NADRA officials arrested in Afghan document scam

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested four individuals in Karachi for their alleged involvement in preparing fake documents for Afghan citizens.

According to FIA officials, the arrested suspects include employees of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and other individuals allegedly linked to the illegal activity.

The FIA said the suspects were involved in creating unauthorized and forged documents for Afghan nationals. Officials believe the network was operating by misusing official systems and resources.

The arrested individuals include a NADRA Assistant Director and Deputy Assistant Director. A NADRA security guard and another person were also taken into custody during the operation.

FIA officials said the arrests were made after an investigation into the illegal preparation of identity documents. The agency is now conducting further inquiries to determine the scope of the network and identify other people involved.

The investigation will also examine how official procedures were allegedly bypassed and whether more officials were connected to the document fraud.

The FIA has intensified action against individuals involved in making fake identity documents, saying such activities pose serious security risks and undermine the national registration system.

Further legal action will be taken after the completion of the investigation, officials added.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has urged political parties to keep their differences within the bounds of democratic competition, saying political rivalry should never turn into personal hostility. Addressing a meeting of the PML-N Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) parliamentary party in Murree, Nawaz congratulated the candidates who won seats in the AJK elections and called for greater financial support for the region. However, he cautioned that the party must deliver on its promises to retain that trust. “If the PML-N fails to deliver, the people here will become disappointed,” he said. The former prime minister stressed the need to improve roads, hospitals and other basic facilities across AJK. He said children in the region should also have access to modern educational opportunities and technology, including laptops. Nawaz credited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts for the country’s ongoing development, saying Pakistan was moving forward. He called for AJK to experience similar progress and said the region should develop along the lines of Punjab. He stressed that the PML-N could not afford to disappoint voters who had placed their confidence in the party. Nawaz also expressed concern over complaints that emerged during the political process involving the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He said he had not expected the PPP to provide an opportunity for complaints, particularly given that the party had previously led the AJK government. “Some complaints reached us, and I was saddened by them,” Nawaz said, while emphasising the need for political parties to maintain respectful relations despite their differences. He said previous AJK governments had failed to fully meet public expectations and stressed that improving the welfare and living standards of the region’s people should remain the top priority. Nawaz maintained that the PML-N would continue to focus on development and public service while working to strengthen its political position in AJK.

    Bangladesh hands ODI captaincy to Litton Das, drops Mehidy

    Bangladesh has a new face leading its One-day International side. Litton Das has officially taken over ODI captaincy duties from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirming the change on Wednesday. The decision comes not long after Bangladesh suffered a series defeat against Zimbabwe earlier this month. It is worth noting that the shift only affects the ODI format. Najmul Hossain will keep his position as Test captain, so the two roles remain separate. Litton was already Bangladesh’s T20 captain before this appointment. With this move, he now leads two of the three formats, while the board continues its approach of splitting captaincy responsibilities. Board president Tamim Iqbal explained that having separate leaders for white-ball and red-ball cricket was part of preparations for next year’s ODI World Cup, which South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe will jointly host. Tamim spoke positively about Mehidy’s time as captain, highlighting his strong results across several series. Still, he pointed to a dip in Mehidy’s batting form as the main reason behind the change. He mentioned having a conversation with Mehidy directly and said the outgoing captain was understanding of the board’s decision. Mehidy stepped into the ODI captaincy role about a year ago, replacing Najmul, who had briefly captained the team in all three formats. During his tenure, Bangladesh secured ten wins out of twenty ODIs. The early stretch of his captaincy was difficult, with the team losing several matches in a row. Things improved significantly afterward, as Bangladesh strung together four consecutive series wins at home against the West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia. That momentum slowed following the away series loss to Zimbabwe. This is not new territory for Litton either. He previously captained Bangladesh in seven ODIs, a stretch that included a memorable series win over India in 2022. Tamim also addressed questions surrounding Bangladesh’s proposed home series against India in September. He said he remained hopeful the tour would proceed, describing Bangladesh as a safe environment for visiting teams. He added that talks with India’s cricket board had been going well and that more clarity was expected soon. This uncertainty follows an earlier standoff, when Bangladesh’s previous board opted out of playing in India during this year’s T20 World Cup due to security concerns tied to a Bangladeshi bowler’s IPL release.     Goods transporters begin indefinite strike across …

    The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance has announced an indefinite strike across Pakistan from Saturday, August 8, in protest against rising fuel prices and additional financial burdens on the transport sector. Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan confirmed the strike and said goods transporters would continue keeping their vehicles off the roads until further decisions were made. He said the federal government had invited representatives of the transport alliance to a meeting on Monday to discuss their concerns. Awan said a committee had been formed to represent the transporters during talks with government officials. He added that the strike would continue until the meeting was held and the alliance announced its next course of action. According to Awan, earlier negotiations between the transport alliance and government officials at the commissioner’s office had failed to resolve the dispute. Following the unsuccessful talks, the transporters decided to proceed with their planned indefinite strike. The alliance is protesting against higher petrol and diesel prices. It is also opposing the government’s decision to determine petroleum product prices on a daily basis. Another major demand concerns the seven percent withholding tax imposed on the transport sector. Transporters say rising fuel costs and additional taxes have increased their operating expenses and created serious financial difficulties for the industry. They have urged the government to review the current policies and provide relief to the transport sector. The transporters have warned that the strike could affect the movement of goods across the country if the dispute continues. Goods transporters play a major role in supplying food, industrial products, raw materials and other essential items to markets and businesses. A prolonged strike could therefore put pressure on supply chains and affect the availability and transportation of essential goods in different areas. The government’s scheduled meeting with the transport alliance on Monday is expected to determine the next course of action. Transport representatives will present their demands during the talks and seek a solution to the ongoing dispute.

Market analysts say changes in global demand, investor sentiment, and economic developments continue to impact bullion prices on a daily basis. Traders expect gold prices to remain sensitive to international market trends in the coming days, with further fluctuations possible depending on global economic data and investor activity.

    Pakistan dismisses Indian defence minister’s Azad Kashmir threats as attempt to hide domestic turmoil

    Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has forcefully rejected comments by his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, who declared that New Delhi would only hold talks on Azad Kashmir, claimed the Pakistani-administered region as an “integral part of India”, and warned that any attempt to undermine Indian sovereignty would invite a “decisive response” from its armed forces.     Lawyer and social activist Jibran Nasir has criticised the country’s political and economic situation, alleging that pressure, censorship and coercive measures have failed to change public opinion about PTI founder Imran Khan. Speaking to anchorperson Ameer Abbas, Nasir said authorities had been unable to alter public sentiment toward Imran Khan despite what he described as years of pressure and attempts to control political discourse. He argued that if public opinion had genuinely changed, millions of people would not have voted for Imran Khan and his political movement in the February 8 general elections. Nasir questioned how the authorities could claim to change broader public thinking about the economy, Constitution and rule of law when they had not been able to change people’s views about a single political leader. He also criticised what he described as restrictions on political expression and media freedom. Nasir alleged that force, state pressure, censorship and arrests were being used to control political developments. According to Nasir, suppressing criticism does not resolve underlying public grievances. He said people who speak about alleged injustices are sometimes portrayed as creating unrest rather than being allowed to raise their concerns. He warned that continued reliance on pressure could increase frustration among citizens instead of resolving political differences. Nasir further claimed that people were now more aware of political developments and could not easily be persuaded through fear or restrictions. He said arrests, cases and harsh measures had not succeeded in changing the position of a significant section of the public. The lawyer maintained that political issues could not be permanently controlled through force. He called for greater space for political expression and a process through which public grievances could be addressed. His comments come amid continued political tensions between the government and PTI. The party has repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of its leadership, legal cases against its members and restrictions on political activities.
