Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in Manila, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation under the Pakistan-European Union Strategic Engagement Plan.

According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on enhancing bilateral relations and expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest. The two leaders discussed ways to deepen political dialogue, economic cooperation, and strategic engagement while emphasizing the importance of maintaining close coordination on regional and global issues.

During the meeting, Ishaq Dar and Kaja Kallas also exchanged views on the evolving situation involving the United States and Iran. Both sides discussed recent regional developments and stressed the importance of preventing further escalation that could threaten peace and stability in the wider region. They agreed that continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement remain essential in addressing international challenges and resolving disputes through peaceful means.

The Foreign Office stated that both leaders recognized diplomacy as the only effective and sustainable path to ensuring lasting peace and stability. They emphasized that constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and international cooperation are critical to reducing tensions and promoting regional security. The discussion reflected a shared understanding of the need for peaceful conflict resolution in an increasingly complex global environment.

A key area of discussion was the Pakistan-European Union Strategic Engagement Plan, which serves as the framework for cooperation across a broad range of sectors, including trade, governance, climate action, human rights, education, and sustainable development. Both sides reaffirmed their determination to continue working together under this framework and to further strengthen institutional ties between Pakistan and the European Union.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of expanding economic cooperation. Pakistan reiterated its commitment to strengthening trade and investment relations with the European Union, which remains one of the country’s largest trading partners. Both sides acknowledged the value of continued economic engagement in supporting sustainable growth, job creation, and long-term prosperity.

According to the Foreign Office, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the effective implementation of all international conventions linked to the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) programme. The GSP+ status provides Pakistan with preferential access to European markets, benefiting several export sectors, particularly textiles and garments. Islamabad emphasized that it remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under the programme by implementing the relevant international conventions related to human rights, labour standards, environmental protection, and good governance.

The two sides also discussed the importance of maintaining regular dialogue to address shared challenges and explore new opportunities for cooperation. They expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of Pakistan-European Union relations and agreed to continue working closely to achieve common objectives.

The meeting in Manila reflects the ongoing efforts by both Pakistan and the European Union to further strengthen their partnership through constructive engagement, expanded economic cooperation, and coordinated diplomatic efforts. As global and regional challenges continue to evolve, both sides reaffirmed that sustained dialogue and collaboration remain essential for promoting peace, stability, and mutually beneficial relations.

The discussions concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing bilateral ties, reinforcing strategic cooperation, and building a stronger partnership that supports shared interests and contributes to regional and international stability.

    Lahore CTO cracks down on traffic corruption

    Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Abdul Rahim Shirazi has issued a strict warning to traffic wardens against corruption and misuse of authority. Shirazi said no traffic official would be allowed to demand money from citizens or become involved in illegal activities. He warned that anyone found guilty would face strict legal action. The CTO said some traffic officials had been involved in taking money from members of the public. He added that officials accused of such practices were being arrested. Shirazi issued a particularly strong warning against extortion. He said if any traffic official demanded extortion from a citizen, he would ensure that a terrorism case was registered against the official. The traffic chief said he was deeply concerned over cases in which traffic personnel had faced extortion charges. He described such incidents as a source of embarrassment for the traffic department. He stressed that traffic wardens were responsible for enforcing traffic laws and facilitating citizens. They must not misuse their positions for personal gain. The CTO directed traffic personnel to perform their duties honestly and professionally. He made it clear that corruption, harassment and illegal demands would not be tolerated. He also warned officials that strict action would be taken against anyone found exploiting their authority. The department would continue monitoring the conduct of traffic personnel, he said. The warning comes as Lahore traffic authorities seek to improve public confidence in traffic enforcement. Officials are also under pressure to ensure that citizens are treated fairly during routine traffic checks and enforcement operations. Shirazi said the traffic department must maintain discipline and transparency. He stressed that officials involved in wrongdoing would be held accountable under the law.

    The head of the Awam Pakistan Party, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, has criticized the government over the country’s worsening economic and political situation, saying that even government representatives have now started raising concerns about the state of affairs in Pakistan. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Abbasi said that the interior minister had realized after four to five years that the country was facing serious governance challenges, while ordinary Pakistanis had been expressing similar concerns for years. “The people of Pakistan have been saying the same thing for the past four to five years,” Abbasi stated, adding that government ministers should raise such issues directly during cabinet meetings instead of discussing them publicly. The former prime minister stressed that Pakistan urgently requires meaningful reforms and warned that temporary or superficial measures would not solve the country’s deep-rooted problems. He argued that the country has repeatedly experimented with short-term solutions every year, but what is needed is a fundamental change in the system. “We need to change the system and establish the rule of law,” Abbasi said, emphasizing that strong institutions and equal application of laws are necessary for long-term stability. Abbasi also criticized political divisions and the practice of using accountability cases against opponents. He called for an end to the cycle of imprisoning political rivals, questioning how the country could progress if every politician was accused of corruption. “If all politicians are corrupt, then who will run the country?” he asked. The Awam Pakistan Party leader claimed that two major stakeholders currently play a dominant role in running the country, but instead of working together, both sides continue to blame each other for national problems. Discussing the economic situation, Abbasi said that the income of Pakistani citizens has declined significantly over the past six years. He claimed that household purchasing power has fallen by approximately 14 percent, leaving many families struggling financially. “Every household in Pakistan has become poorer,” he said, adding that unemployment has reached its highest level in 21 years. Abbasi also highlighted the increasing tax burden on citizens, stating that the average Pakistani now pays around Rs60,000 in taxes annually. He said that taxes that were previously around Rs30,000 have doubled in recent years, while poverty continues to rise across the country. The former prime minister argued that Pakistan is struggling to attract investment because of inconsistent policies and uncertainty. He accused the government of relying heavily on taxation rather than creating conditions that encourage economic growth. “There is no certainty about when new taxes will be imposed,” Abbasi said, claiming that unpredictable policies discourage businesses and investors from operating in Pakistan. He also raised concerns about public health and food security, stating that thousands of children in Pakistan are affected by HIV and that the government has started importing wheat despite the country being an agricultural economy. “A country known for agriculture is now purchasing wheat from abroad,” he remarked. Abbasi further criticized rising costs of essential services, including electricity, gas, petrol, and diesel. He said that ordinary citizens are facing increasing financial pressure because of continuous price increases. According to Abbasi, Pakistan’s current situation reflects a broader governance failure, and without major reforms, improvements in economic conditions will remain difficult. He called for political cooperation, institutional reform, and policies focused on economic stability rather than short-term measures.

However, rescue officials later confirmed that more than 15 injured people had been transported to different hospitals for medical treatment, suggesting the number of casualties could rise as rescue efforts continued. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene immediately after the explosion, providing first aid to the injured and shifting them to nearby healthcare facilities. Security forces cordoned off the area, launched a search operation, and began collecting evidence to determine the nature of the attack and identify those behind it. Police officials also clarified that a protest by local youths was taking place in the wider area at the time of the incident, but the demonstration was located some distance from the blast site and was not directly affected.

    Fawad Blames PML-N, PPP for political deadlock

He questioned what new solutions the prime minister could still offer after overseeing so many budgets. Commenting on constitutional reforms, Fawad said he supports the transfer of administrative powers, adding that decentralization could strengthen governance if implemented effectively. Addressing the broader political situation, he stressed that any genuine national dialogue must include the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who remains in prison. Fawad said the PTI founder is the country’s most influential political leader and should be engaged in talks as a Pakistani citizen. He added that he shares a long political association with the PTI founder and believes meaningful negotiations cannot succeed without his participation. Former Sindh governor Imran Ismail, who was also present during the media interaction, said he has submitted a request to meet the PTI founder. According to Ismail, he intends to discuss proposals related to the creation of new provinces and seek his opinion on the issue before moving forward with any political discussions.
