TAK, Thailand — Police in Tak province have intercepted a van and rescued nine foreign nationals who were being trafficked toward the Thai-Myanmar border, following a dramatic tip-off from a former cyber scam compound victim currently residing in Dubai. The successful intervention has led to the arrest of the driver and the detention of the migrants, shedding light on the ongoing human trafficking pipelines that supply labor to illicit call centers across the border.

The rescue operation was initiated after authorities received urgent intelligence from a former victim of a notorious call-center scam syndicate. The individual, who had escaped the operations and was now in Dubai, alerted police after receiving desperate messages from the trapped foreigners. The migrants were pleading for help, reporting that they were being held against their will inside a van that was actively en route to the border. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, law enforcement officers set up an interception and successfully stopped the vehicle before it could cross into Myanmar.

Upon searching the van, police identified the driver as 31-year-old Than Zaw Tun, a Myanmar national. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered the nine trapped migrants, comprising four Nigerians, two Indians, one Cameroonian, one Ugandan, and one Vietnamese national. An initial inspection of the group revealed that their immigration statuses varied; some individuals possessed no travel documents whatsoever, while others had entered Thailand illegally by traversing natural, unregulated border crossings.

During questioning, the driver confessed to transporting the group under the direct instructions of a human trafficking recruiter known only as “Ko Yae.” The driver admitted that he communicated with the recruiter via the encrypted messaging application Telegram and was paid a fee of 2,000 baht per person to deliver the migrants to Tak province. From there, the victims were scheduled to be smuggled across the border into Myanmar, where they would likely be forced to work in the region’s rampant cyber scam compounds.

Following the interception, legal proceedings were swiftly initiated against all parties involved. The nine foreign nationals were formally charged with illegal entry and unlawful residence in the Kingdom. Than Zaw Tun was charged with the severe offenses of assisting, concealing, and transporting illegal migrants.

The incident underscores the persistent and evolving tactics used by transnational crime syndicates to lure and traffic vulnerable foreign nationals into forced labor operations in Southeast Asia. Law enforcement agencies are now leveraging the information gathered from the driver and the digital communications to track down the recruiter “Ko Yae” and dismantle the broader smuggling network responsible for the trafficking operation.

The sources also said that substances associated with a sedative were found in a blood sample taken from Mir Raza. The chemical examination was conducted to determine whether the shirt contained any material that could help investigators understand the circumstances surrounding the incident. The findings are expected to be considered along with other forensic evidence collected during the investigation. Investigators also reported the presence of gunshot residue (GSR) on the waist area of Mir Raza’s shirt. Sources said the concentration of GSR was higher around the waist section. They said this finding could provide investigators with important information about the direction and circumstances of the shooting. However, the forensic findings are expected to be assessed alongside other evidence before investigators reach any final conclusion. Police are also examining other aspects of the case to establish what happened. Meanwhile, further shortcomings in the investigation have reportedly emerged. Investigative officials said several important steps had not been completed despite days having passed since the incident. According to officials, geofencing of the crime scene has not yet been carried out. Geofencing could help investigators identify mobile devices that were present in or around the area at the relevant time. Officials also said that Mir Raza’s mobile phone data had not been obtained. The phone record could potentially help investigators establish his movements and identify contacts or activities around the time of the incident. Another issue raised by investigators concerns Mir Raza’s smartwatch. Officials said its forensic examination had also not been conducted. Such devices can sometimes contain information about movement, activity and other data that may assist an investigation. The latest findings have added new elements to the case. Investigators are now expected to examine the forensic report along with other available evidence. The police are also facing questions over why some investigative procedures were not carried out earlier. The family has previously called for a thorough investigation and answers about what happened to Mir Raza.

    Turkey’s governing coalition put forward a draft law before parliament on Wednesday designed to secure lasting peace with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, offering legal protection from prosecution to many former fighters and suspending prison terms for others. The legislation represents a significant step toward closing out an insurgency that has claimed more than 40,000 lives since 1984, deepened political divisions inside Turkey and spilled violence into neighboring Iraq and Syria over four decades. The bill aims to bring the long running conflict to a close in part by clearing the way for potentially thousands of former PKK fighters and civilians to return to Turkey from hideouts in northern Iraq. The measure carries support from a majority of lawmakers and is expected to clear parliament later this week, though public opinion polls suggest many Turks remain doubtful it will deliver a durable peace. Under the bill, Turkey’s national security council would confirm the group’s disarmament, while a dedicated committee, including the vice president, several cabinet ministers and the head of the MIT intelligence service, would supervise the surrender and disarmament of militants. That committee would then report on the process to a parliamentary oversight commission. According to the text of the legislation, the bill would suspend prison sentences for individuals convicted of PKK membership or of assisting the organization. It would also extend legal protection to fighters who were not involved in killings, provided they return to Turkey within six months of the law taking effect. PKK figures convicted of more serious offenses, including leading a terrorist organization or sentenced to aggravated life terms before 2005, would fall outside the scope of these protections and would not receive suspended sentences. That exclusion means PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999 under an aggravated life sentence, would remain behind bars even as the broader peace process moves forward. Ocalan called on the PKK to lay down its weapons and dissolve last year, a call the group’s leadership accepted. President Tayyip Erdogan’s governing AK Party secured backing for the bill, formally titled the national solidarity and social integration law, from its nationalist ally the MHP as well as the pro Kurdish DEM Party. Most other parties in parliament, including the main opposition, have also expressed support for the legislation. DEM co chair Tuncer Bakirhan described the vote as an important first step, saying he hopes the process continues forward in a constructive direction. The peace initiative between Turkey, which fields NATO’s second largest army, and the PKK first got underway in late 2024. It nearly stalled earlier this year, however, as the war involving Iran raised fears of wider regional instability and diverted attention from the domestic peace effort. Turkey, along with the United States and the European Union, classifies the PKK as a terrorist organization. The group launched its armed campaign in 1984, initially demanding an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey before later shifting its goals toward greater autonomy and expanded political rights for Kurdish communities within Turkey. The legislation now heads toward a parliamentary vote expected within days, marking one of the most consequential efforts yet to formally end a conflict that has shaped Turkish domestic politics and regional security dynamics for more than a generation.

    Adviser to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Political Affairs, Senator Rana Sanaullah, has said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari knows very well that the elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) were conducted in a free and fair manner. Rana Sanaullah expressed confidence that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would perform strongly in the next phase of the AJK elections. He predicted that his party could win seven out of the 10 seats being contested in the upcoming stage. The PML-N leader also criticised the PPP’s election campaign, claiming that the party had entered the second phase of the electoral process while continuing what he described as a propaganda campaign. He expressed hope that after the completion of the third phase, the PPP would accept the election results. Rana Sanaullah attributed the PML-N’s electoral support in AJK to the development work carried out by the party’s government in Punjab. He said voters in AJK had taken note of Punjab’s progress and consequently supported the PML-N. He further stated that the PML-N does not intend to form a coalition government in AJK and instead aims to establish its own government. His remarks indicate that the party expects to secure enough seats to govern independently after the completion of all phases of the elections. Addressing the issue of creating new provinces, Rana Sanaullah rejected reports that the PML-N had reached a clear or formal position on the matter. He said no party meeting had taken place where members adopted a definitive stance on the creation of new provinces, adding that the issue does not currently form part of the party’s agenda. The senator also defended Pakistan’s parliamentary democratic system and the Constitution of 1973, arguing that neither suffers from any fundamental structural flaw. According to him, the same constitutional framework has kept the country united for nearly five decades despite political crises, military coups and periods of authoritarian rule. Rana Sanaullah maintained that the real problem lies not in the system itself but in the failure of political actors and institutions to follow the Constitution sincerely and consistently. He argued that if the country adheres to the constitutional framework and respects democratic principles, the existing system can effectively deliver results. He further said that repeatedly violating constitutional principles and keeping the democratic system under unnecessary pressure prevents it from functioning properly. Rana Sanaullah expressed confidence that the parliamentary system and the 1973 Constitution have demonstrated their resilience over the past half-century and can continue to serve the country successfully in the future if all stakeholders implement them in letter and spirit.
