US makes visa bond programme permanent, raises limit to $20,000

The United States has announced that its visa bond programme will become permanent, introducing stricter financial requirements for certain foreign travellers seeking business and tourist visas.

Under the new policy, US consular officers will have the authority to require applicants from 50 countries to post a refundable bond of up to $20,000 before a visa is issued. The programme applies to B1 (business) and B2 (tourist) visas and is aimed at reducing the number of visitors who overstay their visas.

According to a notice published in the Federal Register, the decision follows the completion of a pilot programme launched in 2025. Officials said the trial demonstrated that visa bonds could be an effective tool for improving compliance with US immigration rules. The new regulation will officially take effect on August 3.

During the pilot phase, applicants could be asked to pay bonds of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. The updated rule removes the $5,000 option and increases the maximum bond amount to $20,000, giving consular officers greater discretion when assessing visa applications.

The programme covers citizens of 50 countries, with 30 of those nations located in Africa. US authorities say the selection is based on factors such as visa overstay rates and immigration compliance.

The move is part of President Donald Trump’s broader immigration agenda, which focuses on tightening border controls and strengthening enforcement of immigration laws. The administration argues that stricter visa policies are necessary to protect national security and discourage individuals from remaining in the United States beyond the period allowed by their visas.

However, immigration advocates and civil rights organisations have criticised the decision, saying the higher financial burden could discourage legitimate travellers, including tourists and business visitors, from applying for US visas. They also argue that recent immigration measures have made legal entry into the United States increasingly difficult through higher fees, expanded social media screening, and stricter visa requirements.

Moroccan businessman’s death reignites Italy migration debate

BOLOGNA: The death of a Moroccan businessman during a police restraint in the Italian city of Bologna has reignited Europe’s heated debate over migration, policing and the treatment of immigrants, with the case exposing the deeply personal human stories often overshadowed by political rhetoric. The incident comes as European governments face mounting pressure over migration policies. Just days after thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced plans to suspend a free-movement agreement with Spain, reinforcing her government’s tough stance on immigration. Amid the political storm, the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan-born entrepreneur who had spent most of his life in Italy, has become a symbol of the broader tensions surrounding migration and law enforcement. Videos recorded by local residents on July 19 showed police officers restraining Fakir face down on the ground for several minutes after responding to reports of a distressed man behaving erratically in a residential area. The footage, which quickly spread across social media, sparked widespread public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct. Authorities said officers were responding to emergency calls about a man shouting, kicking garage doors and striking a vehicle. An autopsy and official investigations into the officers’ actions remain ongoing, while four Red Cross volunteers who were present are also under review. The tragedy triggered thousands of peaceful protesters to gather in Bologna, demanding accountability and justice for Fakir’s family. However, demonstrations later turned violent when a small group clashed with police, leaving dozens of officers injured and further intensifying political divisions. Friends, relatives and lawyers describe Fakir as far more than the image portrayed in political debates. Having arrived in Italy from Morocco at the age of six, he built a successful life, eventually owning a small metalworking company after years of hard work. Behind that success, however, he had been battling severe anxiety. According to his lawyer, Fakir feared deportation after complications involving his residency permit, despite living in Italy for nearly four decades. He had also been struggling financially as his business declined, forcing him to lay off several employees. Family members said he concealed his emotional pain, insisting everything was fine even as he sought psychiatric assistance weeks before his death. Sociologists argue that Fakir’s story highlights the dangers of reducing migration to political slogans while ignoring the human lives behind the headlines. As Italy awaits the outcome of official investigations, his family says they continue to trust the country’s justice system and hope the full truth surrounding his final moments will emerge.

Anas Sarwar joins UK Cabinet as Trade Minister

Anas Sarwar has resigned as leader of the Scottish Labour Party after accepting the post of Minister of State for Trade in Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s government. The move ends his five-year leadership of the party and opens a new chapter in his political career at the national level. Sarwar confirmed that he will step down from the Scottish Parliament and will receive a life peerage, allowing him to take a seat in the House of Lords. From there, he will serve as a minister in the UK government and take responsibility for trade-related matters. In a statement, Sarwar said it was a great honour to be asked to join the government. He said public service has always been the driving force behind his political career. He added that serving the entire United Kingdom in the new role is a responsibility he accepts with humility and determination. Sarwar also reflected on Scottish Labour’s disappointing performance in the recent Scottish Parliament elections. The party won only 17 seats in the 129-member parliament, its worst result on record. He admitted that he shares responsibility for the defeat and said he was sorry that the party had failed to meet expectations. Despite the setback, Sarwar said the country faces serious political and economic challenges that require strong leadership. He warned that the rise of right-wing politics presents a major test for the United Kingdom. He said the Labour government must succeed in delivering stability, economic growth and better opportunities for people across the country. Following his resignation, Scottish Labour deputy leader Dame Jackie Baillie has taken over as acting leader. She thanked Sarwar for his leadership and praised his commitment to equality, fairness and public service. She said the party’s executive committee will soon announce the timetable for electing a new permanent leader. Sarwar’s departure from the Scottish Parliament will not trigger a by-election because he was elected through the regional list system. Under parliamentary rules, the next eligible Labour candidate on the Glasgow regional list is expected to replace him. His decision has sparked strong political debate. Opposition parties accused him of changing his position after previously supporting the abolition of the House of Lords. Critics also pointed to his earlier statements in which he said his main goal was to become Scotland’s first minister and remain focused on Scottish politics. Political leaders offered mixed reactions to the announcement. Some congratulated Sarwar on his new role and wished him success in government. Others argued that accepting a seat in the House of Lords contradicts his previous promises and could damage public confidence in politics.

Water level rises in the Chenab river, flooding se…

The Irrigation Department has reported a significant increase in the water flow of the Chenab River, raising concerns about flooding in nearby riverine areas. According to officials, the rising water level has already affected several low-lying settlements, forcing floodwater into residential and agricultural areas and creating difficulties for local communities. The department stated that the increase in the river’s discharge has caused water to spread into nearby villages located along the banks of the Chenab River. As a result, a protective embankment known as the Zamindara Bund in Jalalpur Pirwala Tehsil has been breached. The collapse of the embankment has allowed floodwater to move more rapidly into surrounding areas, increasing the risk to people, homes, livestock, and crops. According to the Irrigation Department, at least five villages have been submerged due to the rising floodwaters. Among the affected settlements are Basti Khuda Bakhsh, Basti Allah Rakha, and Basti Bakhsha, along with two other nearby villages. Residents in these areas are facing severe challenges as water continues to enter homes, farmland, and local roads. Many families are concerned about the safety of their property and the possibility of further flooding if water levels continue to rise. Officials have also reported that water levels have increased in the surroundings of Head Muhammad Wala Road and near Qasim Bela. These areas are being closely monitored as authorities assess the situation and evaluate the potential for additional flooding. The rise in water has affected transportation routes, making travel difficult for residents and increasing the need for precautionary measures. The Irrigation Department is keeping a close watch on the river’s flow and is expected to continue monitoring the situation in coordination with local administration and disaster management authorities. Residents living in vulnerable riverine areas have been advised to remain alert and follow official instructions. If water levels continue to increase, further evacuations and emergency measures may become necessary to ensure public safety. Flooding in the Chenab River region is a recurring challenge during the monsoon season, particularly when heavy rainfall upstream leads to a sudden increase in river discharge. Breaches in protective embankments can significantly worsen the situation by allowing water to spread rapidly into populated areas. Such incidents often result in damage to homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure, while also disrupting daily life and economic activities. Local authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage once water levels stabilize. Relief efforts may include providing temporary shelter, food, clean drinking water, and medical assistance to affected families. The government and emergency response agencies are likely to continue monitoring weather conditions and river flows to reduce further risks. The situation remains under observation, and officials have urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay informed through official updates and cooperate with emergency responders. Authorities are working to minimize the impact of the flooding and ensure the safety of communities living along the Chenab River.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day wins over fans

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has received an enthusiastic response from audiences, with many fans describing it as Tom Holland’s strongest performance yet as the iconic Marvel superhero. The latest installment follows Peter Parker as he struggles to rebuild his life after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the world forgot his identity. Instead of focusing on multiverse storylines, the new film takes a more personal approach, exploring Parker’s emotional journey while he continues protecting New York City. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film reunites Tom Holland with his wife and co-star Zendaya, who reprises her role as MJ. The movie also features the return of Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, marking the character’s first appearance in a Marvel Cinematic Universe feature film. Actress Sadie Sink also joins the franchise in a role that has been kept under wraps. Critics have largely praised the film for its emotional storytelling, stronger character development and balanced action sequences. Many reviewers believe the decision to shift away from complex multiverse plots has given the story greater depth and allowed the characters to take centre stage. Cinema audiences have echoed those views, with many calling the film Holland’s finest outing as Spider-Man. Fans praised his more mature portrayal of Peter Parker and highlighted the emotional chemistry between Holland and Zendaya as one of the movie’s biggest strengths. Long-time Spider-Man fans also appreciated the film’s closer connection to the original comic books, while others said the emotional moments between Peter Parker and his closest friends were more memorable than the action scenes. The movie has opened to packed cinemas and is expected to become one of Marvel’s biggest box-office successes this year. Industry analysts believe it could continue the strong commercial performance of Holland’s previous Spider-Man films, which have collectively earned billions of dollars worldwide. Speculation has also grown about the future of the franchise. Tom Holland has hinted that Marvel has long-term plans for Spider-Man and suggested the story could eventually introduce a new generation of heroes. Meanwhile, Zendaya has previously indicated that she plans to take a break from acting after completing her current film commitments later this year. With strong reviews, positive audience reactions and impressive early box-office momentum, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has strengthened its position as one of the year’s most successful superhero releases.

Rana slams Naqvi’s ‘confusing’ provinces rem…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, said it was true that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had instructed party leaders not to respond to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent statements. He added that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) strongly disagreed with both the content and tone of Naqvi’s remarks. Speaking on a television programme, Rana Sanaullah described Mohsin Naqvi’s comments as “meaningless” and lacking context. He said he had listened to Naqvi’s speech but could not understand what message he was trying to convey. “It appeared that he wanted to make a significant point but failed to explain it properly. Once he made the statement, his subsequent remarks contradicted one another. I simply could not understand what he was saying or why he was saying it,” Rana Sanaullah said. He stressed that whenever a person makes a public statement, it reflects their personal opinion, adding that it was up to Mohsin Naqvi to clarify the intent behind his remarks and take responsibility for their interpretation. Responding to Naqvi’s proposal regarding the creation of new administrative units or provinces, Rana Sanaullah said such matters could not be decided merely through public statements. “You cannot simply talk about new provinces and expect them to come into existence. The Constitution clearly defines the procedure for creating new provinces or administrative units,” he said. He maintained that the issue should first be debated in Parliament, while the final decision would rest with the leadership of the political parties. Rana Sanaullah recalled that during the PML-N government in Punjab from 2013 to 2018, the party had formally proposed the creation of new provinces. He said he had personally presented both the resolution and the proposal for establishing a commission to examine the matter. He explained that a national commission would have to be formed to review all aspects of creating new provinces, including financial resources, administrative arrangements and constitutional requirements. “The commission would also need to consult on representation in the National Assembly, provincial assemblies and the Senate. This is a highly complex issue that requires serious deliberation by experienced policymakers,” he said. Rana Sanaullah added that Pakistan could adopt smaller provinces, a stronger local government system, or even both, but such decisions should be made collectively by political parties after thorough consultation
