KARACHI: In a significant step towards improving cancer care in Pakistan, the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has established a state-of-the-art Breast Radiation Bay that promises faster, safer and completely free treatment for breast cancer patients. The new facility is expected to transform care for thousands of women by reducing treatment time while improving precision and patient safety.

Named the Bilquis and Abdul Sattar Edhi Breast Radiation Bay, the project has been developed through a joint collaboration between the Sindh government, the Patient Aid Foundation and the Edhi Foundation. Equipped with advanced tomotherapy technology worth more than Rs1 billion, the facility is in its final stages of completion and is expected to begin serving patients soon.

According to Prof. Tariq Mahmood, head of the CyberKnife Department at JPMC, the cutting-edge technology will dramatically shorten the duration of treatment. Radiation therapy that previously required 20 to 22 sessions can now be completed in just five sessions, reducing the physical and emotional burden on patients.

He explained that the new system delivers radiation with exceptional accuracy, targeting cancerous tissues while protecting healthy organs, particularly the heart. This precision is expected to improve treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of side effects, making cancer care both safer and more effective.

The Breast Radiation Bay will have the capacity to treat around 160 breast cancer patients every day, providing life-saving care to thousands annually. In addition to advanced radiotherapy, the centre will offer a complete range of diagnostic services, including mammography, biopsy, high-resolution CT imaging, and 360-degree helical radiation therapy, allowing patients to receive comprehensive care under one roof.

Medical experts say breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Pakistan, with Karachi reporting one of the country’s highest incidence rates. They stress that early detection through regular screening greatly increases the chances of successful treatment.

Doctors also urge women to seek immediate medical advice if they notice warning signs such as breast lumps, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or changes in nipple appearance. While these symptoms do not always indicate cancer, timely evaluation is essential.

Health specialists believe the new facility marks a major milestone in Pakistan’s fight against breast cancer by expanding access to world-class treatment regardless of a patient’s financial circumstances. With advanced technology, free care and greater diagnostic capacity, JPMC aims to give thousands of women a better chance at early recovery and long-term survival.

    The Anti-Corruption Department has conducted an inquiry into alleged irregularities and appointments to key positions at Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), raising questions over the appointment procedures and eligibility of several candidates. The inquiry report identified alleged violations of rules and regulations in appointments to important positions, including Director Finance, Chief Internal Auditor, Director Supply Chain, and Director Research and Clinical Audit. According to the report, a person was appointed as Director Finance despite allegedly failing to meet the prescribed eligibility criteria. The inquiry also found that the candidate who secured the top position on merit for the post of Chief Internal Auditor was allegedly overlooked. The report further stated that the appointment of the Director Supply Chain was made despite the candidate allegedly not meeting the required technical expertise criteria. Similarly, the inquiry raised objections to the appointment of the Director Research and Clinical Audit, stating that the appointee allegedly did not meet the required eligibility criteria. The Anti-Corruption Department said the appointments allegedly violated provisions of the Medical Teaching Institutions (MTI) Act and relevant rules and regulations. Based on its findings, the inquiry recommended that the disputed appointments be cancelled. The report also recommended action against the Chairman and members of the Board of Governors, along with other officials allegedly involved in the appointment process. According to the inquiry report, the disputed appointments remained in place for around three years, allegedly causing a financial loss of approximately Rs150 million to the public exchequer. The inquiry recommended recovering the alleged financial loss from the individuals responsible. The Anti-Corruption Department has also recommended verification of the educational qualifications, professional experience and certificates of the officials concerned. The verification is aimed at determining whether the documents submitted by the candidates at the time of their appointments met the prescribed criteria and were in accordance with the relevant rules. The matter has already been under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Department. A petition challenging appointments to key posts, including Director Finance, Chief Internal Auditor and Director Supply Chain, is also pending before the Peshawar High Court.

    Germany faces ICJ hearing over Nicaragua’s Gaza …

    THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ highest judicial body, has announced that it will hold public hearings in September to examine Germany’s preliminary objections in a case filed by Nicaragua over alleged violations of international law related to the occupied Palestinian territory, particularly the Gaza Strip. According to an official statement issued by the court, the hearings will take place from September 7 to September 10 at the Peace Palace in The Hague. The proceedings will focus solely on Germany’s objections to the court’s jurisdiction and the admissibility of parts of Nicaragua’s legal claims before the case can move forward on its merits. Nicaragua initiated the case on March 1, 2024, accusing Germany of breaching its obligations under the Genocide Convention, the 1949 Geneva Conventions, their Additional Protocols and other principles of international humanitarian law. The Central American nation argues that Germany has failed in its duty to help prevent genocide by continuing political, financial and military support for Israel during the conflict in Gaza. Nicaragua also claims Germany’s decision to suspend funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) contributed to worsening the humanitarian situation. According to Nicaragua, the ongoing conflict, which began in October 2023, has created what it describes as a recognized risk of genocide against the Palestinian population in Gaza, making all states party to the Genocide Convention responsible for taking preventive measures. Germany formally challenged the case on October 21, 2025, filing preliminary objections that argue the ICJ does not have jurisdiction to hear the dispute. Berlin also contends that several of Nicaragua’s claims are legally inadmissible. Under ICJ procedures, consideration of the main case has been suspended until the court decides whether it has the authority to proceed. The hearing schedule provides Germany with the first opportunity to present oral arguments on September 7, followed by Nicaragua on September 8. Germany will return for a second round on September 9, while Nicaragua will deliver its final submissions on September 10. The case is being closely watched by governments, legal experts and international human rights organizations, as the court’s eventual ruling on jurisdiction could determine whether one of the most closely followed legal disputes arising from the Gaza conflict proceeds to a full hearing on its merits.
