15,000+ free heart surgeries completed under Punjab CM’s Programme

Lahore – More than 15,000 free cardiac surgeries for children from Punjab and other parts of the country have been successfully completed since the launch of the Chief Minister’s Children Heart Treatment Programme in September 2024.

The Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has played a key role in the programme. The system has helped manage patients medical records, prepare patient lists, make electronic referrals to private hospitals and ensure timely coordination between public and private hospitals.

This was revealed at a meeting chaired by PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf at the Arfa Software Technology Park (ASTP).

The meeting was briefed that HMIS is providing hospitals participating in the programme across Punjab with quick and easy access to patient records. This is helping doctors make better medical decisions while also making it easier for hospital administrations to monitor and coordinate patient treatment, referrals and other related matters.

The digital system has also played an important role in making the patient referral and treatment process more organized, transparent and integrated. It has accelerated the exchange of information between hospitals and helped reduce unnecessary delays in treatment.

Speaking on the occasion, PITB Chairman Faisal Yousaf said that the completion of more than 15,000 free heart surgeries for children was a major achievement of the Chief Minister’s programme.

He said HMIS had played a significant role in speeding up, organizing and improving the treatment process through digital records, electronic referrals and effective coordination among hospitals.

Faisal Yousaf further said that PITB would continue its support for promoting the use of modern digital technology in the healthcare sector to ensure the timely provision of quality medical facilities to citizens.

He said that the effective use of digital systems in healthcare not only facilitates patient treatment but also improves hospital administrative efficiency, transparency and coordination among different institutions.

    50,000 cusecs surge through Ravi River

    A low-level flood has been recorded in the Ravi River near Kamalia after water levels increased at the Mil Fatyana point. Authorities have stepped up monitoring and emergency preparations as floodwater continues to move downstream. According to the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Irrigation, around 50,000 cusecs of water is flowing through the Mil Fatyana section of the Ravi River. Officials are closely monitoring the river to assess any further rise in water levels and to ensure timely action if conditions worsen. The district administration has established flood relief camps in several vulnerable areas. The camps have been set up in Mil Fatyana, Kot Pathana, Adda Kalaira, Mauza Tara, Haveli Mai Safuran, Kot Karam Shah and Dedi. These facilities are intended to provide temporary shelter, food and emergency assistance to residents if evacuations become necessary. As part of efforts to improve disaster preparedness, Punjab has launched drone-based flood monitoring for the first time. The technology is being used to monitor river conditions, identify vulnerable locations and issue early warnings before floodwaters reach populated areas. Officials believe the system will help improve response times and reduce the impact of flooding. The rising water has already affected nearby agricultural land. Standing crops in Mil Fatyana, Khan Da Chak, Jhalar Sigla, Shahabal Shah, Basti Peepal Wala and Mauza Darsana have been submerged, raising concerns about crop losses and the financial impact on local farmers. The Irrigation Department has urged people living along the river belt to remain alert and cooperate with local authorities. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations as a precaution against any further increase in water levels. Officials said surveillance of the Ravi River will continue around the clock. Rescue teams and local administration remain on standby to respond quickly if the flood situation intensifies. Authorities have also appealed to the public to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary movement near the river until conditions become safe.

    Rs150m worth of rums, tires stolen in DHA

    A shop in Karachi’s DHA Phase 2 was reportedly robbed after unidentified thieves broke its locks and took rums and tires worth around Rs150 million. According to police, the suspects loaded the stolen goods into a vehicle and fled the area. Police later traced and recovered the vehicle from Shah Latif Town, with the stolen items still inside. Authorities have arrested one suspect in connection with the robbery and launched an investigation. Police are questioning the suspect to determine how the theft was planned and to identify other people who may have been involved. Investigators are also examining the recovered vehicle and other evidence to trace the remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

    Thousands of former Pak PWD employees still await salaries as Committee slams bureaucratic delay

    Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works erupted in frustration over massive delays in salary payments to former Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD) employees, exposing systemic inefficiencies and administrative apathy across federal ministries. Despite being adjusted in various departments, thousands of workers remain unpaid, sparking fears of widespread exploitation and financial insecurity. Chairman Senator Nasir Mehmood openly criticized ministries for misleading assurances, stating that the Committee would not tolerate empty promises. Officials revealed that out of 20,024 former Pak PWD employees, only 3,094 had received salaries, while around 30 cases remained pending, including employees in the Ministry of Planning and Ministry of Religious Affairs. “These delays are unacceptable,” Senator Mehmood said, stressing that commitments made to the Committee must be implemented without further excuses. The Committee also took up the plight of contractual employees, highlighting that existing rules deny them pensions. While the Ministry of Housing and Works had submitted proposals for special consideration, no concrete action has been taken yet, leaving many workers in limbo. Senator Naseema Ehsan highlighted the plight of widows and families of deceased employees, urging immediate resolution to their pending cases. Beyond employee issues, the Committee reviewed stalled development projects, including the Green Enclave I Housing Project, which has faced prolonged delays due to litigation, NAB inquiries, land disputes, bank guarantees, COVID-19 impacts, and contractual complications. Despite partial resumption of work, allottees continue to suffer from financial and operational setbacks. Chairman Mehmood warned, “Thousands of citizens invested in good faith; they deserve timely delivery, not excuses.” The Committee directed contractor Dr. Hafeez Abbasi to appear in the next session to explain persistent delays and emphasized that all stakeholders must cooperate to complete projects promptly. Officials confirmed that new housing schemes are on hold until ongoing projects are completed, highlighting a major bottleneck in government housing delivery. Other projects under scrutiny included lift replacements at Shaheed-e-Millat Secretariat, which remain incomplete, and the Model Jail project, where only Phase-I is near completion, while Phase-II, including women’s facilities, is still pending. The Committee demanded an on-site inspection in August to ensure accountability and prevent further slippage. In a stern warning, Senator Mehmood urged all ministries and departments to implement recommendations immediately and submit detailed progress reports in the next meeting, signaling zero tolerance for bureaucratic inaction.

    AJK polls underway as 1.4m voters cast ballots

    MUZAFFARABAD: Polling is underway in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Voting started at 8am and will continue until 5pm. Elections are being held today in 13 constituencies across three districts of Mirpur division — Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Polling has started at several stations. However, voting has yet to begin at some locations because voters have not arrived. In Kotli, polling is underway at Polling Station No. 38 in Aghar Colony. Voting has not started at polling stations 36 and 37 due to the absence of voters. Candidates cast votes Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, contesting from LA-7 in Bhimber, cast his vote at Polling Station No. 161. Speaking after voting, Farooq said voter turnout was expected to be higher in rural areas than in cities. He also urged women to leave their homes after completing household responsibilities and exercise their right to vote. Farooq expressed satisfaction with the law and order situation and the arrangements made for the elections in Bhimber. PPP confident of victory Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Muhammad Humayun Khan said the party was confident of securing a strong victory in the Azad Kashmir elections. He said the party’s electoral symbol, the arrow, represented the Kashmiri people’s rights to governance, ownership and employment. Humayun Khan said the PPP would continue to raise the voice of the people of Kashmir at every forum. He also called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, describing it as an important need. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari also expressed confidence that voters in Azad Kashmir would support the PPP. He said the party had played an important role in establishing a parliamentary democratic system in Azad Kashmir. More than 1.4 million voters registered A total of 296 candidates are contesting the elections, including candidates from the PPP, PML-N, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and independent candidates. There are 1,401,439 registered voters across the 13 constituencies. The number includes 725,118 male voters and 675,628 female voters. A total of 2,454 polling stations have been established across Mirpur division. Mirpur district has 597 polling stations across four constituencies. Kotli has 1,107 stations across six constituencies, while 608 polling stations have been established in three constituencies of Bhimber. Officials urge voters to participate Mirpur Commissioner Raja Tahir Mumtaz and DIG Kamran Ali visited wards 16 and 17 of LA-3 to review the polling arrangements. Speaking to the media, Commissioner Mumtaz said polling was proceeding peacefully across all three districts from 8am. He urged voters to come out and cast their ballots without fear. He assured the public that the administration had arranged a peaceful environment for voters. Tight security arrangements Authorities have put in place extensive security measures for the elections. Azad Kashmir Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Mustafa Mughal warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the voting process. AJK Chief Secretary Khushal Khan said the people of Azad Kashmir had rejected groups seeking to create disorder and had shown confidence in the democratic process. He said all state institutions were prepared to ensure peaceful elections.

    Imran Khan shifa hospital transfer: PTI announces …

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to approach the Supreme Court with a contempt of court petition if former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan is not transferred to Shifa International Hospital by Thursday night. According to PTI sources, the party is waiting for implementation of the Supreme Court’s order regarding Imran Khan’s Shifa Hospital transfer. If no progress is made by the deadline, the party plans to file the contempt petition on Friday morning. The Supreme Court had ordered on August 18 that Khan, who remains imprisoned, be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical assessment and treatment. The court also directed the formation of a medical board, including specialists and Khan’s personal physician. The order came amid continuing concerns surrounding Khan’s health and access to medical treatment. The court also issued directions concerning family meetings and communication with his son. The government, however, challenged the decision. On August 19, it filed a review petition arguing that the order to move Khan to a private hospital should be reconsidered. The government has maintained that existing prison and legal procedures should be followed regarding treatment of prisoners. The legal dispute intensified on Thursday when the Supreme Court Registrar’s Office returned the government’s review petition after raising objections. Sources said the government intends to address the objections and submit the petition again. PTI has maintained that the Supreme Court’s order should be implemented without delay. Party representatives have warned that failure to comply with the directive could lead to contempt proceedings against the officials responsible for implementation. The developing situation has created another legal and political confrontation between PTI and the government. The next several hours could determine whether the matter is resolved administratively or moves into another round of proceedings before the Supreme Court. For now, PTI’s position is clear: if Imran Khan is not shifted to Shifa International Hospital by Thursday night, the party says it will seek legal action through a contempt of court petition on Friday morning.

    Lahore crime rate declines, DIG Faisal Kamran says

    LAHORE: DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran visited the Lahore Press Club and attended the “Meet the Press” programme as the chief guest. President Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari, Senior Vice President Salman Qureshi, General Secretary Afzal Talib, Joint Secretary Imran Sheikh, Finance Secretary Salik Nawaz, Governing Body members Syed Sajjad Kazmi, Sarmad Farrukh Khawaja, Asad Mahmood, Syed Badr Saeed and Kamran Khan, along with office-bearers of the Crime Reporters Association and senior journalists, attended the event. Welcoming the distinguished guest, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari said that the police and journalists had a close working relationship and both professions were jointly striving to eliminate crime from society. He appreciated the tireless efforts and policies of DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, saying that they had contributed to a decline in the crime rate in Lahore. Speaking to the media, DIG Operations Faisal Kamran said that in June 2023, as many as 9,149 incidents used to be reported in a single month, whereas the number had now come down to around 900 calls. He said tackling crime in any major city was a major challenge, adding that metropolitan cities such as New York also faced numerous challenges in this regard. He said that the Safe City, CCD and Lahore Police had worked jointly to control crime. Safe City’s assistance was sought in tracing reported incidents, he added. He said that Lahore had witnessed a decline in its crime index compared with 380 cities around the world. Faisal Kamran said that in 2026, major events including Basant, Ramazan, Sehri, Eid shopping and other public events, as well as Eid-ul-Azha and Muharram-ul-Haram, were held peacefully. Lahore Police continued to perform its duties during all these events, he added. The DIG Operations said that, besides these measures, the accountability system within the police had also been strengthened. “Wherever there is corruption, I will take strict action,” he said. He said that in 2023, Rs3.6 million had been provided for the welfare of police personnel, whereas Rs60 million had so far been provided for their welfare. He further stated that during the past two and a half years, he had personally heard the grievances of 55,050 people at open courts, adding that 70 to 80 per cent of the complainants had expressed satisfaction with the resolution of their complaints. The DIG Operations said that an MoU had also been signed between Lahore Police and the legal fraternity under which free legal assistance was being provided to deserving and underprivileged people. He added that Lahore Police was also taking strict action against usury and illegal money-lending. At the conclusion of the programme, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari and representatives of the Crime Reporters Association presented commemorative shields and bouquets to DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran.
