Italy and Denmark rally 22 EU states behind push f…

Italy and Denmark have secured the backing of 22 European Union member states for a joint push toward stronger border security, following a chaotic migrant surge into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta that left at least 19 people dead.

Thousands of migrants attempted to reach Ceuta, located on Africa’s northern coast, on Thursday, with many swimming around breakwaters using inflatable devices while others scaled the high border fence separating Morocco from the Spanish territory. Official estimates put the total number of migrants who crossed into Ceuta from Morocco at around 60,000.

The scale of the crossing prompted alarm among European leaders, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni moving quickly to temporarily suspend Italy’s open border Schengen arrangement with Spain for one month, closing direct air and sea travel from Spain without passport checks.

By Saturday, Italy had escalated its response further, joining Denmark in leading a coordinated diplomatic push. The two countries spearheaded a joint letter, signed by 22 EU member states, calling for urgent and coordinated European action on border security, deportations and human trafficking.

Meloni wrote on social media that the scenes emerging from Ceuta underscored the urgency of a unified European response to illegal immigration. She said the letter, organized together with Denmark, calls for joint efforts to reinforce external borders, combat irregular immigration, target human traffickers, improve the effectiveness of deportations and remove any incentives that encourage further illegal crossings. She added that protecting the European Union’s external borders is not the concern of a single nation but a shared responsibility across the bloc.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pushed back against the growing pressure, accusing several EU countries of a selfish, polarizing and unlawful response to the crisis. In a letter sent to Brussels, Sanchez said some European states have chosen to target Spain and push for its temporary removal from the Schengen area, driven by what he described as prejudice, misinformation, ignorance or political motives.

EU officials were scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Saturday afternoon to determine next steps in addressing the unfolding migration crisis in Ceuta.

The dispute highlights a long running fault line within the European Union over migration policy, as border states facing the brunt of new arrivals often clash with governments pushing for stricter continent wide controls, a tension that has resurfaced repeatedly during major migration episodes over the past decade.

KP unveils massive 1.4m-tree plantation drive

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has set an ambitious target of planting 1.4 million saplings in a single day as part of its Independence Day celebrations. K-P Information and Public Relations Minister Shafi Jan said the large-scale plantation drive would be conducted across the province on August 14. He described the initiative as a major step towards expanding green cover and promoting environmental protection. The minister said extensive plantation activities would be carried out across a large area in Speen Khak, with teams taking part in the campaign to meet the record target. Shafi Jan, in his Independence Day message, said August 14 was a historic occasion that reminded the nation of the sacrifices made during the Pakistan Movement. He paid tribute to the leaders who struggled for the creation of Pakistan and those who sacrificed their lives for the country. He urged citizens to renew their commitment to building a stronger, stable, prosperous and sovereign Pakistan. According to him, national development requires collective responsibility, discipline and a continued commitment to the country’s future. The minister also highlighted the role of young people in national development. He said the younger generation should follow the ideals of Allama Iqbal and contribute towards making Pakistan more self-reliant and progressive. The provincial government has introduced a digital monitoring mechanism to improve transparency in the plantation campaign. The Ehsaas Shajarkari Web Portal will be used to identify suitable plantation locations through GPS technology. The portal will also help authorities monitor plantation activities and maintain a consolidated record of the saplings planted during the campaign. Officials will be able to track plantation sites and assess progress through the digital system. Shafi Jan said the initiative was being undertaken under the direction of K-P Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. He expressed confidence that the province would achieve its target and establish a significant plantation milestone on Independence Day.

MH370 families renew search for answers as Beijing court hears appeal

Twelve years after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared without a trace, relatives of Chinese passengers returned to a Beijing court seeking answers they say they have been denied for more than a decade. The families insist that financial compensation alone cannot resolve their pain and are urging the court to focus on establishing the truth behind one of aviation’s greatest unsolved mysteries. The appeal comes after a Beijing court ruled in December that Malaysia Airlines should pay compensation of 2.9 million yuan to each of eight Chinese families. While the ruling acknowledged their loss, two families challenged the decision, arguing that it failed to address the airline’s responsibility or explain what happened to the aircraft and the 239 people on board. Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, disappeared from radar with 239 passengers and crew members. Nearly two thirds of those on board were Chinese nationals. Despite years of international search operations across the Indian Ocean, investigators have never located the aircraft’s main wreckage or recovered its flight recorders, leaving the fate of those on board unknown. The latest court hearing in Beijing was held behind closed doors, but family members gathered outside to express their frustration. Li Eryou, whose son was among the passengers, said the original court ruling left him feeling insulted because it focused only on financial compensation while ignoring the deeper questions surrounding the disappearance. Li said no one had apologized to the families during the past 12 years and argued that the case deserved to be treated as an international tragedy rather than a routine legal dispute. He believes the compensation awarded by the lower court does not reflect the seriousness of the disaster or the emotional suffering experienced by relatives who continue to live without closure. Over the years, aviation experts have proposed several possible explanations for the disappearance. Theories have included deliberate actions by the pilot, hijacking, a missile strike or a technical failure. Another widely discussed possibility suggests that a fire involving electronic equipment may have filled the cabin with smoke, causing everyone on board to lose consciousness before the aircraft continued flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel and crashed into the Indian Ocean. However, none of these theories has been confirmed because investigators have never recovered enough evidence to determine exactly what happened. The absence of definitive findings has continued to fuel uncertainty and speculation, leaving many families convinced that important questions remain unanswered. Jiang Hui, whose mother was on the missing aircraft, said the appeal is not primarily about receiving more money. Instead, he said the families want the court to establish the facts surrounding the case and examine whether Malaysia Airlines responded appropriately after the aircraft disappeared. According to Jiang, determining responsibility and uncovering the truth are far more important than the compensation itself. People from 14 different countries were on board Flight MH370, including 50 Malaysian passengers and crew members. While legal proceedings continue in China, there are currently no similar cases pending against the airline in Malaysia. Last month, the Malaysian government announced that the search for MH370 would continue until June next year. The renewed operation is being carried out by private exploration company Ocean Infinity, which has previously led several unsuccessful search missions in the southern Indian Ocean. Although earlier efforts failed to locate the aircraft, relatives remain hopeful that new technology and expanded search areas could finally provide long awaited answers. Jiang welcomed Malaysia’s decision to extend the search and urged authorities to allow families to organize their own independent search missions alongside official efforts. For many relatives, discovering what happened to Flight MH370 remains their greatest priority, believing that only the truth can finally bring closure after more than a decade of uncertainty.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day overcomes leak fears as …

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has proven that even a major piracy leak cannot slow down one of Marvel’s biggest theatrical events in years. Just hours before the highly anticipated film officially premiered, a high-quality bootleg copy reportedly surfaced online and quickly spread across X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. The leak sparked concerns that piracy could hurt the movie’s opening-day performance, with fans urged across social media to avoid spoilers and support the official theatrical release.  Despite those fears, the latest Spider-Man adventure bounced back in spectacular fashion. According to early box office figures, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned an astonishing $72 million in preview screenings, setting a new Marvel record. The figure surpassed the previous preview record of $60 million, which had been held by Avengers: Endgame since 2019. The milestone highlights the enormous excitement surrounding Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker and demonstrates that audience demand remained strong despite the piracy concerns.  Industry analysts now expect the film to deliver one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history, with projections ranging between $260 million and $280 million worldwide. If those estimates hold, Brand New Day will cement itself as one of Marvel Studios’ most successful launches ever.  The overwhelming interest is hardly surprising. The film marks Holland’s first solo Spider-Man outing since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The story follows Peter Parker as he struggles with life after Doctor Strange’s memory spell erased his identity from the world. Living in isolation, Peter faces emotional challenges while confronting dangerous new enemies in a fresh chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Marvel has also benefited from an extensive promotional campaign leading up to the release. Earlier this year, the movie’s trailer generated unprecedented online attention, becoming the biggest trailer launch in history with more than 719 million views in its first 24 hours. That record later placed it ahead of the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer, underlining just how much anticipation surrounded the Spider-Man sequel long before tickets went on sale.  The recent piracy incident nevertheless serves as another reminder of the growing challenge facing major Hollywood releases. High-profile films increasingly become targets for online leaks, forcing studios to step up security while encouraging audiences to experience blockbusters in theaters instead of through illegal copies.  For Marvel, however, the early results suggest the leak had little impact on audience enthusiasm. Instead of slowing momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung past expectations, broken a long-standing Marvel preview record, and positioned itself as one of the defining box office successes of 2026.

Pakistan, Malaysia agree to strengthen counter-terrorism and security cooperation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to deepen cooperation in security and law enforcement, with particular emphasis on intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism, drug trafficking, human smuggling and other transnational crimes. The understanding was reached during a meeting between Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Malaysian Minister of Home Affairs Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in Islamabad on Saturday. The two sides reviewed a range of issues related to bilateral security cooperation and agreed to strengthen institutional coordination between the relevant agencies of both countries. During the meeting, the ministers discussed ways to develop more effective mechanisms for exchanging intelligence and coordinating efforts against terrorist networks, narcotics trafficking and human trafficking. They also agreed to enhance cooperation aimed at preventing illegal immigration and tackling cybercrime, which has emerged as a growing challenge for law enforcement agencies worldwide. The two countries also discussed expanding collaboration in the fields of coast guard operations and professional training. Pakistan expressed interest in learning from Malaysia’s experience in strengthening maritime security and developing the capabilities of its coast guard institutions. A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to improve cooperation between Pakistan’s National Police Academy and the Royal Malaysia Police College. The initiative is expected to facilitate the exchange of expertise, training programmes and professional experiences between law enforcement personnel from the two countries. The ministers also agreed that a high-level Pakistani delegation would visit Malaysia in the near future. The proposed visit is expected to provide an opportunity to advance discussions on bilateral security cooperation and explore new areas of collaboration between the two countries. Naqvi said Pakistan attached great importance to its relations with Malaysia and was keen to further expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. He said Malaysia’s experience in the Coast Guard sector could provide valuable lessons for Pakistan and expressed confidence that the Malaysian minister’s visit would help take bilateral relations to a new level. The interior minister also highlighted the potential for increasing people-to-people contacts between Pakistan and Malaysia. He described Malaysia as one of the rapidly developing Muslim-majority countries and an attractive destination for Pakistani tourists. Naqvi stressed the importance of facilitating legitimate travel between the two countries, saying that an increase in employment opportunities and work quotas for Pakistanis in Malaysia could encourage more people to use legal channels for travelling and working abroad. Tourism promotion and the facilitation of visa procedures also formed part of the discussions. Both sides emphasized the need to make travel easier while ensuring that immigration systems remain secure and effective. The meeting comes as Pakistan and Malaysia seek to broaden cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic and economic ties, particularly in dealing with security challenges that increasingly cross national borders. Officials from Pakistan’s Interior Ministry and law enforcement institutions also attended the meeting. Participants included State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry, the Interior Secretary, Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Inspector General of the Federal Constabulary (FC), the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA), and other senior officials. The two countries are expected to continue consultations through their respective institutions, with the planned Pakistani delegation’s visit to Malaysia likely to provide further momentum to cooperation in counter-terrorism, law enforcement, immigration and maritime security.
