FO rejects India’s criticism of AJK elections

Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) has strongly rejected India’s criticism of the ongoing Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) legislative elections, saying New Delhi has neither the legal standing nor the moral authority to question the democratic process in the region.

Speaking at the weekly media briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi dismissed remarks made by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which had described the AJK elections as a “farce.” He termed India’s comments baseless, politically motivated and an attempt to undermine a democratic process being conducted under the constitutional and legal framework of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Andrabi said the elections are taking place in a peaceful, transparent and orderly manner despite security challenges, reflecting the democratic aspirations and political will of the people of AJK. He added that Pakistan remains committed to ensuring a free and fair electoral process in the region.

The spokesperson said India’s criticism comes as the seventh anniversary of New Delhi’s August 5, 2019 decision to revoke the special constitutional status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) is being observed. He maintained that those unilateral measures violated international law, relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and India’s own international commitments.

He reiterated Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised disputed territory, whose final status should be determined through a UN-supervised plebiscite in accordance with relevant UNSC resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

Andrabi also accused India of attempting to divert global attention from alleged human rights violations and restrictions on political freedoms in occupied Kashmir. He said references to casualty figures and other claims made by Indian authorities cannot overshadow concerns raised by the international community over the situation in the region.

Responding to another question regarding India’s reaction to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent remarks on Youm-e-Istehsal, Andrabi described the Indian statement as an effort to justify its policies in occupied Kashmir.

He alleged that a heavy military presence, strict security laws and demographic changes continue to affect the Muslim-majority character of the territory. He further claimed that development projects promoted by India cannot replace the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination

    The Punjab government has taken a major step towards holding long-delayed local government elections, approving Rs12.52 billion for the polls that could finally restore elected local councils across the province after an 11-year gap. The decision was taken during the 36th meeting of the Punjab Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The allocation signals that the provincial government is preparing for a fresh local election process after years of political, legal and administrative delays. Punjab last held local government elections in 2015, during the tenure of former chief minister Shehbaz Sharif. Polling was conducted in phases between October and December that year, while elected councils formally assumed office in 2017 following indirect elections for mayors and chairpersons. However, the local government system subsequently faced repeated disruptions. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government dissolved the elected local bodies in April 2019 before their scheduled completion. Although the Supreme Court later ordered their restoration, the councils eventually completed their term on December 31, 2021. Under Article 140A of the Constitution and the Elections Act, local government elections are required within 120 days after the expiry of local councils. This meant Punjab’s next elections were due in April 2022. Yet successive governments repeatedly changed local government laws, forcing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to restart key preparations. Polls Could Be Held by November The latest development has raised hopes that Punjab may finally see local elections later this year. PILDAT President Ahmad Bilal Mehboob welcomed the cabinet’s decision to allocate funds, describing it as a positive indication that the electoral process could move forward. He said the ECP had completed the demarcation and delimitation process and dealt with objections, making it possible for the commission to announce an election schedule after August 17. According to Mehboob, if there is no “unseen factor”, local government elections could be held in Punjab by November 2026. The move could also have wider political implications. Asked whether the PML-N government’s decision might ease pressure surrounding demands for the creation of new provinces, Mehboob said provincial restructuring remained a complex issue. However, he noted that holding local elections could, to some extent, reduce the pressure for new provinces by strengthening grassroots representation. For millions of Punjab residents, the key question now is whether the latest budget allocation will finally translate into polling stations, elected councils and a functioning local government system after years of waiting.

    COPENHAGEN: Denmark’s Princess Isabella has begun her mandatory military service, becoming the first member of the Danish royal family to complete the country’s full compulsory military training under its updated national service program. The 19-year-old princess, the eldest daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, reported for duty on August 3 after completing her education. She is expected to serve for 11 months as part of Denmark’s expanded military service requirements. In a gesture that has drawn public attention, Princess Isabella has declined to receive the salary and daily allowances provided to military recruits. According to the Danish royal household, she will instead rely on financial support from her parents to cover her personal expenses during training. Her older brother, Crown Prince Christian, previously completed military training, but Isabella is the first royal to undertake the extended compulsory service introduced under Denmark’s revised defense policy. Denmark expanded mandatory military service to include women in 2024 and increased the duration of service from four months to 11 months. The changes were introduced in response to Europe’s evolving security environment, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and growing strategic concerns in the Arctic region. This week, around 1,600 young recruits began their military service across the country, while Denmark is also preparing to deploy personnel to Greenland for the first time as part of its strengthened defense strategy.
