Ishaq Dar arrives in Manila for ASEAN Forum

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in Manila, Philippines, on Wednesday to attend the 33rd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting. The visit reflects Pakistan’s continued engagement with regional and international partners on key political, economic, and security issues.

Dar reached Manila with a high-level delegation. During his visit, he will participate in the ARF plenary session and hold several bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and senior officials from participating countries. These meetings are expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic ties, expanding economic cooperation, and discussing regional developments.

Upon his arrival, Dar was welcomed by senior officials of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Philippines Asima Rabbani, and officials of the Pakistani Embassy.

The ASEAN Regional Forum is one of the region’s most important diplomatic gatherings. It brings together foreign ministers and senior representatives from ASEAN member states and partner countries to discuss peace, security, and regional cooperation.

This year’s meeting will focus on several pressing international issues. Participants will exchange views on growing geopolitical tensions, regional security challenges, energy security, food supply concerns, trade cooperation, and the impact of ongoing global conflicts.

The situation in Myanmar will also be high on the agenda. Leaders are expected to review efforts to implement ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and discuss ways to support peace and stability in the country.

The continuing tensions between the United States and Iran are also expected to feature prominently during discussions. Delegates will assess the impact of the conflict on regional security, global energy markets, and international trade.

Senior diplomats from major world powers are attending the forum. These include representatives from the United States, China, India, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. The meeting provides an opportunity for bilateral engagements and dialogue on shared global challenges.

ASEAN countries are also expected to discuss measures to strengthen regional energy cooperation. Member states are exploring ways to improve oil-sharing mechanisms to reduce the impact of possible disruptions in global energy supplies.

NewJeans’ fourth anniversary comeback sparks fan concern

K-pop girl group NewJeans celebrated their fourth debut anniversary by releasing new promotional content, raising speculation about a possible four-member comeback after nearly two years away from the music scene. At midnight on July 22 (KST), the group unveiled a series of summer-themed videos and photos under the title “2026 Summer of NewJeans.” The newly released content featured Hanni, Haerin, Minji and Hyein, marking the group’s first official update together in a long time. The release also confirmed Minji’s return to group activities following months of uncertainty. However, Danielle was absent from the anniversary content after officially leaving the agency at the end of 2025. The cheerful summer concept has led many fans to believe that NewJeans may finally be preparing for a long-awaited musical comeback. Although no official announcement about a new album or single has been made, the timing of the promotional campaign has fuelled excitement across social media. Despite the anticipation surrounding the group’s return, the new photos and videos also sparked mixed reactions among fans. While many welcomed seeing the members together again, others expressed concern over their appearance and questioned whether the group was genuinely happy. Several fans claimed that the members looked unhappy in the promotional images, with some describing the content as rushed and lacking the group’s usual energy. Social media users shared comments suggesting the members appeared exhausted, while others said the videos did not reflect the bright and lively image NewJeans had been known for since their debut. The group’s activities have remained uncertain since the highly publicised legal dispute involving their agency, ADOR, and its former CEO Min Hee-jin. The conflict dominated headlines throughout 2025 and significantly affected NewJeans’ career, forcing the members to pause group promotions for an extended period. A major legal development came when a Seoul court ruled that the members’ exclusive contracts with ADOR remained legally valid. Following the ruling, Hanni, Haerin and Hyein gradually resumed activities with the agency, while discussions regarding Minji’s future also progressed positively before her eventual return. Danielle, however, officially ended her contract with the company and continues to face an ongoing legal dispute related to damages claimed by the agency. Soon after NewJeans released their anniversary content, Danielle shared a new post on Instagram that quickly attracted widespread attention. Alongside a selfie, she wrote an uplifting message about hope, resilience and staying grateful even during difficult times. Fans also noticed that Danielle was wearing a cap with the word “REVENGE” printed across it. The detail immediately sparked speculation online, with many wondering whether the choice of clothing carried a hidden message related to her former agency or the ongoing legal battle. However, Danielle has not commented on the meaning behind the cap, and there is no confirmation that it was intended as a reference to the dispute. As NewJeans celebrate four years since their debut, fans remain divided between excitement over the possibility of new music and concern about the challenges the members have faced. Until an official comeback announcement is made, speculation surrounding the group’s future is likely to continue.

Israel won’t leave Gaza until Hamas disarms, Pea…

JERUSALEM: Israeli forces will not withdraw from the Gaza Strip until Hamas is fully disarmed, according to Nikolay Mladenov, following high-level talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The remarks came after a meeting in West Jerusalem between Mladenov, who heads the US-backed Board of Peace, and Netanyahu, where the two sides discussed the future of Gaza, regional security and the implementation of a proposed peace framework. According to a statement issued by the Board of Peace, reports suggesting that Israel had agreed to withdraw from Gaza before Hamas is disarmed are inaccurate. The organization stressed that the Israeli military’s withdrawal would only take place once Hamas had surrendered all of its weapons, including both light and heavy arms, and dismantled its network of underground tunnels. “The objective is clear and leaves no room for ambiguity,” the Board of Peace said in a statement shared on social media. It added that the long-term goal is the complete removal of weapons from the Gaza Strip and the transition toward civilian governance capable of maintaining stability and security. The meeting also highlighted concerns raised by Israeli political leaders regarding the peace initiative recently announced by the US president. While details of the proposal have not been fully disclosed, Israeli officials reportedly voiced reservations about aspects of the plan during discussions with Mladenov. Meanwhile, Hamas rejected the latest position, insisting that implementation of any agreement would remain impossible unless Israel fulfills its own obligations under the proposed framework. The group argued that both parties must comply with agreed commitments for any lasting ceasefire or political settlement to succeed. According to a news agency report citing two people familiar with the discussions, Mladenov also urged Netanyahu to halt Israeli military operations in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of reducing violence and creating conditions for diplomatic progress. Despite a ceasefire announced in October 2025, Israeli military operations in Gaza have continued, with both sides accusing each other of violating understandings reached under previous agreements. The continued fighting has complicated international efforts to revive negotiations and address the humanitarian situation in the territory. The latest statements underscore the deep divisions that continue to hinder peace efforts, with disarmament, security guarantees and governance remaining among the most contentious issues in negotiations over Gaza’s future.

Goods transporters’ strike enters sixth day as talks With government fail

The nationwide strike by goods transporters has entered its sixth consecutive day after negotiations with the federal and provincial governments failed to produce a breakthrough. President of the Goods Transporters Association Nabil Mahmood Tariq said the talks had reached a deadlock, with no agreement reached on the key demands of the transport sector. He warned that the strike would continue indefinitely unless the government addressed the concerns raised by transporters. Speaking to Geo News by telephone, Nabil Mahmood Tariq said the negotiations failed because of what he described as the government’s rigid stance. According to him, transporters are particularly concerned about frequent changes in diesel prices, which they say make it difficult to manage transportation costs and business operations. He said the government had also refused to reduce toll taxes or guarantee that existing toll rates would remain unchanged for at least one year. Transporters have maintained that rising operating expenses, including fuel and toll charges, are putting increasing pressure on the sector. The association president said the government had offered limited concessions on customs-related matters and axle-load restrictions, but the proposals were not sufficient to end the strike. He further alleged that authorities had not yet fully assessed the economic consequences of the ongoing shutdown. According to him, the impact would become more visible in the coming days if the dispute remained unresolved. The strike has already begun affecting the movement and supply of essential commodities in several parts of the country. Disruptions in the transportation of fruits and vegetables have raised concerns about shortages and further increases in prices. In Balochistan, the strike has reportedly contributed to higher prices of several food items. In Quetta, for instance, the price of chicken meat has increased from around Rs500 to Rs550 per kilogram amid supply disruptions. Meanwhile, efforts are continuing in Karachi to maintain the supply of vegetables through smaller vehicles. However, transport-sector representatives warn that such arrangements may not be sufficient to meet normal market demand if the strike continues for an extended period. The prolonged protest has raised concerns among traders, consumers and businesses that rely heavily on road transportation. Any further delay in resolving the dispute could increase pressure on supply chains and potentially push up the prices of essential goods.

Gull Feroza stars as Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in OD…

Gull Feroza and Sidra Amin’s half-centuries helped Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium on Thursday. The Green Shirts comprehensively chased down 211 in 43 overs, losing only five wickets in the process. Sadaf Shams and Gull Feroza added 58 runs for the opening wicket partnership at the end of the first powerplay, with Shams contributing 20 off 27 balls, including three fours. The highlight of Pakistan’s innings was the second-wicket stand of 90 runs off 114 balls, which made light work of the chase, taking the total to 148 in 28.5 overs. Feroza eventually departed after scoring a free-flowing 78 off 77 balls, including 11 fours. Sidra Amin continued and raised her half-century before getting castled by Inoka Ranaweera on 57, hitting five fours in her measured knock. The visitors eventually reached home in the 43rd over. For Sri Lanka, Kavisha Dilhari picked up two wickets. With their fifth ODI win in a row, Pakistan moved up to second position in the ICC Women’s Championship Points table. Earlier, Sri Lanka could not capitalise on the decision to bat first as they were limited to 210-9 in 50 overs despite a strong opening foundation. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne stitched a 56-run stand in 11 overs, with Gunaratne contributing 28 off 34 balls, hitting four boundaries. Despite the wicket, Sri Lanka carried on as Athapaththu and Hasini Perera stitched a 53-run partnership to take the total over the 100-run mark. However, once Pakistan introduced spinners, the momentum quickly shifted in their favour. The visitors removed well-set Athapaththu (46) and Perera (35) in quick succession to make a comeback. The home side could not recover after the quick wickets, losing wickets in clusters and eventually being limited to a below-par total. For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu starred with the ball, scalping three wickets in her 10 overs. The victory gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI scheduled to take place in the coming days. The team will be looking to build on this momentum and secure a series win, while Sri Lanka will aim to bounce back and level the series. Pakistan’s batting depth and bowling attack were on full display, highlighting their potential as a formidable side in the ICC Women’s Championship. The series continues to provide exciting cricketing action, with fans eagerly awaiting the next fixtures as both teams battle for supremacy in the ODI format. The win also boosts Pakistan’s position in the championship standings, keeping them in contention for a top spot as they continue their campaign. The Green Shirts will be hoping to carry this form into the remaining matches and secure a comprehensive series victory.

SSGC explains strong gas smell in Karachi

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Sunday clarified that the strong gas smell reported in several parts of Karachi, including areas near Abul Hasan Isphahani Road, did not result from a gas leak. The company said residents began reporting the unusual smell on Saturday night, raising concerns about a possible leak. However, SSGC explained that the smell came from the testing of odourisation plants during the commissioning process of a newly installed gas pipeline. According to the company, natural gas has no smell of its own. Gas distribution companies add special odorants to the supply as a safety measure so that consumers can quickly detect a potential leak. During the testing process, SSGC added a larger-than-usual quantity of the odorant, which caused the gas to produce a much stronger smell than normal. The unusual odour prompted people from different parts of Karachi to report what they believed could be a gas leak. SSGC, however, said its teams found no evidence of any leak and confirmed that the gas network was operating at normal pressure. In a media alert issued on Sunday, the company urged customers not to panic and said they could continue with their routine activities. SSGC also reassured consumers that the strong smell resulted solely from the increased amount of odorant used during the testing of the new odourisation facilities. Gas leaks can pose serious risks to public safety. Accumulated gas can cause fires and explosions, while inhaling high concentrations in enclosed spaces can lead to suffocation and death. Authorities regularly advise consumers to take immediate precautions if they detect an unusual gas smell and to report suspected leaks to the relevant gas utility. The latest clarification comes months after a tragic gas leak incident in Rawalpindi. In January, three women died from suffocation while another woman fainted after a gas leak in an apartment in Bahria Town Phase VII. SSGC’s clarification aims to reassure Karachi residents that the strong smell reported in the city was linked to the testing of its odourisation system rather than an actual gas leak.
