Govt decreases petrol by Re1, raises diesel by Rs3…

The government on Monday decreased the price of petrol by Re1 while increasing high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs3.37 per litre, passing on the impact of fluctuating global oil prices amid renewed hostilities in the Persian Gulf .

Following the changes, the price of petrol now stands at Rs334.18 per litre, while HSD is priced at Rs386.83 per litre . The government is currently charging a total of Rs110 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs96 on diesel, according to official notifications . The new prices took effect on July 28 (Tuesday) .

The diesel price had previously peaked at Rs520.35 on April 3 after beginning its upward trajectory from Rs266 in the first week of March .

Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would now be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US . The government had been announcing weekly revisions since early March, alongside conservation measures amid possible oil supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East . In April, the federal government also announced targeted relief measures to provide subsidised fuel .

The petroleum minister stated that the cabinet and prime minister had decided to give the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of deciding fuel prices daily based on international market trends .

The daily pricing decision was rejected by the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which said it would consider a protest plan this week .

She questioned why the city still lacked an effective public transport system and why municipal authorities struggled to manage waste collection. Comparing the performance of the Punjab and Sindh governments, Bukhari highlighted several initiatives launched under Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, including public transport projects, the provision of laptops and scholarships to students, air ambulance services, improved drainage equipment and development schemes across the province. She also pointed to projects in southern Punjab, including public transport initiatives and the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Hospital, arguing that the region had received greater attention under the PML-N government. Bukhari further criticised the PPP’s record on education, saying students in Sindh continued to raise concerns over access to educational opportunities, while the Punjab government had expanded scholarship and laptop programmes for young people. She also defended the Punjab government’s response to heavy rainfall, saying authorities had equipped the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) with modern machinery to deal with urban flooding and drainage challenges. Bukhari invited Bilawal to visit Punjab and see its development projects firsthand, saying he should compare the performance of the two provinces before criticising Punjab’s infrastructure. Turning to the AJK election results, she said the people had clearly expressed their preference through their votes and urged all political parties to accept the outcome rather than question the public’s choice.

    PESHAWAR: The Directorate of Youth Affairs, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has launched the “Ikhtiyar Awam Ka” Complaint Cell across all districts of the province, providing citizens with a dedicated platform to register complaints, submit suggestions and seek information regarding youth-related services through their respective District Youth Offices. The initiative has been introduced to promote transparency, accountability and effective public engagement while ensuring timely redressal of complaints related to youth affairs and government services. Director Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abbas Khan Afridi said the establishment of the complaint cell reflects the government’s commitment to responsive governance and citizen-centric service delivery. “The Directorate of Youth Affairs is committed to ensuring that every citizen has direct access to our services. The ‘Ikhtiyar Awam Ka’ Complaint Cell will strengthen communication between the public and the Directorate, enabling us to address complaints promptly and improve the quality of services through public feedback,” Mr Afridi said. He said citizens from every district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could contact their respective District Youth Offices through the designated helpline numbers to register complaints, report issues, share recommendations and obtain information about youth development programmes. Mr Afridi added that every complaint received through the complaint cell would be handled with transparency, responsibility and within a defined timeframe to ensure accountability and public confidence. The complaint cell has been established in all district youth offices across Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Buner, Shangla, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Malakand, Chitral Upper, Chitral Lower, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, North Waziristan, South Waziristan Upper, South Waziristan Lower, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Karak, Kohat, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Kolai-Palas Kohistan, where citizens can connect through the officially designated helplines. Officials said the initiative would strengthen public trust, improve institutional accountability and ensure efficient delivery of youth-related services across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said the nation demonstrated unity when India attempted to threaten Pakistan.       LAHORE: Five people were killed and another was injured in a tragic road accident on Lahore’s Canal Road after a speeding car reportedly went out of control and struck two pedestrians before crashing into a utility pole and a tree. According to Rescue 1122, the accident occurred on Canal Road near Harbanspura in Lahore. The incident claimed the lives of three young people travelling in the car as well as two pedestrians who were walking along the roadside. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the car was allegedly performing drifting on the road when he lost control of the vehicle. The car reportedly mounted the footpath alongside the canal and struck two young pedestrians. It then continued moving before crashing into an electricity pole and a tree. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in multiple fatalities. Three occupants of the vehicle died at the scene, while two pedestrians also lost their lives as a result of being hit by the speeding car. An 11-year-old boy who was travelling in the car was injured in the accident. Rescue teams reached the site after receiving information about the crash and began rescue and emergency operations. The injured child was shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. According to information available after the incident, the four people travelling in the car were cousins. The victims were reportedly young, with the ages of those who died ranging between 15 and 18 years. A report regarding the circumstances before the accident stated that the four boys had allegedly left their home around 6am while their family members were still asleep. They reportedly took the car and went out, after which the fatal accident occurred on Canal Road. The incident has raised concerns about dangerous driving and the risks associated with speeding and performing stunts on public roads. Drifting, particularly at high speed and on busy roads, can result in a driver losing control of a vehicle within seconds. The consequences can be devastating not only for the occupants of the vehicle but also for pedestrians and other road users. Canal Road is an important route in Lahore and carries significant traffic throughout the day. Although the accident occurred early in the morning, the presence of pedestrians near the roadside made the situation particularly dangerous. The deaths of the young people have caused grief among their families and relatives. The fact that the victims were reportedly teenagers has added to the tragedy, while the two pedestrians who were also killed became unintended victims of the alleged reckless driving.
