At least 26 people, including women and children, have lost their lives after five days of heavy rainfall across the plains and mountainous districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The severe weather has also left several people injured and caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure in multiple parts of the province. The PDMA’s latest report stated that the fatalities include two women and four children, highlighting the devastating human impact of the ongoing spell of heavy rain. In addition to the deaths, six people sustained injuries in weather-related incidents reported across affected districts. The continuous rainfall triggered flash floods, landslides, and structural collapses, causing widespread destruction in both urban and rural areas. According to the disaster management authority, 65 houses have been damaged, with 41 homes suffering partial damage and 24 houses completely destroyed. The damage has displaced several families, many of whom are now relying on emergency assistance. The worst-affected districts include Abbottabad, Swat, Buner, Khyber, Lower Chitral, Lower Dir, Mansehra, Mardan, Peshawar, Shangla, Swabi, Upper Dir, and Upper Kohistan. Rescue teams and local authorities continue to monitor vulnerable areas where additional rainfall may increase the risk of flooding and landslides. The PDMA confirmed that it is working closely with Rescue 1122, district administrations, and other relevant government agencies to coordinate emergency response efforts. Rescue operations, relief distribution, and damage assessments are currently underway to ensure that affected families receive immediate assistance. Authorities have instructed district administrations to accelerate relief activities and provide essential support, including temporary shelter, food, medical care, and other emergency services to displaced residents. Officials are also assessing infrastructure damage and identifying areas requiring urgent rehabilitation. The recent spell of heavy rainfall serves as another reminder of the increasing challenges posed by extreme weather events in Pakistan. Experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness, early warning systems, and resilient infrastructure to reduce the impact of floods and severe storms on vulnerable communities. Residents living in flood-prone and mountainous areas have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities. As rescue and recovery operations continue, government agencies remain focused on protecting lives, supporting affected families, and restoring normal conditions in the worst-hit districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

PML-N’s Electric buses spark poll code debat…

The arrival of a fleet of green electric buses in Muzaffarabad, promised by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders, has sparked a political and legal debate just days before the first phase of the 2026 Azad Jammu and Kashmir general elections. The AJK Election Commission has warned that no new development schemes, financial packages, or government resources can be introduced or used during the election period in violation of the code of conduct. The controversy follows recent election rallies addressed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, during which they unveiled a series of development initiatives for AJK, including the provision of 10 green electric buses each for Muzaffarabad and Mirpur, along with several other public welfare projects. Shortly after the announcements, the first fleet of ten electric buses reached Muzaffarabad, drawing attention from political observers and raising questions about whether the move is compatible with election regulations. The AJK Election Commission has emphasized that the code of conduct prohibits the announcement or initiation of new development schemes during the election period to ensure a level playing field for all political parties. The PML-N’s unveiling of development projects and the subsequent arrival of the buses have been criticized by opposition parties, who argue that the move constitutes a violation of the code and an attempt to influence voters. The election commission has not yet issued a formal ruling on the matter, but the controversy has added to the pre-election tensions in the region. The first phase of the AJK general elections is scheduled for July 27 in Mirpur Division, with a comprehensive three-tier security strategy in place, involving police, Civil Armed Forces, and the Pakistan Army to ensure a peaceful and orderly polling process. As the election date approaches, the debate over the electric buses highlights the broader challenges of maintaining electoral integrity and ensuring that all parties adhere to the rules. The election commission’s warning serves as a reminder that the use of state resources for political purposes during elections is strictly prohibited, and any violations could lead to legal consequences. The coming days will determine whether the PML-N’s initiatives are deemed compliant with the code of conduct or whether they will face further scrutiny and potential action from the election authorities. The controversy underscores the importance of upholding democratic norms and ensuring that elections are conducted fairly and transparently, without undue influence from incumbents or ruling parties. The people of AJK will head to the polls with the hope of a free and fair election that reflects their will and aspirations.

    Gold prices rise in Pakistan

KARACHI: Gold prices climbed in Pakistan on Monday, even though international gold rates experienced a slight decline. The increase in local prices was mainly attributed to continued uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict, concerns over rising inflation, and investor caution ahead of key US economic data expected later this week. According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association, the price of 24-karat gold increased by Rs1,700 per tola, taking it to Rs428,436. Similarly, the price of 10 grams of goldrose by Rs1,457, reaching Rs367,314. The latest increase came after a significant decline on Saturday, when gold prices had fallen by Rs3,700 per tola to settle at Rs426,736. In contrast, the international gold market remained under slight pressure. Spot gold slipped by 0.1% to $4,037.01 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery declined by 0.3% to $4,035.80 per ounce during trading. Despite the minor drop, analysts believe global investors remain cautious because of ongoing geopolitical tensions and expectations of fresh economic developments in the United States. Silver prices in Pakistan also moved higher. The price of silver gained Rs54 per tola, taking it to Rs6,291, reflecting continued demand for precious metals in the local market. Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities, said that international gold prices had eased slightly after fluctuating throughout the trading session. According to him, gold touched a high of $4,080 per ounce before falling to a low of$4,019, eventually stabilising near $4,038. He noted that gold remains under pressure and the market is closely monitoring upcoming US economic indicators, particularly employment data, which could influence the Federal Reserve’s future monetary policy decisions. Agar added that gold has remained within a broad trading range of approximately $3,950 to $4,250 per ounce since June. However, he expects this range to break within the next one or two weeks, potentially leading to a stronger upward or downward price movement depending on market conditions. Market participants are now awaiting a series of important US labour market reports, as these will provide further insight into the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets like gold, while expectations of rate cuts tend to support bullion prices. Another factor attracting attention in the global market is reports that South Korea’s central bank intends to purchase gold from domestic producers, a move that could provide additional support to demand in the coming months. Meanwhile, oil markets have also remained highly volatile. Brent crude futures surged by more than 20% last month, driven largely by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns that higher energy prices could fuel inflation worldwide. Edward Meir, an analyst at Marex, said gold has traded within a narrow range of $4,000 to $4,200 per ounce for over a month. He explained that the possibility of inflation picking up again, particularly after July’s economic data, is helping support gold prices despite the recent weakness. Separately, the Pakistani rupee posted another modest gain against the US dollar. The local currency appreciated by 0.01%, closing at Rs277.77 per dollar, compared with Rs277.80 at the end of the previous trading session, reflecting continued stability in the foreign exchange market.
