Online Scams Surge in Thailand With Over 177 Million Baht Lost in One Week, Product Fraud Tops List as Police Warn Against Impersonators
BANGKOK – Online fraud continues to pose a major threat in Thailand, with the Anti-Cyber Scam Center (ACSC) reporting more than 5,700 cases and damages exceeding 177 million baht in just one week.
According to ACSC statistics for July 19–25, 2026, authorities received 5,716 complaints through the ThaipoliceOnline system. The total financial losses amounted to over 177 million baht. Scams involving the fraudulent sale of goods and services remained the most common type, accounting for 4,429 cases, or 77.5% of the total, and causing more than 48 million baht in damages.
This pattern aligns with broader trends reported by Thai media and the ACSC throughout 2026. Weekly figures have frequently shown product and service scams dominating case volumes (often 70–80% or higher), while other categories such as investment fraud or impersonation generate higher average losses per case. Earlier periods in the year recorded thousands of weekly complaints and damages ranging from roughly 100 million to over 200 million baht, even as overall numbers have declined from early-2026 peaks following intensified enforcement.
A particularly concerning tactic pointed out by police involves call-center gangs impersonating police officers or other government officials. Scammers typically contact victims by phone, claim involvement in a criminal case, demand video calls, instruct them to isolate themselves in hotels, and pressure them to transfer money under the pretext of “proving innocence” or account verification. In recent incidents, officers have successfully intervened in time to prevent further losses.
Thai authorities have repeatedly stressed that real officials will never:
– Call to notify someone they are involved in a case
– Ask people to add a LINE account to receive arrest warrants or official documents
– Conduct interrogations via video call
– Demand money transfers to “check accounts” or demonstrate innocence
Members of the public who receive such calls are advised to hang up immediately, avoid further conversation or adding contacts on messaging apps, refrain from transferring any funds, inform family members or trusted contacts, and report the incident to the 24-hour hotline 1441.
The ACSC, operating under the Royal Thai Police, continues to coordinate with banks, other agencies, and international partners to freeze funds, dismantle networks (including mule accounts and cross-border operations), and raise public awareness.
