Messi returns as Inter Miami held to draw

Lionel Messi made his long-awaited return for Inter Miami on Saturday after an extended break following the FIFA World Cup, helping his side earn a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer (MLS).

The Argentine captain featured for the first time since the World Cup final, coming off the bench in the second half. Although he created several dangerous moments and came close to scoring, he was unable to find the net in his comeback appearance.

The match was delayed by 40 minutes due to bad weather before Inter Miami made a bright start. Veteran striker Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the 16th minute, continuing his impressive run of form with his seventh goal in four matches.

Columbus Crew restored parity in the 34th minute after an own goal by Casemiro. However, Inter Miami regained the lead before halftime when Suarez provided a precise assist for Noah Allen, who headed the ball into the net.

The visitors refused to give up and found the equaliser late in the match. Midfielder Brais Mendez, making his debut for Columbus Crew after joining from Spanish club Real Sociedad, curled home a free kick in the 84th minute to secure a share of the points.

The draw brought an end to Inter Miami’s six-match winning streak, though the club remained second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

In another MLS fixture, Polish striker Robert Lewandowski delivered a memorable performance in his first home appearance for Chicago Fire. The veteran forward scored twice to inspire his team to a 2-1 victory over Charlotte FC.

Lewandowski netted his first goal for Chicago to cancel out Charlotte’s early lead before scoring again moments later. He completed his brace in the second half, helping Chicago register its first league win since the World Cup break.

Messi’s return and Lewandowski’s impressive display added fresh excitement to the MLS season as several international stars resumed club action following the conclusion of the World Cup.

    Pakistan records $6.24 billion net FDI since SIFC …

    ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has attracted approximately US$ 6.24 billion in net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from FY24 to July-April FY26 since the establishment of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), according to data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The Minister Incharge of SIFC stated that gross FDI inflows during the same period stood at approximately US$ 10.41 billion, highlighting investor confidence in Pakistan’s investment regime. April 2024: Highest Monthly FDI in 51 Months   According to SBP data released in May 2024, FDI inflows surged 172% year-on-year (YoY) to $358.84 million in April 2024, compared to $131.9 million in April 2023. This marks the highest monthly FDI inflow in 51 months. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, FDI jumped 39%, up from $258.04 million in March 2024. For the first 10 months of FY24 (July-April), total FDI inflows reached $1.46 billion, compared to $1.35 billion in the same period of FY23. Top Investors & Sectors Country-wise:   1. China: Largest investor with $177.37 million net FDI in April 2024 2. UAE: $51.93 million 3.     Information Minister launches National Press Club …

    Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Monday inaugurated the National Press Club’s (NPC) new website and announced the establishment of a modern digital lab at the club within the next two months to enhance journalists’ digital skills. Addressing the launch ceremony, Tarar said digital transformation had become essential for media institutions and stressed the need for journalists to equip themselves with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), digital media and modern reporting techniques. He said the government was committed to addressing journalists’ welfare issues, including job security, timely payment of salaries, housing, restoration of health cards and other welfare initiatives. He also announced efforts to partner with an academic institution to provide professional digital skills training for media professionals. The minister said the government was aware of the financial challenges facing the media industry and emphasized the need for a comprehensive policy to protect journalists’ jobs and livelihoods. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to media freedom and pledged continued support for strengthening the country’s print and electronic media. NPC President Abdul Razzaq Sial welcomed the minister and urged the government to resolve longstanding issues faced by journalists, including housing quotas, health cards, special grants and pending dues. NPC Secretary Dr. Furqan Rao said the newly launched website would digitalize members’ records, improve transparency and enable journalists to update their professional profiles online.
