How Lahore’s historic Neela Gumbad is emerging from decades of clutter

For generations of Lahoris, the name Neela Gumbad (Blue Dome) referred to a bustling commercial center. The kind of place you visited to purchase a bicycle, repair a motor tire, or navigate a maze of auto parts shops.  Behind Anarkali Bazaar, the name itself felt almost metaphoric, as the physical blue dome was impossible to see from the main street. The location was swallowed whole by decades of unregulated commercial expansion, illegal encroachments, dangling electrical wires, and storefronts. One of Lahore’s most significant 17th-century heritage landmarks had been completely erased from the public eye. Now, a major initiative led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz under the government’s heritage restoration project is finally breathing new life into the centuries-old monument.

The history of Neela Gumbad records back to 1673 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The complex was constructed as the final resting place and shrine for the venerated Sufi saint Sheikh Abdul Razzaq (often referred to as Abdur Razzaq Makki).  The tomb earned its famous moniker from Central Asian-style blue glazed tiles that adorned its central dome.

However, as Lahore expanded into a modern metropolis throughout the 20th century, the historic shrine fell victim to severe urbanisation. The area around the tomb transformed into the infamous Neela Gumbad Cycle Market. Bulky, multi-story cycle shops, workshops, and illegal extensions were constructed directly against the shrine’s perimeter walls. Over time, the once-spacious courtyard and surrounding greenery vanished. Therefore, reducing the ancient monument to a claustrophobic nook completely hidden by concrete, rusted signboards and traffic congestion. Visitors to the area could spend hours in the market without realizing that a 350-year-old Mughal-era tomb stood there behind the shops.

The ongoing restoration effort is radically altering the landscape of the area. To restore the monument’s historical dignity, the provincial government initiated a massive clearance operation. Recognizing the economic impact on local merchants, millions of rupees in compensation checks were distributed to dozens of affected shopkeepers and property owners surrounding the shrine prior to the clearance. Heavy machinery was then brought in to demolish the encroaching structures, exposing the weathered brickwork and original arches of the Neela Gumbad complex for the first time in nearly half a century.

The project goes beyond simply tearing down illegal shops. It represents a comprehensive attempt at placemaking. It reclaims public spaces for citizens while preserving historical identity.

The vision for the site includes a multi-level subterranean parking facility designed to permanently solve the chronic traffic congestion along Mall Road and Anarkali. The space surrounding the shrine is being converted into an open-air public piazza with pedestrian walkways, seating, green spaces, and night lighting. This plan will allow sightings of the blue dome from the main road once again. To preserve the historic commercial identity without compromising the architecture, bicycle vendors are being provided organized spaces within new facilities nearby. Specialized conservationists are working to restore the crumbling brickwork, repair structural damage, and revive the signature blue tiles of the shrine’s dome.

As heavy excavators continue clearing debris around the site, the historic silhouette of Neela Gumbad is once again visible. This ongoing revival project serves as a case for how South Asian megacities can reclaim their historic souls.

Nepal consistently ranks highest in South Asia on global press freedom indices, supported by a constitution that explicitly guarantees press rights without prior restraint. However, challenges persist regarding local government transparency, criminal defamation provisions, and proposed social media regulation bills that civil society groups fear could introduce licensing hurdles for digital outlets.  Afghanistan Direct directives issued by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice and the Ministry of Information and Culture. Following the political shift in 2021, independent journalism in Afghanistan has faced near-total suppression. Women journalists are largely banned from broadcasting, international news services face widespread blocking, and all local reporting is subject to strict pre-publication censorship. Common Trends Across the Region Across South Asia, governments are increasingly shifting control from traditional print/broadcast regulators toward cybersecurity, online safety, and data protection laws to monitor digital newsrooms and independent creators. Constitutional guarantees of free speech throughout South Asia uniformly contain broad public order and national defense exceptions, which states routinely cite to enforce reporting restrictions during regional crises. Beyond direct legal action, states across the region frequently utilize non-judicial levers such as withholding state advertising funds, slow-walking accreditation, or requiring special travel permits to shape editorial stances.

  • Scientists use sharks to improve hurricane forecasts

    Scientists at the University of Delaware in the United States are investigating whether sharks can be used to improve predictions of hurricane intensity and serve as ocean-observing systems for collecting marine data. Researchers at the University of Delaware are attaching sensors to sharks that measure ocean temperature, electrical conductivity and depth. Electrical conductivity is related to the amount of salt in the water. According to Aaron Carlisle, a professor at the university’s School of Marine Science and Policy and the lead researcher of the study, animal-mounted sensors have been successfully used in marine research for several years particularly in areas where scientific observations are limited. Researchers say sharks are suitable for this research because they are abundant, inhabit vast areas of the ocean and are relatively easier to access than many protected marine mammals. So far, shark tagging has mainly been used to study their movements and habitats. However, in this new research, scientists are selecting sharks that can collect useful data for hurricane forecasting and swim close enough to the ocean surface for their tags to transmit information via satellites. Preliminary analyses in the North Atlantic have identified shortfin mako sharks, blue sharks, smooth hammerhead sharks and juvenile great white sharks as suitable species for the research. According to Aaron Carlisle, scientists are paying particular attention to the heat in the upper layer of the ocean known as the “mixed layer.” This layer of water plays an important role in the intensity of hurricanes because a warmer mixed layer can contribute to the formation of stronger hurricanes. Caroline Wiernicki, a doctoral student at the University of Delaware said the shark-tagging process begins in early May, when several migratory shark species come closer to the coast after spending the winter in remote areas of the Atlantic Ocean. Researchers travel 50 to 65 kilometres offshore in a research vessel where they deploy baited lines and typically wait two to three hours for sharks to approach. A tag is attached to the shark’s dorsal fin. When the shark swims near the surface, the tag connects with a network of satellite receivers and transmits data. Carlisle said the tagging process is completed rapidly similar to a “pit crew” during a motor race and usually takes less than five minutes. Shark tagging is carried out under institutional animal-care oversight to minimize its impact on the animals. The tags are attached using materials that gradually dissolve and eventually detach on their own. Before each shark is released back into the ocean, its health is examined because stress or injury could affect its natural behaviour and consequently, the reliability of the data collected. Caroline Wiernicki said sharks are portrayed as extremely frightening animals in movies whereas in reality they are relatively calm creatures. According to the researchers, if the project proves successful, data collected from sharks could help improve forecasts of the intensity of hurricanes approaching the US East Coast. This information could provide more reliable forecasts to coastal communities from North Carolina to Massachusetts helping them prepare for storms and improve coastal protection. Aaron Carlisle said sharks are remarkable animals that are exceptionally well adapted to life in the ocean and there is much that humans can learn from them. If it is proven that sharks can also benefit humans, it would be a win-win situation for both.

  • Gustav Klimt’s “Lakeshore with Birches” (1901)

    Gustav Klimt’s Lakeshore with Birches (Seeufer mit Birken, 1901) presents a contemplative immersion into nature. This piece was painted during a crucial transitional moment in Klimt’s artistic development. It was completed when Klimt spent his summers away from the urban noise of Vienna at Lake Attersee. This work captures the quiet rhythm of the natural world, distilled through a distinctly modern visual sensitivity. What immediately distinguishes Lakeshore with Birches is its unorthodox composition. Rather than offering a traditional panorama with a distant horizon line, Klimt deliberately truncates the viewer’s field of vision. The composition is anchored by a singular birch trunk rising vertically near the center-right of the canvas. Klimt creates a radical sense of spatial compression by eliminating the sky. The landscape is flattened into a decorative field, where depth is suggested through subtle layering. A lush, wild embankment dotted with small yellow and purple wildflowers. The stark pale birch trunk with its rhythmic dark lenticels, acting as a structural mast. In the background, still water reflecting the dark foliage of the far shore. This croppings draws inspiration from both Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and contemporary square-format photography. The canvas forces the viewer to engage with the textures and moods of the immediate environment. The atmosphere of the painting is dictated by a restrained palette. Dominated by muted moss greens, deep olive tones, and dark murky browns, the water acts as a mirror absorbing the weight of the forest shadows. Against this dark, reflective pool, the small specks of yellow buttercups and delicate purples along the grass introduce a subtle optical vibration. Klimt’s brushwork here bridges French Impressionist techniques and the emerging principles of Art Nouveau. The bank is rendered using tiny, stippled dabs of paint, creating a tapestry-like surface pattern. Up close, the reflections on the water resolve into abstract patches of blue, gray, and dark brown. The slender birch tree provides a crisp, pale contrast. Its bark painted with precise horizontal dashes that echo the linear motifs Klimt would later deploy in his famous Golden Phase. Beyond its formal qualities, Lakeshore with Birches radiates profound stillness. Free from human figures or dramatic narrative.  Turns nature into a psychological sanctuary. The solitary birch trunk stands almost like a quiet observer at the edge of the water. It seems like a subtle proxy for the solitary painter himself. During his summer retreats at the Attersee, Klimt used landscape painting as a palette cleanser, freeing himself from the contentious public commissions and psychological weight of his Viennese portraiture. In Lakeshore with Birches, he captures the fleeting light and quiet isolation of late summer. He converted a humble patch of lakeside grass and water into an intricate sanctuary of pattern and color. It remains a testament to Klimt’s unique ability to merge acute observation with abstract harmony.

The strong smell may help discourage lizards from coming into these areas. Keep the House clean Home remedies alone may not be enough.  Keeping your house clean is one of the best ways to reduce lizard visits. Avoid leaving food uncovered and clean crumbs or leftover food quickly. It is also important to control insects because mosquitoes flies and other small bugs are a major food source for lizards. By keeping the home clean reducing insects and blocking possible entry points you can make your home less attractive to lizards.

  • 3 Minutes of running may boost health

    Want to lower your risk of obesity type 2 diabetes and other long term health problems as you get older?  A new study suggests that even a few minutes of running each day may trigger important changes in the body. Researchers at Rockefeller University found that short bursts of running can cause major changes in the body that may not happen in the same way after longer periods of moderate exercise. The study analyzed health data from more than 53,000 people. Researchers found that six short bursts of running each lasting about 30 seconds, could quickly change the levels of nearly one quarter of the proteins measured in the blood. Short runs trigger changes in the body The researchers found that running affected more than 200 metabolites which are substances produced during the body’s chemical processes. Short intense exercise also increased certain proteins linked to blood vessel function tissue repair and hormone signaling. Some of these proteins can help send signals through the bloodstream and may support better blood flow. Running may support metabolic health The study also looked at how fat cells respond after running. Researchers found noticeable changes in these cells following short periods of exercise. Interestingly 90 minutes of moderate exercise did not produce the same immediate response seen after the short running sessions. The researchers believe that the proteins activated by running may be linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular and metabolic problems. These changes may be especially useful in reducing the risk of conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Exercise intensity may matter One important finding was that the body’s response was not simply about exercising for a long time.  The intensity of the activity appeared to have a strong effect on certain proteins. Researchers also observed similar responses during an eight week training period, suggesting that these changes may not be limited to a single workout. The findings highlight an encouraging message you may not need a long workout to get your body moving. Even short bursts of running can trigger powerful biological responses. However people with health conditions or those who are not used to intense exercise should start gradually and seek medical advice when needed.

  • Human fridge cools in minutes

    As temperatures in Japan climb to 38°C and the government issues heatstroke warnings two Japanese companies have introduced an unusual solution to help people stay cool a personal “human fridge.” The device is a portable cooling box made of stainless steel. A person sits inside on a built in chair while powerful cold air is blown around the head neck shoulders and back. According to the companies this can lower the body’s temperature by up to 5°C helping users cool down quickly. The cooling box keeps the inside temperature at 15°C and automatically turns off after 20 minutes For safety. The unit measures 84 inches tall and 47 inches wide. It uses less electricity than a traditional air conditioner with an estimated operating cost of 16 yen per hour. The companies say the device cools the entire body faster than a regular AC and is easy to move from one place to another. It is designed for locations where people work outdoors or in very hot conditions. According to the manufacturers users begin to feel noticeably cooler within five minutes and spending around 10 minutes inside may help reduce the effects of extreme heat and heatwave symptoms.
