Modi calls for mercy as India moves past exam prot…

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for compassion toward students who participated in recent nationwide protests over a controversial examination paper leak, saying that punishment alone would not resolve the underlying issues that triggered one of the biggest political challenges of his third term.

In a video message shared on social media, Modi said he wanted to forgive students who shouted abusive slogans against him during demonstrations held across the country last month. He argued that dragging young protesters through lengthy legal proceedings would not help restore trust or address their concerns.

“These are misguided children. It is our responsibility to show them the right path,” Modi said. “Punishing them, making them appear repeatedly in court or subjecting them to social humiliation will not solve the problem.”

The protests erupted after the leak of national examination papers forced authorities to conduct a retest for nearly two million students, sparking widespread anger over transparency, fairness and employment opportunities for young people.

The demonstrations quickly spread to several cities, including the capital, New Delhi, where clashes broke out between protesters and security personnel. Police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse crowds attempting to march toward Parliament, while authorities registered cases against hundreds of demonstrators following incidents of violence and anti-government slogans.

The student-led movement, identifying itself as the Cockroach Janta Party, has claimed that hundreds of protesters were arrested across different states despite government assurances that police cases against demonstrators would be withdrawn.

Following weeks of sustained protests, the government accepted the movement’s key demands, including reforms to the examination system and the resignation of the education minister. The demonstrations were subsequently called off.

At the same time, the Modi government has moved to tighten laws against examination fraud by introducing new legislation in Parliament. The proposed bill seeks stricter punishments, including longer prison terms and heavier financial penalties, for individuals involved in leaking examination papers or manipulating public examinations.

Political analysts say Modi’s latest remarks appear aimed at easing tensions and encouraging national reconciliation after weeks of unrest. However, they note that public confidence will ultimately depend on the government’s ability to implement meaningful reforms that ensure transparent examinations and restore trust among millions of students preparing for competitive tests across India.

Punjab introduces new vehicle scrapping law for un…

The Punjab government has introduced a new law for vehicle scrapping, allowing unusable and damaged vehicles to be legally disposed of through registered scrapping facilities. The move aims to regulate the disposal of old vehicles and remove unfit vehicles from roads across the province. According to reports, Punjab Governor Saleem Haider issued the Motor Vehicles Amendment Ordinance, which provides a legal framework for scrapping vehicles that are no longer fit for use. Under the new ordinance, vehicles without valid fitness certificates may also be sent for scrapping. The law includes vehicles that have been severely damaged in accidents or destroyed by fire and are considered beyond repair. The new regulations allow vehicle owners to voluntarily apply for scrapping if they no longer want to keep their vehicles. However, the process must only be completed through officially registered vehicle scrapping facilities to ensure proper disposal and prevent misuse. Officials believe the new system will help improve road safety by reducing the number of unsafe vehicles operating on roads. Old and poorly maintained vehicles can contribute to accidents, environmental pollution, and increased risks for drivers and passengers. The ordinance also introduces a more organized approach to vehicle disposal, ensuring that scrapped vehicles are handled through approved channels rather than informal methods. Registered scrapping facilities will be responsible for carrying out the process according to legal requirements. Transport experts have welcomed measures aimed at removing dangerous vehicles from circulation, saying that proper vehicle inspection and disposal systems are essential for safer roads and better environmental management. The implementation of the new law is expected to impact owners of old, damaged, and unfit vehicles across Punjab. Vehicle owners will now have a legal option to dispose of vehicles that are no longer economically repairable or safe to operate. The government is expected to issue further guidelines regarding the registration of scrapping facilities and the detailed procedure for vehicle owners in the coming days. The new vehicle scrapping ordinance represents a significant change in Punjab’s transport regulations, with authorities focusing on road safety, environmental protection, and better management of end-of-life vehicles.

Gulf families seek fairer inheritance through UK law

Wealthy families in the Gulf are increasingly preparing wills under British law to reduce the difference between the inheritance shares traditionally allocated to sons and daughters under Islamic law. According to a report in a Western publication, some experts have described the emerging trend as “Shariah Lite”, referring to families using the flexibility offered by English succession law to distribute their wealth among their children on relatively equal terms. British lawyers say families are increasingly exploring these legal arrangements to protect the financial future of their children, particularly in cases where they have only daughters or where daughters outnumber sons. Under traditional Islamic inheritance rules, the shares received by male and female heirs can differ depending on the family structure and circumstances. The growing use of foreign legal frameworks allows wealthy families with international assets to consider alternative succession arrangements within the limits of applicable laws. Experts say several factors are contributing to the trend, including changing attitudes among younger generations, increasingly complex marital arrangements and political uncertainty across parts of the Gulf region. These developments have encouraged affluent families to pay greater attention to estate planning, asset protection and succession arrangements to ensure that their wealth remains within the family and is transferred according to their wishes. Gulf states are also introducing legal systems that offer foreign residents and some families alternatives to traditional Sharia-based procedures. Abu Dhabi, for example, has established a separate civil legal framework for matters including divorce, providing an alternative route outside the traditional Sharia system. The growing interest in British wills highlights the changing approach of some wealthy Gulf families toward inheritance and succession planning, as they seek greater control over how their assets are distributed among future generations.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim Trump suffered…

TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that international media outlets are increasingly portraying US President Donald Trump as having suffered a defeat in the conflict with Iran. In a statement, the IRGC said reports from various parts of the world were highlighting what it described as the failure of the United States to achieve its objectives against Iran. The Guards further claimed that the war had placed the Trump administration in a situation of its own making, with international coverage allegedly pointing to Washington’s difficulties in achieving its declared goals. According to the IRGC, recent agreements between the parties should not be viewed simply as diplomatic arrangements but as evidence of what it described as an American retreat in the face of Iran’s military capabilities and negotiating position. The Iranian force also maintained that the United States and Israel had failed to accomplish their stated objectives despite extensive military operations and accompanying media campaigns. The IRGC characterized the latest agreements as reflecting Iran’s ability to withstand military pressure and secure a stronger position at the negotiating table.
