monsoon eye care

Monsoon eye care tips

The monsoon season brings welcome relief from the summer heat but it also creates conditions that allow many illnesses to spread more easily.

Eye infections are one of the common health problems during this time. According to experts high humidity pollution and the growth of germs during the rainy season increase the risk of bacterial and viral eye infections.

Dust dirty rainwater pollution and allergy causing particles can easily irritate the eyes.  These factors may lead to redness swelling and discomfort making daily activities difficult.

Common symptoms of eye infections

Some of the most common signs of an eye infection include.

•Red eyes

•Swelling

•Eye pain

•Watery eyes

•Blurred vision

•Itching or irritation

If these symptoms become severe or do not improve it is important to see a doctor.

How to protect your eyes during the monsoon

Experts say that good hygiene is the best way to prevent eye infections.  Wash your hands regularly with soap and avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands.

Keeping your face and eyes clean can also lower the risk of infection.

If your eyes feel itchy or irritated do not rub them. Rubbing can spread germs and make the infection worse. Instead gently clean your eyes with a clean tissue or soft cloth.

Applying a clean warm compress over your closed eyes for a few minutes can help reduce discomfort and swelling. This can be done several times a day if needed.

Avoid sharing personal items

If you have an eye infection avoid using eye makeup until your eyes have fully healed.  If makeup must be used make sure brushes and other beauty tools are cleaned properly.

It is also important to wash bed sheets pillowcases and towels regularly with hot water and detergent.

Never share towels handkerchiefs or other personal items that come into contact with your eyes as infections can easily spread from one person to another.

When to see a doctor

If your symptoms get worse or do not improve after a few days avoid self treatment and consult an eye specialist.

A doctor may prescribe antibiotic or antiviral eye drops depending on the cause of the infection to help you recover safely and quickly.

Why August 12 total solar eclipse is so special?

The last total solar eclipse occurred two years ago and once again millions of people will have the opportunity to witness this rare celestial event. This year’s eclipse is particularly special because some observers will see the total solar eclipse at sunset making it an exceptionally rare and breathtaking sight. According to NASA, the total solar eclipse will occur on August 12 but only a limited number of countries will experience totality. People in Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and a small part of Portugal will be able to witness the total eclipse. In Spain, the eclipse will coincide with sunset creating a spectacular view that is expected to captivate skywatchers. A partial solar eclipse will also be visible across many other parts of Europe and Africa including most European countries and several regions of North Africa. Russia will enjoy another rare phenomenon as a partial eclipse will be visible at both sunrise and sunset. On the remote Taymyr Peninsula, the partial eclipse will begin at sunrise while in another part of the country it will be seen at sunset. Solar eclipses occurring at sunset are extremely rare which is one of the reasons why this year’s event is considered so unique. According to Pakistan Standard Time (PST), the partial solar eclipse will begin at 10:34 PM, the total eclipse will start at 12:12 AM and the event will conclude at 2:58 AM.

  • Scientists propose nuclear plan to stop Earth-bound asteroids

Beijing: Chinese scientists have proposed a new planetary defense strategy to deflect or destroy potentially hazardous asteroids that could collide with Earth. According to the proposed approach, placing a nuclear device inside an asteroid and detonating it could be one of the most effective ways to deal with a major impact threat. According to a report, researchers at the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology said that large asteroids have always posed a serious threat to human civilization. In the distant past, asteroid impacts caused mass extinctions and triggered devastating environmental changes. The scientists noted that astronomers have discovered several asteroids hundreds of meters wide passing very close to Earth in recent years prompting increased research into new planetary defense methods. The study suggests that a nuclear explosion could be the most effective strategy for either destroying a large asteroid or deflecting it away from Earth particularly when there is very little time to respond. Under the proposed plan, a spacecraft would first create a deep crater on the asteroid. A nuclear device would then be placed inside the crater and detonated to alter the asteroid’s trajectory or break it into smaller pieces. According to the research, a 100-meter-wide asteroid could be completely destroyed by an explosion with a yield equivalent to 200 times the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Similarly, detonating a nuclear device at a depth of 20 meters inside an asteroid about one kilometer wide could change its velocity enough for it to safely miss Earth. The researchers said the study could help pave the way for future planetary defense strategies against large near-Earth asteroids.

  • Natural face pack for facial hair

Many young women worry about fine facial hair and dull looking skin. Tiny facial hairs can make the skin appear less smooth while dry or dead skin cells may make the face look tired. Instead of using strong chemical products waxing or threading some people prefer simple home remedies made with natural ingredients.  One such homemade face pack uses rice flour milk sugar lemon juice and coconut oil. Ingredients •2–3 tablespoons rice flour •1 teaspoon sugar •A small amount of milk •Juice of half a lemon •A few drops of coconut oil How to make the face pack Put the rice flour in a clean bowl. Add sugar and a little milk then mix well until the sugar dissolves as much as possible. This step is important because undissolved sugar grains can make the skin more irritated when the mixture is rubbed or removed. Next add lemon juice and a few drops of coconut oil.  Mix everything until you get a smooth paste. How to use it Apply a thin layer of the mixture to your face and leave it for around 15–20 minutes until it dries. Remove it gently with light movements. Avoid rubbing the skin too hard as excessive scrubbing can cause irritation or small skin injuries. Rice flour and sugar may help remove dead skin cells from the surface.  Gentle massage may also remove some very fine facial hairs making the skin look temporarily smoother and brighter. Use with care This face pack may make the skin feel cleaner and smoother but there is limited scientific evidence that it can permanently reduce facial hair.  Facial hair growth is mainly affected by hormones and genetics. Lemon juice and repeated scrubbing may cause dryness redness burning or irritation especially in people with sensitive skin.  Lemon can also make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Do a patch test first Before applying any new homemade mixture to your entire face test a small amount on a small area of skin first.  If you notice itching burning swelling or redness wash it off and stop using it. For long term or unwanted facial hair growth safer hair removal options can be discussed with a dermatologist.
