    Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s reigning Olympic champion, has punched his ticket to the men’s javelin throw final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. He came through a tricky qualification round in Glasgow on Thursday to get there. Strong winds made life hard for every thrower in the field. None of them managed to reach the automatic qualifying distance of 84 metres, which made the round unusually unpredictable. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage led all qualifiers with a throw of 82.84 metres. Anderson Peters of Grenada, the current world champion, was next best at 81.29 metres. Only two other athletes crossed the 80-metre line, South Africa’s Douw Smit, who reached 80.64 metres, and England’s Benjamin East, who managed 80.38 metres. India’s Neeraj Chopra, who has long been Arshad’s fiercest competitor, also booked his spot in the final. He started with a throw of 76.28 metres, then pushed further to 79.61 metres on his second attempt to confirm qualification. India actually secured three finalists in total. Rohit Yadav joined Chopra after throwing a best of 78.37 metres, while Yashveer Singh kept improving across his attempts and eventually settled for 78.36 metres. It was not such good news for Pakistan’s other entrant, Muhammad Yasir Sultan. He fouled his first throw, then followed up with attempts of 71.42 and 74.36 metres. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to carry him into the final. Friday’s javelin final is scheduled for 7:45 PM Pakistan Standard Time. Pakistan has a long history at the Commonwealth Games, having first competed back in 1954. Since then, the country has amassed 82 medals overall, including 27 gold, 27 silver, and 28 bronze. Its most successful campaign in recent memory came at the 2022 Birmingham Games. A 68-member Pakistani contingent took part across 12 sports and ultimately finished 18th in the medal table with eight medals. That edition also marked one of Arshad’s finest moments. He won javelin gold with a Games record throw of 90.18 metres, delivering Pakistan’s first athletics gold at the Commonwealth Games since 1962.

    Lawyer and social activist Jibran Nasir has criticised the country’s political and economic situation, alleging that pressure, censorship and coercive measures have failed to change public opinion about PTI founder Imran Khan. Speaking to anchorperson Ameer Abbas, Nasir said authorities had been unable to alter public sentiment toward Imran Khan despite what he described as years of pressure and attempts to control political discourse. He argued that if public opinion had genuinely changed, millions of people would not have voted for Imran Khan and his political movement in the February 8 general elections. Nasir questioned how the authorities could claim to change broader public thinking about the economy, Constitution and rule of law when they had not been able to change people’s views about a single political leader. He also criticised what he described as restrictions on political expression and media freedom. Nasir alleged that force, state pressure, censorship and arrests were being used to control political developments. According to Nasir, suppressing criticism does not resolve underlying public grievances. He said people who speak about alleged injustices are sometimes portrayed as creating unrest rather than being allowed to raise their concerns. He warned that continued reliance on pressure could increase frustration among citizens instead of resolving political differences. Nasir further claimed that people were now more aware of political developments and could not easily be persuaded through fear or restrictions. He said arrests, cases and harsh measures had not succeeded in changing the position of a significant section of the public. The lawyer maintained that political issues could not be permanently controlled through force. He called for greater space for political expression and a process through which public grievances could be addressed. His comments come amid continued political tensions between the government and PTI. The party has repeatedly raised concerns over the treatment of its leadership, legal cases against its members and restrictions on political activities.

    Punjab opposition challenges Green Property Certificate system

    Lahore: Opposition member of the Punjab Assembly Aftab Ahmad Khan has criticised the provincial government’s Green Property Certificate system, claiming that poor implementation has disrupted property transactions and created difficulties for citizens across Punjab. The opposition lawmaker has submitted an adjournment motion in the provincial assembly, highlighting what he described as serious administrative and technical shortcomings in the newly introduced system. According to the motion, the system was implemented across Punjab simultaneously without adequate preparation, complete computerised land records or sufficient training for the staff responsible for processing property transactions. Aftab Ahmad Khan said the system had become particularly difficult for ordinary citizens and overseas Pakistanis seeking to buy or sell property in the province. He claimed that property transactions in several areas had effectively slowed down or come to a halt because of problems associated with the new procedure. According to the motion, people who need to sell properties urgently are facing financial difficulties because transactions cannot be completed promptly. The opposition member also pointed to discrepancies in computerised land records and inadequate staff training. He alleged that errors in records and excessive discretionary powers available to officials could create opportunities for corruption and contribute to disputes over land ownership. Another concern raised in the motion is the certificate’s validity period. The opposition member said the 90-day validity period adds to the difficulties faced by property owners and buyers, particularly when transactions are delayed because of administrative problems. The motion further criticised what was described as a complicated “seven-window operation”. Instead of simplifying property transactions through a one-window mechanism, the current process has allegedly increased the number of offices and stages applicants must navigate. Aftab Ahmad Khan said the situation was particularly problematic for properties owned by multiple people, as co-owners may face additional difficulties in completing transactions within the required time. The opposition has called for immediate correction and updating of land records and better preparation of officials handling the system. It has also demanded the establishment of a user-friendly online portal specifically for overseas Pakistanis so they can complete property-related procedures without repeatedly visiting government offices. An effective grievance redressal mechanism has also been proposed to enable citizens to report problems and obtain timely solutions. The motion states that widespread concern and frustration are emerging among citizens over the implementation of the system.

    Suicide blast outside Swat police station injures …

According to senior police officials, the attacker tried to force his way into the police station but was intercepted by an alert police officer at the main entrance. Unable to gain access, the suspect blew himself up near the station’s gate, triggering a powerful explosion. Authorities said the police station is located close to the police lines and several other sensitive government installations, raising concerns that the attacker may have intended to target security facilities. Officials credited the swift response of police personnel with preventing the bomber from reaching the compound, which likely averted greater casualties and damage. Initial reports indicated that at least four police officers sustained serious injuries in the blast, while two civilians were also hurt. However, rescue officials later confirmed that more than 15 injured people had been transported to different hospitals for medical treatment, suggesting the number of casualties could rise as rescue efforts continued. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene immediately after the explosion, providing first aid to the injured and shifting them to nearby healthcare facilities. Security forces cordoned off the area, launched a search operation, and began collecting evidence to determine the nature of the attack and identify those behind it. Police officials also clarified that a protest by local youths was taking place in the wider area at the time of the incident, but the demonstration was located some distance from the blast site and was not directly affected.

    AJK reserved seats election: Polling set for Augus…

    The AJK reserved seats election will be held on August 24, with the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission announcing the schedule for polling in the Legislative Assembly. According to the notification, voting will take place at the AJK Assembly from 10am to 1pm. The reserved seats include five for women, one for Ulema-e-Deen or Mashaikh, one for Jammu and Kashmir state subjects living abroad, and one for technocrats and other professionals. Candidates will be able to submit their nomination papers on August 20 between 9am and 2pm. The returning officer will subsequently scrutinise the papers and publish the list of valid candidates. Appeals against decisions on nomination papers can be filed on August 21. The Chief Election Commissioner will hear the appeals on August 22, while candidates can withdraw their nominations before 2pm on August 23. The AJK Assembly has 53 members, including 45 directly elected members and eight members elected through reserved seats. However, polling on seven directly elected seats could not take place because of law and order concerns. As a result, the reserved-seat election will initially be conducted by the 38 directly elected members elected so far. The development comes as AJK’s three-phase electoral process continues amid political and security challenges.

    QUETTA: A security official was martyred and six others were injured when an explosive device targeted a security convoy in Khad Kocha, Mastung district, on Saturday, police said. According to officials, the bomb had been planted near Gro in the Khad Kocha area along the Quetta-Karachi National Highway. It was detonated as security vehicles passed through the area, striking one of the vehicles. A senior police officer confirmed the death and injuries, saying the remaining vehicles in the convoy were not affected by the explosion. Following the blast, an exchange of fire continued in the area for some time. Police officials said the attackers fled after additional security personnel arrived at the scene. The deceased official and injured personnel were taken to Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani Memorial Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities subsequently closed the highway, disrupting traffic at several points, while security forces launched a search operation to locate those responsible. The incident came a day after another explosion in the same area killed four labourers working in an apple orchard and injured three others. Medical officials said the victims had suffered visible splinter injuries.
