Govt decreases petrol by Re1, raises diesel by Rs3…

The government on Monday decreased the price of petrol by Re1 while increasing high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs3.37 per litre, passing on the impact of fluctuating global oil prices amid renewed hostilities in the Persian Gulf .

Following the changes, the price of petrol now stands at Rs334.18 per litre, while HSD is priced at Rs386.83 per litre . The government is currently charging a total of Rs110 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs96 on diesel, according to official notifications . The new prices took effect on July 28 (Tuesday) .

The diesel price had previously peaked at Rs520.35 on April 3 after beginning its upward trajectory from Rs266 in the first week of March .

Earlier, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices would now be fixed on a daily basis due to fluctuations in international market prices following renewed hostilities between Iran and the US . The government had been announcing weekly revisions since early March, alongside conservation measures amid possible oil supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East . In April, the federal government also announced targeted relief measures to provide subsidised fuel .

The petroleum minister stated that the cabinet and prime minister had decided to give the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the responsibility of deciding fuel prices daily based on international market trends .

The daily pricing decision was rejected by the All Pakistan Dealers Association, which said it would consider a protest plan this week .

He described PTUT as a rapidly progressing institution and reiterated his vision of transforming the UO into a smart university through the integration of cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Akram emphasized that AI has the potential to significantly enhance efficiency across teaching, research, governance, and administrative functions. He noted that intelligent AI agents can help universities streamline routine processes, improve decision-making, and deliver better services to students and faculty. The meeting concluded with an understanding that PTUT will submit a formal proposal for the transfer and implementation of the AI technology at the University of Okara. The proposal will be reviewed by the University’s relevant authorities and statutory bodies, and any future implementation will be subject to the completion of all required approvals.

    ANKARA: Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are set to establish new political and military coordination mechanisms following the signing of a landmark joint defence agreement, as the three countries move to strengthen strategic cooperation amid growing security concerns in the region. Türkiye’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday that the framework agreed by the three countries would bring senior political and military leadership into a structured mechanism aimed at enhancing coordination on defence and security matters. The three nations signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, marking a significant development in their security relations. The agreement comes at a time of heightened tensions across the Middle East, with the escalation of regional hostilities raising security concerns among Gulf states and other countries in the region. Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack against all members. The provision establishes a collective-defence commitment similar in principle to the collective security arrangement contained in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). High-level political and military coordination According to the Turkish Defence Ministry, the new mechanisms will involve the defence ministers, foreign ministers and military chiefs of Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The arrangement is expected to provide the three countries with a regular platform for consultations on regional security developments, defence policy and potential threats. While Independence Day is traditionally marked with flags, decorations, patriotic songs and family gatherings, the use of firearms during celebrations has repeatedly turned festive occasions into dangerous situations. Authorities have consistently warned citizens against aerial firing. Despite these warnings and existing restrictions, celebratory gunfire continues to occur during major occasions such as Independence Day and New Year’s Eve. Police also launched a crackdown against people allegedly involved in aerial firing in different parts of Karachi. People who are completely unaware of the firing can be struck while standing outside, travelling through the city or even staying inside their homes. The latest incident also comes after a similarly tragic Independence Day last year. In 2025, three people, including a minor girl, were killed and more than 100 others were injured in celebratory gunfire across Karachi. Authorities subsequently arrested suspects and recovered illegal weapons. What some people consider a form of celebration can result in permanent injuries, loss of life and lasting trauma for innocent families. Independence Day is meant to celebrate Pakistan’s freedom and national identity. However, the injuries reported in Karachi serve as a painful reminder that celebrations should never put other people’s lives at risk. As authorities continue efforts to control aerial firing, citizens are also being urged to celebrate responsibly.
