A new study warns that modern large scale chicken farming may be helping dangerous food poisoning bacteria spread more easily creating new risks for human health.

Researchers from the Oxford University found that the rapid growth of industrial poultry farming has created ideal conditions for Campylobacter, a bacteria that causes food poisoning to grow spread and develop new traits.

Campylobacter is one of the world’s leading causes of diarrhea and food poisoning.

In the UK it causes around three and a half times more stomach illness cases each year than all other monitored foodborne bacteria combined.

The researchers said the global chicken population has increased about sevenfold since the 1960s reaching around 31 billion birds.

This growth has made it easier for bacteria carried by wild birds to spread among farm chickens. The team studied nearly 2,800 bacterial genomes collected from chickens and wild birds in 30 countries including the UK and the US between 1979 and 2024.

Genetic analysis showed that the bacteria had developed changes linked to modern farming conditions.

These included genes that help it resist antibiotics and survive more easily in large poultry farms.

Researchers warned that rising antibiotic resistance is making Campylobacter infections harder to treat.

The study’s lead author Sam Sheppard said the findings provide new evidence that human activities and environmental changes can increase the spread of infectious diseases.

He added that understanding how bacteria evolve will be important for reducing future risks of animal to human diseases and antibiotic resistant infections.

Just a few hours later the 35 year old reportedly became ill at home and died suddenly. The exact cause of his death has not been officially confirmed. However his passing has added to growing concerns about the number of young bodybuilders who have died unexpectedly in recent years. Earlier this year 22 year old Brazilian bodybuilder Gabriel Ganley also died after suffering sudden cardiac arrest. In 2024, two other Brazilian bodybuilders in their 30s and 40s also died from heart related problems including one who collapsed during a competition. Similar cases have been reported around the world. American bodybuilder Dallas McCarver died in 2017 at the age of 26, while German fitness influencer Jo Lindner passed away in 2023 at the age of 30. These deaths have raised an important question. why are some people who appear extremely fit and healthy dying at a young age? A 2025 study published in the European Heart Journal examined nearly 20,000 amateur and professional bodybuilders who competed between 2005 and 2020. Researchers found that professional bodybuilders were more than five times more likely to die from sudden cardiac arrest than amateur competitors. The study recorded 121 deaths including 46 caused by sudden cardiac arrest. The average age at death was 45 years but for active competitors it was only 34.7 years. Researchers believe several factors may increase the risk, including the use of performance enhancing drugs rapid weight loss before competitions and extremely intense strength training. Another 2025 study from Denmark published in the journal Circulation followed 1,189 men who used anabolic steroids and compared them with nearly 60,000 men over 11 years. The researchers found that steroid users had a nine times higher risk of developing cardiomyopathy a disease that weakens the heart muscle. They also had about three times the risk of heart attack and heart failure. Experts say anabolic steroids may also raise blood pressure speed up the build up of plaque in the arteries and change the structure of the heart. Autopsy reports from several bodybuilders have shown that many had enlarged hearts and thicker heart walls especially in the left ventricle. These changes can increase the risk of dangerous heart rhythm problems and heart failure. One of the best known cases was Dallas McCarver, whose heart weighed 833 grams more than twice the normal weight of an adult male heart. A 2022 review also found that many American bodybuilders had hearts that were much larger and thicker than normal. In some cases even athletes in their 20s showed enlarged hearts thickened heart muscles, and serious coronary artery disease.

    Smartwatches have become popular health devices that can track heart rate sleep stress levels physical activity and recovery. While these features can help people understand their health better experts warn that relying too much on the numbers may lead to unnecessary anxiety. According to health experts the problem is not the smartwatch itself. The real issue begins when people trust the watch’s readings more than how they actually feel or the advice of a doctor. Nargiza Neumann Zander, founder of X Technology says health data is useful when it helps people make better choices. However it can become harmful if daily scores start controlling a person’s mood or decisions. One common sign of this is checking the smartwatch immediately after waking up instead of paying attention to how the body feels. Experts say people who naturally worry a lot try to be perfect or want to control everything are more likely to depend too much on smartwatch data.  A poor sleep score or low recovery rating may make someone think they are seriously ill even when there is no real medical problem. They also explain that smartwatch readings are based on algorithms and estimates not complete medical examinations. A low recovery score does not always mean a person is unhealthy because the human body gives many signals that wearable devices cannot fully measure. Constantly checking health data can also change people’s behavior. Normal changes such as temporary tiredness less sleep or a small increase in heart rate may be seen as signs of illness. As a result some people may skip exercise delay important tasks or believe they are not fit enough even though they are healthy. Heart specialists stress that smartwatches can increase health awareness but they should never replace professional medical advice. The devices can provide helpful information about heart rate sleep and activity but every reading should be understood in the context of a person’s overall health. Experts also note that movement poor sensor contact dehydration stress caffeine and environmental conditions can affect smartwatch readings. While a smartwatch may point to a possible issue only a qualified doctor can make a diagnosis after reviewing a patient’s medical history performing an examination and ordering any necessary tests. Health experts recommend focusing on long term improvements such as regular exercise better sleep and healthy daily habits instead of worrying about small day to day changes in smartwatch scores. People with conditions like high blood pressure diabetes or heart disease may benefit from monitoring certain health measures under a doctor’s guidance. They conclude that good health is not about getting the perfect smartwatch score every day. It is about maintaining long term physical and mental well being

    How canvas and color rescued Winston Churchill

    When history pictures Sir Winston Churchill, it summons the same iconic image of the stoic wartime leader. This typical leader with a bulldog scowl possesses cigar clamped between his teeth and a V-for-victory sign raised to a resilient nation. Yet behind the fierce political maneuvers lay a deeply sensitive man fighting severe emotional exhaustion. There’s a major landmark exhibition in London, titled Winston Churchill: The Painter. It has kept Britain’s titan grounded: his lifelong, intense passion for oil painting. The 1915 Catalyst Churchill did not pick up a paintbrush as a youth or a rested pensioner. He was forty years old and engulfed in the darkest catastrophe of his career. Following the disastrous Gallipoli campaign in 1915 during the First World War, Churchill was stripped of his post at the Admiralty. He got abruptly casted into political exile. So, he felt his mind consumed by overwhelming anxiety and listlessness. He had described himself as a deep-sea creature suddenly hauled to the surface. He suffered from a terrifying drop in pressure. In desperation, he picked up a set of children’s paints belonging to his young family members. What began as a tentative experiment to stave off despair quickly blossomed into an obsession. As Churchill would later recall, The Muse of Painting came to my rescue. The canvas provided something his turbulent political career rarely allowed: a realm where he held absolute command over every stroke, texture, and hue. From Cautious Strokes to Bold Expressionism The exhibition traces Churchill’s artistic maturation across five decades and more than fifty rare works, many loaned from private collections where they have remained hidden from public view for generations. Initially guided by artistic mentors such as Sir John Lavery and Sir William Nicholson, Churchill’s early works were cautious and subdued, capturing war-torn landscapes on the Western Front during his subsequent military service in France. However, as his confidence grew, so too did his appetite for vibrant color and energetic compositions. Influenced by French Post-Impressionism, Churchill developed an eye for brilliant light and rich pigment. He famously declared his disdain for muted palettes, writing that he felt genuine pity for poor, timid browns in favor of unapologetic cobalt blues, emerald greens, and fiery terracottas. Whether rendering the lush water garden at Chartwell or capturing the sun-drenched architectural marvels of Marrakech, Churchill painted with the same he brought to the House of Commons. Morocco, in particular, held a magical appeal for him. He returned there six times, captivated by the dramatic contrast between the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and the luminous desert plains. Art as Solace and Soft Diplomacy For Churchill, painting was never a mere hobby to kill time; it was a psychological anchor and a companion through severe personal tragedies. When his three-year-old daughter Marigold tragically died of sepsis in 1921, or when political fortunes ebbed during his wilderness years in the 1930s, Churchill retreated to his studio at Chartwell. Surrounded by paint tubes housed in old cigar humidors, he labored for hours at his easel, finding peace in the disciplined focus required to translate nature onto canvas. Beyond personal healing, his artwork doubled as subtle political allegory and warm diplomacy. Paintings like The Beach at Walmer (1938) depicted a historical cannon watching over innocent swimmers. This artwork hinted at his growing anxiety over looming European conflict long before others acknowledged the threat. Later in life, he frequently gifted canvases to world leaders, bodyguards, and trusted confidants, using his art as a bridge of personal warmth.  A Portrait of the Man Ultimately, exploring Churchill’s canvases fundamentally reframes our understanding of one of history’s most formidable figures. The bold brushstrokes reveal an individual far more vulnerable, contemplative, and joyful than the uncompromising statesman of public memory. By stepping behind his easel, we discover that the stubborn courage that helped save the free world was nurtured, in no small part, by the quiet sanctuary of color and light.  

  • Why do car turn signals click?

    When you turn your car left or right you hear the familiar click-click sound from the turn signal. At the same time the arrow on the dashboard flashes to show the signal is working. Even though cars have become much more advanced this sound has stayed the same for many years. But have you ever wondered why? Turn signals first appeared in cars in the late 1930s. In older vehicles the clicking sound came from a thermal flasher. When the driver switched on the turn signal electricity heated a small metal strip.  As it bent from the heat it completed an electrical circuit and turned the signal lights on. The metal quickly cooled returned to its original shape and broke the circuit turning the lights off. This heating and cooling cycle repeated over and over making the lights flash. The movement of the metal strip created the well known clicking sound. As technology improved car makers replaced the old thermal system with electromagnetic and later electronic systems controlled by computer chips.  These newer systems no longer need moving metal parts to flash the lights. However most modern cars still play the click click sound on purpose. Manufacturers keep it because drivers are used to hearing it and the sound reassures them that the turn signal is working correctly even though it is no longer mechanically necessary.

  • Why walking slows with age

    Getting older is a natural part of life and it cannot be stopped. But have you ever noticed that people often walk more slowly and feel tired more quickly as they age? A new study may explain why this happens. Researchers from Flinders University and the University of Canberra in Australia studied how walking changes with age.  They found that as people get older the body starts to focus more on safety and balance than on walking speed. The study included 107 healthy people between 26 and 86 years old. Researchers examined how their bodies moved while walking. They found that movement around the ankles and other muscles changes with age. The ankle muscles play an important role in keeping the body balanced and helping people move forward. As people age the body appears to use more muscle effort to stay stable and upright. Older adults may move the muscles around their ankles in a way that makes the ankle joints stiffer.  This can improve balance and reduce the risk of losing stability. However there is a downside. Using the muscles this way requires more effort which can make older people feel tired sooner and walk more  slowly. Researchers believe that the nervous system also becomes more focused on preventing falls and maintaining stability with age. The good news is that regular physical activity can help maintain movement and muscle strength. Exercises that improve balance and strengthen the muscles may help older adults stay active and move more confidently.

  • The hallucination trap – information convincing but factually incorrect

    By Syeda Samar Zahra Zaidi When you ask an AI chatbot a question it does not know the answer to, an odd thing can happen: instead of hesitating or saying, “I am not sure!” it confidently delivers a tidy, well-structured, completely fabricated response—often with fake citations, fictional figures, and an authoritative tone. This phenomenon is known as the ‘hallucination trap ’, and it may be the most significant barrier between trust and artificial intelligence. I was introduced to the term “AI hallucination” for the first time in the workshop under the project titled “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era” at Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab, supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). I learned that a “hallucination” occurs when a language model produces information that sounds convincing but is factually incorrect or completely made up. Examples include inventing a legal case that never existed, citing a research paper that doesn’t exist or boldly misrepresenting a historical date. What is disturbing is not merely that AI can be wrong-humans make mistake too- but rather the way it presents that incorrect information with clearly, confidence and without a trace of doubt. Large language models are essentially highly complex pattern predictors trained to produce the most likely next word in a sequence. As a result, when a model has encountered a topic thousands of times in its training data, the predictors are typically accurate. However, when it comes across a gap, an unidentified fact or a question at the outer edge of its knowledge, it doesn’t shift into a hesitant mode. Instead, it continues doing exactly what it was trained to do: generate a logical, fluent piece of writing, producing a response that is structurally sound and grammatically correct but based on nothing. In human communication, confidence is generally perceived as a sign of strength which is important. We naturally prefer to trust a calm, reliable voice over a hesitant one. AI systems unintentionally exploit the tendency because their language remains confident whether they are right or wrong. The risks increase with the use of AI, as students may unintentionally include false information into their work and journalists have published articles citing artificially created sources and quotes, negatively affecting the credibility of their publications. Such inaccuracies influence what millions of people see, believe or share, thereby amplifying fabricated content. The reason AI does not simply say “I don’t know” is partly due to the way these systems are trained. Many models are designed to provide helpful, comprehensive-sounding answers and are rarely rewarded for expressing doubt during training. This means that a model that frequently acknowledges uncertainty may be judged as less helpful than one that consistently provides an answer, even when that confidence is occasionally misplaced. Such incorrectly aligned incentives arise when the training process gradually teaches the model that sounding confident is more valuable than being accuracy. Retrieval-augmented generation, which relies on responses in actual, verifiable records rather than internal memory alone, improved training techniques that explicitly account for uncertainty; and systems built to simply cite sources. So, users can independently verify claims are just a few of the ways developers are using to addresses this problem. While none of these solutions fully eliminate hallucination yet, taken together they represent a major shift from blind confidence toward earned trust. The most dangerous outcome is not an AI that makes mistakes but a culture of users who stop questioning because the system always sounds so sure of itself.   Therefore, until AI becomes more reliably aware of it own limitation, part of the responsibility falls on the people who use it: treating AI-generated output as a starting point rather than an endpoint, cross checking important facts against credible sources. In the end, the hallucination trap serves as a reminder that illusion is not the same as truth. As AI becomes increasingly common in education, digital media and everyday life, understanding why it occasionally lies with confidence is not only a technical curiosity but also a fundamental aspect of digital literacy. We must strengthen our ability to verify the information provided by AI as they become more persuasive.
