Pattaya Prepares Athletes for Eastern Region Student Games Qualifiers

PATTAYA – Pattaya City has begun preparations to send its young athletes to the 41st Thailand Local Administrative Organization Student Sports Competition, known as the “Krasa Games.”

Praeksa Subdistrict Municipality has been designated by the Department of Local Administration as host of the Eastern Region qualifying round. The event will take place from 15 to 24 October 2026 at the Praeksa Subdistrict Municipality Central Stadium. The national finals will be hosted by Chiang Mai City Municipality from 19 to 29 January 2027 in Chiang Mai Province.

At a recent coordination meeting, Pattaya officials reviewed the sports in which the city will compete, appointed team managers and coaches for each discipline, and discussed training schedules and competition arrangements.

Pattaya will field athletes in 14 sports: football, futsal, sepak takraw, indoor volleyball, beach volleyball, pétanque, athletics, badminton, Thai chess, Thai checkers, balance bike, e-sports (ROV), table tennis, and Go (as a demonstration sport). Events will be contested in male and female categories across different age groups.

Athlete selection trials are scheduled to begin next week, with the goal of identifying the strongest competitors to represent Pattaya at the regional qualifiers.

Mr. Siwat Boonkerd, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Pattaya City, stressed the paramount importance of athletes’ safety. This includes secure accommodation, safe transportation, and the provision of nutritious meals covering all five food groups in accordance with proper nutritional principles. These measures are intended to build the athletes’ physical strength and mental resilience to their full potential, ensuring they are fully prepared to compete in every sport and bring honour and pride to the people of Pattaya.

    The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has kept its policy rate unchanged at 11.5 per cent, maintaining the existing monetary policy stance amid concerns over economic growth. The central bank’s decision was largely expected by financial market analysts. Higher interest rates can help control inflation and support financial stability, but they can also increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. The SBP had reduced its policy rate by 50 basis points to 10.5pc in December 2025. It later raised the rate by 100 basis points to 11.5pc in April 2026. Since then, the central bank has maintained the rate at 11.5pc. Business groups have continued to call for a significant reduction in borrowing costs. They argue that lower interest rates could help businesses expand operations, increase investment and support economic activity. However, the central bank has opted for a cautious approach. Policymakers appear focused on maintaining overall economic stability while assessing inflation, growth and other financial indicators.

    Two policemen injured in Peshawar IED attack

    PESHAWAR: Two police personnel sustained minor injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near a police vehicle in Peshawar on Sunday, officials said. The blast occurred near Pir Zakorhi Bridge, close to the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway toll plaza, where a police van was travelling on routine duty. The explosion damaged the vehicle and left the driver and a police constable with minor injuries. Rescue teams and law enforcement officials quickly reached the site and shifted the injured officers to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities said both policemen were in stable condition and suffered only minor wounds. The Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) launched a search operation in the surrounding area after the explosion. Initial findings suggested that the explosive device had been planted along the roadside in a green belt and was detonated as the police vehicle passed by. Security personnel thoroughly scanned the area to ensure no additional explosive devices were present. Police cordoned off the scene and began collecting evidence to determine those responsible for the attack. An investigation has been launched, while officials are examining the nature of the explosive and the method used in the incident. The latest attack comes amid a surge in militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In recent days, several security personnel have lost their lives in separate terrorist attacks and counterterrorism operations in different parts of the province.

    PCB warns former cricketers over participation

      The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken serious notice of the participation of former Pakistani cricketers in the unauthorized Asian Legends League currently being held in Zambia. The board has announced strict disciplinary measures against any current or former player who participates in the event without obtaining prior approval through a No Objection Certificate (NOC). According to the PCB, the Asian Legends League is not recognized or approved by either the International Cricket Council (ICC) or the Zambia Cricket Union. As a result, the tournament is considered an unauthorized event, and players participating without official permission are deemed to be in violation of the board’s regulations. In an official statement, the PCB emphasized that all current and former Pakistani cricketers must obtain an NOC before taking part in any cricket event or league outside Pakistan. The board stressed that this requirement is in place to protect the integrity of the game, ensure player accountability, and maintain proper coordination with international cricket authorities. The PCB warned that any former cricketer found participating in the unauthorized league without receiving an NOC will face strict consequences. One of the key penalties announced by the board is a two-year ban on the issuance of any future NOCs. This means that players who violate the regulations will not be granted permission to participate in overseas cricket tournaments or exhibition events organized outside Pakistan during that period. In addition to restrictions on international participation, the PCB has also declared that individuals involved in the unauthorized league will be ineligible for coaching, mentoring, commentary, talent development, or any other official responsibilities associated with the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for two years. The decision reflects the board’s intention to ensure that those associated with unauthorized competitions do not continue to benefit from official roles within Pakistan’s cricket structure. The board’s statement serves as a strong reminder that compliance with PCB regulations is mandatory for all Pakistani cricketers, regardless of whether they are active professionals or retired players. The NOC system is designed to regulate players’ participation in foreign leagues, safeguard contractual obligations, and ensure that events meet international standards and receive recognition from the relevant governing bodies.     Oil tankers call off immediate strike as petroleum…

    A potential nationwide disruption to fuel transportation has been temporarily put on hold after Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister agreed to meet representatives of the Oil Tankers Contractors Association following the group’s 72-hour ultimatum. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 27, where both sides are expected to discuss the association’s long-standing demands and explore ways to prevent a countrywide strike. During a joint press conference, leaders of the Pakistan Oil Tankers and Contractors Association said they had repeatedly raised their concerns with the authorities over the past year and a half. They stated that if the government accepts their demands, they will formally announce the decision. However, if negotiations fail, they will unveil their next course of action, which could include a nationwide suspension of oil tanker operations. The association is demanding an immediate end to commercial loading practices and an increase in transportation rates. According to the representatives, oil tanker freight charges have remained unchanged for the past three years despite a sharp rise in operating expenses. They also pointed out that motorway and National Highway Authority (NHA) toll taxes have increased by nearly 180 percent during the same period, making current transport rates financially unsustainable. Association leaders further alleged that despite months of negotiations and official correspondence, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Petroleum Division failed to address their concerns, leaving them with no option but to threaten industrial action. The outcome of Monday’s meeting is expected to determine whether the dispute is resolved through dialogue or escalates into a nationwide strike that could affect fuel transportation and supply across the country.
