RAWALPINDI: Senior Justice of the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench, Sadaqat Ali Khan, has described freedom as the greatest blessing and called on citizens to contribute positively to Pakistan’s progress by following the vision and principles of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

He was speaking at a grand Independence Day ceremony held at the premises of the Lahore High Court ( LHC) Rawalpindi Bench, attended by Justice Mirza Waqas Rauf, retired judges, senior lawyers and court officials.

The ceremony began with a guard of honour for Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan, who later hoisted the national flag alongside fellow judges. Senior judicial officers, representatives of the legal community and other officials also participated in the event.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan said Pakistan’s independence was achieved through immense sacrifices by the Muslims of the subcontinent under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He said Independence Day was not merely a celebration of freedom but also a reminder of the determination and struggle that led to the creation of Pakistan.

He paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives and resources for the country’s independence, saying their sacrifices should inspire the nation to work for Pakistan’s development and prosperity.

The senior judge stressed that every citizen has a responsibility to play a constructive role in strengthening the country and advancing the ideals envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam.

    KOLKATA: Indian wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has been arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with a case involving allegations of rape and other sexual offences, with a court remanding the 23-year-old cricketer to three days of police custody. Porel was arrested on Monday night and produced before the High Court the following day. The development comes as police investigate allegations made against the emerging cricketer. Police subsequently sought additional time to complete the required legal and investigative procedures. Porel, who bats left-handed and keeps wicket, has emerged as one of India’s promising young domestic cricketers. He has represented Bengal and has played 32 first-class matches, while also featuring in 35 Indian Premier League games. His most recent competitive cricket came during the 2026 IPL season, when he appeared in four matches for Delhi Capitals before the tournament concluded. The arrest is likely to draw significant attention because of Porel’s growing profile in Indian cricket. However, the allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings, and no conclusion about his guilt can be drawn from the arrest alone. The police investigation is expected to focus on the allegations, the electronic evidence mentioned in court and statements from those involved in the case.

    Islamabad: A man accused of preparing fake National Assembly identity cards and a false appointment letter showing himself as an Assistant Director has been arrested. His mobile phone and laptop were seized for forensic examination, a parliamentary committee was informed. The fake appointment document, falsely carrying the name of the National Assembly Secretariat, had been circulated on social media. The Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges expressed serious concern over the case and directed the Federal Investigation Agency to continue its investigation and submit a detailed report at the committee’s next meeting. The committee was chaired by MNA Muhammad Afzal at Parliament House. According to the briefing by the Additional Director General of the FIA, the accused, Abdul Wajid, had been arrested and produced before a court. The FIA told the committee that investigators had obtained his physical remand to continue questioning him. According to the FIA briefing, Abdul Wajid admitted during interrogation that he had prepared fake National Assembly identity cards bearing his own name. The agency further informed the committee that he had also prepared a fake appointment letter showing himself as an Assistant Director of the National Assembly of Pakistan. The committee was told that the fake appointment or offer letter had also appeared on different social media platforms, falsely presented as a document issued by the National Assembly Secretariat. Investigators took the accused’s mobile phone and laptop into custody through a formal seizure process. Investigators seized the accused’s mobile phone and laptop through a formal process. The devices will now undergo forensic analysis as investigators try to determine how the fake documents were prepared and circulated. After discussing the matter, the committee ordered the FIA to investigate the case further and provide a complete report. Members expressed concern over his failure to attend the meeting and directed that he be summoned to appear before the committee at its next sitting. The question of privilege had been raised by MNA Khawaja Izhar ul Hassan. The committee was informed that the former Director General had not obtained written permission from the committee for his absence. The committee therefore decided to summon him at its next meeting. Members also reviewed several proposed changes to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly. Amendments proposed by MNA Dr Nafisa Shah to rules 295, 296, 30, 31 and 205 were examined after the committee received views from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Law and Justice. After discussion, the committee recommended that the proposed changes to rules 295, 296 and 205 should not be approved. However, the committee recommended approving the proposed amendments to rules 30 and 31. The committee also considered amendments proposed by MNA Aliya Kamran to rule 44. After receiving views from the concerned ministries and discussing the proposal, the committee recommended that the amendment to rule 44 should not be approved. Members separately reviewed amendments relating to rules 118 and 119 as well as a proposal to remove rule 234A. The committee recommended that the amendment to rule 118 should be approved with changes. It also recommended removing rule 234A as proposed. A final decision on the proposed amendment to rule 119 was delayed until the committee’s next meeting. Questions of privilege moved by MNA Makhdoom Syed Sami ul Hassan Gillani were also postponed because the mover was unavailable. The committee also adopted a report prepared by a sub committee led by MNA Azhar Qayyum Nahra. The fake appointment letter case remained one of the most serious matters before the committee. Lawmakers are now waiting for the FIA forensic examination and detailed investigation report to establish the full circumstances behind the preparation and circulation of the false National Assembly documents.

    Uzma Khan, sister of incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan, said Friday that the PTI founder had complained of health problems that he believed were connected to his prolonged solitary confinement. She made the remarks during a press conference in Islamabad alongside Imran’s personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, following his transfer to hospital for a medical examination. Uzma said she and Dr Sultan were asked to reach Adiala Jail on Friday evening after receiving a phone call. According to her, they arrived at the prison at around 8pm to 8:30pm. She said they were taken to a room belonging to a deputy superintendent of police. After some time, she alleged, Dr Sultan was asked to leave the room with a police official while she was taken separately by a female police officer. Uzma said police officers did not explain where she was being taken or provide clear information about Dr Sultan. She was eventually taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), despite the Supreme Court directing that Imran be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for a medical checkup. According to Uzma, officials told her the visit to Pims was related to a follow-up examination of Imran’s eye condition. She described the hospital environment as unusually dark and said she was taken through the building with the help of a mobile phone flashlight before being brought to an office. Uzma said she was later taken upstairs, where she unexpectedly saw her brother. She recalled that Imran appeared surprised and shocked to see her after a long period apart. He reportedly introduced her to the doctors as his sister, saying they were meeting after about 10 months. Uzma said she informed Imran that he had been brought for a medical examination and was expected to be taken to Shifa International Hospital afterward. She also asked about Dr Sultan but said she was not given a clear answer. The examination eventually focused on Imran’s eye. Uzma said several doctors were present, although she was familiar with only one of them, whom she identified as Dr Arif. Imran has previously received treatment at Pims following the diagnosis of right central retinal vein occlusion, an eye condition identified earlier this year. The Supreme Court had directed authorities to arrange Imran’s medical examination while also instructing that information about his health should not be used for political purposes.

    A 71-year-old woman in China has been praised for her extraordinary courage after rescuing a drowning man who had jumped into a river during an apparent suicide attempt. The remarkable incident, which took place in Suixi County in Anhui Province, has attracted widespread attention after authorities identified the elderly rescuer through CCTV footage. According to local reports, the incident occurred on July 13, when a man in his 30s jumped from a bridge into the river after reportedly struggling with family-related problems. Witnesses nearby quickly realized someone had fallen into the water, creating panic among those gathered at the scene. Among the bystanders was Liu Defang, a 71-year-old retired woman who was talking with friends near the bridge. As soon as she heard people shouting that someone was in the river, she rushed toward the riverbank without hesitation. Grabbing a floating rescue aid, she immediately jumped into the water to reach the struggling man. Liu later explained that she initially believed the person in the water was a child. However, after swimming closer, she discovered it was an adult man. Despite trying to rescue him, the man resisted because he reportedly did not want to be saved. Even so, Liu held onto him firmly and refused to let go. The rescue proved extremely challenging. Battling strong currents and exhaustion, Liu spent nearly 20 minutes keeping the man afloat before managing to guide him toward the riverbank. Once they reached shallow water, two nearby individuals helped pull the man safely onto dry land. After ensuring the man was safe, Liu quietly left the area without seeking recognition or praise. She later said she did not consider her actions extraordinary and chose not to tell her family because she did not want them to worry about the risks she had taken. Police later searched the surrounding area using CCTV footage to identify the mystery rescuer. After the videos were shared online, Liu’s older brother recognized her and contacted authorities, bringing her inspiring story to public attention. Liu Defang learned swimming after retirement and regularly practices yoga to stay active. Her bravery and quick response have earned admiration across China, with many people describing her as a true hero whose selfless actions saved a life when every second mattered.
