One dead, 37 fall ill after eating vermicelli in R…

RAJANPUR: One child has reportedly died and four other people remain in critical condition after allegedly falling ill from eating vermicelli in the Umerkot area of Rajanpur district.

According to Rescue 1122 sources, as many as 37 members of the same family developed serious health complications after consuming the food. The affected individuals reportedly included women and children.

Rescue teams shifted 30 patients to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment, while another seven were taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Rojhan. Four of the affected people are said to be in critical condition, while doctors continue to monitor the health of the other patients.

 

Police officials said the family members told investigators that their health began to deteriorate after they ate the vermicelli. However, authorities have not yet confirmed whether the food caused the illness or whether another factor may have contributed to the incident.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the mass illness. Officials are also expected to examine the food consumed by the family and gather further information as part of the inquiry.

The Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training, chaired by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt, reviewed the progress of degree attestation cases involving the University of South Asia (USA) Lahore, Newport Institute of Communication and Economics (NICE) Karachi and PIMSET campuses in Karachi and Lahore. The committee was informed that around 36,931 students from these institutions were affected due to issues related to degree recognition and attestation. According to details presented before the committee, 6,556 students belonged to the University of South Asia Lahore, 5,445 students belonged to NICE Karachi, while 24,930 students were linked with PIMSET campuses in Karachi and Lahore. During the meeting, the committee asked HEC officials to provide clear updates on the progress made and how many students had actually received degree attestation. The Chairperson questioned the “breakthrough” progress earlier mentioned by HEC officials and sought factual details instead of general statements. Regarding the University of South Asia Lahore, HEC informed the committee that an external expert committee was formed to review the campus situation. Officials said they divided the students into different categories after evaluation. HEC informed the committee that Category A and Category B students had been cleared, covering 4,383 students out of the total 6,556 affected students at the university. Officials explained that the overall record had been approved, but individual students still needed to apply for degree attestation. HEC estimated that the individual attestation process could take around two to three weeks after applications were submitted. However, questions arose regarding HEC’s online attestation system. Senator Masroor Ahsan questioned HEC officials about claims that the attestation process had already become fully online. He asked how many students from the affected institutions had actually received online processing during the previous month. During the discussion, HEC officials initially could not provide specific figures related to these particular institutions. The senator pointed out that officials had earlier stated that the online system was operational, but later said students would start applying in the coming week. He demanded written data showing the exact number of degrees processed through the online system for students from USA Lahore, NICE and PIMSET. HEC officials later informed the committee that around 15,000 degrees in total had been processed through the online system, but lawmakers insisted that separate figures for the affected institutions were necessary. The meeting also included complaints from students who attended the session. A student from NICE informed the committee that although his case was supposed to be resolved, his complaint on the Pakistan Citizen Portal had remained marked as “In Progress” since June 17. The student said he had not received his verification letter or No Objection Certificate. HEC officials advised him to apply through the on spot online attestation process. The Chairperson directed the student to visit the HEC office after the meeting, accompanied by the concerned official so that the matter could be resolved quickly. Another student complained that despite having completed multiple attestations, the HEC portal was not showing the online ticket or verification status. The Chairperson acknowledged that the new online system was facing initial technical problems but directed HEC officials to immediately assist affected students and resolve portal related issues. The committee directed HEC to stop providing unclear figures and submit complete factual data regarding the number of degrees successfully attested through the online system for USA Lahore, NICE and PIMSET. The Chairperson also directed authorities to provide a detailed progress report on NICE and PIMSET within 15 days, similar to the report prepared for the University of South Asia Lahore. During further discussion, concerns were also raised regarding the infrastructure of some private campuses. The Chairperson noted that some campuses were operating in residential areas or lacked proper facilities such as laboratories and playgrounds despite charging high fees. The committee directed that registration criteria for such institutions should be reviewed to ensure students receive quality education and proper facilities. The committee stressed that students should not suffer due to administrative issues and directed relevant authorities to ensure timely resolution of all pending degree verification cases.

    Pakistani pensioners can now obtain their Proof of Life certificate free of charge without having to visit a bank or pension office, thanks to a new digital and nationwide service introduced by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). The facility is available through the Pak ID mobile app, NADRA Registration Centres, Union Councils, e-Sahulat franchises and NADRA’s mobile services across Pakistan. The initiative has been introduced on the special directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control Ministry of Defence Controller General of Accounts (CGA) and Military Accountant General (MAG). The service is particularly aimed at helping elderly bedridden and differently abled pensioners who may find it difficult to travel repeatedly to banks or pension offices to fulfil the Proof of Life requirement. How to Get Proof of Life from Home The easiest option for eligible pensioners is the Pak ID mobile app. Pensioners can complete the required identity verification process through the app and obtain their Proof of Life certificate from home. Pensioners who cannot use the Pak ID app themselves can also receive assistance from a family member. A family member may use their own Pak ID account to complete the prescribed identity verification process for the pensioner. For those who require in-person assistance, the service is available free of charge at more than 5,000 e-Sahulat franchises across the country. Pensioners can also visit more than 988 NADRA Registration Centres and around 500 Union Councils, where priority services are being provided without requiring them to wait in the regular queue. Pensioners who cannot easily travel to a service point can use NADRA’s mobile registration vans, biker services and main pack services. National Pensioners Register The Proof of Life facility is part of a wider reform initiative under which NADRA has established a National Pensioners Register. In its first phase pensioners administered by CGA and MAG have been included in the database. The digital register provides pension authorities with a reliable source for verifying a pensioner’s identity and life status. It can also reduce the need for families to repeatedly report the same information to different government departments. If a pensioner’s death is reported through NADRA’s death notification system or recorded in the Civil Registration Management System, the relevant pension controller can receive a digital notification. NADRA has also introduced a verification service for authorized banks, allowing them to directly check a pensioner’s Proof of Life status through the National Pensioners Register. The new system is expected to make pension verification easier while reducing paperwork, repeated physical visits and inconvenience for elderly pensioners.

Speaking to the media, DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla said that around two years ago, Rose Marie established contact with Amir Matam, a welder from Lodhran, through social media. Their friendship gradually developed into a love relationship, after which Amir Matam persuaded her to travel to Pakistan for marriage. The Filipino woman came to Lodhran, married Amir Matam, and began living with him. He said that serious disputes had developed between the couple in recent months, leaving the foreign woman feeling unsafe. According to the DSP, Rose Marie informed a Malaysian friend living in Islamabad about her situation. The Malaysian woman then contacted Police Helpline 15 seeking immediate assistance for her friend. DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla said that due to the high-profile nature of the call, DPO Lodhran Captain (Retd.) Ali Bin Tariq was immediately informed, who promptly constituted a police team under his supervision to respond to the situation. He added that the police not only rescued their foreign sister but also recovered her belongings and Rs. 1.5 million in cash, which had allegedly been misappropriated by her husband, Amir Matam. The recovered cash and belongings were returned to the woman, while she was provided with secure accommodation and police protection. DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla emphasized that the protection of the lives, property, and dignity of foreigners whether residents or tourists is among the highest priorities of the State of Pakistan and the police. Concluding his statement, the DSP Abid Hussain Bhulla said that the police response in high-profile cases is equally prompt and professional. He added that Lodhran Police resolved all matters concerning the foreign woman in accordance with her wishes. She is now expected to return to her home country, the Philippines, while the accused, who is currently on bail, will face legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
