The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has made a major leadership change ahead of the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup by removing Imad Shakil Butt as captain of the national hockey team and appointing Abu Bakr as the new skipper.

The decision was announced by PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani following the recommendation of the federation’s Professional Development Committee. According to the PHF, the change in captaincy is part of its strategy to strengthen the team before the prestigious international tournament and prepare it for future challenges.

Abu Bakr will officially begin his captaincy during Pakistan’s home series against South Korea, which starts on July 30. The federation believes the series will provide the newly appointed captain with an ideal opportunity to lead the team before the World Cup begins.

While Imad Shakil Butt has been relieved of his captaincy duties, the PHF confirmed that he will remain an important member of the national squad. As one of the team’s most experienced players, Imad is expected to continue contributing through his leadership on the field and by mentoring younger teammates.

In its official statement, the Pakistan Hockey Federation expressed confidence that the combination of Abu Bakr’s leadership, the experience of senior players, and the energy of emerging talent would help build a united and competitive team. The federation emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of Pakistan hockey and is aimed at improving the team’s overall performance in major international competitions.

The captaincy change comes at a crucial time, with the FIH Hockey World Cup scheduled to begin on August 15. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium and will feature 16 of the world’s top hockey nations competing for the coveted title.

The participating teams have been divided into four groups of four. Pakistan has been placed in Group D alongside England, Wales, and its traditional rival, India. Economic experts believe that a US-backed stabilization facility would provide a significant boost to Pakistan’s financial position. The incident had already drawn disciplinary attention from English football authorities. In November 2025, the Football Association charged Crystal Palace with failing to ensure that its supporters did not behave in an improper, offensive, abusive or provocative manner. The club was subsequently fined £50,000 ($67,000) over the incident. The dispute comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions between the two clubs.     The Islamabad Police has received 30 new vehicles for 27 police stations in the federal capital after a gap of 14 years, in a move aimed at improving police mobility and reducing emergency response times. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry handed over the vehicle keys to police officials during a ceremony at Police Lines on Saturday. Speaking at the ceremony, Naqvi said modern policing could not be achieved without providing police with functional and adequate transport. He said the newly provided vehicles would help officers respond to emergencies more quickly and perform their duties more effectively. The interior minister said the government was making efforts to provide Islamabad Police with the resources required to improve public safety and maintain security in the capital. He also said work was underway on the construction and upgrading of police stations across Islamabad. According to him, the projects would be completed soon and would improve the working environment and operational capacity of the force. Naqvi highlighted the inclusion of electric vehicles in the government’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly policies. He said the use of electric vehicles would also help reduce expenditure on petroleum products. Tallal Chaudhry said the new vehicles had been distributed among all 27 police stations in Islamabad. He pointed out that police personnel had previously been operating vehicles that were around 14 years old, creating difficulties for effective field operations. The minister of state said rehabilitation and construction work at the capital’s 27 police stations was also in progress and was expected to be completed by the end of the year. He further disclosed that around 9,000 new personnel were being recruited to address the shortage of manpower in Islamabad Police. He said the recruitment process would be conducted strictly on merit.

Independent candidate Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq has secured 5,064 votes. In LA-8 Kotli-1, PPP’s Zafar Iqbal Malik is narrowly leading with 1,221 votes based on results from 10 of 155 polling stations. PML-N’s Malik Muhammad Nawaz Khan has 1,174 votes. In LA-9 Kotli-2, PML-N candidate Umair Naeem has established a lead with 23,568 votes from 119 of 178 polling stations.     DR Congo releases 15 prisoners to M23 rebel group

    Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have released 15 prisoners and handed them over to the AFC/M23 rebel movement. The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the transfer, marking the first known exchange under last year’s peace agreement signed in Qatar. The detainees departed from the government-held city of Beni in a convoy and travelled through Uganda before being delivered to rebels in Rutshuru territory. All 15 individuals explicitly agreed to the transfer after months of bilateral negotiations regarding the finalised list of detainees. The diplomatic step aims to bring relief to separated families while addressing ongoing conflict in eastern Congo.
