arms licence racket in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, exposing an illegal network that allegedly produced forged weapon licences from a house. Authorities believe the operation had been running through a well-organised system and involved both private individuals and a government employee. According to police, the suspects were preparing counterfeit arms licences using computer equipment and printing materials inside a residential property. Investigators said each fake licence was sold for amounts ranging from Rs80,000 to Rs250,000, depending on the type of licence and the customer’s requirements. Police said an employee of the Home Department’s Licence Branch has also been found involved in the case. His alleged role is being investigated to determine how official records or procedures may have been misused. A case has been registered, and two suspects have been arrested during the operation. Police carried out a raid and seized a large quantity of equipment allegedly used to manufacture the fake licences. The recovered items include a laptop, a printer, ink bottles, around 700 licence cards, and other materials believed to have been used for printing forged documents. Investigators are examining the seized equipment to identify additional suspects and uncover the full scale of the operation. Police have also written to the Home Department, requesting assistance in the investigation. Officials are expected to examine departmental records to determine whether more employees were involved or if official data was misused. Sources in the Home Department said a committee will be formed to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident. The committee will investigate the role of all individuals linked to the case and recommend legal and departmental action where necessary. CCPO Dr Mian Saeed said the investigation is progressing and that authorities are determined to bring everyone involved to justice. He said strict action will be taken against all suspects, including any government officials found responsible. He added that no official involved in the fake arms licence racket would be given any leniency, and the investigation would continue until the entire network is exposed.

    Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets to sight Rabi…

    The meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee to sight the moon of Rabi-ul-Awwal 1448 AH is underway in Islamabad. The meeting is being held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Kohsar Block under the chairmanship of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has predicted that the Rabi-ul-Awwal moon is unlikely to be sighted today. According to SUPARCO, the chances of sighting the moon are very low as it will be approximately 20 hours and 53 minutes old at sunset. SUPARCO said Rabi-ul-Awwal 1 is likely to fall on Saturday. However, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is the competent authority to make the final announcement regarding the sighting or non-sighting of the moon.

    Ibrahim Zadran’s brilliant 95 off 65 balls powered Jaffna Kings to a 19-run victory over Colombo Kaps in the 15th match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. Set a daunting target of 203, Colombo Kaps were restricted to 183-9 in their 20 overs. Rubin Hermann was cleaned up by Dilshan Madushanka in the second over before Sadeera Samarawickrama and Ashen Bandara steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership. Bandara made 15. The scorecard read 58-2 in seven overs when skipper Kamindu Mendis joined Samarawickrama. The duo stitched a 39-run partnership to take the total near the 100-run mark. Jaffna Kings struck back with back-to-back wickets to jolt Caps’ progress, leaving them at 97-3. The lower-order kept Caps in the hunt, but with the asking rate soaring, it was an up-and-down affair. For Jaffna Kings, Dilshan Madushanka scalped three wickets. Earlier, after losing Avishka Fernando in the second over, Kamil Mishara and Ibrahim Zadran raised a half-century stand to end the powerplay on a strong note. Mishara hit two sixes and five fours in his 44 from 19 balls. Kings’ scorecard read 68-2 in 7.1 overs when Dunith Wellalage joined Zadran at the crease.     Foreign nationals seek asylum in Canada following world cup

    A total of 175 foreign visitors who travelled to Canada during the FIFA World Cup have formally requested asylum, triggering legal reviews under the country’s refugee protection laws. Canada issued approximately 26,000 visas for the tournament, which saw 13 matches staged across Toronto and Vancouver. While thousands of football fans globally applied for visitor visas to attend the fixtures, strict screening measures resulted in over 50 per cent of those applications being rejected. Immigration officials have not disclosed whether any athletes or team members are among the claimants. However, initial breakdown data indicates that 25 applicants are citizens of Ghana, while Egypt and Colombia account for 15 claims each, with total figures expected to climb further. Canadian authorities had issued warnings prior to the tournament clarifying that temporary visas obtained for the World Cup would not serve as an avenue to bypass immigration standards, remain beyond authorised stays or claim political asylum.
