Fifth Thai Soldier Killed as Border Clashes Intensify; Thai Jets Strike Cambodian Targets

BaANGKOK – The escalating conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border has claimed the life of a fifth Thai soldier, identified as 20-year-old Private Therdsak Srilachai of the 3rd Infantry Battalion. The young soldier, a native of Ban Phusing in Si Sa Ket province, died from severe shrapnel wounds sustained from a Cambodian BM-21 rocket during fighting near Khana Temple in Surin. He succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Phanom Dong Rak Hospital.

Cambodian Rockets, Drones, and Shells Strike Thai Border Provinces

Private Therdsak, who had lived with relatives since childhood after the passing of his parents, has been widely mourned online, with Thais honoring him as a brave serviceman who sacrificed his life defending the nation’s territory.

Amid the continued hostilities, the Royal Thai Air Force conducted targeted airstrikes on Cambodian military facilities and alleged scam centers. At approximately 9:59 a.m., Thai F-16 fighter jets bombed an arms depot, a maintenance center, and a tank storage facility located about 30 kilometers inside Cambodian territory, opposite Ban Nong Chan village in Sa Kaeo. Later, around 11:10 a.m., an F-16 and a Gripen fighter struck a former casino in O Samet, across from the Chong Chom border pass in Surin. Thai authorities stated the casino had been repurposed by Cambodian forces as a base for launching explosive-laden drones and storing heavy weaponry, including BM-21 multi-rocket systems.

The humanitarian impact of the conflict continues to grow. The Second Army Region reported that over 170,000 Thai civilians have sought refuge in 696 temporary shelters across Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, and Buri Ram provinces. Additionally, more than 4,000 vulnerable individuals—including the disabled, elderly, and sick—are being housed separately in 75 locations. In an effort to support morale, the army has organized recreational activities at the shelters.

Ground clashes remain active on multiple fronts. In Sa Kaeo, the First Army Region reported engagements on five fronts, including exchanges of artillery and mortar fire in Ban Klong Paeng and Ban Nong Ya Kaew, minor small-arms clashes in Ban Nong Chan and Ban Klong Luek, and Thai artillery firing on three Cambodian armored personnel carriers in Klong Hat district. Thai forces maintain control of several border villages and continue to reinforce their positions.

The ministry said another missile was fired at the vessel while rescue teams were trying to reach the crew. It accused the attackers of attempting to disrupt the rescue operation and increase the number of casualties. The ministry condemned the incident and described the attack as a serious threat to maritime security and international trade. It also warned that attacks on commercial vessels carrying essential goods could affect food and consumer supplies in Yemen. There was no immediate statement from the Houthis regarding the reported attack. According to maritime security sources, the crew lost control of the vessel after the attack. Yemeni coastguard personnel moved towards the ship, but the responding forces reportedly came under fire. The incident occurred near Perim Island, a strategically important location close to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. A British maritime security organisation said the vessel was reportedly at anchor northeast of the island when it was struck. The ship was reportedly carrying food supplies and had departed from the government-controlled Yemeni port of Al-Mokha on Saturday. Maritime data indicates that shipping activity through the Bab al-Mandeb and Red Sea has fallen sharply amid continuing security concerns. Traffic through the strategic waterway has declined by more than half compared with levels recorded before an earlier wave of Houthi attacks on commercial shipping. The latest restrictions have further reduced shipping activity in the region. Industry data showed that an average of about 32 vessels passed through the strait each day last week, compared with around 50 before the latest blockade was announced. The Bab al-Mandeb connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as a major international shipping route. Any prolonged disruption could affect the movement of food, fuel and other essential goods between Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The incident also adds to concerns over the safety of Pakistani nationals amid the widening regional conflict.

    DPM Dar boosts Pakistan-ADB partnership

Earlier, the prime minister travelled to Makkah, where he performed Umrah along with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir. The visit was undertaken at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. A major outcome of the trip was the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. The agreement aims to strengthen defence coordination, collective security and regional stability among the three countries. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the signatories will be considered an attack against all three, establishing a framework for collective deterrence. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening strategic and defence cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye amid growing security challenges in the region.
