KARACHI: A fire broke out at a warehouse near Shershah in Karachi West, prompting emergency response teams to rush to the scene and begin efforts to bring the blaze under control.

According to Rescue 1122, its teams were immediately dispatched to the affected area after receiving information about the incident. Rescue personnel are currently engaged in firefighting operations and are working to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings and commercial establishments.

The fire reportedly erupted at a warehouse located in the vicinity of Shershah, an area known for its busy commercial and industrial activities. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, while officials have not immediately provided details regarding the extent of the damage or whether anyone was injured.

Rescue 1122 officials said their teams were actively working at the site to control the flames. Firefighters are using emergency equipment to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the warehouse or surrounding properties.

The incident has raised concerns because warehouse fires can spread rapidly, particularly when buildings contain combustible materials, packaging, chemicals or other flammable goods. Such fires can also generate thick smoke, making firefighting operations more difficult and creating risks for people living or working nearby.

Emergency personnel have been focusing on bringing the situation under control while assessing the conditions inside and around the affected warehouse. Authorities may also inspect the premises after the fire is extinguished to determine how the incident started and whether safety regulations were being followed.

The Shershah area is one of Karachi’s important commercial zones, with numerous warehouses, workshops, markets and businesses operating in and around the locality. A fire in such an area can potentially affect surrounding businesses and disrupt traffic and commercial activity.

Rana Sanaullah compares AJK protesters to former m…

Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah has compared some protesters in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) to militant groups that Pakistan had trained in the past, claiming that certain elements later turned against the country. Speaking during an interview Sanaullah alleged that individuals associated with armed organisations had become involved in the ongoing unrest in AJK. He claimed that these groups possessed weapons and were attempting to exploit public gatherings to create instability rather than pursue legitimate political objectives. According to the prime minister’s adviser, the protesters do not have genuine political demands and are instead using ordinary citizens as a shield while pursuing what he described as a broader agenda. He suggested that the situation involved elements who wanted to take advantage of public sentiment and use the protests to challenge the state. Sanaullah also defended the actions of law enforcement agencies, arguing that the authorities had few alternatives in dealing with what he characterised as an armed threat. He said security forces had to respond when groups carrying weapons created a law-and-order situation and posed a threat to public safety. The adviser maintained that the government could not allow armed groups to operate freely under the cover of protests. He said law enforcement agencies would continue to take action whenever necessary to maintain order and protect citizens. His comments come at a time of heightened political and social tensions in AJK, where protests have sparked a wider debate about public grievances, governance, law enforcement, and the government’s response. The situation has also raised questions about how authorities should balance the right to peaceful protest with the need to prevent violence and maintain public order. Sanaullah’s remarks are expected to fuel further discussion about the nature of the ongoing demonstrations and the role of political and armed elements in the unrest. While the government has emphasised the need for strict action against violence and armed activity, critics have continued to call for dialogue and political engagement to address the underlying concerns of the people of AJK.

Pakistan, US move closer to finalising reciprocal trade framework

Pakistan and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to finalising a reciprocal trade framework at the earliest, signalling significant progress in negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and long-term economic cooperation. The renewed commitment was expressed during a virtual meeting held on Wednesday between Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer. The two sides reviewed the progress made by their negotiating teams and discussed the remaining steps required to conclude the proposed agreement. According to an official statement, both countries acknowledged that negotiations have advanced substantially in recent months and reiterated their shared determination to complete the reciprocal trade framework as soon as possible. During the meeting, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb referred to the recent discussions held in Washington, D.C., and appreciated the constructive approach adopted by both negotiating teams. He said the steady progress reflects the mutual commitment of Pakistan and the United States to deepen economic ties and expand commercial cooperation. The finance minister stressed that maintaining the current momentum in negotiations is crucial for Pakistan’s broader economic agenda. He noted that a stronger trade and investment partnership with the United States would support Pakistan’s export-led growth strategy, improve economic resilience, attract foreign investment, and create new business opportunities for companies in both countries. Aurangzeb also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank), saying enhanced financial cooperation could facilitate trade, encourage investment, and strengthen business-to-business engagement between the two countries. On the US side, Ambassador Jamieson Greer acknowledged Pakistan’s consistent engagement throughout the negotiation process and appreciated the progress achieved on key labour and regulatory reforms. He particularly welcomed Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen compliance with international labour standards, including measures related to preventing forced labour. The US trade representative reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to advancing bilateral trade discussions and expressed confidence that the remaining issues could be resolved through continued technical-level consultations between the two sides. Finance Minister Aurangzeb emphasised the need for close coordination between officials from both countries and called for accelerated technical discussions to build on the progress already achieved. He said timely completion of the agreement would open new avenues for economic cooperation and strengthen long-term bilateral relations. Both delegations expressed satisfaction over the pace of negotiations and agreed to continue regular engagement to finalise the outstanding elements of the reciprocal trade framework. The officials reaffirmed their shared objective of concluding the agreement in the near future, paving the way for stronger trade, investment, and economic collaboration between Pakistan and the United States.

Olivia Munn reveals the style shift that helped he…

Olivia Munn is opening up about how she found her personal style again after navigating motherhood, postpartum anxiety and a difficult breast cancer journey. The 46-year-old actress recently spoke with USA Today about how her experiences changed the way she viewed her body, clothing and identity. For Munn, fashion became more than choosing an outfit. It became a way to reconnect with herself after years of major changes. (People.com) Munn first struggled with her changing body after welcoming her son, Malcolm, in 2021. She said she had expected her body to return to how it looked before pregnancy, but that did not happen. Breastfeeding, weight changes and a larger bust also meant many of her clothes no longer fit. At the same time, Munn was dealing with postpartum anxiety, which she described as an isolating experience. Instead of immediately replacing her entire wardrobe, she began making more intentional choices. Comfort, simplicity and clothing that made her feel confident became more important than following every new trend. Her style journey took another turn after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. Munn underwent multiple surgeries, including a double mastectomy and later reconstruction, as she focused on her health and recovery. (People.com) After going through what she described as years of “back-to-back battles,” Munn reached a turning point. She realized she was tired of feeling disconnected from the way she dressed and decided she wanted to reclaim that part of herself. Rather than allowing her experiences to dictate what she could wear, Munn began figuring out what made her feel comfortable and authentic again. Her approach became less about dressing according to expectations and more about dressing for herself. That mindset also influenced her recent partnership with fashion brand Anne Klein. Munn has embraced clothing that feels polished while still fitting her lifestyle and changing body. Her story highlights how personal style can become part of rebuilding confidence after major life changes. For Munn, finding the right clothes was not simply about looking good. It was about recognizing herself again. After years of physical and emotional challenges, she is choosing to make room for joy, confidence and self-expression. Munn’s style shift is ultimately a story about reclaiming identity. She is no longer waiting to feel like her old self. Instead, she is discovering who she is now—and dressing for that woman.

WhatsApp web gets voice and video calling

WhatsApp has introduced a major update that brings voice and video calling to WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through their web browsers. Previously, these features were available only on the mobile app and the native desktop application. With this latest expansion, WhatsApp Web now offers a more complete communication experience, making it easier for users to stay connected without switching devices. The update significantly enhances the web version by introducing a dedicated Calls tab, where users can view their recent call history, access favorite contacts, and start voice or video calls with ease. WhatsApp Web also now supports features such as screen sharing and emoji reactions during calls, bringing it closer to the experience already available on the desktop application. According to Meta, these improvements are designed to make conversations more convenient for both personal and professional use. Whether users are catching up with friends and family or participating in work meetings, the new calling features aim to provide a smoother and more interactive experience. One of the most notable additions is the ability to transfer an ongoing call between devices without disconnecting. For example, a user who answers a call on a computer can seamlessly continue the conversation on a smartphone without interruption. This feature offers greater flexibility for people who frequently switch between devices during the day. WhatsApp has also introduced waiting rooms for group calls. When creating a call link, hosts can enable the “Require approval to join” option, allowing them to decide who can enter the call. This added layer of control is expected to be especially useful for business meetings, online classes, and large group discussions. The latest update also improves call quality by introducing background noise suppression, helping reduce unwanted sounds during voice and video calls made in noisy environments. In addition, Meta has enhanced video performance by enabling high-definition (HD) video streaming within the first few seconds of a call, providing users with a clearer and sharper video experience much sooner than before. The announcement comes as Meta continues to expand WhatsApp beyond traditional messaging. The company is also developing WhatsApp usernames, which will allow users to connect and make calls without relying solely on phone numbers, offering greater privacy and convenience. The new calling features are being rolled out gradually to WhatsApp users around the world. As the update reaches more devices, users will gain access to a more powerful communication platform that combines messaging, voice calls, video conferencing, and collaboration tools in a single service.

Shehbaz, Bangladesh PM set for first Jakarta meeti…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman next week in Jakarta, Indonesia. The meeting will be the first between the two leaders since Tarique Rahman assumed office as Bangladesh’s prime minister around six months ago. The meeting is being viewed as significant in light of recent regional developments. Both leaders will be in Jakarta to attend the 12th summit of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation. The nine-member grouping is focused on strengthening economic cooperation among its member states. The three-day summit is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17. The summit was earlier postponed in April due to the conflict that emerged in the Middle East. Leaders from member countries are now expected to gather in Jakarta for discussions on regional and economic issues. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to hold a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the summit. The Pakistani prime minister is likely to meet other participating leaders as well. His expected engagements include a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meetings are expected to provide an opportunity to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments and areas of mutual interest. The expected meeting between the Pakistani and Bangladeshi prime ministers also comes amid efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries. Both sides have shown interest in expanding cooperation in different areas. Pakistan has also decided not to seek special permission from India to use its airspace for the prime minister’s journey to Indonesia. Instead, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s aircraft will take an alternative route to reach Jakarta. The change in travel route will allow the Pakistani delegation to proceed with its scheduled participation in the D-8 summit without seeking special approval from India.

Healthy diet out of reach for one in three people globally, UN report reveals

One in three people worldwide, approximately 2.69 billion individuals, cannot afford a healthy, nutrient-rich diet, according to a joint report by five United Nations agencies. The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2026 calculates the global average cost of a healthy diet at 4.28 purchasing power parity (PPP) dollars per day. This figure significantly exceeds the international extreme poverty line of $3 PPP per person, placing diverse, nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, and lean meats out of economic reach for billions. Public health experts note that historic agricultural subsidies have heavily favoured starchy staples over nutrient-dense options, driving a global surge in adult obesity rates from 12.1 per cent in 2012 to 16.2 per cent in 2024. While global hunger declined for a third consecutive year in 2025, affecting 7.8 per cent of the world’s population compared to 8.1 per cent in 2024, regional disparities remain severe. Africa has become home to the highest absolute number of hungry people for the first time, with roughly 309 million affected. Across the continent, 66.6 per cent of the population was unable to afford a healthy diet in 2025, more than double the rates observed in Asia or Latin America. UN officials warn that ongoing disruptions to maritime trade, alongside potential climate shocks, threaten to reverse recent progress and jeopardise international targets to eliminate global hunger by 2030.
