Kanikka Kapur’s ‘Batwara 1947’ look has fans convinced it is Kiara Advani

A fresh poster from Batwara 1947 is making waves online for a rather unexpected reason. Fans have started comparing debutant actress Kanikka Kapur’s appearance in the poster to Bollywood actress Kiara Advani.

The buzz began after the poster dropped on July 30. It featured Kanikka alongside co-star Karan Deol. The partition-era drama boasts a solid ensemble cast. This includes Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol, and Kanikka Kapur in key roles.

Almost immediately after the poster surfaced, comment sections lit up. Viewers pointed out a striking resemblance between the two actresses. In the poster, Kanikka wears a floral outfit paired with a light brown dupatta. Her makeup was kept simple and understated. That styling choice seemed to be what triggered the comparisons in the first place.

Kanikka shared the same poster on her personal Instagram account. Alongside it, she wrote a simple caption. “Watch #Batwara1947 in cinemas this Partition Day, 14th August,” she posted.

The comments under her post soon filled up with reactions from fans. One user wrote, “Congratulations @kanikkakapur I really thought it was Kiara Advani on the poster!” Another commented, “I thought it is Kiara Advani…but happy for you Kanika ji…God bless you with huge success.”

Many other users chimed in with similar observations. Kiara Advani’s name kept coming up repeatedly across the replies.

For Kanikka Kapur, Batwara 1947 marks her big Bollywood debut. Before stepping into films, she built a name for herself on television. She played the role of Suman Tiwari in Ek Duje Ke Vaaste 2. She has also worked on digital projects, including Dono, Modern Parivar, and Murderbad.

Separately, director Rajkumar Santoshi recently shared an emotional detail about the film. He revealed that Batwara 1947 was the very last film veteran actor Dharmendra watched before his death.

According to Santoshi, Dharmendra grew emotional while listening to the film’s narration. Tears welled up in his eyes as he offered his blessings for the project. Santoshi also mentioned that after watching the film, Dharmendra praised it warmly. He reportedly told the director that the film would go on to do exceptionally well.

Batwara 1947 is all set to hit cinemas on August 14, 2026, coinciding with Partition Day.

India’s Gen Z movement raises pressure on Mo…

NEW DELHI: A growing youth-led protest movement is emerging as one of the most significant political challenges to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term, with demonstrations spreading across parts of India over allegations of examination irregularities, unemployment and demands for greater government accountability. What began as an online campaign has evolved into a nationwide movement driven largely by Generation Z, reflecting mounting frustration among young Indians over limited job opportunities and concerns about the country’s education system. The movement, associated with the youth-led platform known as the “Cockroach Janata Party,” initially focused on alleged examination scandals but has since broadened into a wider campaign calling for institutional reforms and political accountability. Protesters are demanding the resignation of the country’s education minister and greater transparency in the recruitment and examination process. The demonstrations have gained further momentum following activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike and his reported forced relocation, developments that have intensified public debate and drawn fresh attention to the broader protest movement. According to international media reports, the unrest represents one of the strongest waves of public pressure faced by Modi’s government since it began its third consecutive term. Analysts say the protests highlight deeper concerns among young voters, particularly over unemployment, education and confidence in public institutions. Tensions escalated during a protest march toward Parliament, where demonstrators clashed with security forces. Official figures said at least 180 people were injured, including 118 police officers and 60 protesters, as authorities moved to disperse crowds. Mobile internet services were also suspended in several sensitive areas to prevent the spread of unrest. Observers say the movement’s rapid rise demonstrates the increasing influence of social media in mobilising young people. What started as a satirical online campaign quickly transformed into an organised street movement, giving voice to a generation that believes its economic and educational concerns have gone unanswered. Political analysts note that while the protests remain centred on education and employment, they could carry broader political implications if public dissatisfaction continues to grow. The government’s response in the coming weeks is expected to be closely watched, as it seeks to balance law and order with demands for reform. Although it remains uncertain how the movement will develop, the ongoing demonstrations underscore the growing political engagement of India’s younger generation and the challenges facing the Modi administration as it navigates rising public expectations during its third term in office.

Nadia Khan addresses divorce rumours with social media post

Pakistani television host and actress Nadia Khan has seemingly dismissed recent rumours about trouble in her marriage by sharing a photograph with her husband, Faisal Rao, on social media. The post came after several YouTubers claimed that the couple had separated, sparking widespread speculation online. Nadia Khan is one of Pakistan’s most recognisable television personalities. She has appeared in dramas including Des Pardes, Bandhan, Manzilen, Kaisi Aurat Hoon Main, Dolly Darling, Kumzarf and Aesi Hai Tanhai. She is also known for her candid opinions on the entertainment industry through programmes such as Kya Drama Hai and Rise & Shine. Beyond television, Nadia enjoys a strong digital presence through her YouTube channel, OutStyle with Nadia, and has more than 2.6 million followers on Instagram. The actress married retired Pakistan Air Force officer Faisal Rao in January 2021. Since then, the couple has been living in Karachi and has largely kept their personal life away from the public eye. Although Nadia remains active on social media, she rarely shares family-related content and has stepped away from family vlogging because of her busy schedule with Kya Drama Hai and Rise & Shine. In recent days, Nadia’s limited posts about her personal life led to speculation from several YouTube channels, which claimed that she and Faisal Rao had divorced. Among those making the claim was YouTuber Mehreen Sibtain, while other content creators also repeated similar allegations. The rumours quickly spread across social media, prompting discussion among fans. Despite the growing speculation, Nadia chose not to issue a direct statement or publicly address the claims. Instead, after the rumours gained traction online, she shared a photograph with her husband on her Instagram Story. The image, posted around six hours before Reviewit published its report, appeared to reassure followers that the couple remains together. While Nadia did not write a lengthy caption or explicitly mention the divorce rumours, many social media users interpreted the post as her response to the ongoing speculation. Fans described the picture as a subtle but effective way of putting an end to the claims without engaging in unnecessary controversy. The actress has previously maintained that she prefers to keep her personal life private despite her public career. Over the years, she has focused her online presence primarily on her professional work, television appearances and lifestyle content rather than regularly sharing details about her family life. Following the Instagram Story, many of Nadia’s followers criticised the spread of unverified rumours and urged social media users to avoid believing claims that are not confirmed by the individuals involved. The shared photograph has since been widely viewed as Nadia Khan’s way of dismissing the divorce speculation, with no evidence supporting the claims that she and Faisal Rao have ended their marriage.

Pakistan stands with Nepal after broad peak avalan…

Pakistan has expressed solidarity with Nepal following the tragic avalanche on Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range, where members of an international mountaineering expedition were caught in a deadly snow slide. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Inter-Provincial Coordination, Senator Rana Sanaullah, said Pakistan shares the grief of the Nepalese people and remains committed to supporting rescue efforts. According to Rana Sanaullah, the avalanche struck a team of 10 international climbers attempting to scale Broad Peak. The expedition included six climbers from Nepal, along with mountaineers from Pakistan, the United States, China, and Oman. He said the Government of Pakistan immediately prioritized search and rescue operations after the incident. So far, the bodies of four climbers have been recovered, including Nepalese mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung. Rescue teams continue to search for the remaining missing climbers despite difficult terrain and severe weather conditions. Rana Sanaullah stated that the Pakistan Army and other relevant agencies are carrying out extensive rescue operations using helicopters, drones, and all available resources. He noted that challenging weather and the remote mountainous landscape have made rescue efforts extremely difficult, but authorities remain fully committed to locating the missing climbers. The adviser explained that search teams are utilizing GPS tracking, aerial surveillance, and ground search missions to maximize the chances of finding those still unaccounted for. He emphasized that rescue operations will continue without interruption until every possible effort has been exhausted. Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Rana Sanaullah said Nepalese climbers, along with other international mountaineers, are highly respected in Pakistan for their contributions to global mountaineering. He added that Pakistan values its long-standing friendship with Nepal and stands with the families affected by the tragedy during this difficult time. He further reaffirmed that the government will continue to deploy all available resources until the search mission is completed. Pakistan, he said, remains committed to assisting the international climbing community and ensuring that every effort is made to locate the missing members of the expedition. The Broad Peak avalanche has once again highlighted the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering in the Karakoram, where unpredictable weather, avalanches, and challenging terrain continue to pose significant risks even to experienced climbers. Authorities have pledged to maintain rescue operations while closely monitoring weather conditions to ensure the safety of rescue personnel.

Cambridge to review hiring after Arday resignation

The University of Cambridge has announced a review of its procedures for appointing senior academics following the resignation of Professor Jason Arday amid allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding parts of his academic record. Cambridge said an ongoing investigation into Arday’s qualifications, previous appointments and tenure would inform the wider review of how senior academic positions are filled. Arday, a professor of sociology of education and fellow of Jesus College, stepped down after allegations emerged concerning his academic work and claims made about his professional background. He has rejected accusations of deliberate plagiarism and denied fabricating his achievements. The controversy has prompted calls from academics for an independent investigation into how Arday was appointed to a senior position at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Priyamvada Gopal, a Cambridge professor who is among those calling for an independent inquiry, said the controversy had caused significant reputational damage to the university. She argued that Cambridge should not investigate itself and urged the involvement of academics from outside the institution. Cambridge said it was aware of the concerns surrounding the case and would continue examining the circumstances of Arday’s appointment and tenure. Jesus College welcomed the university’s decision to review its appointment procedures. The college said Arday’s position as a fellow depended on his university appointment and that it relied on Cambridge to verify academic credentials. The University of Glasgow, where Arday served as Professor of Sociology of Education from January 2022 to March 2023, has also launched its own review. The university said the review would establish the facts surrounding his appointment and identify lessons for the future. The controversy began after US researcher Nathan Cofnas raised allegations that sections of Arday’s PhD dissertation had been copied from earlier academic works. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday his doctorate, said it had investigated the plagiarism allegations last year and rejected them. The university maintained that position and said his PhD remains valid. Further questions have since been raised about some of Arday’s academic publications and claims on his CV. Some institutions where he reportedly claimed to have held academic positions have denied that he occupied those roles. Arday has acknowledged errors in his academic work but denied intentionally plagiarising material. He has suggested that autism and inadequate supervision during the early stages of his academic career may have contributed to mistakes. He has also rejected allegations that he fabricated his personal achievements and has previously argued that some of the criticism directed at him was racially motivated. The controversy has also raised questions about how allegations against Arday were handled. Times Higher Education reporter Jack Grove was investigated by the Metropolitan Police following a complaint of harassment after he contacted Arday about the plagiarism allegations. The investigation was later closed. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley subsequently apologised and said the complaint should have been screened out at an earlier stage. Attention has also turned to Arday’s forthcoming memoir, “Great and Unfortunate Things”, which is scheduled for publication next week. Arday previously claimed in an interview that he had received a £1.4 million advance for the memoir, although he did not specify the currency. Publishing industry figures have questioned the size of the alleged payment. Publisher Simon & Schuster has said it intends to proceed with publication. Reports have also identified differences between an earlier proposal for the memoir and the final manuscript, including changes to the timing and description of some events in Arday’s life.

Dr Nigat Shah clarifies JPMC contract extension

Professor Dr Nigat Shah, head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), has clarified that her contract-based employment extension will not affect the posting or promotion of any associate professor. Speaking to the media, Dr Shah said several gynaecology units at JPMC had remained closed since 2013. She said one of the closed units was revived in 2022 to expand medical services and provide treatment to patients. She added that the department is continuing patient care alongside postgraduate training and research. According to Dr Shah, the hospital needs more specialised doctors, and she has no objection to the appointment of any qualified medical professional. Dr Shah stressed that her objective was not to create obstacles for another doctor’s appointment or career progression. She said her contract extension should not be viewed as an attempt to block the posting or promotion of any associate professor. The clarification comes after senior associate professors at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) reportedly raised concerns over Dr Shah’s reappointment. Several affected professors wrote to the Sindh chief minister, Sindh health minister and the federal ombudsman, expressing reservations about the decision. In their letter, the professors claimed that the second paragraph of a Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) notification issued on May 19 had been overlooked. They further maintained that the reappointment could affect the promotions of six associate professors who are awaiting advancement to higher positions. The professors have sought the authorities’ attention to the matter and called for the relevant rules and regulations to be considered while deciding appointments and promotions.
