Protection of human life and property top priority, Salman Rafique

Lahore: On the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Provincial Minister and Chairman Cabinet Committee for Disaster Management Khawaja Salman Rafique visited the flood-affected areas and protective bunds of Jalalpur Pirwala. The Provincial Minister reviewed the flood arrangements and protective measures in detail. DG PDMA Saif Anwar Jappa also accompanied the Provincial Minister.

On this occasion, Provincial Minister and Chairman Cabinet Committee for Disaster Management Khawaja Salman Rafique said that the protection of human life and property is the top priority of the Punjab government, all institutions are on full alert.

Both the protective bunds Jalalpur Pirwala and Nooraja Bhatta have been constructed at a cost of about Rs 2 billion. To prevent floods and other natural disasters, modern machinery and rescue equipment worth billions of rupees have been provided to Rescue 1122 and other related departments.

The Punjab government has provided resources for flood prevention in all districts including Multan. Khawaja Salman Rafique inspected the flood embankments, rescue arrangements, evacuation plans and relief preparations on the spot.

Khawaja Salman Rafique also directed to ensure timely completion of safety projects and availability of all necessary resources. The provincial minister appreciated the performance of the commissioner, district administration and related institutions for making flood management more effective in the light of last year’s experiences.

Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan gave a comprehensive briefing to the provincial minister on the flood arrangements of Multan division. Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan informed about the permanent safety measures taken after last year’s flood.

On this occasion, Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan said that the 7.2-kilometer protective flood embankment of Jalalpur Pirwala has been completed. The protective embankment will protect Jalalpur Pirwala from the backflow of Chenab.

The flood contingency plan, evacuation plan and rescue plan have been fully implemented. For the first time this year, evacuation points and relief camps have been set up separately. Digital mapping of flood-affected areas, complete data of focal persons and resources have been prepared.

Rescue agencies have completed their exercises, the control room and all relevant agencies are on high alert. The current river situation is normal, however, there is full preparedness to deal with any emergency.

Member Punjab Assembly Lal Muhammad Joyia, Member Punjab Assembly MPA Nazk Karim Long, Deputy Commissioner Multan Dr. Faisal Saleem, Additional Commissioner Revenue Akhlaq Ahmed, Director Emergency Dr. Hussain Mian and Chief Engineer Anhar Muhammad Azeem were present.

    The Pakistan Peoples Party has accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz of electoral irregularities during the Azad Kashmir elections. PPP leaders made the allegations during a press conference in Islamabad on Monday. PPP leader Sharmila Faruqui alleged that the PML-N was attempting to form a government in Azad Kashmir through rigging. She questioned claims that migrant seats had already been secured by the ruling party. Faruqui also criticised the Punjab government over its spending priorities. She questioned the concentration of development funds in Lahore and asked what had been done for other parts of the province. She said the PPP had avoided politicising incidents involving collapsed roofs in Punjab. However, she called for stronger measures to protect women and children. Faruqui also raised concerns about crime and law enforcement in Punjab. She referred to an alleged incident involving a girl with a mental disability in Lahore and criticised the police response. She further alleged that the Crime Control Department had carried out hundreds of encounters. According to her, the department had conducted around 670 encounters. Faruqui questioned whether the government was giving sufficient importance to courts and due process. She also claimed that a large majority of reported child abuse cases had occurred in Punjab. The PPP leader questioned the effectiveness of governance in cities where children and vulnerable citizens do not feel safe. Another PPP leader, Shahla Raza, also accused the PML-N of manipulating the Azad Kashmir election process. Raza claimed that the PML-N had entered the elections expecting to secure around 12 seats. She alleged that irregularities were reported in several constituencies because the party feared an outcome similar to the political situation in Gilgit-Baltistan. Raza said the alleged incidents demonstrated serious concerns about the credibility of the electoral process. She claimed that the Election Commission had received 26 complaints before 1pm on election day. She also alleged that election-related material was taken from police personnel and that gunfire occurred during the incidents. Raza further claimed that a PPP member of the National Assembly was shot. The PPP leaders called for greater transparency in the electoral process. They also urged authorities to investigate complaints submitted during polling. PPP leader Palwasha Khan said her party remains an ally of the PML-N at the federal level. However, she stressed that the PPP would not remain silent if it believed that the government was taking an incorrect step. Khan said the president has constitutional powers regarding official summaries and can act according to the law. She made it clear that the PPP considers itself a political partner rather than a subordinate of the PML-N. She warned that the government could face difficulties in achieving its political objectives if it ignored concerns raised by its allies. The allegations have added to political tensions surrounding the Azad Kashmir elections. The PPP and PML-N are coalition partners at the federal level. However, differences between the two parties have emerged over the election process and political developments in Azad Kashmir. The allegations made by PPP leaders have not, by themselves, established that electoral fraud occurred. The claims are expected to be examined by the relevant electoral and legal authorities.

    Pakistan takes charge of UN disarmament conference

    Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD), taking a leading role in international discussions on arms control and global security. Additional Secretary for Arms Control and Disarmament Tahir Hussain Andrabi is representing Pakistan and will preside over the conference’s meetings during the presidency. Pakistan holds the final presidency of the CD’s 2026 session. It will therefore oversee the conclusion of the conference’s proceedings for the year and guide work on its annual report and the related resolution for the UN General Assembly’s First Committee. As part of the opening activities, Ambassador Andrabi chaired a meeting with former presidents of the conference for the 2026 session. He also held consultations with representatives of different regional groups. The Conference on Disarmament, headquartered at the United Nations Office in Geneva, is the principal multilateral forum for negotiating international disarmament and arms-control agreements. The forum has 65 member states, including countries that possess nuclear weapons. Its discussions cover some of the most sensitive issues affecting international peace and security. Key areas on its agenda include preventing a nuclear arms race, reducing the risk of nuclear war and stopping the weaponisation of outer space. The conference and its predecessor bodies have played a significant role in developing major international security agreements. These include the Biological Weapons Convention, Chemical Weapons Convention and Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Pakistan’s presidency comes at a time when nuclear risks, arms competition and emerging security challenges remain major concerns for the international community. The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s leadership of the conference reflects international confidence in its diplomatic role and its continued engagement in multilateral arms-control efforts.

    LESCO on high alert; urges public to follow electrical safety measures during monsoon

    Lahore: Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Muhammad Ramzan Butt, has expressed deep sorrow over recent electricity-related incidents and reaffirmed that the protection of human life remains the company’s highest priority. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by these unfortunate incidents and urged the public to strictly observe electrical safety precautions during the ongoing monsoon season. According to the LESCO spokesperson, a tragic incident occurred in the Islampura area where a citizen lost his life after receiving an electric shock near a streetlight pole during rainfall. Preliminary investigations revealed that an illegal electricity connection had been obtained through a damaged PVC service cable, allowing leakage current to energize the streetlight pole and resulting in the fatal accident. In another incident reported in the Sitara Colony Sub-Division, electricity was found leaking into a shop’s metal shed. Upon receiving the complaint, LESCO immediately shut down the relevant feeder and dispatched emergency teams to the site. Inspection confirmed that LESCO’s distribution system and service wires were in proper condition, while the leakage originated from the consumer’s own service wire joint, which had come into contact with the metal shed. The fault was promptly rectified, and the area was declared safe. In light of the ongoing monsoon rains across Lahore and other parts of the LESCO region, the company’s field staff, Power Distribution Control (PDC), Control Room, and operational officers have been placed on high alert under the directions of CEO Engineer Muhammad Ramzan Butt. LESCO is continuously monitoring the power distribution network to ensure the earliest possible restoration of electricity wherever weather-related faults occur. The spokesperson added that once weather conditions permit, LESCO teams immediately begin repair work while strictly following all safety protocols. Recently, after an 11kV feeder near Qaid-e-Azam Industrial Area, Kacha Jail Road was affected due to adverse weather conditions, emergency teams swiftly reached the site, isolated the feeder for safety, and initiated restoration work. Senior officers remained present in the field to supervise operations and ensure that power supply was restored to consumers in the shortest possible time. CEO Engineer Muhammad Ramzan Butt has directed all field personnel to perform their duties using complete personal protective equipment (PPE) and in accordance with established safety procedures. He also appealed to citizens to avoid illegal electricity connections, unsafe wiring, and substandard electrical installations, particularly during the rainy season. The public is strongly advised to stay away from electric poles, streetlights, broken or hanging wires, metal sheds, and other electrical installations during rainfall or in waterlogged areas. In case of any emergency or electricity-related hazard, citizens should immediately contact their nearest LESCO office or call the LESCO Helpline 118. LESCO remains fully committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining a reliable power supply throughout the monsoon season through timely response, continuous monitoring, and coordinated field operations.

    Rain continues across Sindh

    Intermittent rain continues to affect several parts of Sindh, including Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Badin, Thatta and Sujawal, bringing relief from the heat but also causing water accumulation in low-lying areas. In Mirpurkhas, persistent rainfall has flooded several low-lying localities, with rainwater entering homes and creating difficulties for residents. The situation has also disrupted routine activities in affected areas. Power supply has also been affected in parts of Mirpurkhas following a fault in a high-tension transmission line. Residents have faced electricity outages as efforts continue to address the technical issue and restore the supply. Weather conditions remain unsettled across southern and southeastern Sindh, where rain-bearing clouds continue to dominate the region. Further rainfall is possible in several areas as the weather system remains active. In Karachi, light rain and drizzle were reported in several parts of the city, including Quaidabad, Malir and Gulistan-e-Johar. The showers brought cooler conditions to some localities, while residents in other areas continued to experience cloudy and humid weather. Authorities and local administrations are monitoring the situation, particularly in low-lying areas where continued rainfall could lead to further water accumulation and temporary disruption to daily life.

    Malik Imran Khalil, Asif Butt elected unopposed as…

    LONDON: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has completed its 2026 intra-party elections in the United Kingdom, with Malik Imran Khalil elected unopposed as President of PTI UK. According to the official results issued by the PTI Overseas Election Commission, Rizwan Naseer was elected Senior Vice President, Faheem Malik became Information Secretary, Inamul Haque was chosen as Additional General Secretary, and Shagufta Akhtar was elected Women Secretary. Expressing gratitude after his election, Malik Imran Khalil thanked party members for unanimously backing his panel. He said the overwhelming support reflected the confidence of party workers and pledged to work for strengthening the organisation across the UK. In the North West chapter, Asif Butt was also elected unopposed as President, while his Junoon panel secured all key positions without contest. Chaudhry Bilal Gujjar was elected General Secretary, Rizwan Naseer became Senior Vice President, Suleman Ali Shah was chosen as Information Secretary, and Sanobar Zafar was elected Women Secretary. Asif Butt secured the PTI North West presidency for a third consecutive term. Thanking party supporters for their continued trust, he reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the party and said the organisation would continue its political campaign for the release of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.
