Mike Hesson meets domestic coaches

MULTAN: Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has begun preparations for the country’s long-term one-day cricket plans by meeting the coaching staff of the four teams competing in the National Champions Cup.

Hesson arrived in Multan on Sunday to monitor the tournament and interact with the coaches and players as Pakistan’s domestic cricket season gets underway. The National Champions Cup will be played from August 11 to August 18 at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with all seven matches scheduled as day-night fixtures.

The tournament represents one of the first major events of Pakistan’s domestic season for 2026-27 and is expected to provide the national coaching setup with an opportunity to assess players ahead of future international commitments.

During his visit, Hesson held a detailed meeting with the head coaches of the four participating teams. Pakistan Greens are being coached by former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, while Ijaz Junior is in charge of Pakistan Gold. Iqbal Imam is leading Pakistan Whites, and former Pakistan fast bowler Aizaz Cheema is coaching Pakistan Blues.

Pakistan’s white-ball bowling coach Ashley Noffke and National Cricket Academy coach Shahid Aslam were also present during the meeting.

The discussions primarily focused on developing players’ one-day cricket skills and improving different aspects of their overall game. The coaching staff exchanged views on player development, performance standards and the areas that need greater attention as Pakistan looks to build a strong pool of players for the future.

The National Champions Cup is particularly significant because it will provide an early platform for players hoping to push their claims for selection in Pakistan’s national white-ball squad. With the ICC World Cup 2027 on the horizon, the domestic tournament is expected to play an important role in identifying and developing talent capable of performing at the international level.

The 2027 ICC World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, making long-term preparation essential for Pakistan. The national coaching staff is expected to closely monitor performances throughout the domestic season as they work towards assembling a balanced and competitive squad.

The National Champions Cup will follow a single-league round-robin format. Each of the four teams will face the others once during the league stage, with the two highest-ranked sides progressing to the final.

The competition will begin on August 11 when Pakistan Greens take on Pakistan Whites. Pakistan Blues will face Pakistan Gold on August 12, followed by another match involving Pakistan Blues against Pakistan Whites on August 13.

On August 14, Pakistan Gold will meet Pakistan Greens, while Pakistan Blues will play Pakistan Greens on August 15. The final league match will take place on August 16, with Pakistan Gold facing Pakistan Whites.

The tournament will conclude with the final on August 18 at the Multan Cricket Stadium. With Hesson and members of the national coaching setup closely involved, the competition is expected to provide valuable insight into Pakistan’s emerging one-day talent and strengthen preparations for the 2027 World Cup.

Henderson completes Chelsea switch after Brentford exit

Chelsea have brought in England midfielder Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, ending his short stint at Brentford and giving the veteran a fresh chapter at Stamford Bridge. The former Liverpool skipper, who was part of England’s squad at this year’s World Cup in North America, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with the Blues. Henderson said joining a club of Chelsea’s stature, working under a manager he rates highly, and playing alongside such a talented squad made the move impossible to turn down. He also pointed to the clear ambition shown by the club’s ownership as something that impressed him deeply. Looking ahead, he said his focus would simply be on working hard every day, on and off the pitch, to help his new teammates and push the team forward. Reports had already surfaced last week confirming that Henderson’s Brentford deal had been cancelled once Chelsea’s interest in the midfielder became apparent, setting the stage for a move between the two west London-adjacent rivals. The 36-year-old rose to prominence during his years at Liverpool, where he won both the Premier League and the Champions League. He departed Anfield in 2023 to join Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, before switching to Dutch giants Ajax only half a year later. His return to English football came last year through a two-year contract with Brentford. A veteran of 91 caps for England, Henderson featured in this year’s World Cup squad but played only sparingly, and later suffered a broken arm during the tournament. His move to Chelsea comes just two days after the club completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton. It has been an active summer in the transfer market for the Blues, who already broke the British transfer record by paying £117 million ($157 million) for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, while also adding French defender Maxence Lacroix and Atalanta man Marco Palestra to their ranks. Chelsea’s previous campaign ended in disappointment, as they finished 10th in the Premier League table, narrowly behind Brentford, and missed out on European qualification altogether. Manager Xabi Alonso will now be eager to turn things around when his side begins the new season with an away trip to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24.

Ronaldo finally marries Georgina after 10 years

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has married his longtime partner, model and businesswoman Georgina Rodríguez, bringing their nearly decade-long relationship to a new chapter. The couple confirmed the marriage on August 11, 2026, through a post on Ronaldo’s Instagram account. The image showed two hands wearing wedding rings, with one hand resting over the other. The announcement quickly attracted millions of likes and widespread reactions from fans around the world. According to Portuguese media reports, Ronaldo and Rodríguez exchanged vows in a private civil ceremony in Cascais, a coastal town near Lisbon. The couple reportedly kept the celebration away from the public eye and limited the gathering to close family members. Their five children were present at the ceremony. Ronaldo’s eldest son, Cristiano Jr., as well as twins Eva and Mateo, Alana Martina and Bella Esmeralda, were part of the family celebration. The wedding also carried special significance because it took place exactly one year after Rodríguez announced their engagement. On August 11, 2025, she shared a photograph of her engagement ring and confirmed that she had accepted Ronaldo’s proposal. Ronaldo and Rodríguez first met in Madrid in 2016, when Rodríguez was working at a Gucci store. Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid at the time. Their relationship gradually became public, and they soon emerged as one of the most recognised celebrity couples in the sporting world. Over the years, Rodríguez has accompanied Ronaldo during major stages of his football career, including his moves from Spain to Italy, England and Saudi Arabia. At the same time, she developed her own career in modelling, fashion and entertainment. The couple’s relationship has also been closely followed through Rodríguez’s Netflix reality series, I Am Georgina, which has offered audiences a glimpse into their family life and international lifestyle. Their marriage announcement came shortly after false rumours circulated that the pair were preparing to marry in Madeira. On August 8, crowds of fans and photographers reportedly gathered near Funchal Cathedral after social media speculation suggested that Ronaldo and Rodríguez were holding their wedding there. The event turned out to be the wedding of another couple. Ronaldo, 41, remains one of football’s most decorated players. He has won the Ballon d’Or five times and has represented Sporting, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr, while also captaining Portugal. The Portuguese star has scored close to 1,000 career goals and recently appeared at his sixth World Cup, further extending his record-setting international career.

Mohammad Amir questions Babar Azam’s Test captaincy return

LAHORE: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has questioned the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to reappoint Babar Azam as the national Test captain, saying the star batter should have been allowed to focus entirely on his batting rather than taking on the added responsibility of leadership. Babar recently returned as Pakistan’s Test skipper after replacing Shan Masood, whose tenure ended after 16 matches, during which Pakistan recorded four wins and suffered 12 defeats. The appointment marks Babar’s second stint as Test captain, having previously led the national side from 2020 to 2023. The PCB’s decision has generated considerable discussion among former players and cricket analysts, with opinions divided over whether the move will strengthen the team’s performance. Speaking during an interview with Wisden, Amir said he was not convinced that handing the captaincy back to Babar was the right decision, especially at a time when the batter had only recently regained his form after a prolonged lean patch. According to Amir, Babar’s improved performances with the bat should have been the team’s primary priority, rather than placing additional expectations on him through captaincy. “He has only just started performing well again after a long period. He’s finally looking in good rhythm,” Amir said, suggesting that leadership duties could once again distract him from maintaining consistency with the bat. The former left-arm pacer also highlighted the intense scrutiny faced by Pakistan’s captains, noting that media attention and public expectations make the role particularly demanding. He argued that every decision taken by the captain is closely examined, creating constant pressure both on and off the field. In his view, such an environment could affect a player’s confidence and performance if they are already carrying the responsibility of being the team’s leading batter. Amir, who represented Pakistan in 36 Tests, 61 One-Day Internationals and 62 T20 Internationals, described Babar as the country’s finest batter and said his greatest contribution comes through scoring runs. “I believe Babar should have played as a player with a free mind and less pressure because he is the best player Pakistan has right now,” he said. While stressing that his remarks reflected his personal opinion, Amir concluded that reappointing Babar as Test captain was not the ideal solution for Pakistan cricket. He added that protecting the team’s premier batter from additional pressure would have been a better long-term strategy as Pakistan looks to rebuild its Test fortunes.
