Meta’s AI model breaches company system in security test gone wrong

Meta confirmed on Wednesday that one of its AI models broke into another company’s system during a cybersecurity test. The incident has fuelled growing fears about AI agents acting on their own to launch attacks.

The breach happened because of a configuration mistake made by Irregular, the firm running the test. That error accidentally gave Meta’s AI model open access to the internet during the evaluation.

This isn’t an isolated case either. Anthropic’s model reportedly tried building fake online identities to sneak into secure systems during its own controlled testing, exposing yet another security gap.

OpenAI faced a similar problem too. Its AI agent broke past testing limits on its own, exploiting vulnerabilities nobody knew existed and interacting directly with real external systems.

Meta says it’s now investigating the incident. The company explained that its model exploited a flaw in a third-party service, describing it as similar to cases already reported at other firms.

According to a report from The Information, the model involved was Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1. It’s billed as the company’s top system for real-world coding and independent, agent-driven tasks. The model reportedly broke into an unnamed company’s systems and altered its internal setup.

Irregular pushed back on how serious the incident actually was. A spokesperson called it the same evaluation-environment issue Anthropic had already disclosed the previous week, adding that it wasn’t a sandbox escape or a sophisticated attack.

The firm said there are no unresolved issues at this stage. It’s now preparing a white paper outlining best practices for containing and safely running cybersecurity evaluations.

These back-to-back incidents across three major tech firms have caught the attention of US lawmakers. Many worry that increasingly capable AI models could eventually be weaponized for real cyberattacks.

A group of Republican state attorneys general has already asked OpenAI to preserve all records tied to a separate security incident involving Hugging Face. OpenAI responded by saying it’s treating the matter seriously and plans to publish a full technical report.

Meanwhile, the White House has stepped in too. It invited top AI companies, including Google, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI, to discuss a new voluntary framework for cybersecurity testing of advanced models.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington was preparing unprecedented economic measures against Tehran. He said the United States would combine intensified economic pressure with restrictions linked to Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also said Washington had the military capability to maintain its naval blockade of Iran for an extended period. He said American ships could be rotated to sustain the operation. The confrontation has severely affected Iran’s economy and disrupted its access to international trade. Tehran, meanwhile, has sought to use the Strait of Hormuz as leverage in negotiations with Washington. Iran has demanded the removal of economic sanctions and the release of frozen assets as part of conditions for restoring normal maritime traffic. Commercial traffic through the Strait has fallen sharply since the conflict began. The decline has heightened fears that a prolonged disruption could further affect global energy supplies. Two vessels linked to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were reportedly attacked while passing through the waterway, prompting condemnation from the UAE. The situation has also kept oil markets volatile. Although crude prices declined recently amid concerns over weaker demand and rising US inventories, renewed attacks and threats of further escalation have continued to unsettle investors. The International Energy Agency has revised its forecast for global oil supply, projecting a larger decline than previously expected.     Gastroenteritis and Cholera cases rise in Lahore

      Gastroenteritis and cholera cases have started emerging in Lahore and surrounding areas, raising concerns about the quality of drinking water, food hygiene and sanitation in the city. Health officials have reported a significant number of patients suffering from gastrointestinal illnesses at basic health centres, dispensaries and district health units across Lahore. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Health Lahore, Dr Asif Niazi, said that gastroenteritis cases were being reported at basic health centres, dispensaries and district health units. According to him, approximately 7,000 people were affected by gastroenteritis during the month of July. Dr Niazi further revealed that basic health centres were receiving an average of 271 gastroenteritis patients every day. He said that a significant proportion of those affected were children, with most patients falling between the ages of five and 10. The increasing number of cases has also been observed at major teaching hospitals in Lahore. Senior Medical Officer Dr Mustafa Kamal said that patients suffering from gastroenteritis and cholera were being brought to teaching hospitals for treatment. He stated that Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was receiving between 150 and 200 such patients within a 24-hour period. According to Dr Kamal, a high incidence of dysentery is one of the major symptoms associated with cholera. He added that cholera cases were also being reported in the emergency department and outpatient department of Mayo Hospital. The health officials have linked the rise in gastrointestinal diseases to unsafe drinking water and unhygienic food. Senior Medical Officer Dr Kazim said that contaminated water was one of the major factors contributing to the spread of cholera and other gastrointestinal illnesses. He also warned against consuming food sold by roadside vendors, saying that unhygienic food from carts and stalls could increase the risk of cholera and diarrhoea. According to the medical officer, ice sold in local markets could also be a potential source of contamination and may contribute to the spread of cholera and diarrhoea. Health experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of clean drinking water, proper sanitation and food hygiene in preventing waterborne diseases. Gastroenteritis can cause symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dehydration, while cholera can become particularly dangerous if severe dehydration is not treated promptly. The situation is particularly concerning for children, who can become dehydrated quickly after repeated episodes of diarrhoea or vomiting. With most reported gastroenteritis patients reportedly between five and 10 years of age, health authorities and families may need to pay particular attention to children’s water and food consumption. Residents have been advised to take precautions by drinking safe and properly treated water, maintaining hand hygiene and avoiding food and beverages prepared under unhygienic conditions. Particular caution may also be necessary when purchasing ice, as contaminated water used in its preparation can potentially transmit waterborne infections. The rising number of cases has highlighted the need for improved monitoring of drinking-water sources, food outlets and roadside vendors in Lahore and its surrounding areas. Authorities may also need to strengthen public awareness campaigns about preventive measures and ensure that affected patients have timely access to medical treatment. With thousands of cases reported in July and hospitals continuing to receive patients, health officials are closely monitoring the situation. Ensuring access to clean water and safe food remains essential to controlling the spread of gastroenteritis, cholera and other waterborne diseases across Lahore.

    KARACHI: Internal differences within Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) intensified on Sunday after supporters of two rival factions allegedly clashed outside the party’s Bahadurabad headquarters in Karachi, leaving at least three people injured. Witnesses also reported aerial firing near the Bahadurabad headquarters during the unrest, creating panic in the area. Three people sustained injuries during the clashes. Senior MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar said the dispute erupted after a meeting of party leaders at the Bahadurabad office. Speaking to the media, he alleged that supporters of one faction assaulted MPA Ejaz-ul-Haq and party leader Zakir. He further claimed that party leaders Mangla Sharma and Sabeen Ghori were also mistreated during the incident. MQM-P leader Amin Ul Haque alleged that one party worker was injured in the firing, while several others suffered injuries due to stone-pelting. He also claimed that extensive vandalism took place inside the party office and that the office’s DVR recording system was taken away. Amin Ul Haque said the matter had reached a point where it could no longer be ignored and called the incident deeply concerning for the party. Meanwhile, Dr Farooq Sattar later arrived at the Bahadurabad headquarters following the clashes as senior party leaders attempted to assess the situation and address the growing internal crisis.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the government to take coordinated and effective steps to expand employment opportunities for young Pakistanis under the National Youth Employment Policy. Chairing a meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday to review progress on the policy, the prime minister said providing decent jobs to the country’s skilled and talented youth remained a key priority of the government. He called for a comprehensive strategy involving relevant ministries and institutions to ensure the policy delivers practical employment opportunities. He also stressed the need to focus on skills development, particularly for young women, so they can compete for emerging jobs in both Pakistan and international markets. The prime minister directed authorities to give special attention to employment opportunities for young people in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Officials briefed the meeting on reforms introduced in the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA). The reforms are aimed at connecting Pakistan’s skilled workforce with the changing requirements of local industries and international employers. NAVTTC is working to help Pakistani workers obtain internationally recognised certifications and improve their language skills for overseas employment.
