KP governor visits Swat blast victims, vows to fight terrorism

SWAT : Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi on Tuesday visited Swat where he inquired after the victims injured in the recent suicide blast at Saidu Sharif Hospital, reaffirming the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism and provide the best possible medical care to the wounded.

During his visit to the hospital, the Governor met the injured, prayed for their early recovery and expressed solidarity with the affected families.

Commissioner Malakand Masood Ahmad, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Syed Fida Hassan Shah, senior officials of the district administration, police and other relevant departments accompanied the governor.

Governor Kundi reviewed the medical facilities being provided to the injured and directed the hospital administration to ensure the best possible treatment for all victims.

He said the pain and suffering of those injured in the “cowardly terrorist attack” was shared by the entire province and the nation, adding that the government stood firmly with the affected families and would always remember the sacrifices of the martyrs and the injured in the fight against terrorism.

Later, the Governor visited the office of the RPO Malakand where he was briefed on the overall law and order situation in Malakand Division, ongoing counter-terrorism measures, police preparedness, security challenges and the strategy to combat terrorism.

He also offered prayers for the departed souls of the martyrs and patience for their bereaved families.

Talking to media, Governor Kundi paid tribute to the police and security forces for their bravery and steadfastness in combating terrorism over the years.

He said the country had yet to fully equip the police with modern weapons and the resources required to effectively tackle the menace, stressing that the federation, provinces and all political forces must demonstrate complete unity against terrorism.

The Governor alleged that terrorists were receiving support and facilitation from across the border and reiterated that Afghan territory should not be allowed to be used against Pakistan.

He further alleged that India and Israel were attempting to exploit Afghan soil against Pakistan and said the issue had been raised at international forums.

Governor Kundi said attacks on mosques, educational institutions and public places were completely against the teachings of Islam, adding that there would be no negotiations with terrorists and the state would confront them with full force.

He said Pakistan had successfully foiled India’s attempts to portray it as a terrorist state through effective diplomacy and added that the country’s constructive role in easing tensions between Iran and the United States had earned international recognition, reinforcing its image as a peace-loving country committed to regional peace and stability.

    ECC approves Rs4.188bn PASSCO compensation package

    The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved a Rs4.188 billion compensation package for employees of the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO). The decision is part of the government’s plan to wind up PASSCO. The process is also linked to the disposal of the corporation’s wheat stocks. The government has set December 2026 as the deadline for completing the process. The ECC directed that the winding-up process must be independently reviewed. A third party will validate the process to ensure transparency and compliance with the approved plan. The committee also stressed the need to dispose of PASSCO’s wheat stocks as soon as possible. Officials said the early disposal of the stocks would help implement the employee compensation package on time. The Ministry of National Food Security and Research assured the ECC that the process would be completed by December. The government began work on the closure of PASSCO in 2025. The Prime Minister’s Office had directed the finance minister to oversee the process in consultation with the relevant ministry. A meeting chaired by the finance minister later decided that a severance package should be prepared for PASSCO employees. The package was designed along the lines of the voluntary separation scheme approved for employees of the Utility Stores Corporation. PASSCO’s Board of Directors subsequently approved the revised compensation package. The scheme covers regular employees as well as contractual and daily-wage workers. It includes severance compensation and several terminal benefits. These include leave encashment and a farewell grant. The package also provides maintenance support for widows and retired employees through PASSCO’s Benevolent Fund. The ECC had previously approved the winding up of PASSCO. It also approved the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle called the Wheat Stock Management Company (WSMC) Public Limited. The federal cabinet later ratified the decision. The total cost of the employee package is estimated at Rs4.188 billion. Around Rs3.967 billion has been allocated for severance compensation and terminal benefits for PASSCO employees. Another Rs221 million has been set aside for maintenance grants. The amount will benefit 38 widows and 236 retired employees.

    Motorway police must avoid unlawful challans

    Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has assured goods transporters that he will not allow the motorway police to issue a single unjustified or unlawful traffic challan, stressing that the government will honour all commitments made to the transport sector. The minister made the remarks at a reception hosted in his honour by goods transporters following the successful conclusion of negotiations between transporters and the government. Addressing the gathering, Abdul Aleem Khan urged transporters to comply with the axle-load policy, saying the regulation serves their own interests. He explained that carrying excessive weight puts additional pressure on vehicles and causes significant damage to roads and other transport infrastructure. The federal minister acknowledged the vital role of the transport industry in keeping the country’s economy moving. He said the government needs the cooperation of transporters to support economic growth and improve the overall transportation system. Abdul Aleem Khan also assured the transport community that he would personally monitor their concerns if necessary. “If required, I will stand on the roads myself to observe the problems faced by transporters,” he said, underlining his commitment to resolving issues through direct engagement. The development follows high-level talks chaired by Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, during which representatives of the Pakistan Goods Transport Association held negotiations with federal and provincial government officials. The talks ended successfully, prompting goods transporters to suspend their nationwide strike, which had continued for nine days. The transporters have agreed to postpone the strike for 40 days and resume the movement of goods across the country. The agreement has temporarily eased tensions between the government and the transport sector, while both sides are expected to use the 40-day period to address outstanding concerns and work toward a longer-term resolution.

    SWAT: Hundreds of people gathered in Swat on Friday for a peace rally to condemn the recent suicide bombing in Kabal and to demand lasting peace in the region. Tribal elders from the Swat Qaumi Jirga, political leaders, and local residents joined the demonstration, sending a clear message that violence would not stop them from raising their voices for peace. Speaking at Nishat Chowk in Mingora, participants said they would continue to come out onto the streets until peace is fully restored. They declared that suicide attacks and acts of terrorism would not force them into silence. Addressing the rally, speakers said Pashtun regions have suffered from terrorism for more than four decades. They urged the state to review its security policies and ensure the people of the region can live in peace and safety. The speakers expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the Kabal suicide bombing, describing the attack as an attempt to sabotage peace and destabilize the region. They said such efforts would no longer succeed. They also said the bombing was intended to frighten people and discourage participation in the peace movement, but insisted the public would not be intimidated. “We broke the wall of fear today,” participants said. “We will keep coming out until our dream of peace becomes a reality.” Mukhtiar Khan Yousafzai, a leader of the Swat Qaumi Jirga, said terrorists wanted to create fear so that their supporters could achieve their goals. “Around 20 people were martyred in this attack, but even if a thousand people were killed, the people of Swat would still stand up for peace,” he said. Former Mingora City Mayor Shahid Ali said a single terrorist attack damages the economy of the entire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, especially its tourism industry. He said Swat is a valley blessed with natural beauty and valuable resources, which, according to him, are targeted by those who want instability. He added that families, including children, would continue to join peaceful demonstrations because they would never accept a return to violence. Speakers also recalled the sacrifices made by the people of Swat for Pakistan’s stability, saying many families lost their homes and livelihoods during years of conflict. They stressed that the people were no longer willing to endure another period of unrest. Authorities put strict security measures in place for the rally. Walk-through gates were installed at entry points, and a heavy police presence was deployed throughout the venue.

    Muzaffargarh: A wedding celebration turned into a tragedy after an overloaded rickshaw carrying members of a wedding party plunged into a canal on Monday evening, leaving at least seven people dead and several others missing. According to rescue officials, the incident occurred when the rickshaw, which was carrying a large number of passengers including women and children, reportedly lost control while travelling along the canal-side road. The vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the water. Local residents and rescue divers immediately launched an operation to search for the passengers. Nine people were rescued alive and shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Some of those rescued were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of seven people. The deceased have been identified as 14-year-old Dilawar, son of Abdul Rasheed; seven-year-old Muneeb, son of Rashid; 58-year-old Sakina Bibi, wife of Allah Ditta; 15-year-old Sameera Bibi, daughter of M Shafiq; M Saim, son of M Iqbal; seven-year-old M Sabtain, son of Musharraf; and nine-year-old Raju, son of M Iqbal. Several passengers are still believed to be missing. Those reported missing include M Bilal, son of M Iqbal; M Yasir, son of Fida Hussain; M Ali, son of M Shafiq; Usman, son of Ghulam Fareed; Shakir, son of Ashiq Hussain; Hassnain, son of Musharraf Ali; Iqbal Bibi, daughter of Fida Hussain; Kaleem Ullah, son of Basheer Ahmad; and Zareef, son of Wazeer Ahmad. The rickshaw was reportedly carrying far more passengers than its permitted capacity, raising concerns about dangerous overloading. Rescue teams continued their search operation on Tuesday as authorities feared the death toll could increase. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the families of the wedding party, with relatives anxiously awaiting information about their loved ones as the recovery operation continues.

  • PML-N accuses Gujrat police of political victimisation after rally FIR

    GUJRAT: A political row has erupted in Gujrat days after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) celebrated its victories in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, with the party accusing the district police of registering what it described as a politically motivated first information report (FIR) against its local leadership. The controversy began after a victory rally organised in the NA-63 constituency, where supporters celebrated PML-N’s electoral success in AJK. During the procession, some participants allegedly resorted to aerial firing. Following the incident, Gujrat Police registered an FIR against around 10 nominated suspects and nearly 30 unidentified persons. Police have also arrested around 10 individuals in connection with the case. Among those named in the FIR is PML-N Gujrat District Coordinator Chaudhry Ali Warraich. The case includes serious offences under Sections 324, 148, 149 and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code, in addition to other charges related to the incident. Addressing an emergency press conference, Ali Warraich strongly rejected the allegations and accused the police of acting beyond their legal authority. He alleged that the FIR was registered without a proper inquiry and claimed that officials from City Police Station initiated legal proceedings despite the alleged incident occurring within the jurisdiction of Sadar Police Station. “This action was taken overnight without any transparent investigation. We will challenge this FIR through all available legal forums,” Warraich said. He maintained that only the individual found responsible for aerial firing should face legal consequences, adding that innocent participants should not be implicated. “If any person committed the firing, that individual should be punished according to law, but the rest should not be made scapegoats,” he said, demanding that responsibility be fixed on those directly involved. PML-N District President Nawabzada Tahir-ul-Mulk also condemned the FIR, describing it as political victimisation. “We have always opposed violence and lawlessness in Gujrat. Ironically, today our own workers are being implicated in what appears to be a politically motivated case,” he said. AJK MLA Chaudhry Zeeshan Younas, who recently won the LA-38 Jammu-V seat on the PML-N ticket, expressed solidarity with those booked in the case. “Most of those nominated are our supporters and voters. We will not leave them alone and will provide them every possible legal and political support,” he said. Warraich further alleged that Punjab ministers Chaudhry Salik Hussain and Chaudhry Shafay Hussain exerted pressure on the district administration to register the FIR at the request of PML-Q leader Chaudhry Hussain Elahi. However, no official response was immediately available from the ministers or the PML-Q regarding the allegations. According to PML-N leaders, the FIR is being viewed by many local political observers as a reaction to the party’s electoral gains in AJK, particularly in Gujrat, a district long regarded as a political stronghold of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), which currently has representation in both the federal and Punjab governments. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has reportedly taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the Inspector General of Police, Punjab. Despite repeated attempts by journalists to obtain the police version, Gujrat Police declined to comment on the matter. No official statement explaining the basis of the FIR or the arrests had been issued till the filing of this report.

    Muzaffarabad – After polling concluded in the second phase of the Azad Kashmir elections and ballot boxes were opened, Minute Mirror began receiving unofficial results from various constituencies. In the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, voting was held in nine constituencies of the Muzaffarabad Division and 12 seats reserved for refugees. Polling continued without interruption until 6:00 pm. LA-35 Jammu According to the unofficial and preliminary results from 100 out of 142 polling stations in LA-35 Jammu-II, Gujranwala, PML-N candidate Chaudhry Muhammad Ismail is leading with 18,788 votes. Independent candidate Sardar Ghiyas is trailing with 5,041 votes. LA-42 Kashmir According to the unofficial and preliminary results from four polling stations in LA-42 Kashmir Valley-III, PML-N candidate Syed Shaukat Ali Shah is leading with 692 votes while Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Asim Sharif Butt is behind with 57 votes. LA-45 Kashmir According to the unofficial and preliminary results from 11 polling stations in LA-45 Kashmir Valley-VI, Pakistan Peoples Party candidate Abdul Majid Khan is leading with 1,825 votes. His rival, All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference candidate Khawaja Muhammad Dilawar is trailing with 571 votes. The results are unofficial and preliminary and the final results will be announced by the relevant election authorities.
