Met Gala 2027 theme sparks backlash after John Gal…

The Met Gala 2027 is already generating heated debate months before the event, following the announcement that legendary fashion designer John Galliano will be the focus of next year’s Costume Institute exhibition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue revealed that the 2027 exhibition will be titled “John Galliano: Horizon,” a decision that has drawn both praise for Galliano’s creative legacy and criticism over his controversial past. The annual Costume Institute exhibition serves as the inspiration for the Met Gala dress code, making the announcement one of the fashion industry’s biggest events. Organizers described John Galliano: Horizon as a celebration of the designer’s extraordinary impact on fashion, highlighting his groundbreaking work at fashion houses including Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela. The exhibition is expected to showcase his most influential collections and explore his decades-long contribution to haute couture. (metmuseum.org)

However, the announcement quickly sparked criticism online. Many social media users questioned the decision to honor Galliano because of his highly publicized antisemitic remarks made in 2011. At the time, the British designer was dismissed from Christian Dior after a video emerged showing him making offensive comments. He was later convicted by a French court for public insults based on religion and ethnicity. (bbc.com)

Supporters of the exhibition argue that Galliano has spent years rebuilding his career and taking responsibility for his actions. Following the scandal, he publicly apologized, sought treatment for addiction and gradually returned to the fashion industry. His creative revival at Maison Margiela has been widely praised, with many critics describing his recent couture collections as some of the finest work of his career. (vogue.com)

Critics, however, believe that celebrating Galliano with one of fashion’s highest-profile exhibitions sends the wrong message. Some argue that his past should not be separated from his artistic achievements, while others say the exhibition should provide broader context rather than simply celebrating his influence. The debate has quickly spread across social media, with fashion enthusiasts, journalists and cultural commentators expressing differing views. (theguardian.com)

Despite the controversy, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue have defended their decision by emphasizing Galliano’s lasting impact on fashion history. They say the exhibition aims to examine his artistic vision and transformative role in modern design rather than overlook the complexities of his career. (vogue.com)

As anticipation builds for the 2027 Met Gala, discussions surrounding John Galliano: Horizon are likely to continue. While some view the exhibition as a celebration of one of fashion’s most imaginative designers, others believe it raises important questions about accountability, redemption and the legacy of influential public figures. The conversation has ensured that next year’s Met Gala will be about more than glamorous red-carpet looks—it will also be a reflection of the ongoing debate over art, history and responsibility.

US official insists Gaza peace plan remains active despite Netanyahu’s rejection

A Board of Peace official confirmed on Monday that US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace framework remains operative, despite public pushback from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu rejected any withdrawal of Israeli forces until the Palestinian militant group Hamas is genuinely disarmed. His remarks came as the Israeli military  halted offensive operations in Gaza following pressure from Washington. The Board of Peace official emphasized that the initiative relies on phased implementation and verification on the ground, ensuring Israel makes no irreversible security concessions prior to confirmed compliance. Under the plan announced last month, Israeli forces would withdraw as Hamas disarms, paving the way for an International Stabilisation Force to partner with a newly formed Palestinian police unit. Negotiation roadmaps are being coordinated between the Board of Peace and Hamas while bilateral discussions with Israeli leadership continue.

UN extends Volker Turk’s term as Rights Chief

The United Nations General Assembly has approved a second four-year term for UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk. The decision was made despite strong opposition from the United States, Russia and Israel. The 193-member General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of the extension. A total of 144 countries voted for the proposal. Ten opposed it, while 13 abstained. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had proposed Turk for another full term. His current term is due to end in October. The vote came amid growing tensions between Washington and the United Nations. The US administration has reduced funding for several UN agencies. It has also withdrawn from a number of UN bodies. Washington had asked the General Assembly to delay the vote. US officials said more time was needed for consultations and review. The United States also warned that it could reconsider its relationship with the UN if the proposal was approved. US Representative for UN Management and Reform Jeff Bartos criticised the process before the vote. He said the decision did not allow enough time for discussion and oversight by member states. Bartos warned that the US could reassess its engagement, participation and funding of the United Nations. Despite the warning, most member states supported Turk. The European Union backed the extension. Several African and Latin American countries also voted in favour. China supported the proposal as well. Russia strongly opposed Turk’s reappointment. Russian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dmitry Chumakov accused the rights chief of bias against Moscow. He also criticised Turk for making what Russia described as unfounded allegations against the country. Russia had proposed a shorter extension for Turk. Its plan would have kept him in the position only until the end of 2026. The General Assembly rejected that proposal by a large majority. Israel also opposed the decision. The Israeli Foreign Ministry criticised Guterres’ proposal and said the decision should have been left to the next UN secretary-general. Turk has faced criticism from several powerful countries because of his strong position on human rights issues. He has criticised Russia’s war in Ukraine. He has also raised concerns about Israel’s actions in Gaza. Turk has further called for investigations into deaths involving people held in US immigration custody. Human rights organisations have defended his position. They say the UN human rights chief must be able to challenge powerful countries when fundamental freedoms are threatened. The position has become increasingly important as conflicts and restrictions on civil liberties continue in different parts of the world. Turk is an Austrian lawyer. He has worked with the United Nations for decades. His UN career has included senior positions in Geneva. He has also served in field locations, including Kosovo. With the General Assembly’s latest decision, Turk will become the first UN human rights chief to serve two complete four-year terms. His reappointment is likely to keep human rights at the centre of international debate. It may also further test relations between the United Nations and countries that have opposed his approach.

US vows unprecedented economic pressure on Iran

WASHINGTON: The United States hUS vows unprecedented economic pressure on Iranas warned that it will introduce an unprecedented package of economic measures against Iran as Washington prepares to intensify pressure on Tehran amid stalled ceasefire negotiations and rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said further announcements were expected next week, describing the planned measures as unlike anything previously used against a country facing economic isolation. Bessent said the new strategy would combine tougher economic restrictions with continued efforts to prevent Iranian ports from receiving or sending goods. He indicated that Washington intended to use economic pressure alongside restrictions on maritime traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, meanwhile, said the American military was capable of maintaining a naval presence in the region for an indefinite period to enforce the blockade. He said US naval vessels could be rotated in and out of the region to sustain the operation. The confrontation comes as attempts to revive a ceasefire agreement have faltered. Iran has sought to use its position around the Strait of Hormuz as leverage against Washington, while the United States has continued to tighten economic pressure on Tehran. The waterway has become a major flashpoint because of its importance to global energy supplies. Before the conflict began, roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the strait. Shipping activity has since fallen sharply, raising concerns over supplies, prices and the wider global economy. Two vessels belonging to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were also attacked while transiting the strait, according to the United Arab Emirates’ state news agency. The UAE government blamed Iran for the incident. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that Washington has control over the strategic waterway. Iran, however, has rejected that assertion and maintained that the strait will not fully reopen unless its demands are addressed. Tehran has called for the removal of economic sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets. The prolonged confrontation is also putting pressure on the global energy market. The International Energy Agency has revised its forecast for global oil supply, warning that production could fall by about 4.3 million barrels per day this year. Oil prices declined by more than 2% on Thursday as markets reacted to expectations of weaker demand and a rise in US crude inventories. However, renewed attacks in the region continued to fuel fears that the conflict could spread further. The economic consequences are becoming increasingly serious. Economists have warned that a prolonged war could weaken global growth and increase the risk of recession in some economies. Hegseth declined to say whether declaring a ceasefire earlier in the year had been a mistake. He said the administration remained focused on preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and insisted that the United States was taking the steps it considered necessary to achieve that objective.

Syed Mohammad Ahmed on Kya Drama Hai judges

Syed Mohammad Ahmed has been a pillar of Pakistani television for decades. As an actor and writer, he has built a reputation not only for his craft but for the kind of honest, unhurried perspective on the industry that comes from having seen it evolve over a very long time. In a recent podcast appearance, he offered exactly that kind of perspective, speaking candidly about Kya Drama Hai and the three respected actresses who serve as its judges. The context for his remarks was a controversy that had recently surfaced around Nadia Khan, the show’s host, who had mimicked Sajal Aly in a segment that drew significant criticism from audiences who felt the impression was mocking rather than affectionate. Ahmed addressed this directly and did not tread lightly around it. He said that in earlier times, mimicry was an art form conducted with permission and done tastefully, with genuine respect for the person being imitated. What he saw in Nadia Khan’s impression of Sajal Aly fell outside those boundaries. His discomfort was rooted in what he perceived as a mismatch in calibre. He said he did not understand how someone who was not even in Sajal’s league could presume to mock her in that manner. It was a pointed observation, delivered without hostility but with unmistakable clarity. He then turned his attention to the judges themselves, Marina Khan and Atiqa Odho, and what he had to say about them was warm but carried its own kind of candour. Of Marina Khan, he spoke with genuine admiration. He described her as someone who simply does not backbite, a quality he clearly values greatly, and said she is a truly great person. His comment about why she would participate in a show like Kya Drama Hai was not unkind but it was honest. He said he understood that running a household requires income, and that Marina simply has to work, framing it as a practical reality rather than a criticism of the show itself. He was equally warm toward Atiqa Odho, describing her as well-learned and well-read. But again he expressed genuine puzzlement about why someone of her intellect and standing would join such a programme. The thread connecting both observations was his broader view of why channels produce the kind of content they do. He was clear that it comes down to ratings. Channels run this content because it works commercially, and individuals participate because participation keeps them working. He was not condemning anyone, but he was naming a dynamic that many in the industry understand but rarely state plainly. For an actor of Syed Mohammad Ahmed’s stature, the willingness to speak this honestly about a format that involves three of his respected contemporaries is itself notable. He managed to criticise a system without diminishing the people within it, which is a harder balance to strike than it looks.

Grande said the decision was not a response to online negativity but part of a personal commitment to creating a healthier and more balanced future.  The Grammy-winning artist told fans that the tour has been one of the most healing experiences of her career. Speaking from the stage, she thanked concertgoers for their unwavering support and said their love has carried her through challenging moments. Earlier this year, she admitted in an interview with Vogue Japan that taking a break would probably be healthy because she has rarely slowed down since becoming a global star as a teenager. She said her goal for the next chapter of her life is to find more balance than she had during the previous 15 years.  Her representatives recently confirmed that she will step back from public-facing appearances after the Eternal Sunshine Tour concludes in September. They explained that Grande wants to finish the tour on a positive note before taking a well-earned break from constant public visibility. The statement also confirmed that she has withdrawn from the planned West End production of Sunday in the Park with George, with producers expressing their full support for her decision.  Despite the temporary pause, Grande has made it clear that she is not saying goodbye to music or acting. She has previously described music as her “lifeline” and has repeatedly said she hopes to continue exploring both creative passions in the future.  For now, Ariana Grande is choosing rest over relentless schedules. Her latest message highlights the growing importance of setting boundaries, proving that even one of the world’s biggest pop stars recognizes the value of protecting personal well-being while looking ahead to the next chapter of her career.
