Only 7% government school students enter top colleges

Karachi – The standard of education in Karachi’s government schools has declined to a worrying level with only 7 percent of students admitted to top government colleges this year coming from government schools.

Questions are being raised over the quality of education in Karachi’s government schools. Sources in the Education Department have revealed that the admission rate of government school students in top government colleges is extremely low. As many as 93 percent of admissions in Karachi’s government colleges were secured by students from private schools.

According to Education Department sources, a total of 13,211 students were admitted to Karachi’s top 10 government colleges. However, only 947 students among them came from government schools.

According to the sources, at Adamjee Government Science College, only 28 government school students were admitted out of a total of 613 admissions. At DJ Sindh Government Science College, only 44 government school students secured admission out of 1,258 admissions.

Similarly, Delhi Government Science College admitted 801 students of whom only 28 were from government schools. At Government Boys College Nazimabad, only 60 government school students were admitted out of a total of 1,317 admissions.

Field officers must personally oversee field operations to eradicate crime,” he said, directing officials to accelerate action against proclaimed offenders and habitual criminals using all available resources. Underscoring procedural compliance, the CCPO stated that the timely registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) is a fundamental right of every citizen and must be ensured without exception. He warned that negligence or delay in addressing public grievances would not be tolerated, directing supervisory officers to rigorously monitor cases to raise investigation standards.     LONDON:  Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm and national spirit at the Pakistan High Commission in London, with Chairman Kashmir Committee Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon attending as the chief guest. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Tipu Usman, hoisted the national flag to the national anthem at a ceremony attended by a large number of members of the Pakistani community, media representatives, diplomats and High Commission officials with their families. The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of special messages from the President, Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Pakistan. Addressing the gathering, High Commissioner Tipu Usman paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the founders of Pakistan, as well as the sacrifices made by millions of men and women during the struggle for independence. He said Pakistanis living in Britain were the country’s “true ambassadors”, playing an important role in strengthening relations between Pakistan and the UK and building bridges between the two countries. The High Commissioner also reaffirmed Pakistan’s moral, political and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, saying they were entitled to this right under the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. The celebrations featured national songs, while British-Pakistani soprano singer Saira Peter delivered a special performance. The enthusiastic participation of children added to the festive atmosphere. The ceremony concluded with High Commissioner Tipu Usman, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon and other distinguished guests cutting a cake to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.

    President approves new high court judges

      President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of additional judges to several high courts across the country, along with the confirmation of certain judges already serving in an additional capacity. According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the president approved the appointment of additional judges to the Lahore High Court, Sindh High Court and Peshawar High Court. He also gave the go-ahead for appointments to the Islamabad High Court and Balochistan High Court. The latest decisions are part of the process of strengthening the judicial system and filling vacant or additional judicial positions in various high courts. In a separate decision, President Zardari approved measures to bring the salaries, allowances and pension benefits of Supreme Court judges on par with those of judges of the Federal Constitutional Court. The president also approved amendments to the 1997 order governing leave, pension and other benefits available to high court judges. The amendments seek to update the existing framework governing judicial privileges and post-service benefits. The Presidency further announced that President Zardari approved the appointment of Haroon Akhtar as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Industries and Production. The appointment adds another senior figure to the federal government’s economic and industrial policy team, with the industries and production sector remaining a key area for investment, manufacturing growth and economic development.

    KARACHI: Frustration over soaring inflation and repeated fuel price hikes spilled onto the streets of Karachi on Wednesday as members of the transgender community staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club, urging the government to provide immediate relief from the rising cost of living. Holding placards and chanting slogans, protesters called for a reduction in petroleum prices and stricter measures to curb inflation, saying the financial burden had become unbearable for vulnerable communities already struggling with limited economic opportunities. The demonstrators said increasing prices of fuel and essential household items had significantly affected their ability to meet daily expenses. They argued that every increase in petroleum prices triggered higher transportation costs and pushed the prices of food, medicines and other necessities even further beyond the reach of low-income families. Addressing the gathering, Gender Interactive Alliance spokesperson Zehrish Somroo said the transgender community was facing severe financial hardship as inflation continued to erode incomes and reduce public support. “We have come out to protest because the rising cost of living is affecting everyone, including the transgender community,” she said. “Many of us depend on charity and public donations for survival. If inflation continues unchecked, even those sources of support are shrinking.” Somroo urged the government to take practical steps to reduce inflation, adding that the community had long struggled with limited access to education, employment and equal opportunities. Transgender rights activist Bindiya Rana said the demonstration was not intended to create conflict but to draw attention to the growing economic difficulties affecting ordinary citizens across Pakistan. Protesters said many families were being forced to make painful sacrifices to survive, including selling motorcycles, household belongings and even children’s jewellery to cover basic expenses. They warned that the rising cost of food, electricity, transport and healthcare had left countless households uncertain about how they would meet their daily needs. Participants appealed to policymakers to introduce urgent relief measures, including lowering fuel prices and stabilising the prices of essential commodities. They stressed that immediate action was needed to protect low-income and marginalised communities from further economic hardship. The protesters also issued a warning that if their demands were ignored, members of the transgender community from across Sindh would travel to Karachi to stage a larger province-wide demonstration, intensifying pressure on the government to address the worsening cost-of-living crisis.

    PESHAWAR: The Directorate of Youth Affairs, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has launched the “Ikhtiyar Awam Ka” Complaint Cell across all districts of the province, providing citizens with a dedicated platform to register complaints, submit suggestions and seek information regarding youth-related services through their respective District Youth Offices. The initiative has been introduced to promote transparency, accountability and effective public engagement while ensuring timely redressal of complaints related to youth affairs and government services. Director Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Abbas Khan Afridi said the establishment of the complaint cell reflects the government’s commitment to responsive governance and citizen-centric service delivery. “The Directorate of Youth Affairs is committed to ensuring that every citizen has direct access to our services. The ‘Ikhtiyar Awam Ka’ Complaint Cell will strengthen communication between the public and the Directorate, enabling us to address complaints promptly and improve the quality of services through public feedback,” Mr Afridi said. He said citizens from every district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could contact their respective District Youth Offices through the designated helpline numbers to register complaints, report issues, share recommendations and obtain information about youth development programmes. Mr Afridi added that every complaint received through the complaint cell would be handled with transparency, responsibility and within a defined timeframe to ensure accountability and public confidence. The complaint cell has been established in all district youth offices across Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Buner, Shangla, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Malakand, Chitral Upper, Chitral Lower, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, North Waziristan, South Waziristan Upper, South Waziristan Lower, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Karak, Kohat, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Haripur, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Battagram, Torghar, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Kolai-Palas Kohistan, where citizens can connect through the officially designated helplines. Officials said the initiative would strengthen public trust, improve institutional accountability and ensure efficient delivery of youth-related services across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
