Gold prices edge lower in Pakistan as global rates decline

KARACHI: Gold prices recorded a modest decline in Pakistan on Saturday, with the domestic market following a slight downward movement in international bullion rates.

According to data released by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association, the price of gold fell by Rs500 per tola, bringing the price to Rs459,936 per tola.

The association reported a corresponding decline in the price of 10 grams of gold. The rate for 10 grams was reduced by Rs429, settling at Rs394,320.

The decrease in domestic gold prices came as international bullion rates also moved lower. In the global market, gold fell by $5 per ounce to $4,375 per ounce.

Market participants closely monitor international gold prices, currency movements and domestic demand when determining bullion rates in Pakistan. Changes in the international market can have a direct impact on local prices, particularly when combined with fluctuations in the exchange rate.

Gold remains a popular investment and savings instrument in Pakistan, where consumers and investors closely track daily changes in bullion prices. Jewellery demand, inflation expectations and movements in global financial markets can also influence local buying and selling activity.

The latest reduction, however, was relatively limited, indicating that the domestic bullion market remained broadly stable despite the decline in international prices.

    PCB unveils major domestic cricket overhaul ahead of ODI World Cup

    LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a significant revamp of its 2026–27 domestic cricket season, introducing structural changes aimed at strengthening competition and preparing players for the upcoming ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. The new domestic calendar places greater emphasis on high-quality white-ball cricket while also reshaping Pakistan’s premier first-class competition to improve competitiveness across all formats. According to the PCB, the season will begin on August 11 in Multan with the National Champions Cup, a four-team one-day tournament. Squads for the competition will be selected by the national selection committee, providing emerging players with an opportunity to impress in the 50-over format ahead of the global tournament. The board has also confirmed that the domestic season will feature two List A competitions. Following the National Champions Cup, teams will compete in the President’s Cup, giving players additional match practice and selectors a broader pool of performances to evaluate before international assignments. One of the biggest changes announced is the expansion of regional participation. The number of regional teams has increased from 18 to 20, with Sialkot and Peshawar each receiving permission to field a second team. PCB officials believe the move will create more opportunities for talented cricketers across the country and deepen the domestic talent pipeline. In another landmark decision, the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy has been divided into Gold and Silver Divisions for the first time in the tournament’s history. The Gold Division will feature the country’s eight strongest teams, while the Silver Division will include 12 teams competing for promotion and a chance to challenge the top sides. Both divisions are scheduled to begin on November 1, with the new format designed to increase the quality and intensity of first-class cricket.     Mohammad Nawaz ruled out of Champions Cup

    Pakistan’s spin-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has been ruled out of the National Champions Cup after suffering a fracture to the middle finger of his right hand. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the injury on Friday, revealing that Nawaz is expected to remain away from competitive cricket for at least three weeks. Nawaz sustained the injury while fielding during the National Champions Cup match between Pakistan Gold and Pakistan Blues at Multan Cricket Stadium on August 12. Despite hurting his finger, the experienced all-rounder remarkably completed his full 10-over spell. His efforts, however, could not prevent Pakistan Gold from suffering a six-wicket defeat against Pakistan Blues. Medical scans conducted on August 13 confirmed the fracture, forcing Nawaz to withdraw from the ongoing domestic competition.     Pakistan clarifies Afghan deportation policy

    Pakistan has clarified that Afghan citizens with valid visas and travel documents have not been expelled from the country. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said the government was following a legal process regarding Afghan nationals staying in Pakistan. Addressing the weekly press briefing, Andrabi said cases of around 89,000 Afghan citizens were currently being reviewed under the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan (IFRP). He explained that the process was being carried out according to established procedures and legal requirements. The spokesperson added that Pakistan was also providing humanitarian relief by extending the stay of nearly 16,000 Afghan nationals. The extension applies mainly to vulnerable groups, including women, children and elderly citizens, he said. Commenting on reports of an incident near the Chitral border areas, Andrabi said the Foreign Office had no confirmed information about the matter. He stated that reports coming from Afghanistan needed proper verification at the ground level before any official response could be given. The spokesperson stressed that Pakistan would avoid commenting on unverified reports and would share information only after confirmation from reliable sources.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi confronted a police officer after his security staff were stopped at the Supreme Court gate on Tuesday. The incident occurred when an Islamabad police officer asked members of the chief minister’s security team to have their bags checked before entering the premises. The staff initially attempted to proceed without getting the bags scanned. The police officer stopped them and insisted that the security check be completed. The exchange between the police officer and the chief minister’s staff turned into a verbal argument. The situation caught the attention of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who turned back after noticing the dispute. Afridi then spoke directly to the police officer. During the conversation, the chief minister questioned whether police personnel were taught humanity during their training. The police officer maintained that the security staff were required to have their bags checked. Following the officer’s insistence, the chief minister’s staff eventually complied and had their bags scanned. The incident took place amid heightened security arrangements at the Supreme Court. Security personnel routinely check visitors, staff and belongings before allowing entry into sensitive government premises. The brief confrontation ended after the required security screening was completed.

    RAWALPINDI: Ambassador of Spain to Pakistan, H.E. Carlos Aragón Gil de la Serna, visited the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI) and held a meeting with RCCI President Usman Shaukat to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral economic, trade and cultural relations between Pakistan and Spain. Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Coordinator to the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, was also present as the chief guest on the occasion. Senior Vice President Khalid Farooq Qazi, Vice President Fahad Barlas, former presidents of RCCI, Executive Committee members and a large number of Chamber members also attended the meeting. Upon their arrival, the Spanish Ambassador and Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan were warmly welcomed by RCCI President Usman Shaukat and members of the Chamber. RCCI President Usman Shaukat highlighted the significant potential for expanding Pakistan–Spain trade and called for stronger business-to-business linkages, improved market access, and enhanced cooperation in investment and technology. He said Spain offers important opportunities for Pakistani exporters, particularly in textiles and agro-based products, while Pakistan can benefit from Spanish expertise in modern agriculture, precision farming, irrigation, mechanization, greenhouse technology and water management. The discussion assumes added significance in light of recent Pakistan–Spain consultations regarding the establishment of a Joint Working Group on Agriculture. Pakistan has identified rice, ethanol, potatoes and maize as products with potential for increased exports to the Spanish market. Spain has also acknowledged Pakistan’s favourable trade balance, with textiles being among Pakistan’s major exports to Spain. On this occasion, Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan highlighted RCCI’s important role in supporting the government on economic and budget-related matters and appreciated the Chamber’s contribution towards strengthening Pakistan’s economic foundations. He said Pakistan is moving forward across various sectors, particularly information technology, and stressed the need to further promote investment, innovation and entrepreneurship. Rana Mashhood said the Prime Minister’s Vision 2047 provides a roadmap for building a prosperous, self-reliant and globally competitive Pakistan. He emphasized that youth empowerment, employment generation, peace and economic stability are essential priorities for the country’s sustainable development. He added that Pakistan’s young population represents a major national asset and that greater opportunities for skills development, entrepreneurship and employment are needed to fully harness its potential. He also appreciated the growing economic and diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Spain, saying stronger cooperation with European countries can create new opportunities for Pakistani businesses, exporters and young entrepreneurs.
