JI expands nationwide protest over fuel levy and i…

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) held protest sit-ins in several major cities on Monday for the second consecutive day, intensifying its campaign against high petroleum levies, rising inflation and increased utility bills.

The protests were organised in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and other cities across the country. The party said its demonstrations would continue until the government addresses its demands.

Addressing a sit-in in Lahore, JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman described the protests as the beginning of a broader nationwide movement. He said the party had prepared a strategy to expand the campaign and expressed satisfaction with the participation in different parts of the country.

JI leaders criticised the government over the growing financial burden on ordinary citizens. They argued that higher fuel-related charges have contributed to increased prices of essential goods and made household expenses more difficult to manage.

In Karachi, a JI demonstration was held outside the Governor House. Party leaders accused the government of relying excessively on petroleum levies and taxes to generate revenue.

JI Karachi women wing leader Javed Fahim called on the government either to withdraw what she described as unnecessary financial burdens or face stronger public resistance. She warned that the party could expand its sit-ins to major roads across Karachi if its demands were not accepted.

JI Karachi Emir Monem Zafar Khan said the party’s demands included a reduction in fuel prices and a forensic audit of independent power producers (IPPs).

He said controlling inflation should be among the government’s top priorities and argued that ordinary citizens were bearing the impact of rising fuel costs, electricity bills and prices of daily-use commodities.

The protests come after the government recently increased the petroleum levy on diesel by Rs1 per litre, taking it to Rs77.28. The levy on petrol remained at Rs80 per litre, while the levy on kerosene was unchanged at Rs20.36 per litre.

JI leaders said they would continue mobilising supporters across the country and would consider further expanding the protest movement if their demands were not met.

Five dead, 41 missing after Indonesia ferry catches fire

At least five people have died and 41 others remain missing after a passenger ferry caught fire while sailing off Indonesia’s Madura Island, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation. According to Indonesian authorities, the ferry was carrying at least 250 passengers and crew when the blaze erupted during its voyage from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi. The captain alerted rescue authorities after the fire broke out early in the morning. Within hours, emergency teams launched a major operation involving rescue vessels and other maritime agencies to evacuate passengers from the burning ship. Officials said the fire rapidly spread across the ferry, leaving much of the vessel engulfed in flames. Many passengers gathered at the bow and bridge while waiting for help, while others were forced to jump into the sea to escape the intense heat and thick smoke. Videos circulating on local media showed heavy black smoke rising from the ferry as passengers wearing life jackets crowded onto lifeboats. Other footage captured desperate scenes of people entering the water as rescue teams threw lifebuoys and pulled survivors aboard nearby vessels. Search and rescue teams have so far recovered five bodies and rescued a large number of passengers. However, 41 people are still unaccounted for, and the operation continues with authorities searching the surrounding waters. Officials said emergency crews responded immediately after receiving the distress call and continue to coordinate efforts to locate the missing. Medical teams are also providing treatment to survivors rescued from the sea. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Maritime authorities have launched an investigation to establish how the blaze started and whether any safety violations contributed to the incident. Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, depends heavily on ferry transport for inter-island travel.

During the meeting, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb referred to the recent discussions held in Washington, D.C., and appreciated the constructive approach adopted by both negotiating teams. He said the steady progress reflects the mutual commitment of Pakistan and the United States to deepen economic ties and expand commercial cooperation. The finance minister stressed that maintaining the current momentum in negotiations is crucial for Pakistan’s broader economic agenda. He noted that a stronger trade and investment partnership with the United States would support Pakistan’s export-led growth strategy, improve economic resilience, attract foreign investment, and create new business opportunities for companies in both countries. Aurangzeb also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank), saying enhanced financial cooperation could facilitate trade, encourage investment, and strengthen business-to-business engagement between the two countries. LHC grants bail to Libya boat tragedy suspect

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has granted post-arrest bail to Muhammad Tahir, a suspect in the Libya boat tragedy case, ruling that investigations into international human trafficking cases must be supported by credible and legally admissible evidence rather than mere suspicion. Justice Amjad Rafiq issued a detailed 10-page written verdict explaining the reasons for granting bail. The court observed that allegations of human trafficking, being an international crime, require thorough and professional investigations based on concrete evidence. The court noted that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) should have obtained evidence from abroad and sought legal assistance from relevant international authorities during the investigation. It said cooperation with foreign agencies is essential in cases involving cross-border human trafficking. According to the written order, investigators should have collected digital and documentary evidence, including WhatsApp chats, call records, bank records, travel documents and other electronic data. The court stressed that such evidence is necessary to establish the active role of an accused in an alleged trafficking network. The judgment further stated that the standard of investigation must be strong enough to legally prove an accused person’s involvement rather than relying on assumptions or incomplete evidence. The court also highlighted the need for reforms to effectively combat human trafficking. It said stronger legislation, improved investigative methods and better law enforcement mechanisms are essential to tackle organised trafficking networks. The LHC ruled that the transfer of money into a person’s bank account alone cannot be treated as proof of involvement in human trafficking. It added that suspicion, speculation or banking transactions by themselves are insufficient to establish criminal liability in such cases. The court ordered the release of Muhammad Tahir on post-arrest bail against surety bonds of Rs500,000, subject to the conditions set by the court. The case will continue in accordance with the law while further investigation proceeds.
