West Indies post 344 as Sajid Khan shines, Pakistan face must-win Test

PORT OF SPAIN: Pakistan’s hopes of leveling the two-match Test series remain alive after restricting the West Indies to 344 all out on the opening innings of the second Test, thanks largely to an impressive four-wicket haul from off-spinner Sajid Khan.

After winning the toss at Port of Spain, West Indies captain Roston Chase opted to bat first, a decision that paid dividends as his side produced several valuable partnerships to build a competitive first-innings total.

Middle-order batter Justin Greaves led the resistance with a composed 73, while captain Chase contributed a determined 70 to anchor the innings. Opener Brandon King added 46, with Shai Hope making 29 and Amir Jangoo chipping in with 26.

Pakistan’s bowlers, however, fought back effectively after the hosts appeared set for an even bigger total. Sajid Khan emerged as the standout performer, using sharp turn and disciplined lines to finish with four wickets and halt West Indies’ progress at crucial moments.

Fast bowlers Obaid Shah, Mohammad Ali and Ali Usman also made significant contributions, claiming two wickets each to ensure the home side was bowled out for 344.

Speaking at the toss, Pakistan captain Babar Azam revealed that he would also have chosen to bat first had he won the toss. He expressed confidence in his squad, saying the team was determined to play positive cricket and bounce back strongly after losing the opening Test.

On the other hand, Roston Chase said his team wanted to turn its home ground into a fortress and therefore retained the same playing XI for the crucial encounter.

The second Test carries enormous significance for Pakistan, who trail 1-0 in the two-match series. A victory is essential to square the series, while another defeat would hand the West Indies an emphatic series triumph.

With the hosts setting a challenging target of 344 in the first innings, all eyes are now on Pakistan’s batting lineup. The visitors will need a disciplined and resilient performance to seize control of the contest and keep their hopes of salvaging the series alive.

Bjarne Schieldrop, chief analyst at SEB Research, said the prospect of prolonged US pressure on Iran had increased uncertainty in the oil market. He noted that the latest developments offered little indication of a quick return to normal conditions in the region. US pressure raises supply concerns Oil markets reacted strongly after the United States warned on Thursday that its naval blockade of Iran could continue indefinitely while Washington considers additional economic measures against Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration was preparing further measures aimed at increasing economic pressure on Iran, signalling that Washington could take steps beyond those already announced. Schieldrop said expectations for a rapid restoration of regular shipping through the Strait of Hormuz had weakened significantly as a result of the latest developments. Strait of Hormuz traffic under pressure Shipping activity through the strategic waterway declined below the monthly average toward the end of the week as tensions increased and both sides issued competing claims regarding control of the passage. Market participants are closely monitoring developments in the strait because even a partial disruption could force vessels to take longer and more expensive alternative routes. Demand outlook limits oil gains Despite the immediate supply concerns, expectations of weaker global oil demand growth are acting as a counterweight to the price rally. Recent forecasts from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have pointed towards slower growth in oil consumption, suggesting that demand may not be strong enough to absorb a prolonged increase in prices without affecting economic activity. US inventory data also provided a bearish signal. American crude stockpiles recorded their biggest weekly increase in more than three and a half years, indicating that supplies in the world’s largest oil-consuming economy remain relatively comfortable. Norbert Rucker, head of economics and next-generation research at Julius Baer, said recent reports from the IEA and US Energy Information Administration showed that oil storage levels were holding up better than markets had initially feared. According to Rucker, stronger-than-expected inventories could eventually put downward pressure on crude prices if geopolitical risks ease. For now, however, the possibility of further escalation between Washington and Tehran is keeping traders focused on supply risks. The market is expected to remain highly sensitive to developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, particularly any signs of prolonged restrictions on tanker movements.     A unique football themed event in New York City celebrated the FIFA World Cup by setting a new Guinness World Record for the world’s longest foosball table. The record was created by Teremana Tequila which built a giant foosball table measuring 525 feet in length. The table was about the same size as 112 standard foosball tables placed end to end. The massive table was installed on a street in Brooklyn on July 11, where dozens of players took part in games at the same time. Its impressive size stretched beyond a full city block attracting large crowds and plenty of attention. Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric attended the event and officially confirmed the achievement after checking all measurements and record requirements. Empric said the event was a success despite the hot weather.  He added that the giant foosball table was an amazing sight and looked even longer than an entire city block. The new record broke the previous world record set in Turkey in 2023 where the longest foosball table measured 497 feet 8.4 inches. Instead of throwing the table away after the event organizers announced they would cut it into several standard sized foosball tables. These tables will be donated to community and recreation centers across the United States giving children and young people more opportunities to enjoy the game. The record setting event not only celebrated football but also showed how sports can bring people together while supporting local communities.
