Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has paid tribute to the police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, saying their courage and sacrifices represent a proud and unforgettable chapter in Pakistan’s national history.

In a statement, the interior minister described the martyrs of the police force as the nation’s true heroes, saying the people of Pakistan will always remember their services and sacrifices. He highlighted the crucial role police officers and personnel have played in maintaining peace and protecting citizens across the country.

Naqvi said the police force has shown remarkable courage and determination in the fight against terrorism and crime. He praised the officers and जवान who continue to perform their duties under challenging and dangerous circumstances to protect lives and maintain law and order.

The interior minister added that the sacrifices of police martyrs have made a lasting contribution to the country’s peace, security and stability. He said the nation remains deeply grateful to the brave officers and personnel who gave their lives while serving the country.

Mohsin Naqvi further said Pakistanis salute the courage and dedication of the police martyrs and their families, whose sacrifices continue to inspire the nation. He stressed that the services of those who laid down their lives for peace and security will remain a source of pride for the country.

    KARACHI: The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has reassured residents that the unusually strong smell of natural gas reported in several parts of Karachi is the result of routine testing linked to a new pipeline project and not due to any gas leak. In a statement issued on Sunday, the utility company said the odor was caused by the temporary addition of a higher-than-normal concentration of odorant during the commissioning of a new gas pipeline near Abul Hasan Ispahani Road. According to SSGC, the testing of odorisation plants forms a standard part of the commissioning process to ensure that natural gas can be easily detected by smell in the event of future leaks. The company emphasized that gas system pressures remain stable and that no leakage has been detected anywhere in the network. The stronger odor prompted numerous complaints from residents across different neighborhoods, many of whom feared a possible gas leak. However, SSGC clarified that the smell was expected during the testing phase and did not pose any immediate safety risk. “The system is operating under normal conditions, and no gas leakage has been reported,” the company said, urging consumers to remain calm and continue their daily activities without concern. Officials explained that odorants, which are harmless chemical compounds, are intentionally added to naturally odorless gas to help people quickly identify leaks. During commissioning and testing, the quantity of odorant may temporarily increase, resulting in a stronger smell than usual. The clarification comes amid heightened public sensitivity over gas safety following several incidents in recent years involving gas leaks and explosions in Karachi. In April this year, a local court held SSGC responsible for negligence in connection with a 2022 gas explosion in Orangi Town’s Millat Colony, which claimed the lives of two residents. The court directed the company to pay Rs30 million in compensation to the affected family after concluding that repeated complaints about gas leakage had not been addressed adequately. Against that backdrop, Sunday’s reports of a strong gas smell quickly attracted public attention and triggered concerns on social media. SSGC said it remains committed to maintaining a safe and reliable gas distribution system and advised consumers to report any actual signs of leakage, such as hissing sounds or damaged pipelines, through its emergency helpline. The company added that technical teams would continue monitoring the network while pipeline commissioning and testing activities are completed.

    GUJRAT: A high-level visit by Punjab Secretary for Health and Population Nadia Saqib to Gujrat triggered a major administrative shake-up, resulting in the transfer of senior health officials and a newly appointed medical superintendent, while the office of a patients welfare association at Civil Hospital Jalalpur Jattan was sealed. The secretary visited Gujrat to review the Community Health Inspectors (CHI) programme and attended a training workshop for field staff. Addressing community health inspectors, she stressed the importance of improving primary healthcare services, community engagement and effective field monitoring. The workshop was attended by Deputy Director Khalid Sharif, Additional Secretary (Technical) Dr Zohaib Hassan, Project Director PFPP Captain Usman and Additional Director PIU Dr Farrukh Amin. During the visit, Nadia Saqib also inspected Civil Hospital Jalalpur Jattan to review administrative affairs and healthcare services. According to well-placed sources, the secretary expressed serious displeasure after learning that the recent appointment of Dr Shehzad Gul as Medical Superintendent (MS) of Civil Hospital Jalalpur Jattan had been made without the matter coming to her notice. Sources claimed she questioned the appointment during the inspection and sought an explanation from local health authorities. Soon after the visit, Chief Executive Officer (Health) Gujrat Dr Atta-ul-Munim was transferred and posted as Senior Medical Officer (SMO) in Bahawalnagar. Officials familiar with the matter said the transfer order was issued immediately following the inspection. In another significant development, Dr Shehzad Gul, who had only recently assumed charge as Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Jalalpur Jattan, was transferred and posted as Medical Officer in Attock. The inspection also resulted in action against the office of Anjuman-e-Behbood-e-Mareezan operating within Civil Hospital Jalalpur Jattan. According to sources, the office was sealed during or after the visit following concerns that it was functioning in a manner inconsistent with its intended welfare role. Sources alleged that the office had effectively been operating like a business despite the fact that medicines required for patients are supplied free of cost through the government hospital. They claimed the matter was brought to the secretary’s attention during the inspection, prompting immediate action. The Health Department has not officially stated the reasons behind sealing the office. Meanwhile, sources indicated that further administrative changes could be on the cards, with the transfer of the District Health Officer (DHO) Gujrat also being considered, although no notification had been issued until late Thursday. No official spokesperson for the Punjab Health Department issued a detailed statement linking the transfers or the sealing of the office to disciplinary proceedings. Efforts to obtain comments from the transferred officials were unsuccessful. The developments have generated considerable discussion within Gujrat’s health sector, where employees view the latest decisions as part of a wider push for administrative accountability and stricter oversight of public health institutions. The secretary’s visit is being seen as a clear message that governance, transparency and adherence to departmental procedures will remain central to the provincial government’s healthcare reform agenda.
