Mushtaq Ahmad released after brief detention

Former Jamaat-e-Islami senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan was released on Thursday after his supporters claimed he had been held for more than 24 hours following his attempt to travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), where protests have intensified in recent days.

According to his team, Mushtaq Ahmad was stopped by authorities after being denied entry into AJK while travelling to express solidarity with families affected by the recent unrest. They alleged that he was later taken into custody while returning to Islamabad and remained out of contact for several hours before his release.

Following his release, his official social media account confirmed that he was safe and announced that he would address a press conference in Islamabad to share details of the incident.

Supporters claimed that he was intercepted near Kahuta by Punjab Police and taken away without any formal arrest warrant or explanation. They further alleged that authorities did not disclose his location during the period of detention, prompting concerns among family members and political colleagues.

The alleged detention triggered strong reactions from opposition leaders and rights advocates, who demanded transparency and adherence to legal procedures. Several political figures called for an explanation from the authorities, while human rights groups stressed the importance of protecting civil liberties and ensuring due process.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir following clashes between security personnel and protesters. The unrest has resulted in casualties and injuries, leading to widespread political criticism and renewed calls for an independent investigation into the violence.

Political parties have urged the government to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through dialogue, warning that excessive use of force could further inflame the situation.

Pralhad Joshi named India’s new education minister

India’s Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs Pralhad Joshi has been given the additional responsibility of the Education Ministry. The development comes after the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. His resignation was accepted by the Indian president, according to an official notification. The notification also confirmed Joshi’s appointment to the additional portfolio. He will continue to handle his existing responsibilities while overseeing the Education Ministry. Speaking to journalists after the appointment, Joshi said he accepted the new responsibility with humility and a strong sense of duty. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for placing his trust in him. Joshi also praised the Modi government’s performance during its 12 years in power. He said the government had achieved several important milestones during this period. He added that the education sector had also witnessed major developments. Joshi acknowledged the work carried out by Pradhan during his tenure as education minister. He said Pradhan had played an important role in implementing India’s National Education Policy. According to Joshi, several significant initiatives were introduced during the previous four to five years. He also said India had made considerable progress in moving towards a new education system. Joshi pledged to carry out his new duties with dedication. He said he would use his abilities to fulfil the responsibilities assigned to him. The change at the Education Ministry follows weeks of student protests across India. The demonstrations were linked to allegations of examination paper leaks and irregularities. Students had demanded action from the authorities and greater accountability within the education system. Pradhan submitted his resignation on the 35th day of the protests. The 57-year-old minister stepped down as pressure continued to grow over the controversy. The protests were largely driven by young people. Their campaign gained significant attention through social media and public demonstrations. Pradhan’s resignation was subsequently welcomed by the protesters, who had made his removal one of their major demands. The leadership change now places Joshi at the centre of efforts to address the concerns surrounding India’s education and examination system. Infantino’s future in doubt after FIFA rights controversy

FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing growing criticism after abandoning a controversial proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup, a move that has raised questions about his leadership and decision-making within world football’s governing body. The proposal sparked strong opposition from several football organizations, particularly regional confederations and professional leagues, who argued that such a major commercial decision should not have been pursued without broader consultation. Critics believe the plan exposed concerns over transparency and governance at FIFA. Claudius Schaefer, the chairman of the organization representing 53 professional men’s and women’s football leagues across Europe and the chief executive of the Swiss Football League, said the handling of the proposal had seriously damaged confidence in FIFA’s leadership. According to Schaefer, the situation would have significant consequences in most organizations, especially when a senior executive advances a major business initiative without informing or involving key governing bodies. He suggested that the controversy has left Infantino’s position under increased scrutiny. The proposal was officially withdrawn after widespread resistance from football stakeholders. The decision came following criticism from various regional football confederations, with UEFA and CONCACAF publicly expressing that they had lost confidence in Infantino’s leadership after the episode. Schaefer argued that the failed proposal reflected a broader concern about FIFA’s priorities. He said the organization appeared increasingly focused on generating greater commercial revenue rather than protecting the long-term interests of football competitions, players, clubs, and domestic leagues. He also warned that expanding commercial opportunities could encourage FIFA to create even larger tournaments and increase the number of international matches. Such developments, he said, would place additional pressure on an already crowded football calendar. Professional leagues have repeatedly voiced concerns over fixture congestion, arguing that players are being asked to participate in too many matches throughout the season. Domestic competitions, they say, often bear the consequences when international tournaments continue to expand. Schaefer emphasized that national leagues remain the foundation of professional football and should not be weakened by decisions aimed primarily at increasing commercial returns. He argued that any future reforms to international competitions must balance financial objectives with the welfare of players and the health of domestic football. Another major point of criticism centered on FIFA’s decision-making process. Schaefer claimed that even members of the FIFA Council—the organization’s highest decision-making body—were reportedly unaware of the proposal before it became public. He described this lack of consultation as surprising and said it raised serious concerns about governance within FIFA. The controversy has intensified calls for greater transparency and accountability in football administration. Many stakeholders believe decisions involving the commercial future of the World Cup should involve extensive discussion with FIFA’s governing bodies, member associations, leagues, and other key partners before being considered. Although FIFA has now withdrawn the proposal, the fallout continues to fuel debate over leadership, governance, and the future direction of world football. With criticism coming from influential football organizations across different regions, pressure remains on Infantino to rebuild trust and demonstrate a more inclusive approach to decision-making on matters affecting the global game.

Putin visits Japan-claimed Islands, Tokyo protests

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Iturup, one of the disputed Kuril Islands claimed by Japan, in a move likely to further strain relations between Moscow and Tokyo and revive attention on a decades-old territorial dispute. Russian state media reported on Thursday that Putin travelled to Iturup after overseeing major naval exercises in Russia’s Far East. The visit was described by state news agency TASS as Putin’s first in-person trip to the island chain. Iturup, known as Etorofu in Japan, is among four islands that Tokyo calls the Northern Territories and considers its inherent territory. The territorial dispute has prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal peace treaty to officially end the state of war left over from World War II. During his visit, Putin toured the Yasny fish-processing plant, where officials briefed him on the local fishing industry and the movement of fish in the surrounding waters. Russian television footage showed the president examining large tuna and halibut before sampling local fish roe. Putin also spoke with local residents, praising the island’s weather and comparing it with a resort. His informal interaction with residents highlighted Moscow’s efforts to portray the disputed territory as an active and integrated part of Russia. Japan responded sharply to the visit. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Tokyo had lodged a strong protest, insisting that the Northern Territories, including Etorofu, belong to Japan based on history and international law. The visit came at a particularly sensitive moment in East Asia. A day earlier, North Korea, a Russian ally, fired a ballistic missile towards waters off the Korean Peninsula. The launch occurred shortly before major joint military exercises involving the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned. Putin’s appearance on Iturup also followed Russian naval drills in the Far East, adding a military dimension to an already sensitive diplomatic dispute. The latest development underscores the continuing complexity of Russia-Japan relations. Despite periods of diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation, the unresolved island issue remains a major obstacle to a formal postwar peace agreement. For Tokyo, Putin’s visit represents another challenge to its territorial claims. For Moscow, the high-profile trip reinforces its control over the disputed islands and signals that the territorial question remains firmly within Russia’s strategic agenda.

Rare star explosion creates mysterious gas bullets…

Astronomers have made a remarkable discovery in the Milky Way after observing a rare exploding star releasing extremely fast-moving streams of gas. Scientists have described these unusual formations as cosmic “bullets” because of their incredible speed and shape. According to a new study, the gas material is being expelled from the star system at speeds of nearly 20 million miles per hour, creating a phenomenon that has never been observed in this way before, either in our galaxy or in other known stellar explosions. The discovery involves a rare helium nova known asV445 Puppis, which has been under observation for more than two decades. Scientists were able to study the star in greater detail after the surrounding cloud of dust became less dense, revealing new information about the unusual explosion taking place around it. Researchers from the University of Warwick confirmed that V445 Puppis is the only known helium nova of its kind in the Milky Way. The system consists of a white dwarf star that is collecting helium fuel from a rare companion star, eventually triggering an extraordinary stellar eruption. Unlike typical stellar explosions, this event involves the release of helium-rich material, creating powerful and unusual gas streams that have surprised researchers. The exact nature of these mysterious “bullets” and the process responsible for producing them are still not fully understood. Scientists believe that studying this rare phenomenon could provide valuable insights into how unusual stellar explosions occur and how stars evolve under extreme conditions. Understanding these events may also help researchers learn more about the behavior of white dwarfs and their role in shaping the evolution of galaxies. The discovery of V445 Puppis represents a significant step forward in astronomy, as it offers scientists a rare opportunity to examine a type of cosmic event that has never been observed in such detail before. Further observations will be needed to determine how these high-speed gas formations are created and what their long-term impact may be on the surrounding space environment. For astronomers, the mysterious “bullets” from this exploding star remain one of the most fascinating discoveries in recent cosmic research.

The premises is located near the place where Mir Raza’s body was recovered. According to investigation findings, the guest house was registered in the name of a man identified as Liaquat Ali. The property itself is reportedly owned by a woman. Police verification of the property was carried out on June 1, 2026. Investigators also found that the guest house was not registered on the Hotel Eye application. Police had made registration on the system mandatory for hotels and guest houses. After the discovery of Mir Raza’s body, police sealed the guest house. Six people working at the premises were taken into custody for questioning. Their statements are being recorded as investigators try to determine whether the guest house has any connection with the case. So far, police have detained 21 people in connection with the investigation. The detainees include Mir Raza’s friends and business partners. Investigators are examining their statements and movements. A five-member investigation committee also held a meeting under the leadership of DIG Crime Branch Amir Farooqi. The committee is reviewing the case in light of new medical and forensic evidence. Police have also expanded the charges in the case. Sections 365 and 302 were already included in the FIR. Section 201 has now been added. The provision relates to concealing, removing or destroying evidence connected to an offence. The development follows a second post-mortem conducted after Mir Raza’s grave was exhumed on August 8. The preliminary medical findings reportedly showed several injuries on his body. The report indicated a gunshot injury to the back. The entry wound was smaller, while the wound on the front side was larger. Medical findings suggest that the bullet entered from the rear and passed through the body. The examination also found fractured ribs. Several injuries were observed on Mir Raza’s head and face. A wound and fracture measuring about 12 centimetres were found on his right thigh. Blood marks were also detected in tissues in the lower part of his body. A gunshot wound was also found on his chest. Investigators also found that Mir Raza’s social media accounts had been deactivated a day before his body was recovered. His family has consistently maintained that he was murdered. His father said Mir Raza was preparing for his marriage and was excited about starting a new phase of his life. His nikah had been scheduled for August 30 at Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The latest investigation has brought renewed attention to the guest house and the people associated with it. Police are now examining medical evidence, forensic samples, CCTV footage, statements and other available material.

  • Punjab Police’s Gujranwala division faces media communication gaps

GUJRANWALA: Punjab Police’s Gujranwala division has a public relations setup in place, but journalists covering the region say the system is failing at the most basic task providing timely and accessible official information. Journalists covering police affairs across Gujranwala division say contacting the concerned PRO for the police version of an incident has become a frustrating exercise, with calls and messages frequently going unanswered. The problem becomes more serious when reporters are working on developing stories involving arrests, FIRs, police encounters, alleged misconduct or other sensitive matters where the police version is essential before publication. According to journalists, the issue is not simply about the availability of press releases. The police communication mechanism largely revolves around a WhatsApp group where official information is circulated, but there is little effective two-way communication when journalists need clarification or an immediate response. “Information is posted in the group, but when a journalist needs to ask a question or verify an incident, getting a response is often difficult,” said a journalist covering police affairs in the division. Another journalist said the communication gap had become particularly noticeable during breaking incidents, when reporters need the official version within minutes rather than hours. The frequent changes of PRO officials have further complicated the situation, journalists say. According to them, PROs are changed so frequently that journalists are often left uncertain about whom to approach for official comments. “By the time a working relationship develops with one PRO, another officer is assigned the responsibility,” a journalist said. The situation raises questions about the effectiveness of the PRO system itself. A police public relations officer is not merely responsible for forwarding press releases; the position also serves as a communication bridge between the police department and the media. When that bridge fails to function, journalists can be left with incomplete information while the police department risks losing an opportunity to present its official position. The problem is particularly important in a region where police operations regularly generate public interest. Arrests, encounters, recoveries, FIRs and allegations against police personnel all require timely verification and an official response. Journalists say the regional police command should establish a stable and clearly accessible media contact mechanism instead of relying primarily on a WhatsApp group for communication. The Punjab Police authorities and senior officers of Gujranwala division should also review the frequent changes in PRO assignments and assess whether the existing arrangement is delivering the level of media coordination expected from a major regional police formation. Without timely communication, the PRO system risks becoming a one-way information desk rather than the professional media liaison mechanism it is supposed to be.
